William Ernest Tsomondo was a legal professional and a magistrate. He is known mostly for being the first black magistrate in Rhodesia in 1977. Before becoming judge, Tsomondo had spent 14 years as a court interpreter.
Career
In 1962, Tsomondo joined the Department of Justice and served in a number of places such as Shabani, Bulawayo, Gwanda and Salisbury. He began studying for his Bachelor of Law degree, with the University of Rhodesia while stationed at Rusape where he was acting as the clerk of court in addition to court interpretation.[1]
In 1975 he was transferred back to Salisbury as a senoir interpreter and became a magisterial assistant after he had competed his degree course. His next appointment was in April 1977 when he was seconded to the Ministry of Law and Order as a public prosecutor, becoming the third African to hold such a post.[1]
In 1977 he was appointed the first black magistrate in Rhodesia.[1]
