Sylvester Maruza

Sylvester Maruza was one of the two first Africans to become advocates of the High Court in Rhodesia. Maruza and George Chinengundu were the first African graduates from the University of Rhodesia to be admitted to the bar of the Rhodesian High Court.

Background

Maruza was a member of the Roman Catholic Church. He was born in Highfields in 1947 and was the second born in a family of eight children.

Education

He attended primary and secondary school at boarding school. He passed his Bachelor of Law Degree in 1969. He wanted to be a solicitor but enrolled for a postgraduate diploma in law after a vacancy to study as a solicitor was not forthcoming.


Career

He was a voluntary worker at the Highfield Credit Union Corporation.
