The SADC Electoral Observer Mission (SEOM) to Eswatini said the general elections held in the kingdom on Friday last week were “well organised”.
Africa’s last absolute monarch held general elections to elect parliamentarians, heads of constituencies and councillors.
King Mswati III rules the impoverished country of about 1.2 million people with an iron fist and political parties are banned but individual candidates are allowed to run for seats in the House of Assembly every five years.
Former Zambia vice president Enock Kavindele headed the mission to Eswatini.
In its preliminary report presented Sunday, SEOM said the elections were held in line with the Revised SADC Guidelines and Principles Governing Democratic Elections. It said:

In conclusion, the Mission observed that the pre-election and voting phases, on the 29th September 2023 General Elections were peaceful, calm and well organised in line with the Revised SADC Guidelines and Principles Governing Democratic Elections.
Finally, the Mission commends the people of the Kingdom of Eswatini for maintaining a peaceful political environment during the pre-election and on voting day.
</blockquote>
The SEOM said 93 percent of the polling stations opened on time and voting progressed smoothly.
The SEOM, however, noted that there were issues relating to the electronic voters’ roll, which delayed the voting process at some polling stations.
It also noted that the positioning of the ballot booths was such that it did not strictly guarantee the secrecy of the vote at some polling stations.

SADC Election Observers Endorse Eswatini General Elections

Namibian opposition leader Bernadus Swartbooi said that President Emmerson Mnangagwa is a “puppet of the Zimbabwean military” as he came to power on the back of the November 2017 military coup.
Addressing a media conference in his country, Swartbooi, who is the leader of the Landless People’s Movement, slammed SADC and the AU for failing to condemn the 2017 military coup in Zimbabwe that ousted Robert Mugabe.
Swartbooi also criticised SADC leaders who congratulated Mnangagwa on his re-election last month despite the SADC Election Observer Mission (SEOM) and other election observers raising questions on the credibility of the polls. He said:

There was a clear military coup in Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe was not suspended from SADC or from the AU for a coup that was committed; they went scot-free and the military put its puppet, ED Mnangagwa as president.
But it was a clear coup… no suspension from SADC, no condemnation, no suspension from AU, nothing.
Again Zimbabwe got what it wanted, and got away with what it was doing.

Swartbooi also cited several cases in which SADC allegedly bent its own rules in order to accommodate ZANU PF’s excesses.
He used the case of a white Zimbabwean commercial farmer who had successfully appealed a Zimbabwean Supreme Court ruling that sought to legalise the compulsory acquisition of white-owned farms without compensation, to prove his point.
The now-defunct SADC Tribunal, which was based in Windhoek, Namibia, ruled in favour of the Zimbabwean farmer and the Zimbabwean government pushed SADC to disband the Tribunal. Said Swartbooi:

The question we are asking is what is so special about ZANU PF that it can break every law in Zimbabwe, it can break every sense of what we understood to be a semblance of democracy and not even a word of concern about violence preceding, during and post-election and not even a word of concern is expressed by our leaders.
</blockquote>
He suggested that SADC has taken its loyalty to ZANU PF too far at the expense of the democratisation of member-states. Said Swartbooi:

SADC now literally goes into self-masturbation; how do you send your own trusted institution and this time you discredit yourselves, you mutilate yourselves for the sake of ZANU PF?
What do we as SADC owe ZANU PF … what have they done uniquely for South Africa, Mozambique, Namibia, Angola, Botswana, Zambia, and Tanzania, to deserve this type of utmost loyalty even at our own expense? Where do we now go and do we mutilate SADC’s mission?
</blockquote>
Other opposition parties in the region, notably BOSA and EFF in South Africa have also condemned ZANU PF for allegedly suppressing dissenting voices at home.

Namibian Opposition Politician Says Mnangagwa Is A Puppet Of Zimbabwe's Military

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema, who is the Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation, was on Wednesday, 27 September, set to convene and chair a Virtual Extraordinary Organ Troika Summit (EO-OTS) in Lusaka, Zambia.
Zimbabwe’s disputed 23 August Harmonised Elections were on the Summit’s agenda, as well as the security situation in eastern DRC.
According to a press statement released by Zambia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Tanzanian President and Incoming Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, Samia Suluhu Hassan, Namibian President and Outgoing Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, Hage Gottfried Geingob, and the DRC President and Outgoing Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, Félix Antoine Tshisekedi, were expected to attend the Summit. … the SADC Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM) report on the harmonised elections in the Republic of Zimbabwe as well as other impending elections in the SADC region will also be discussed at the Summit.
The values and principles that underpin the promotion of democracy and good governance are also the foundation of Zambia’s foreign policy.
The Summit will be preceded by a Virtual Extraordinary Council of Ministers Meeting, which is scheduled to take place on 27th September, 2023.

Zambia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the summit will discuss the security situation in eastern DRC, get updates on pledged critical capabilities for the SADC Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (SAMIDRC) and progress made towards deployment in the eastern DRC. It said:

The deployment of a Brigade-size Force in support of the DRC for an initial period of 12 months, beginning on September 30, 2023, was approved at the Extraordinary Organ Troika Summit Plus SADC Troika and Force Intervention Brigade Troop Contributing Countries (FIB TCCs) and the DRC on May 11, 2023, in Windhoek, Namibia.

Hichilema Convenes Extraordinary Troika Summit, SADC Report On Zimbabwe Elections To Be Discussed

Former Zambian President Edgar Lungu has been banned by the police from jogging in public, as they consider it “political activism,” <a href="https://www.lusakatimes.com/2023/09/24/police-warn-against-political-activism-during-former-president-lungus-jogging/">Lusaka Times</a> reported.
Lungu’s weekly runs with members of the public and his party supporters have gained significant attention. The police have ordered him to seek approval for future jogging events, stating that failure to do so breaches the law and jeopardizes public safety. In a recent statement, Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said:

The Zambia Police Service has noted with concern the unlawful assembly and political activism that was conducted by Patriotic Front cadres on Saturday, September 23, 2023, when the Former President Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu was conducting his morning jogging routine.
We would like to warn the Patriotic Front cadres that public gatherings or demonstrations, including political events, should be notified to the police as by law established. Failure to do so amounts to a breach of the law. This is to ensure public safety, traffic management, and to prevent disruptions to the daily lives of citizens.
</blockquote>
However, Lungu’s lawyer Makebu Zulu has asserted that he will continue jogging without notifying the police and may take legal action if obstructed. He told <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-66909506#:~:text=Zambia's%20former%20President%20Edgar%20Lungu,attracting%20a%20lot%20of%20attention.">BBC News</a>:

This restriction on Lungu’s activities follows previous restrictive directives, including being blocked from travelling to South Korea for a conference. Despite announcing his retirement from politics after losing the 2021 election, Lungu has recently been reemerging in the public eye, leading to speculation that he plans to contest the presidency in 2026. Lungu allegedly aims to capitalise on public discontent over rising fuel and food prices in the upcoming elections.
President Hakainde Hichilema’s government has faced criticism for its perceived heavy-handed tactics, contrasting with his criticism of such actions during his time in opposition.

Zambian Police Ban Former President Lungu From Jogging

A South African opposition politician Mmusi Maimane has criticised the country’s leader, President Cyril Ramaphosa’s call for the unconditional lifting of sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe by Western powers.
Addressing the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) recently, Ramaphosa said the sanctions should be lifted as they are also affecting South Africa. He said:

The sanctions that are also being applied against South Africa’s neighbour, Zimbabwe, should also be lifted as they are imposing untold suffering on ordinary Zimbabweans, but also have a collateral negative impact on neighbouring countries as well such as my own country, South Africa.

Responding to Ramaphosa’s remarks, Maimane accused the South African leader of siding with the oppressor. He said:

You are on the wrong side of history and are hurting both South Africans and Zimbabweans by supporting this dictator. You have chosen to stand with the oppressor.
South Africa pays the price for the dictatorship in Zimbabwe. We pay in healthcare, in housing and social services.
</blockquote>
Hundreds of thousands, probably millions of Zimbabweans, have migrated to South Africa over the past two decades in search of greener pastures after Zimbabwe’s economic collapse.
The Zimbabweans who migrated to South Africa are accused of overburdening the country’s social services.
Some of the illegal migrants have resorted to occupying abandoned buildings and engaging in street hawking.

Maimane Accuses Ramaphosa Of Siding With Oppressors After Calling For Lifting Of Sanctions On Zimbabwe

A Zimbabwean student, Mike Lungu, who had been detained in Zambia for overstaying his visa, has been released after Good Samaritans raised the US$500 fine.
He was detained by immigration officials for overstaying in the neighbouring country.
Lungu completed his A Levels in nine months, instead of the regular two years, and was studying law at the University of Zimbabwe.
He appealed for financial help before being released with the support of Good Samaritans.
Lungu’s aunt, Samantha Simasiku, who is based in Zambia, was quoted by <a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/genius-student-released-in-zambia/">H-Metro</a> as saying that the young man was released with the support of well-wishers. She said:

l have been pushing for Mike to be released prayerfully. Many thanks to all the well-wishers and helpers who carried the burden off my shoulders and came through for the young man, God bless you.
</blockquote>
Lungu entered Zambia on March 29 and got a 30-day non-extendable business visitor.
His visa expired on April 28 but he stayed up to September 5.
Lungu was arrested at the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport as he sought to leave the country and travel back to Zimbabwe.
He had just completed short courses in Zambia.
He was ordered to pay a fine of US$500 or risk being jailed before being deported.
A recent report claimed that an estimated 10 000 young Zimbabweans are reportedly enrolled at Zambian colleges and universities.
Parents and students who spoke to <a href="https://masvingomirror.com/10-000-zimbabwe-students-flock-to-zambia/">The Mirror</a> claimed that Zambian universities are generally cheaper and fees are paid in the local currency which is stable, unlike the Zimbabwe dollar.
In Zambia, fees start from as little as $300 per semester and the quality of education on offer is reported to be higher than what is offered in Zimbabwe.

"Genius" Zimbabwean Student Arrested For Overstaying In Zambia Freed

Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame has confirmed that he will run for a fourth term in 2024.
The 65-year-old former rebel leader has been considered the country’s de facto leader since the end of the 1994 genocide.
Kagame was returned to power – with over 90% of the vote – in the 2003, 2010 and 2017 elections.
Speaking to <a href="https://www.jeuneafrique.com/1483925/politique/paul-kagame-le-probleme-nest-pas-entre-moi-et-tshisekedi-mais-entre-tshisekedi-et-le-m23/">the French-language magazine Jeune Afrique</a>, Kagame said he was ready to serve Rwandans for as long as he can. He said:

I am happy with the confidence Rwandans have shown in me. I will always serve them as long as I can. Yes, I am indeed a candidate.
</blockquote>
Human rights groups accuse Kagame of ruling in a climate of fear, stifling dissent and freedom of expression.
In 2022, HRW’s Central Africa director, Lewis Mudge, <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-62105226">told the BBC</a> that “Rwanda is a country where it’s very dangerous to oppose the government, let alone to be a political opponent”.
The Rwandan government has denied involvement in the killings of prominent opposition figures while in exile.
In 2014, Kagame warned that those who betray the country will face “consequences”.
Jeune Afrique asked Kagame what the West would think about his decision to run again and his response was:

Personally, I no longer know what corresponds to Western values. What is democracy? Is the West dictating to others what they should do? But if they violate their own principles, how do we listen to them?
Seeking to transplant democracy to someone else is already a violation of democracy in itself. People are supposed to be independent and should be allowed to organise themselves as they wish.
</blockquote>
Despite leading his then-rebel group, the Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF), which came to power in 1994, Kagame only became president in 2000 following the resignation of Pasteur Bizimungu.
In 2003, Rwanda adopted a new constitution giving the president a seven-year tenure renewable once.
But this was amended in a referendum in 2015 where 98% of the vote approved the changes.
The changes allowed the president to run for a third seven-year term and then serve two further five-year terms starting in 2024.

Nigerian musician Burna Boy has postponed his show at FNB Stadium in South Africa just four days before it was set to take place.
Stadium Management South Africa informed the owners of suites that Ternary Media Group, the event organiser, on Tuesday informed them of their decision to postpone the event. It said:

On the morning of 19 September 2023, Stadium Management South Africa and SAIL were informed by the event promotor, the Ternary Media Group, that the highly anticipated Burna Boy live music event, originally scheduled to take place at FNB Stadium on the 23rd of September 2023, has been postponed.

Burna Boy’s team, Spaceship Management, also released a statement saying the show has been postponed because of the promoters’ failure to fulfill their obligations. Read the statement:

The Phase 2 tickets which range in price from R950 to R2,660, were still available. The more expensive Platinum Package was also still available.

Burna Boy Postpones South Africa Concert

Some Zambians held a press conference on Sunday, September 17, 2023, to address alleged death threats directed at President Hakainde Hichilema by Patrick Chinamasa. They also demanded a formal investigation into the suspicious death of former Zambian President Mwanawasa in 2008. Chinamasa, a senior official in Zimbabwe’s ZANU PF party, recently made statements that were perceived as a confession of Zimbabwe’s involvement in Mwanawasa’s death and a threat to Hichilema. The strained relations between the two countries worsened when Hichilema appointed Dr. Nevers Mumba to lead the SADC Electoral Observer Mission to Zimbabwe, and Mumba criticized the election process, leading to accusations from ZANU PF that Hichilema was pushing for regime change with the support of Western countries. Addressing the media, Jack Kalala who was representing the Zambian nationals said:

Social media comments of Senior ZANU-PF official, Mr. Patrick Chinamasa, (copy attached) in the wake of the SADC Election Observer Mission Report that highlighted noted shortcomings in the conduct of the 2023 national elections in Zimbabwe have been received with utter dismay, shock and alarm by many of our compatriots and indeed by us. Without being prompted by anyone, Mr. Chinamasa volunteered to tell the entire world that his country, Zimbabwe, caused the untimely death of President Mwanawasa in 2008. President Mwanawasa died on August 19 in 2008 in France after suddenly falling sick under unclear and suspicious circumstances while attending the AU Summit in Shann El Sheik Tourist Resort City in Egypt.
As if that was not enough, Mr. Chinamasa severely warned President Hakainde Hichilema that he too could die in the same way.
Our understanding of Mr. Chinamasa’s assertions is that Zimbabwe had a hand in the death of President Mwanawasa and therefore has become a national security threat to Zambia and its President.
Mr. Chinamasa is no ordinary citizen in Zimbabwe because he is a senior official in the governing party, ZANU-PF, in the country. We therefore take it that he was speaking from an informed position. We consider Chinamasa’s allegation that President Mwanawasa had agreed to host a detachment of the British Military in the plot to topple the Government of President Robert Mugabe patently false and absolutely malicious.
There is evidence from reputable sections of the British and South African press (copies attached) that it was in fact South Africa under President Thabo Mbeki which had been requested to offer such support. We therefore wonder why Mr. Chinamasa has not pointed his accusing finger at South Africa but has chosen to direct his anger against Zambia. As for the warning to President Hichilema, we consider it misguided, appalling and provocative because the SADC Secretariat is the appropriate organ to receive complaints or blame on the Election Observers Mission Report since Zambia was not responsible for the report but SADC.
The threat on the life of President Hichilema is a national security issue and should therefore not be taken lightly as we fear for his life, in view of the deliberate reference made to President Mwanawasa’s death as an example. We feel that it wouldn’t be safe and advisable for him to be attending regional summit meetings, especially those that Zimbabwe will host.
In the interest of regional peace, stability and harmonious coexistence, it is our considered view that the highest organ of SADC should take up and deal with Mr. Chinamasa’s unjustified and unwarranted provocations. Lest we forget, it should be noted that Zambia sacrificed so much for the liberation of Zimbabwe and other countries in the region. Many lives and properties were lost and destroyed in helping our brothers and sisters to gain their freedom and independence. Many freedom fighters were hosted in Zambia and they used Zambia to fight for their freedom and independence which they are now enjoying. It is therefore dismaying and outrageous that the brothers and sisters for whom we sacrificed so much should repay us with ingratitude and animosity on baseless and fabricated allegations. As patriotic Zambians we are ready to defend through peaceful means the integrity, values and the good reputation of our country, Zambia. We are ready to safeguard the peace and stability that have prevailed since independence. We need these for the development of our country and indeed the region and Africa.
Consequently, should SADC fail to effectively deal with this matter, we will have no choice but to escalate it to the African Court of Justice. In addition, we are going to formally write to our Government to request them to take up the matter with the SADC Secretariat and AU since President Mwanawasa suddenly fell sick while attending the AU Summit in Sharm El Sheik City in Egypt.
In view of the unsolicited confession that Mr. Chinamasa made, it is our prayer that the Zambian Government should demand for an inquiry to be made in the death of President Mwanawasa to establish the truth. This is in the interest of all the African heads of State as we wouldn’t like a situation where African Presidents should be living in fear of each other but should work together to collectively resolve the many challenges our continent is facing. May God bless our beautiful country Zambia. May God bless and protect our leaders and give them wisdom to lead us to prosperity. May God bless Africa!

Zambians Address Alleged Death Threats To President Hakainde Hichilema By Patrick Chinamasa

Former Zambian President Edgar Lungu has taken legal action in the High Court of Lusaka, challenging the authorities’ decision to deny him permission to travel to South Korea for a world peace conference. Lungu was prevented from boarding a plane on Saturday and informed that he lacked the necessary clearance from the Cabinet. He and his wife, Esther Lungu, were scheduled to travel to South Korea via Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, but were unexpectedly informed of the cancellation of their trip by a protocol officer.
A spokesperson for the Zambian opposition Patriotic Front (PF), Emmanuel Mwamba, described the incident, stating that Lungu was removed from the plane despite receiving clearance and a boarding pass. Mwamba was quoted saying:

They were cleared properly, and bags were checked in. Boarding passes were issued, but afterwards, there was an uncomfortable delay.
Shortly, a protocol officer approached President Lungu and told him the trip had been cancelled.

Lungu is pursuing an order which invalidates the decision made by the Director General of Zambia’s Department of Immigration, which denied him permission to leave the country for South Korea. Additionally, he seeks an order to suspend the Director General’s decision and a refund for the expenses incurred for the air tickets. The High Court, presided by Judge Charles Zulu, will hear Lungu’s application on Monday 18 September 2023 in Lusaka.
Lungu served as Zambia’s sixth president until August 2021 when he was defeated by incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema in the country’s election.

Former Zambian President Lungu Seeks High Court Intervention After Being Denied Travel Permission

The Zambian government has prevented former President Edgar Lungu from traveling to South Africa for a medical review.
According to a letter dated 07 September 2023, the Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet, Oliver Kalabo informed Lungu that he had not been granted permission to travel to SA. Reads the letter in part:

Reference is made to a letter dated 16 August 2023 on the above subject.
I wish to advise that authority has not been granted for you, Your Excellency, to travel to South Africa for medical review.

Zambia’s President, Hakainde Hichilema, who chairs the SADC Troika, snubbed President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s inauguration on 04 September.
The ZANU PF-led government then hastily invited Lungu to attend the ceremony, a move that some commentators said was done to “spite” Hichilema.
On 4 September, Hichilema castigated alleged coup plotters who he claimed were planning to undermine Zambia’s democracy and stability. He said:

Commenting on the decision by the Zambian government to block Lungu from travelling to South Africa, Zambian political activist, Joseph Kalimbwe said:

Zambian Govt Blocks Former President Lungu From Travelling To South Africa

At least 5,200, have died in the coastal city of Derna in Libya after the city, home to about 100,000 people, was hit by floods caused by Storm Daniel hich made landfall in Libya on Sunday after earlier lashing Greece, Bulgaria and Turkey. Emergency services reported over 5,000 people missing and approximately 7,000 injured.
Buildings collapsed, cars disappeared, and major bridges were swept away. The city’s infrastructure was ill-equipped to withstand such a storm, as the dams had not been maintained for over two decades.
On Wednesday, al-Omran International Maritime Agencies confirmed that four major oil ports in Libya, namely Brega, Es Sidra, Ras Lanuf, and Zueitina, have reopened after being closed due to the storm. This development led to a rise in oil prices, as the market considered the impact of the port shutdowns and OPEC+ production cuts on the global economic outlook and oil supply concerns.
According to Derna’s deputy mayor, Ahmed Madroud, the city’s infrastructure was not designed to withstand the recent floods. The dams upstream from Derna had not been maintained for over 20 years, and they were not adequately sized. The failure of the first dam, which was 70 meters tall, led to water accumulation behind the second dam, ultimately resulting in its bursting.
Islamic Relief said it will provide aid to flood victims, allocating an initial 100,000 pounds for supplies like food, blankets, and mattresses. Said the NGO in a statement:

France will send a field hospital, and Algeria has dispatched aircraft with essential supplies. Egypt, France, Iran, Italy, Qatar, Tunisia, the United Nations, and the United States are all prepared to assist. The UN reports that over 46,000 people were already internally displaced in eastern Libya before the storm hit. Rula Amin, the spokeswoman for the UNHCR told Al Jazeera:

The roads have been damaged, telecommunications in Derna is down, hospitals are in difficulties, also our local partners have been affected – it’s a disaster situation.

More than 2,800 lives have been lost in Morocco’s deadliest earthquake in over six decades, and the death toll may continue to rise as rescuers race against time to find survivors. Search teams from Spain, Britain, and Qatar have joined Moroccan efforts in the High Atlas Mountains.
The earthquake, measuring 6.8 magnitude struck late on Friday in the High Atlas Mountains, with the epicentre located 72 kilometres (45 miles) southwest of Marrakesh and caused severe damage, particularly to the region’s traditional mud-brick houses, making it difficult to locate survivors amidst the debris.
Despite the extensive destruction, rescue teams remain hopeful of finding survivors. The earthquake has also caused significant damage to Morocco’s cultural heritage, including the historic Tinmel Mosque. The government has mobilised search and rescue operations, providing essential supplies and aid with the assistance of the military.
International support has been offered from Spain, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar. Morocco appreciates the aid and may consider accepting assistance from other countries. Morocco's Deadliest Earthquake In Six Decades Claims Over 2 800 Lives

Chief Fortune Charumbira has been removed as president of the Pan African Parliament (PAP) with elections for his replacement scheduled for October this year.
Charumbira became PAP president in June last year but following the dissolution of Zimbabwe’s parliament to pave way for elections on 23 August, Charumbira was also no longer a PAP MP where one’s term runs concurrently with the parliamentary term in their home country.
The then president of the Chiefs Council had a seat in Zimbabwe’s Senate courtesy of a quota reserved for traditional leaders.
During a meeting of the PAP in Johannesburg on Friday, chaired by acting president Ashebir Gayo, it was resolved that a vote would take place between October 16 and 18 to elect a new president, first vice president, and fourth vice president.
In a letter to the Clerk of Parliament Lindiwe Khumalo, Miles Sampa, the chairman of the Committee on Audit and Public Accounts said the vote will take place during a sitting of the PAP’s Third Ordinary Session of the Sixth Parliament.
Charumbira was recently replaced as president of the Chiefs Council by Chief Mtshana Khumalo of Bubi, Matabeleland North.

Buthelezi, the Founder and President Emeritus of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), and democratic South Africa’s first Minister of Home Affairs, passed away in the early hours of today, Saturday, 9 September 2023, just two weeks after the celebration of his 95th birthday.
Ramaphosa described Buthelezi as a formidable leader who has played a significant role in South Africa’s history for seven decades.

President Ramaphosa Mourns Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi

Zambia’s former First Lady Esther Lungu has been summoned by police for an interview on September 6 at 10 AM. The specific reasons for the police’s interest in her have not been disclosed.
This summons comes as her husband, former President Edgar Lungu, attended the inauguration of Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa on September 4, 2023, in Harare, Zimbabwe.
Raphael Nakacinda, the PF Information and Publicity Chairperson, alleges that President Hakainde Hichilema instructed the police to summon Esther Lungu after observing the warm reception Lungu received at Mnangagwa’s inauguration ceremony.
Hichilema, who currently chairs the SADC troika, had deployed election observers who determined that Zimbabwe’s harmonised election did not meet regional and international standards. It seems that Mnangagwa extended the invitation to Lungu as a response to Hichilema’s boycott of the inauguration.
According to Joseph Kalimbwe, a Zambian politician, author, and activist, authorities must target former President Lungu next. Kalimbwe, who held leadership positions in the African Union youth simulation in 2014 and the student representative council of the University of Namibia in 2017, made this statement on X (formerly Twitter). He said:

In May of this year, the Zambian police surrounded the residence of former President Edgar Lungu, demanding to search it as part of a corruption investigation. Raphael Nakacinda stated that the police forcibly entered the former president’s home in Lusaka. She said at the time:

It’s not only unconstitutional, but criminal — this government never to respect the supreme law of the land, which is the constitution, which confers the former president with immunity.

The police action occurred ten months after Zambia’s anti-money laundering agency summoned former First Lady Esther Lungu regarding her ownership of 15 luxury flats in Lusaka. Investigators suspected that the apartments were acquired through illicit means. The Lungus, through the Patriotic Front party spokesman, denied any wrongdoing. No charges were filed, and Lungu’s lawyer confirmed that the matter was closed.
Critics argue that the government’s anti-corruption campaign is being employed to target and intimidate political opponents. Several officials who served under former President Lungu have been arrested, and his family members have been questioned.
President Hakainde Hichilema has refuted allegations that his anti-corruption efforts are aimed at opponents. Hichilema’s United Party for National Development defeated Lungu’s party in 2021. Hichilema and Lungu are set to compete for the presidency in 2026.

Zambian Police Summon Former First Lady Esther Lungu

President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia has issued a warning to potential coup plotters, urging them not to threaten the country’s democratic rule and stability. Hichilema Warns Against Coup Plotters Endangering Zambia's Democracy And Stability

The death toll following a shootout between South African police and a gang of heavily armed cash-in-transit (CIT) robbers in Limpopo Province on Friday has risen to 19.
Police swooped in on a luxury villa in Makhado on Friday evening.
National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola that police intended “to arrest them before they go out and commit the crime”.
However, the police officers were met with gunfire by the gang and a shootout, which lasted about 90 minutes, ensued.
Initially, Police said 18 suspects were killed during the shootout, but while processing the scene on Saturday, they found another body of a male.
<a href="https://ewn.co.za/2023/09/03/limpopo-shootout-death-toll-rises-to-19-officer-loses-leg">Eyewitness News</a> quoted the Provincial Communication Officer at Limpopo Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), Matimba Maluleke, as saying:

As we were busy processing the scene, we discovered another body in the house. That brings the total of the deceased persons to 19 – 17 males and two females.
</blockquote>
He said police also discovered three vehicles allegedly stolen in Gauteng. Said Maluleke:

A seasoned Hawks officer involved in Friday’s shooting, Lieutenant Colonel Joe Coetzer, was injured during the shootout and has had his leg amputated.
Police said Coetzer was airlifted to hospital following the shootout. Despite medical intervention, surgeons could not save his leg.
Police Minister Bheki Cele said the fatal shooting of the suspects sent a strong message to criminals that police wouldn’t hesitate to respond to criminality.

Death Toll In Limpopo Shootout Rises To 19

Police in South Africa on Friday killed 18 suspected robbers during a shootout in Limpopo Province.
According to National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola, the suspects were planning a cash-in-transit (CIT) heist.
Speaking on Friday from the crime scene in Makhado, Masemola said the suspects were responsible for similar crimes in other provinces. He said:

We do believe this syndicate has been involved in a number of CITs in this province, Mpumalanga and Gauteng.
</blockquote>
Masemola said one police officer was “injured very seriously” in the shootout, which lasted about 90 minutes.
In a statement, the South African Police Service (SAPS), said an investigation began in January with the help of the country’s intelligence unit, and the police had been tracking the suspects’ movements for a few days. Part of the statement reads:

As soon as police approached the address, the group of suspects began shooting, and police retaliated. Sixteen males and two females were declared dead at the scene.

Masemola said that police intended “to arrest them before they go out and commit the crime”.
Cash truck heists happen regularly in South Africa, and in 2022, 10 suspects died during a cash-in-transit shootout with police.

South African Police Kill 18 Suspected Robbers In Shootout

French President Emmanuel Macron has affirmed that Ambassador Itte will not leave Niger, defying the junta’s deadline for his departure.
The military junta in Niger has since revoked the visa of the French ambassador and directed the police to expel him, after previously instructing him to leave the country. In a letter attributed to the Nigerien Ministry of Foreign Affairs and shared by local media, the junta stated that the ambassador’s diplomatic cards and visas, as well as those of his family members, have been cancelled. They have instructed the police to proceed with his expulsion, emphasizing that the decision is final.
The junta took this action after the French envoy, Sylvain Itte, refused to attend a scheduled meeting with Niger’s foreign minister and engaged in actions deemed contrary to Niger’s interests, according to the Nigerien foreign ministry.
The junta further warned that the ambassador no longer holds the privileges and immunities associated with his position as a member of the diplomatic personnel of the Embassy. However, the French presidency’s spokesperson stated that the ambassador remains in his position despite the junta’s demands.
French Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated its statement from August 25 stressing that “the putschists do not have the authority to make this demand.” The statement added:

The ambassador’s accreditation comes solely from the legitimately elected authorities in Niger.

Emmanuel Macron Defies Junta's Deadline Says French Ambassador Itte Won't Leave Niger

The death toll from a <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2023/08/31/south-africa-at-least-64-people-die-in-johannesburg-building-fire/">devastating fire in a hijacked building in Marshalltown, Johannesburg</a> has reached 74, with many more injured, according to <a href="https://www.enca.com/news/update-joburg-fire-death-toll-rises-74">eNCA News</a>. The cause of the fire remains unknown, and the exact number of injured individuals is yet to be determined. Emergency services are conducting search operations in the building, and the number of casualties is expected to rise.
The injured are being transported to Helen Joseph Hospital and South Rand Hospital for treatment, according to Gauteng Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko. The deceased will be taken to Diepkloof Mortuary. <a href="https://www.sabcnews.com/sabcnews/injured-in-joburg-cbd-fire-taken-to-helen-joseph-south-rand-hospitals/">SABC News</a> cite Nkomo-Ralehoko as saying:

The incident has been described as unfortunate by Johannesburg Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda, who mentioned that the building, originally intended for rehabilitating displaced women, was illegally occupied. Gwamanda said:

However due to unforeseen circumstances, the building ended up serving a different purpose.

The main reason here that there is a high death toll is that there is a lot of partitions and gates in between. They said people wanted to scream and get out but they could not. The body said on X, formerly Twitter, that it “strongly condemns the military takeover of power in the Republic of Gabon” and has decided “to immediately suspend the participation of Gabon in all activities of the AU, its organs and institutions until the restoration of constitutional order in the country, in line with AU instruments.“

Gabonese Army Has Staged A Coup, Annulling Recent Presidential Election Results

The appointment of Zimbabwean preacher Uebert Angel as the African Union’s Pan African Parliament (PAP) Ambassador for Interfaith Dialogue and Humanitarian Affairs has been revoked and terminated.
In a letter dated 28 August 2023 and addressed to Angel, the new Acting President of the Pan African Parliament, Dr. Gayo Asherbiri said the appointment was unprocedural.
The letter, which was copied to the Chairman of the Africa Union Commission (AUC) Moussa Faki Mahamat, the 3rd Vice President of PAP Lucia Maria Mendes Goncalves dos Passos, and the PAP Clerk Lindiwe Kumalo, read in part:

We noted that your name was announced recently as having been appointed as an ambassador for the pan-African Parliament.
Nearly all current members of PAP wondered how the appointment was done as it was not tabled in any bureau or plenary meeting stating the reasons for the appointment and likely benefits to PAP or Africa in general.
The minutes of said meetings would have also indicated a proposer and seconder from amongst bureau members or honorable PAP members as standard AU approval process of such appointments that leads to diplomatic status. 
Consequently; I am mandated by the current bureau and current members of PAP to advise the Prophet that the said appointment is hereby revoked.
The purported ambassadorial PAP has been declared null and void with immediate effect.

Uebert Angel’s Appointment As PAP Ambassador Revoked

The KwaZulu-Natal police have identified the suspects involved in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2023/02/11/south-africa-rapper-aka-shot-dead/">the shooting and killing</a> of rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes and his friend, chef Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane, according to a police statement. Forbes and Motsoane were assassinated in February outside the Wish restaurant on Durban’s Florida Road.
The police commissioner, Nhanhla Mkhwanazi, stated that a dedicated team of investigators is diligently building a strong case before making any arrests. The goal is to ensure a comprehensive and robust court case rather than rushing with an incomplete one. eNCA cites him as saying:

Police Identify Suspects In Shooting Of Rapper AKA And Chef Tebello "Tibz" Motsoane

Burkina Faso and Mali have deployed combat aircraft in response to the possibility of military intervention against Niger by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). West African military chiefs held a second day of talks in Ghana on Friday, preparing for a possible armed intervention in Niger after a coup removed President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26.
Meanwhile, Burkina Faso and Mali have emphasised that any military action against Niger would be considered a declaration of war against Burkina Faso and Mali, leading to their withdrawal from ECOWAS and the adoption of self-defence measures to support Niger’s armed forces and people. The military governments of Burkina Faso and Mali have expressed concerns that such intervention could destabilize the entire West African region.
A report aired on Niger’s state television highlighted joint efforts by Mali and Burkina Faso in support of Niger and the deployment of warplanes within Niger’s borders on Friday. The report also noted that the planes were Super Tucano fighter jets. It said:
