Legend

name, name_local - name of the town/city, English and local
country - clearly the country, where the place is
image_coat_of_arms - coat of arms image, it is resized by the template to 128px horizontally
region section
- region_type - English name for the region (Region, Province, District, if the local one is not translatable, it should be left as Region), should be capitalized
- region_type - local name for the region type, it is displayed as wikilink
- region_name - English name for the region, without the region type word if it is a apart of it
- region_link - name of the Wikipedia article on the region to which the town belongs
- region name_local - local name for the region, without the local region type word
population information
- population - number of inhabitants
- population_as_of - the year when previous information was gathered
- area - town/city area in km²
- founded - year when the town/city was founded
- founded_type - to be used only when "Founded" (default) data is not available, though e.g. "First documented" is known
- elevation - town/city eleveation in m above mean sea level
coordinates - uses coor template, thus creates a link to maps, should be coordinates of the center (main square etc.)
- lat_deg - latitude degrees
- lat_min - latitude minutes
- lat_hem - latitude hemispehere (either N or S)
- lon_deg - longitude degrees
- lon_min - longitude minutes
- lon_hem - longitude hemispehere (either W or S)
website - website with preferably touristic information (with maps) about the place in English, two formats possible

"http://domain.com/path_to_document" - this is sometimes unnecessary long and breaks formatting
"[http"//domain.com/path_to_document text_to_display]" where text_to_display might be just domain.com (if there's an equal sign, "=", in the webaddress, it should be replaced by %3D, NB the space between path_to_document and text_to_display)

image_location - image with location of the place within the country, it is resized to 256px width, so the map shoud preferably be this size

Mayor

It's been discussed many times before, but the name of the current mayor has really no place in this infobox,. Infoboxes generally should only give a basic data on the topic to give the reader quick overview, but name of current mayor has no relevance for an international reader. — Caroig 20:06, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

Flags

Could we display the town's flag next to its coat of arms (like in the Brno article)?

I don't think there should be a field for a banner/flag. First, while every town everywhere in Europe has a coat-of-arms, which can thus be considered the logo/symbol of the town, banners are rather used in large towns only. And second, I guess the Infobox in the Brno article is very bad, because chaotic. The infoboxes should be used to give the reader a general overview of the town, before they start reding the article itself, and not list a load of statistical, administrative and other data. One pattern should be used for all articles within one category, good example are the Taxoboxes used for species, it always gives the rteader a quick information on the placement of the life form, allways in the same way. — Caroig 11:28, 1 March 2006 (UTC)

Conditional syntax

I've made the infobox more flexible with regard to local names: if a local name is empty it will not be printed (useful if name is equal to local_name). I've also added a new named parameter "first_documented", if a founding date is unknown and the city simply starts to appear in some records. It is ignored if "founded" is nonempty. Turned down

I reverted the template to my previous version, it would be nice to have all the table formating done in CSS, pure CSS ... but version suggested by User:Ed_g2s doesn't follow this either, and although it simplifies the markup, the resulting layout is not nice and doesn't correspond with other Wikipedia's infoboxes. The use of cellpading and cellspacing for table layouts is generally discouraged if favor of CSS.

How about adding more info to the box? I mean something towards the direction of Template:Infobox Poland, for instance (in content, not in looks) Halibu tt 05:34, 23 September 2005 (UTC)

I don't think this is a good idea. The Infobox should provide just basic information about the topic. And then the article should extend it. A lot of contributors tend to fill the infobox with a lot of "crap" (data which is rather a curiosity of little information value, such as number plate prefix in Template:Infobox Poland], yet they fail to work more on the article itself. --Caroig 22:55, 23 September 2005 (UTC)

Coordinate precision

Hi, I once created this infobox but no longer use it myself as Template:Infobox City has evolved since then and I believe it is much better now. I'm a bit surprised this infobox is still used. Anyway, it is still on my watchlist and I saw this request. So lat_dec, lon_dec can optionaly be used too. I also corrected the bug in alternating colors which someone introduced with the mayor field which, as had been agreed then, was not part of this template. If there is a problem with my fix, feel free to post it here or on my userpage. – Caroig 14:55, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the fix. I also added a bracket and a "|" character that was missing in the code. As for the use of Template:Infobox City, I'm not against it, but the article that I am using this template on is about a town, not a city. Perhaps this infobox can be upgraded to the level of Infobox City, a task that should be fairly easy considering the relatively low number of transclusions for this template. --TMF ^{Let's Go Mets - Stats} 21:19, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

Welcome. Despite its name, the Infobox City can be used and is used for villages/towns/cities. It's just a box about a municipality. There's nothing in particluar that would connect it just with cities, safe the name. – Caroig 22:09, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi... Perhaps a deprecated notice should be added then, as I lost some time fiddling with this before I realized that it was best for European towns and I should be using {{Infobox City}} instead. Looks like around 115 towns are still using it. --GregU 02:56, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
