News:Police deny reports that they used live ammunition to disperse protesters. Urges public to come forward with evidence

<vote /> Police yesterday dismissed reports that they used live ammunition to quell protests at the weekend organised by opposition parties who defied a standing ban.

In a statement yesterday, police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi said,

For the record, no firearm or ‘live bullets’ were used in the perceived protests throughout the country. As police we reiterate that anyone who claims that live bullets were fired at protesters should come forward with the evidence.

Douglas Mwonzora who is the spokesman for the opposition coalition, told VOA that

in Kuwadzana, Dzivaresekwa, Mufakose, Epworth and Kambuzuma, live ammunition was fired from a truck which was being used by police and militia. We have more than 20 people receiving treatment. Over a 100 people have been arrested throughout the country. Some of these people include [opposition] members of Parliament.
