Sakunda is well on its way to become Zimbabwe's largest independent power producer in two months. By end of July, the company will feed some 200 megawatts of power into the national grid. The announcement was made during a “monitoring tour” of the Dema emergency power plant project by Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Misheck Sibanda this week.

Initially, the plant will feed 100MW of power in June and then later another 100MW in July.

It was first announced in January this year that Sakunda had been awarded the tender to supply the 200MW emergency diesel power plant built at Dema substation in Seke communal land.

The additional 200MW is expected to further alleviate the need to load shed consumption of power in Zimbabwe as well as possibly reduce the importation of power into the country from South Africa. Recently it was announced that Zimbabwe's total power demand is now around 1,400MW. Zimbabwe itself generates about 1,050MW leaving a deficit of about 350MW. The country has been making up for that deficit by importing power from SA.
