Mary Taedzerwa is a Zimbabwean activist and businesswoman. She won a Africa Reimagined award at the 2016 edition of the MTV Africa Music Awards.

Background

She was kicked out by her father after she came home late one night. Mary moved in with her then-boyfriend at the age of 15. Having lived in extreme poverty with her family, the thought of swapping a life of hardship for that of a wife proved enough to convince her to give up school in order to marry. Speaking to an online publication on the experience she said

At first, the marriage was nice and easy. My husband loved me then. After a year, things changed. Suddenly there were times he [my husband] would become physically violent.

The physical abuse reportedly continued even when she was pregnant and after four years of marriage and three children later, at 19 years old she left her husband. Plan International Zimbabwe, through the Because I Am A Girl and 18+ Ending Child Marriage project started empowering her until she became a child marriage advocate in her community and beyond.

Apart from being an activist, Mary is the owner of a business where she buys and sells clothes and other items.[1]
