Ndabaningi Sithole is one of the country's unsung heroes of the liberation struggle. Sithole is among Zimbabe's founding nationalists when he joined the African National Congress before joining the Joshua Nkomo led National Democratic Party as the treasurer.

In 1964 Sithole was elected first president of ZANU but lost the party presidency due to incarceration only to be released in 1975. It is also believed that Sithole was deposed because he preferred halting the struggle and opted for negotiations. He went on to form his own party which had a military wing known as Madzakutsaku.

March 1978, Sithole alongside other nationalists such as Jeremiah Chirau signed an internal settlement with the Rhodesian government giving birth to Zimbabwe-Rhodesia. He was also one of the delegates at the Lancaster House Agreement in 1979. Regardless of the role played by Sithole in the liberation struggle, he was unfortunately not awarded heroes status.
