Chief Rekayi Tangwena is one of the most prolific figures in the country's liberation history. He led his people in one of the most spirited acts of resistance against the Ian Smith regime. On more than one occasion, the Tangwena people refused to be evicted from their ancestral land which had been occupied by the settlers.
The matter spilled into the courts and Tangwena emerged victorious and it only took a dubious piece of legislation to violently evict the Tangwena people. After several acts of defiance and resistance, Tangwena eventually crossed into Mozambique to join the armed struggle. One of the most significant episodes of Tangwena's illustrious career was when he helped Robert Mugabe and Edgar Tekere to cross into Mozambique to join the war.
