Soko Matemai (formerly known as Sharky) is a Zimbabwean hip hop artist. He merges traditional instruments like mbira and hosho with modern live instruments like the guitar and keyboard. Soko Matemai launched his debut album "Soko Matemai" in 2016 under the moniker "Sharky" to critical acclaim with the album being number one in Zimbabwe Albums on iTunes, a few days after its release.

Background

Soko Matemai was born Marshall Zivashe Muchenje on 8 June 1993 in Chitungwiza.[1]\[2]

Education

Marshall attended Goromonzi High School and Zengeza High School.[1]

Career

He mentions that he got into music at an early age and became a DJ at the age of 16 where he used to play music at school gigs and events in his neighbourhood. Soko was inspired by a friend of his who was a huge Eminem fan, who was always writing raps, and eventually he started writing as well. He mentions that he was part of Facebook rap forums where people would post lyrics and this resulted in a friend of his asking him to get on to one of his tracks. Although he was skeptical at first because he had never recorded before, he managed to finish the song after a few takes and it came out pretty well. Since that day he started going back to him to make his own songs which resulted in the projects Tales Of a Shark 1 & 2.[2]

Soko Matemai has performed alongside Tehn Diamond, Noble Stylz, Killer T, Ba Shupi and Dhadza D.[3] He has also performed at the Peace In The Hood event hosted by the Magaba Network in Chitungwiza in 2015.[2]

His first international performance was at the Festa2H festival in Senegal in 2016. In 2016, under the moniker "Sharky", he launched his debut album Soko Matemai to critical acclaim with the album being number one in Zimbabwe Albums on iTunes, a few days after its release.[3]
