  • 5 February 2004: The Supreme Court rules that it a crime for journalists to operate without a government permit, effectively forcing the closure of the Daily News. The Daily News had been refused a license in December 2003. The paper remained closed for 7 years, only coming back in March 2011.
  • 5 February 2008: Emmerson Mnangagwa, then Zanu-PF secretary for legal affairs, announces that Simba Makoni's had effectively "expelled himself" from the party by deciding to run against President Robert Mugabe in the presidential elections slated for March 2008.
