Zulu monarch King Misuzulu kaZwelithini has called off his wedding to his third fiancée, Nomzamo Myeni, which was scheduled for next week.
The announcement comes after the king’s first wife, Queen Ntokozo Mayisela, obtained a court interdict to block the marriage.
Earlier in January, King Misuzulu had revealed his plans to marry Myeni, sparking public anticipation for the royal wedding.
However, in a letter to Dr Nonhlanhla Mkhize, the KwaZulu-Natal government’s director general, dated 18 January 2025, the king stated that the wedding would no longer take place.
He cited reasons beyond the control of the royal house as the cause for the cancellation.
The letter further elaborates on the situation, though specific details were not disclosed.

I write to formally instruct the immediate withdrawal of all benefits and security detail previously assigned to Ms. Nomzamo Myeni.
Due to reasons beyond the control of the Royal House, the traditional wedding ceremonies involving Ms. Myeni have been called off.

The following actions must be implemented without delay:
1. Withdrawal of Benefits: Effective immediately, any benefits, allowances, or privileges granted to Ms. Myeni must be ceased.
2. Security Detail: The security detail assigned to Ms. Myeni is to be withdrawn by no later than 11:00 AM on 19 January 2025.
I trust that your office will facilitate the implementation of these directives promptly and ensure that all necessary measures are taken to finalize this matter.

Queen Ntokozo Mayisela has warned that if King Misuzulu kaZwelithini proceeds with his wedding to his third fiancée, Nomzamo Myeni, he would be committing bigamy—an offence involving a married person marrying someone else.
For over two centuries, Zulu kings have practised polygamy, with multiple marriages being culturally accepted. However, Queen Mayisela seeks to challenge this longstanding tradition.
In her court papers, she argues that her civil marriage to the king prohibits him from taking another wife, making the planned wedding to Myeni unlawful.
Cultural expert, Professor Musa Zulu, has weighed in on the issue. Speaking to <a href="https://www.ewn.co.za/2025/01/12/legal-system-at-the-moment-favours-king-misuzulus-first-wife-says-cultural-expert">EWN</a>, Zulu said that the situation is complex and involves both legal and cultural considerations. Said Zulu:

They can, however, have the event, it’s just that it will be impossible to register that marriage without divorcing the first wife, so the legal system at the moment favours kaMayisela.

Zambia police on Monday arrested a woman from the Garden Compound, Lusaka, along with her four children in connection with the murder of her husband. His body had reportedly been kept in their home for two years.
The woman, identified as 51-year-old prophetess Sylvia Mutoba Kalaba, kept her late husband’s skeleton for spiritual powers.
Authorities believe that she may have killed her 55-year-old husband, George Kalaba, for ritualistic purposes; however, Mutoba Kalaba has vehemently denied these accusations.
According to the <a href="https://www.maravipost.com/i-kept-my-husband-body-to-skeleton-stage-for-spiritual-powers-confesses-zambia-prophetess-sylvia-kalaba/">Maravi Post</a>, she claims her husband died of natural causes, as he suffered from asthma. 
Mutoba Kalaba said she preserved his skeleton to aid her in performing miracles, given her role as a prophetess. She said:

I was advised by a ritualist in Tanzania to do this in order to perform countless miracles and make money as I am a prophetess and through this.
I have helped a lot of people who have been flocking to my house of prayer to receive financial breakthroughs and other miracles.

Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga confirmed the arrest of Mutoba Kalaba and her children in connection with the discovery of skeletal remains in their home.

This case was initially reported as a missing person investigation by the deceased man’s elder brother.
The skeletal remains were found almost a year and a half after the family could not ascertain the man’s whereabouts.
The remains of George Kalaba discovered lying on a bed, were reduced to a skeleton, indicating he had been dead for a significant period.
Since July 2023, George’s family had been inquiring about his whereabouts, but Mutoba Kalaba reportedly denied them access to him.
The arrest followed a report made by George’s brother, Emmanuel Kalaba, 55, residing at House Number 1295 Chelstone Extension.
Hamoonga identified the suspects as Sylvia Mutoba Kalaba, the deceased’s wife, and her children: Natasha, 19; Sandra, 22; Wendi, 27; and a female juvenile.
When police followed up on the report, they found the family had locked themselves inside the house with the skeletal remains.
It is alleged that from July 2023 until January 2025, Mutoba Kalaba prevented family members from visiting George.
A tenant, Emmanuel, eventually learned that George had not been seen for over two years, raising concerns about his well-being.
Hamoonga said that the skeletal remains of George Kalaba have been collected and taken to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) Mortuary.
A postmortem was scheduled for January 15, 2025, to determine the cause of death.

South African police have ended a rescue operation at an abandoned gold mine in Stilfontein, believing they have brought out all the survivors and retrieved all the bodies.
The mine, located 2.5 kilometres deep with multiple shafts, levels, and a maze of tunnels, had trapped a group of illegal miners, known as “zama zamas” in the Zulu language, which roughly translates to “hustlers” or “chancers.”
According to the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/south-africa-miners-illegal-gold-mine-trapped-stilfontein-b0efe6ded81f2a96eba7374cff2fe9ca">Associated Press</a>, at least 78 miners were confirmed dead, and 246 survivors were rescued from one of the country’s deepest mines where they had been trapped while working illegally. 
The victims were suspected to have died of starvation or dehydration, although no official cause of death has been released.
The death toll is likely higher, as a community group reported retrieving nine bodies before the police operation started.
There have also been reports of an unconfirmed number of bodies and survivors being brought out sporadically during other community-led rescue efforts since last year.
The surprise announcement ending the operation came a day after the police minister said it would likely last until at least next week.
Maj.-Gen. Patrick Asaneng, the acting police commissioner for North West province, said rescuers would do a final sweep of the mine on Thursday.
The South African government’s decision last year to try to force out the miners by cutting off their food and other supplies was criticized by civic groups, who argued that the government’s refusal to stage a rescue sooner effectively left the miners to die of starvation or dehydration.
Some of the survivors were badly emaciated and barely able to walk, requiring assistance to reach ambulances.
All of them will be arrested and charged with illegal mining and trespassing, according to the police.
The revelation of this incident has sparked outrage, with South Africa’s second-biggest political party calling for an independent inquiry to determine “why the situation was allowed to get so badly out of hand.” 
Authorities have maintained that they were carrying out their mandate to “combat criminality” in the country.
Police reported seizing gold, explosives, firearms, and over $2 million in cash during the operation. The majority of the miners were foreign nationals from Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Lesotho, and were in South Africa illegally.
The government has taken a hardline stance on these miners who are often part of criminal syndicates and responsible for stealing more than US$1 billion in gold each year.

His presidency begins amidst a climate of deep political division following the October 9, 2024 elections marred by violence.
A local civil society group, Plataforma Decide, reports over 300 deaths in post-election clashes with security forces.
The inauguration day itself saw further bloodshed; Dr Wilker Dias of Plataforma Decide told <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cr7en1452xjo">BBC</a> that eight protesters, primarily supporters of defeated presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, were killed by police during demonstrations against Chapo’s ascension.
Mondlane, who secured 24% of the vote against Chapo’s 65%, rejected the election results, alleging rigging, and called for a national strike.
This call, coupled with the boycotts by Renamo and MDM, Mozambique’s leading opposition parties, contributed to the low-key atmosphere of the inauguration, with Maputo largely deserted and businesses closed due to the declared public holiday.
In his inaugural address to approximately 2,500 guests, Chapo pledged to prioritize national unity and human rights, stating, “together, we will restore patriotism and pride in being Mozambican.”
However, this commitment was immediately challenged as police dispersed crowds outside Independence Square with gunfire following the ceremony.
Chapo’s victory extends FRELIMO’s rule to 49 years. The new president, who took over from Filipe Nyusi, faces a significant challenge in uniting a nation deeply fractured by violence and allegations of electoral fraud.
Daniel Francisco Chapo was born on January 6, 1977, in Inhaminga, a town in Sofala province, the sixth of ten siblings.
Chapo’s early life was shaped by Mozambique’s civil war, which forced his family to relocate to a nearby district.
Chapo graduated with a Law degree from the Faculty of Law of Eduardo Mondlane University in Maputo in 2000. He later completed a Conservator and Notary course in 2004 and a master’s degree in Development Management from the Catholic University of Mozambique in 2014.
In addition to his academic achievements, Chapo had a diverse professional background. He taught Constitutional Law and Political Science, worked as an announcer at Rádio Miramar in Beira, and was appointed conservator for the Nacala-Porto district in 2005.
He later served as the administrator of the Palma district in Cabo Delgado province in 2015 and was appointed governor of Inhambane province in 2016.
Now married to Gueta Sulemane Chapo, with whom he has three children, Chapo is described by colleagues as a humble, hardworking, and patient leader. He is also known to be a devout Christian and a fan of basketball and football.
Chapo’s rise to the presidency is significant, as he is the first “born-free” President of Mozambique, having been born two years after the country’s independence from Portugal in 1975.

In a statement, Vincent Magwenya, spokesperson for the South African president, said Chapo’s inauguration offers an opportunity for the people of Mozambique to unite in the pursuit of peace, democracy, and development. He said:

It has been alleged that organised criminals hijack vehicles and approach homes under the guise of seeking help. Once granted entry, they reportedly kill occupants and harvest their body parts while they are still alive.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Lt Gen Hadebe condemned these rumours as baseless and untrue, reassuring the public that there is no truth to these horrifying claims. She said:

We strongly condemn the spreading of fake news, unverified information, rumours, or threats, as this causes panic, confusion, and, in some cases, incites potential violence. Legendary South African musician Doc Shebeleza, born Victor Bogopane, has passed away in hospital at the age of 51 after a prolonged illness.
The renowned businessman and kwaito veteran had been grappling with health issues for several years.
On December 2, 2024, Doc Shebeleza shared that he had undergone successful surgery, with plans for a second operation scheduled for February 2, 2025. 
Tragically, this second procedure was not to happen, as his family confirmed the heartbreaking news of his death to <a href="https://www.snl24.com/dailysun/celebs/legendary-kwaito-musician-doc-shebeleza-has-died-20250109">Daily Sun</a> on Thursday morning, January 9.
His daughter, Segaetsho, confirmed the news, saying “Yes, I can confirm that he passed away this morning.”
Segaetsho also said the family would release an official press statement.
In an emotional interview with Daily Sun in December 2024, Doc Shebeleza spoke candidly about the financial strain he faced due to his health struggles.
He revealed that he was spending over R20,000 on medication alone. At the time, he said his upcoming second surgery would cost a staggering R350,000 and he did not have the money.
Doc Shebeleza’s passing comes just days after the news of the death of singer and dancer Winnie Khumalo, who also succumbed to a short illness.
First gaining recognition in 1995 with his debut album Shebeleza, which featured the hit song “Ghets Ghetsa,” Doc Shebeleza rose to prominence with his 1996 album S’Kumfete.
This album produced several beloved tracks, including “Kum’nandi,” “Ebumnandini,” and “Ghetsa Ghetsa.”
In the 1990s, he founded the all-male group Amaskumfete, known for hits such as “Tsipa Tsipa.” Over the years, Doc Shebeleza released three more albums: Tiger (1997), Ebumnandini (2000), and Jiva Yoyo (2001).
His legacy was further underscored by the 2014 hit song “Doc Shebeleza” by Cassper Nyovest. Doc Shebeleza’s profound influence on the Kwaito genre inspired numerous artists, including Mandoza and Mapaputsi.

Protests have continued sporadically for more than two months, and Mondlane’s return could escalate the situation.
Civil society monitoring group Plataforma Decide reported that at least 278 people had died in the protests since mid-October when the electoral commission announced FRELIMO had won the elections.
FRELIMO has ruled Mozambique since the end of the war against Portuguese colonial rule in 1975.
Last year’s unrest hurt businesses and disrupted border access with neighbouring South Africa, while some people fled to neighbouring Malawi and Eswatini amid the violence.
On December 23, Mozambique’s top court, the Constitutional Council, confirmed FRELIMO’s victory in the election, sparking a fresh wave of protests.
Newly-elected President Daniel Chapo is set to be sworn in next week.

The EFF, South Africa’s fourth-largest political party, announced Ndlozi’s resignation on Thursday.
Ndlozi, who has served as an MP since May 2014, did not attend the party’s national congress at Nasrec, Johannesburg, in December 2024. The EFF’s press statement reads in part:

South African actress and singer Winnie Khumalo passed away on Tuesday at the age of 51 after a short illness.
Known for her long musical career that began in the 1980s, Khumalo also made appearances in popular South African TV series.
She is best remembered for her hit song “Live My Life” and for collaborating with prominent South African artists, including the late Brenda Fassie.
Her sister, Tshepi Akeepile, told SABC News that Khumalo passed away on the way to the hospital. She said:

Lt. General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who leads the Ugandan army’s land forces, said he wanted to behead the country’s most prominent opposition leader, according to Reuters.
Kainerugaba, who is also the son of Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, has made several controversial posts on social media, including a threat in 2022 to invade neighbouring Kenya.
He later apologized for that threat, saying some of his posts are meant to be ironic.
Kainerugaba is considered by many to be the heir apparent to his father, who has governed Uganda since 1986.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday evening, Kainerugaba said his father, whom he referred to by the honorific Mzee, was the only person protecting opposition leader Bobi Wine from him. He posted:

Military authorities said this was a drive to improve army discipline following territorial losses due to soldiers fleeing their posts.
The soldiers were sentenced on Tuesday in Lubero, a town in DRC’s eastern North Kivu province. The region has seen nearly three years of conflict with the Rwanda-backed M23 insurgency, alongside other militia violence, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/congo-sentences-13-soldiers-death-bid-boost-discipline-2025-01-01/">as reported by Reuters</a>.
Local army spokesperson Mak Hazukay said intensified fighting in the Lubero territory has been exacerbated by instances of soldiers abandoning their positions, which has allowed the enemy to gain ground. He said:

Monitoring group Plataforma Decide reported that the death toll had reached 125 since the court’s decision and 252 since late October.
On Christmas Day, over 1,500 prisoners escaped from Maputo Central Prison, taking advantage of the national protests following the disputed polls.
According to <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/mozambicans-flee-neighbouring-malawi-amid-post-election-unrest-2024-12-27/">Reuters</a>, some businesses, including banks, were closed in Mozambique’s capital, Maputo, on Friday, and patrols were set up in some areas.
A senior Malawian official said that as of Wednesday, 2,182 Mozambican households fleeing the violence had crossed into Malawi’s Nsanje district, which borders Mozambique.
In a letter to the country’s commissioner for refugees seen by Reuters, Nsanje district commissioner Dominic Mwandira described the situation as dire, with people urgently requiring humanitarian assistance.
Protests in Mozambique intensified after the Constitutional Council announced on December 23 that FRELIMO’s presidential candidate, Daniel Chapo, secured approximately 65% of the vote, a decrease from the 70% reported by the electoral commission in October.
The Council also adjusted the number of parliamentary seats awarded to FRELIMO, though the reasons for these changes were not disclosed.

The king called on the nation to unite in support of the process to appoint Buthelezi’s successor, “who will carry forward the torch of leadership.”
King Misuzulu kaZwelithini announced Buthelezi’s appointment at the commemoration of the Battle of Isandlwana in Nquthu, KwaZulu-Natal, in January.
Buthelezi served for about 11 months after the death of the former Zulu prime minister and Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) founder, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, last year.
He took over the position following the death of Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi in September 2023. Prince Buthelezi had held the position of traditional prime minister for almost 70 years and worked with three different kings since 1954.
In a similar move in February 2024, King Misuzulu dismissed Ingonyama Trust Board chairperson Thanduyise Mzimela and appointed himself as the new chair of the trust, which administers rural land in KwaZulu-Natal.
For the first time since its formation in 1994, the king, as the sole trustee of Ingonyama, will also chair the ITB.

Over 1,500 prisoners escaped from Maputo Central Prison on Christmas Day, taking advantage of national protests following the disputed October 9 polls.
Police Chief Bernardino Rafael said the prisoners escaped when protesters vandalised a government building and police cars. Said Rafael:

Institute for Security Studies crime analyst Willem Els told The Citizen that it was concerning the escaped criminals were armed and dangerous, having managed to disarm prison warders of weapons and ammunition. Said Els:

We know that 100 of the prisoners were rearrested and killed by the soldiers, but we don’t know how many of them are still out there.
Since there is unrest in that country, we will see an influx of political asylum seekers coming into the country and some of the criminals might take advantage of that to sneak into the country.
It is not easy to control many people. Remember that some years ago, most of the soldiers were forced to take packages and you can guess what happened when the money was finished.
You may find that some of them were forced to use their skills in the wrong way and be part of the criminals.

Labane, from Mpumalanga, holds a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) degree. However, she allegedly used a fraudulent matric certificate to apply to Walter Sisulu University, where she obtained her degree.
Mpumalanga provincial spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Monica Nyuswa, confirmed to <a href="https://www.iol.co.za/news/south-africa/mpumalanga/woman-without-matric-who-earned-r12-million-working-as-a-teacher-to-face-trial-next-year-1d845447-11fb-46cd-8572-7756647136f8?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAAR2x4BtOZxYyrfifPwpVq2AQsdM7OFvh8jhrzWDG3Lw3s8OtZmhiGgZscY0_aem_Xg_jHu60subgkf-ruTU9aA">IOL</a> that Labane’s case has been postponed to March for trial.
Labane, who is not in custody, has made several court appearances before the Amersfoort Magistrate’s Court in Mpumalanga.
She was arrested by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, also known as the Hawks, on charges of fraud.
Lt. Colonel Dineo Sekgotodi, a provincial Hawks spokesperson in Mpumalanga, said that Ntombelanga Pretty Labane had been employed as a teacher since 2016.
It is alleged that on September 1, 2016, Labane applied for a business and accounting teacher’s position at Hlelimfundo Secondary School in Amersfoort, under Mpumalanga’s Volksrust circuit.  Said Sekgotodi:

Labane submitted a CV, copies of a fraudulent matric certificate, a B-ED degree, and SACE (SA Council for Educators) certificates to the school principal, who informed the school management team to consider her application. They then agreed that she is suitable for the post.

The principal notified the School Governing Body (SGB) of the decision made by the school management team, and the SGB expressed its support for the decision. Said Sekgotodi:

The management team allowed Labane to apply for the post, and she was given an application document called EDU 1 to apply for the post. SGB members and the principal signed the application forms on September 12, 2016.
All relevant documents were sent to the circuit manager who signed and took them to the Department of Education’s district office at Ermelo.
The application was sent to the Human Resource Persal registry section, and it was forwarded to the Human Resource Provisioning section.
After the human resource provisioning section checked it, it was forwarded to the employment section where it was captured and Labane was employed.
</blockquote>
Labane’s troubles began when a whistleblower, aware that the woman had not completed her matriculation, reported the issue to the Public Service Commission offices in Mpumalanga. This led to an investigation by the Public Service Commission. Said Sekgotodi:

After the investigations, findings and recommendations were made.
The principal, circuit manager and the district office were asked about a fraudulent matric certificate and they reported that they did not notice that it was fraudulent as they do not have detectors to verify the validity of the documents.
The Public Service Commission referred the matter to the Hawks’ Secunda-based serious commercial crime investigation (unit) for further investigation in July 2022.
</blockquote>
The Hawks spokesperson confirmed to IOL that Labane is not in custody, as no arrest warrant has been issued against her.
Further investigations by the Hawks revealed that Labane does not possess a Grade 12 certificate.
She attempted the matric exams four times— in 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006— but failed each time. Said the Hawks:

Labane then forged the matric certificate by putting the certificate number: 040 9517 7028 B which belonged to another candidate called Nozipho Ritta Ngema.
The results that were appearing on her fraudulent matric certificate were not her real results.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa, the current chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), has urged political parties in Mozambique to respect the results of the October 9, 2024, presidential election, which the country’s Constitutional Council confirmed on December 23.

The suspects reportedly told the police they had been promised over 2 million Zambian kwacha (£58,000; $73,000) for their “mission.”
