<vote /> Patson Dzamara who is in the United State of America, has handed over a petition to the World Bank requesting that it denies Zimbabwe lines of credit. In his petition Dzamara states that any credit facility that any credit facility that the World Bank would extent towards the Zanu-PF government would not benefit the citizens of the country.

Part of the petition reads,

For an international institution such as the World Bank to now even consider extending financial help to such a government is more than disappointing, it is a betrayal. Let me be clear. Any such financial aid would NOT be extended to Zimbabweans, and would NOT benefit people on the ground. Quite the contrary, it would extend the life-span of a crumbling regime that is harmful to the future of the people and nation of Zimbabwe. It is actually likely that such financial support would directly fund the very mechanisms, physical and otherwise, that cause such harm to a long-suffering population. It is therefore, with confidence in the justness of our cause, and trust that your institution would not commit such an irresponsible mistake, that I ask on behalf of my organization, our friends and partners, and Zimbabwe as a whole, that you would not extend or be in any way complicit in extending a financial lifeline to an administration culpable of such crimes against its own citizens.

Recently the World Bank issued a statement with regards to lending to Zimbabwe and mentioned that,

Contrary to what has been reported in some media, Zimbabwe is not currently eligible for financing under IDA’s turnaround facility. The Zimbabwe Turnaround Eligibility Assessment Note that was leaked to some outlets is an unofficial draft document that has not been approved by the Bank. The World Bank will only resume direct lending to Zimbabwe when the issue of arrears is resolved. This approach is standard to all International Financial Institutions. Upon arrears clearance, Zimbabwe would be eligible as a borrowing member of the Bank to a broad range of financing instruments.
