The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed a deadly road traffic accident on May 27, 2023, at the 29-kilometre peg along Kwekwe-Gokwe Road involving a Just Raw Bus that killed seven (7), while 43 others sustained injuries.
According to reports, a Yutong bus with 62 passengers onboard, heading towards Kwekwe, veered off the road to the right, hit trees, overturned once, and landed on its left side.
In a statement seen by Pindula News, ZRP said the deceased victims’ bodies were taken to Kwekwe General Hospital mortuary for post-mortem, while the injured are receiving treatment at the same hospital. Reads the statement:

Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the National Police spokesperson, confirmed that a Just Raw Bus burst its right front tyre on the Kwekwe-Gokwe Highway on Saturday evening.
He said the bus was travelling from Gokwe to Beitbridge when the driver lost control, resulting in seven fatalities, with six dying at the scene and one passing away at Kwekwe General Hospital. The number of injured victims is yet to be ascertained, and investigations are ongoing. Further details will be provided as they become available.

Kwekwe-Gokwe Road: Just Raw Bus Accident Kills 7, Injures 43 People

A tragic car accident just outside Gaborone on Saturday morning claimed the lives of two Zimbabwean Salvation Army church leaders, Major Sheila Rutanhira and Major Isaiah Motsi, as well as Pretty Tore.
The surviving spouse of Major Motsi, Siphiwe, was fortunate to survive the crash. The leaders had been returning to their post in Botswana after attending a funeral in Zimbabwe. The Salvation Army Zimbabwe issued a statement expressing shock and grief at the loss of these esteemed members.
Siphiwe Motsi is receiving medical attention for injuries to her hand and jaw and is expected to undergo surgery at Mahalapye Hospital. Reads the church’s statement:

Car Crash Kills 2 Zimbabwean Salvation Army Leaders Near Gaborone

The <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">Zimbabwe Republic</a> Police confirms a <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">fatal road traffic accident</a> on May 21, 2023, at around 6 pm, at the 15-kilometre mark on Kwekwe-Gokwe Road.
A <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">Nissan NP300</a> with three passengers collided with a <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">Honda Fit vehicle</a> with eight passengers. Six people died, including both drivers and two passengers on the spot. Two more passengers died at Kwekwe General Hospital. Five injured victims are at <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">Kwekwe General Hospital</a>, and two others are at Gweru General Hospital. In a statement seen by Pindula News, police national spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, urged motorists to be patient and follow all road rules and regulations. The bodies of the deceased were taken to Kwekwe General Hospital Mortuary for <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">post-mortem</a>, and three victims have been identified. A Nissan NP300 with three (03) passengers on board, which was travelling towards Kwekwe, was involved in a head-on collision with a Honda Fit vehicle with eight (08) passengers on board, which was travelling in the opposite direction. Three (3) victims were positively identified by their next of kin as:-Edward Mutimbu, a male adult aged 40 of Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service, Headquarters, Tafadzwa Chokera, a male aged 24 of Zhombe Business Centre, Anna Muzeziwa a female adult aged 42 of Zhombe Mission Hospital.
The other three (3) victims are yet to be identified by their next of kin.
The bodies of the victims were taken to Kwekwe General Hospital Mortuary for post mortem whilst five (5) of the injured victims are admitted at Kwekwe General Hospital. The other two (02) victims are admitted at Gweru General Hospital.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police implores motorists to be patient on the roads and above all adhere to all road rules and regulations.

Kwekwe-Gokwe Road Accident Kills 6 People

Eddie Chanetsa, the ZANU PF Chimurenga district chairman in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Mazowe/">Mazowe</a>, allegedly died on Friday after accidentally drinking poison thinking it was alcohol.
An official confirmed that he had consumed an animal chemical he had mistaken for alcohol, which he added to a bottle of beer. Chanetsa was rushed to Howard Hospital where he was declared dead upon admission. He had been drinking small quantities of illicit beer at the time of the accident. Chanetsa’s funeral is set to take place today in Chiweshe.
An official told Bulawayo24.com that he died at Howard Hospital where he had been rushed after consuming poison. The unnamed official is quoted as saying:

I can confirm a sad incident in our district where Chanetsa mistook animal chemical that he had sought from neighbours for alcohol.
He was drinking small illicit beers so he put the chemical in a  bottle of beer and on his way home he drank the chemical thinking it was beer, he was rushed to Howard Hospital where he died upon admission.

ZANU PF Official Dies After Drinking Poison Thinking Its Alcohol

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the death of a 9-year-old girl who died after falling while running away from masquerades (Zvigure) at a school in Mabvuku, Harare on May 15, 2023.

Masquerades, also known as “Zvigure,” are traditional dancers who wear masks and perform during cultural ceremonies in Zimbabwe. It is unclear why they were at the school in Mabvuku, Harare, but it is possible that they were hired to perform or were part of a cultural event taking place at the school. The circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation by the authorities.
The dances originated among the Chewa ethnic group. The Chewa people are primarily found in Malawi, Zambia, and Mozambique, with smaller populations in Zimbabwe and Tanzania.
The history of Zvigure in Zimbabwe can be traced back to the early 1900s when Chewa migrants brought the dance to the country. Over time, the dance has become an integral part of Zimbabwean culture and is performed during traditional ceremonies, such as weddings and initiation rites.

Schoolgirl Dies While Running From Zvigure At A Harare School

A head-on collision between two haulage trucks along the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2023/01/03/harare-masvingo-beitbridge-highway-rehabilitation-400km-of-580km-completed-opened-to-traffic/">Masvingo-Beitbridge</a> highway yesterday resulted in a pile-up of vehicles. Four vehicles were completely destroyed by fire as a result of the accident, including two trucks, a Honda Fit, and a Nissan Almera.
The incident took place near the Chivi Turn-Off tollgate at the 55km peg. The number of people in the affected vehicles or any potential casualties is yet to be confirmed.
The Fire Brigade managed to extinguish the fire, but not before it had caused extensive damage to the two haulage trucks. Nearby villagers were alarmed by the thick black smoke emanating from the site and rushed to the scene to offer assistance.
Police and other good Samaritans transported the survivors to Chivi District Hospital for evaluation. Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa, the Masvingo provincial police spokesperson, stated that investigations into the incident were ongoing and that it was not yet clear if there were any casualties. <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/four-vehicles-burnt-to-shells-in-accident/">The Herald</a> quotes him as saying:

Some members of the public who commented on the case expressed shock that the Fire Brigade had responded swiftly. One important issue that came out is that of fire hydrants which many property owners are not installing.
Process of Installing Fire Hydrants:
To install a fire hydrant, one must follow the set regulations and guidelines from the local authority. The first step is to engage the local authority to obtain the necessary permits and approvals. You Need Fire Hydrants For Firefighting In Emergencies

Chief Zephania Sigola, one of Zimbabwe’s oldest traditional leaders from <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Mzingwane">Umzingwane district</a> in Matabeleland South, has died at the age of 96.
His death was confirmed by Chief Mtshana Khumalo, the vice president of the Zimbabwe Chiefs Council. Chief Khumalo told the Chronicle:

We are devastated as a region because he was a fountain of knowledge, he was someone that we could approach for advice. A huge gap has been left by his passing on.

Chief Sigola From Umzingwane District Has Died

Four people died, and thirteen others sustained injuries in a head-on collision between an Iveco bus with 35 passengers and an Isuzu double cab vehicle with 17 passengers on April 30, 2023, at around 3:20 pm along Banket-Mazvikadei Road.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said The ZRP confirmed the accident. In a statement seen by Pindula News, police said victims were taken to the mortuary. Reads the statement:

The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident in which four people were killed whilst thirteen others were injured when an Iveco bus with 35 passengers on board was involved in a head-on collision with an Isuzu double cab vehicle with seventeen passengers on board on 30/04/23 at about 1520 hours at the 4-kilometre peg along Banket-Mazvikadei Road. The bodies of the victims were taken to Banket Hospital mortuary for post-mortem whilst the injured are admitted at the same hospital.

The police also reported that on April 30, 2023, a Honda Fit carrying four passengers veered off the road and overturned several times before landing on its roof at the 92.5 km peg along Harare-Chirundu Road. One person died, and four others were injured and taken to Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital for treatment. The body of the deceased was taken to the hospital’s mortuary.
The identities of the victims in both accidents have not been disclosed yet.

Four People Die, 13 Injured In Banket-Mazvikadei Road Accident

Twenty passengers were injured when a <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/?s=zebra+kiss">Zebra Kiss bus</a> travelling to <a href="https://wiki.pindula.co.zw/Mutare">Mutare</a> veered off the road on Tuesday night.

Eyewitnesses reported that the Zebra Kiss bus driver lost control while negotiating a curve at Mutare Teachers College, possibly to avoid a collision with a truck. 
This accident comes barely weeks after a Zebra Kiss bus driver was <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/harare-nyamapanda-accident-zebra-kiss-driver-sentenced-to-2-years-imprisonment/">sentenced to two years in prison</a> for reckless driving after a bus he was driving was involved in an accident that killed one person earlier this year.
The driver was filmed obstructing a Rimbi Travel and Tours bus that was trying to overtake. When the Zebra Kiss bus overtook a slow-moving vehicle, the Rimbi Tours driver could not react quickly enough to avoid hitting the vehicle, resulting in an accident that killed one person and injured several others.

20 Passengers Injured As Zebra Kiss Bus Veers Off The Road

Two members of President Mnangagwa’s escort team were killed and two others were seriously injured on Saturday when the vehicle they were in collided with a stationary haulage truck near <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Kwekwe">Kwekwe</a>.
The National Police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Paul_Nyathi">Paul Nyathi</a>, confirmed the accident yesterday. However, he did not provide any further information at this time. He told <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200010612/ed-aides-die-in-horror-crash">NewsDay</a>:

Sketchy details showed that the accident occurred around 2 pm about 15km from Kwekwe along the Harare-Bulawayo Highway. Reports suggest that the accident involved a Toyota Prado with registration number AFO 3100 and a haulage truck registration number JX 25 XC GP. The Toyota Prado had four people on board, who seemed to be part of the advance Presidential escort.
It is alleged that the driver of the Toyota Prado, Edmore Nyamadzawo Chingwaro (37) fell asleep behind the wheel and the vehicle veered off the road.
Chingwaro and Sorobhi Chirima (46) died in the accident, while Zvidzai Gava (43) and Tasiyana Makanganwa (40) sustained serious injuries. After receiving initial treatment at Kwekwe General Hospital, the two injured passengers were airlifted to Harare for further treatment. The haulage truck had stopped by the roadside to allow escort vehicles to pass.
Two years ago, a Zimbabwe Republic Police outrider riding a motorbike as part of the First Lady’s motorcade was killed in a head-on collision with a Toyota Altezza at a spot known as “PaJones” on the Chinhoyi-Chirundu Highway between Lion’s Den and Chinhoyi.  The First Lady, Auxillia, was returning from Mhangura, where she had made donations for her philanthropic organization. The driver of the Toyota Altezza is said to not have given way.

President Mnangagwa’s Escort Team Members Die In An Accident

A pastor at a local apostolic sect church drowned at Lumene Falls in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Mzingwane">Umzingwane District</a> while baptising congregants.
The incident occurred on 1 April at around 8 AM, the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/madzibaba-drowns-during-baptism-ceremony/">Chronicle</a> reported citing Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Loveness Mangena. She said the body of Amukela Ncube (48) from Nkayi is still trapped in the river. She said:

I can confirm that we recorded a sudden death case of drowning. Amukela Ncube who is a pastor of an apostolic sect church went to Lumene Falls with congregants to conduct a baptism service. Ncube stepped into the river to check the depth of the water where he wanted to baptise the congregants and drowned.

Insp Mangena said a sub-aqua team tried to retrieve Ncube’s body yesterday but failed as he is stuck in between rocks and there is a lot of pressure from the water. She said the rescue mission was still ongoing. Insp Mangena urged members of the public to desist from entering undesignated water bodies without protective clothing. She also urged people to seek the services of guides.
Umzingwane District Development Coordinator, Mr Peter Mahlathini who is also the District Civil Protection Committee Chairperson said he will visit the incident scene for an assignment. He said if the sub-aqua team fails to retrieve the body they will engage mining companies to assist in the rescue mission.
Ncube is not the only pastor who has drowned while baptising people. The problem of drowning is common among apostolic sects that use rivers for baptism purposes.

Pastor Drowned While Baptising Congregants

A Chinhoyi family was also involved in an accident on Sunday while it was on its way to Harare for a church service at United Family International Church (UFIC).
It is alleged that the daughter who was driving a Honda Fit failed to negotiate a curve just after the Mapinga Great Dyke escarpment.
The accident claimed the life of the father on the spot leaving four other family members critical.
In another case, four Banket youths died in an accident that occurred on Sunday night near Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) fields, located a few kilometres from Chinhoyi. Three youths died on the scene while the other is said to have died at Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital.
Mashonaland West police spokesperson, Inspector Margaret Chitove confirmed the accident before referring questions to the National Spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Paul_Nyathi">Paul Nyathi.</a>
The four, all from Banket, were coming from a popular drinking spot in Chinhoyi. The vehicle was engulfed in a ball of flames after colliding with a haulage truck.
Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is investigating a hit-and-run road traffic accident case which occurred at the 33km peg along Gweru-Zvishavane Road on the 1st of April 2023 at around 2100 hours. It is alleged that a 37-year-old man was hit by an unknown motorist and died on the spot. Police are appealing to members of the public with information on the case to approach any nearest Police station.
Road traffic accidents may be caused by poor road infrastructure, human error, poorly maintained vehicles, overloaded vehicles, unsafe pedestrian behaviour, lack of road safety education, poor enforcement of traffic laws, poor visibility, wildlife on the roads, and inadequate emergency response.
Authorities say human error, such as speeding, reckless driving, drunk driving, and failure to observe traffic laws, is the leading cause of road accidents in Zimbabwe. Both motorists and pedestrians have the responsibility of making roads safer.

Chinhoyi Family In Accident On Way To UFIC Service, 4 Youths Die

Tropical Cyclone Freddy has killed at least 326 people after it ripped through southern Malawi, according to the country’s Department of Disaster Management Affairs.
One of the hardest-hit areas is Chilowe, a township near the city of Blantyre. Located below a hill, the township saw water gushing down from above on Sunday night.
Authorities say over 30 people from the area have died and dozens remain missing as search and rescue efforts continue, <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/03/15/africa/malawi-death-toll-cyclone-freddy-intl/index.html">CNN</a> reported.
People could be seen on Monday using shovels, even bare hands, to search for the people in the rubble, the publication added.
 
The Malawi Ministry of Natural Resources and Climate Change said Tuesday that the cyclone was “weakening but will continue to cause torrential rains associated with windy conditions in most parts of Southern Malawi districts.” 
Charles Kalemba, a commissioner for the Department of Disaster Management Affairs agency, told CNN Tuesday that the situation had worsened in southern Malawi.
Malawi’s Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services warned Monday that “the threat of damaging winds and heavy flooding remains very high.”
Kalemba added that an improvement in weather was expected from Wednesday. 
In Mozambique, at least 10 people were killed and 13 injured in the Zambezia province, according to state broadcaster Radio Mozambique, citing the National Institute of Disaster Risk Management.
Cyclone Freddy has broken records for the longest-lasting storm of its kind after making landfall in Mozambique for a second time, more than two weeks after the first.
More than 22,000 people have been displaced by the tropical storm, according to Radio Mozambique.

Cyclone Freddy: AFM Of Zimbabwe In Solidarity With AFM Malawi

Headman Nkunzi, born July Thompson Tshuma of <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Tsholotsho">Tsholotsho</a> has died and has been declared a liberation war hero.
He was 74.
Headman Nkunzi died on Sunday last week at his homestead in Tshabanda after a long battle with cancer, according to the Chronicle.
In addition to the liberation war hero status, the Government accorded the deceased a State assisted funeral.
Nkunzi will be buried at his homestead tomorrow (Sunday) morning.
The deceased’s young brother, Stephen Mpabanga Tshuma, said the family and community had lost a unifier who everyone looked upon. Said Mr Tshuma:

He was the eldest in our family and as the most senior we all looked up to him. He was a unifier who socialised with everyone in his community. He was a peaceful man and as such there was no violence even political fights in the three wards he covered. Headman Nkunzi ruled over ward 18, ward 19, and ward 20 in Tjefunye and Nkunzi areas and had 168 village heads under him.
The Nkunzi chieftaincy is one of those that were dismantled by the white colonial rule and Government was working on restoring it.
Headman Nkunzi was the regent that the family and community looked up to, to revive the chieftaincy.
Ward 19 councillor Pios Ncube said the community had lost a leader.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is investigating a fire incident which occurred on Wednesday in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Beitbridge">Beitbridge</a> in which twin sisters died.
In a report seen by Pindula News, police said the twin sisters were burnt beyond recognition after the fire erupted at Impala Extension suburb, Beitbridge. Reads the report:

The parents of the children had left the children at home while attending a local meeting.
On 25/02/23, the body of Resistance Mhlanga (19) of Banda Village, Chief Mabhikwa, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Jotsholo_Secondary_School">Jotsholo</a> was retrieved from the water. The boy drowned whilst trying to cross the flooded Gwayi River.

A 17-year-old boy has been mauled to death by dogs in Trelawney Village, 14 km south-west of Banket—a development which has left people in the area terrified, <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/">Pindula News</a> can exclusively-reveal. 
The victim, Wilson Chengetai, was working as a cowboy at Rugezha residence, owned by one Derrick Rugezha, who has a breed of dogs numbering over 50.
On the fateful day (Tuesday), according to villagers, the late Wilson returned from his cowboy duties and decided to pick up a raincoat at Rugezha residence before walking home, since it was raining. 
Upon arrival, he was viciously attacked by dogs until he breathed his last.
Due to the attack, the boy’s face was disfigured and missing both eyes when his body was taken to Banket Hospital Mourtary, according to Banket Police sources.
A villager in the area who spoke to Pindula News and asked not to be named, said Rugezha spent the night with the boy’s body before calling the police the following morning. He said:

As a community, we are still in shock. We all know that Rugezha’s dogs are dangerous. They have on several occasions killed goats in the area, but their owner says he is untouchable, hence we can’t do anything about it.
But for the dogs to then attack a human being and kill him, it’s something else. Also, Rugezha had the boy’s body in his house overnight before calling the police, which is shocking. But considering the way he boasts about having friends at Banket Police, I doubt if anything is done.

The late Wilson’s aunt, who initially did not want to publicly comment on the issue, expressed shock on the manner in which Wilson lost his life.

I’m his aunt. I have been taking care of him since his mother died in June last year. His father also died.
He has been working at the Rugezha residence for sometime. Mr Rugezha breeds all kinds of dogs, but I never expected this could happen.
In fact, I’m still not convinced on the explanation I was given with regards to circumstances leading to his death. The police just came and took the boy’s body without giving us any explanation, they just said we cannot view his body even before burial.

Rugezha is said to be a menace in the Trelawney area, with some villagers saying he once beat-up an elderly man named Maundura Muchenje for trying to stand up for villagers.

Dogs Maul 17-year-old Boy To Death In Banket, Owner Terrorizing Villagers

Motorists using High Glen Road during the evening are urged to be cautious when approaching the Crowborough Road intersection, popularly known as “PamaChina”.
There is an influx in the number of cases involving vehicle and valuables theft at that intersection between 19:00 and 23:00.
Criminals take advantage of cars slowing down due to speed bumps and pounce on unsuspecting motorists. 
They (criminals) break vehicle windows using sharp objects and take valuables and in worst cases, scare drivers with weapons leading to vehicle theft.  
Last night alone, two separate cases which occurred within an hour, were reported at Marimba Police Station.
Motorists are also urged to be cautious of a white Toyota Hiace without registration number at that intersection, as it is believed to be involved in the syndicate.
Motorists are also urged to ensure that windows are closed when approaching that intersection.

Mafume, speaking at a Council function today, scoffed at those threats, saying they don’t many any sense at all.  He said:

A Zimbabwean man who is one of the survivors of the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Lakes,_Rivers,_Bridges_and_Waterfalls_in_Zimbabwe">Limpopo</a> bus crash that claimed at least 21 lives and left more than 60 people injured has described the accident as the “worst event” he has seen in his 59 years of life.
Jacob Sibanda said it was God’s choice to keep him alive or take his life together with the 21 others.
The bus collided head-on with a cash-in-transit van that was allegedly trying to overtake another vehicle on the N1 outside Louis Trichardt in Limpopo.
The bus rolled off a bridge and into a river during the collision which took place outside the Hendrik Verwoerd tunnel heading towards Musina on Monday evening.
<a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/https-www-newzimbabwe-com-zimbabwean-survivor-recalls-sa-horror-bus-crash-that-claimed-21-lives-left-more-than-60-injured/">New Zimbabwe</a> cites law enforcement officials as saying the bus was ferrying passengers from Louis Trichardt to nearby villages including Nzhelele, Tshikombani and Siloam.
The Zimbabwean national told Pretoria News yesterday that he was trying to get hold of his wife in Zimbabwe to inform her that he had survived the Limpopo bus crash. 
Sibanda lives in Louis Trichardt and was going to meet his wife to hand over groceries for their children in Zimbabwe.

I cannot remember what happened. I normally take the food to Beit Bridge where I meet my wife. But this time it was decided that she take a bus to Siloam so we could exchange parcels here because I needed to be at work in the evening.
This must have been the worst moment of my life. It was horrific because my eyes were wide open, but I don’t remember a thing. There was a loud bang and the next thing I remember I was in water and being carried by people.
I don’t know how I ended up in the water. I truly thought I was dead. I’m very happy to be alive because it was God’s will.

Sibanda, a self-employed merchant in Louis Trichardt, was among the few who sustained mild injuries. Others are still in critical condition in Siloam and Elim hospitals.
Paramedics and rescue personnel were able to retrieve 19 bodies from the crash.
Two other people died in hospital while the search for others in the nearby rivers continues as some were swept away.
