Torbjørn “Thor” Pedersen, a man from Denmark has completed a ten-year journey around the world without flying which he embarked on in 2013. He started his journey on October 10, 2013, and completed it almost ten years later on May 24, 2023. He left his job, girlfriend, and family behind.
In early 2020, the 44-year-old was stuck in Hong Kong for two years following the outbreak of COVID-19. After acquiring an employment visa and Hong Kong residency, Pedersen married his fiancé, Le, via a US-based virtual wedding service as Hong Kong prohibited foreign travellers at that time. The decision enabled Le to become a resident and visit Pedersen in Hong Kong, where they spent 100 days together, which was their longest stretch of time together since Pedersen left Denmark in 2013. They hiked the MacLehose Trail, which is 62 miles long at more than half the elevation of Mount Everest, side by side in one go.
After Tonga, he came to Vanuatu where he was joined by Le for their in-person wedding, according to CNN. 
Pedersen said his journey was not just about visiting every country but also about celebrating the kindness of people and sharing a positive outlook on the world. He said he met warm, friendly, and helpful people all around the world who offered him tea, meals, introductions, translation support, or simply provided directions. 
Following his visit to the last country, Maldives, Torbjørn “Thor” Pedersen took a 33-day voyage back home by boarding the MV Milan Maersk, a massive container ship measuring about 1,310 feet long, or roughly 3.6 soccer fields. Pedersen reflected on the gradual changes in the view outside his porthole until he finally arrived in Denmark, where he was greeted by his loved ones.
On July 26, Pedersen arrived at the Port of Aarhus, Denmark, where he was greeted by roughly 150 people who had been following his journey. The cheering crowds included his wife Le, father, siblings, friends, project partners, and supporters who were waiting to celebrate his accomplishment. He said:

I’ve seen many tearful eyes since I got back – people have come up to hug me sobbing. I have also received a lot of gifts – Danish beer, milk, foods – and got to meet people who have been following my social media from Colombia, Australia, Norway… that was amazing.

Though he was still processing the fact that his journey was over, Pedersen said he intends to spend more time with is wife. He said:

We have a lot of things to celebrate. While I was traveling, she accomplished so many things – she completed a medical degree, finished her PhD, started working at a pharmaceutical company, got a promotion, completed two full Ironman [triathlons]… she’s a superwoman.
</blockquote>
From start to finish, Pedersen tallied up some incredible statistics during his travels:  3,576 days, 379 container ships, 158 trains, 351 buses, 219 taxis, 33 boats, and 43 rickshaws. He crossed 223,000 miles, or the equivalent of nine journeys around the Earth – and that’s not including the long voyage home.
Pedersen is collaborating with Canadian filmmaker Mike Douglas to complete a documentary titled “The Impossible Journey” on his project. He also plans to write a book about his journey and channel his experiences into motivational speaking engagements, a skill he has developed over the past decade. Pedersen hopes to inspire people to never give up and make a living by engaging with people, making them laugh, and inspiring them to learn.

The Impossible Journey: Danish Man Completes Ten-year World Journey Without Flying

British billionaire Richard Branson and his family spent considerable time on a tour of Zimbabwe’s prime wildlife resort areas including canoeing down the Zambezi River during a visit to the southern African country.
Branson, who is the founder of the Virgin Group, visited Zimbabwe with friends, his sister, and his daughter-in-law.
He arrived aboard a Fast Jet commercial flight at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport.
<a href="https://www.news24.com/news24/africa/news/british-billionaire-richard-branson-enjoys-zimbabwes-wildlife-during-two-week-visit-20230713">News24</a> reported that Branson’s visit to Zimbabwe ahead of the 23 August 2023 general elections is a confidence booster for the business community.
At the end of his visit, Branson posted pictures of him canoeing down the Zambezi River, enjoying a sunset with his family, and watching elephants on his website.
He said it was not his first visit to Zimbabwe. He wrote:

Tim Evans, 59, is a medical doctor, who used to be assigned to the late Queen Elizabeth II as well as the rest of the royal family at Buckingham Palace.
He spent time on wildlife conservation projects that include the Zambezi Elephant Fund and Wilderness Destinations Ruckomechi Camp, owned by a charity he co-founded, The Rise Fund.
Branson has had a keen interest in southern African politics and is one of the founders of The Elders, a group initially led by the late former South African head of state, Nelson Mandela.
In 2010, Branson founded Enterprise Zimbabwe, a charity to urge investors to pour money into Zimbabwe, adding that it was wrong for the world to deny Zimbabwe the capital it needed to rebuild during the Government of National Unity.

British Billionaire Richard Branson Says He Enjoyed Zimbabwe's Wildlife During 2-week Visit

The UK government has advised its citizens who plan to travel to Zimbabwe to check the current <a href="https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/zimbabwe/entry-requirements#entry-rules-in-response-to-coronavirus-covid-19">Entry restrictions and </a>requirements before doing so.
Zimbabwe requires all visitors to have a visa to enter the country, and most visitors usually obtain the visa on arrival. The visa costs $55 US Dollars for a <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">Single Entry Visa</a> and $70 US Dollars for a Double Entry Visa.
Visitors should ensure that their passport is valid for at least six months from the date of arrival and has three blank pages left. Returning residents and visitors may be required to complete track and trace information on arrival.
Those transiting through Zimbabwe should check with their airline or travel provider for transit requirements. Journalists intending to engage in <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">journalistic activity</a> must arrange prior accreditation through the Zimbabwean Embassy in London. The Zimbabwean Government uses a broad definition of journalism, which includes any form of interview, filming, or photography.
The UK has an <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">arms embargo</a> against Zimbabwe, and it is illegal to take firearms into the country, even if intending to bring them back to the UK. The UK government further advised:

Zimbabwe is currently experiencing electricity shortages resulting in extended periods without power. UK Government Issues Zimbabwe Travel Advice, Lists Entry Requirements

John McGinn, the captain of Aston Villa Football Club and Scotland national team, has posted on social media stating that he enjoyed a holiday trip in Zimbabwe with his fiancé, Sara Stokes. <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2023/06/27/marvelous-nakamba-invites-aston-villa-teammates-to-visit-zimbabwes-victoria-falls/">They were invited by teammate</a> and Zimbabwe international, Marvelous Nakamba.
The couple took an aerial helicopter ride called the Flight of Angels above Victoria Falls, which is known as Mosi-oa-Tunya (The Smoke that Thunders) by locals.
They also went on a boat cruise and saw a pod of hippos and a crocodile basking in the sun. McGinn even tried dancing to mimic a performer from a local traditional group and jokingly said “they must have no hamstrings.” McGinn shared videos and photos on his Instagram page, describing the experience as “unbelievable.” He said:

Zimbabwean international footballer Marvelous Nakamba, who is in the country for the season break, has invited his Aston Villa teammates to experience Victoria Falls to market Zimbabwe as a tourism destination.
The waterfall is a popular attraction for tourists from all over the world, contributing significantly to Zimbabwe’s gross domestic product. Speaking about the invite to his teammates, Nakamba said:

Nakamba, who has been transfer-listed by Aston Villa, is expected to seal a permanent move to Luton town, where he played a vital role in their promotion to the English Premier League.

Marvelous Nakamba Invites Aston Villa Teammates To Visit Zimbabwe's Victoria Falls

The South African Revenue Services (SARS) recently fixed a technical glitch that had seen transporters of commercial cargo face long delays at the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Beitbridge/">Beitbridge Border Post</a>.
SARS spokesperson, Mr Siphithi Sibeko, yesterday said they were working on ensuring a flawless passage for traffic. He said:

 You will note that we don’t have a major challenge besides the fact that our online system is a little slower.
However, we are working on it and things will get better in the shortest possible time.
</blockquote>
The delays occur a few months after SARS officials went on strike demanding a 12% pay rise, while their employer offered to review salaries by 1.7%, resulting in a stalemate. However, negotiations between the employees and the revenue collector later resolved the matter. 
Slow-moving queues of freight trucks had become a common occurrence on the Zimbabwean side of the border, but following the upgrade of the Beitbridge Border Post, Zimbabwe no longer causes any delays to transporters of commercial cargo. The Zimbabwean side has been clearing an average of 900 trucks daily since the transformation of the border post.
Zimborders Consortium, responsible for managing the facility under a Build Operate Transfer (BOT) concession with the government, aims to clear at least 80% of freight within three hours by the second quarter of next year.

Procedure For Motorists Driving From South Africa To Zimbabwe Through Beitbridge Border

At least 42 British Airways (BA) flights were cancelled due to technical issues leaving thousands of travellers stranded at London Heathrow.
The cancellations resulted from the “knock-on effect of a technical issue” which caused staff to be placed in the wrong location, according to BBC.
Over 16,000 passengers were affected by the cancellations, which mainly impacted flights departing from or arriving at Heathrow. Some passengers have also been unable to check-in online.

On Thursday, BA apologised for cancelling dozens of flights at Heathrow. BA said in a statement on Friday:

While the vast majority of our flights continue to operate today, we have cancelled some of our short-haul flights from Heathrow due to the knock-on effect of a technical issue that we experienced yesterday.

The cancellations occurred on the busiest day for UK air travel since 2019, with more than 3,000 flights planned. This is partly due to families travelling for the half-term break. Affected passengers were the option to rebook an alternative flight or request a refund.
BA has faced IT problems in the past, including a major breakdown in 2017 that left 75,000 passengers stranded over a holiday weekend. The recent incident has led to criticism from customers and pledges from the carrier to improve its services in the future.
The cancellations occurred amidst a three-day strike by security guards at Heathrow Airport over pay, though the airport has stated that its operations will not be affected.

Heathrow Airport: 42 British Airways Flights Cancelled, Thousands Of Travellers Stranded

Eswatini Air on Friday, 14 April began its maiden flight into Zimbabwe, with the jet landing at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport at 11:50 AM.
The Royal Eswatini National Airways Corporation, running Eswatini Air, will fly into Harare four times a week, making it possible for travellers to fly directly between Mbabane and Harare.
The flights will be on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays from King Mswati III International Airport to Harare.
Eswatini Air will operate two 50-seater Embraer ERJ145 aircraft.

Eswatini Air Begins Flights Into Zimbabwe

The Government says the Kariba Airport will be relocated to a new site to accommodate more aircraft and boost tourism in the town.
Speaking at the launch of the Fastjet flights in Kariba last week, Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona said:

Government, through my ministry, identified a new site for the relocation of this airport.
Relocating the airport to a new site will accommodate a wide range of aircraft and promote Kariba as a tourist destination.
… My ministry will continue to support the aviation industry as it is an essential service to the development of the economy through the promotion of trade and tourism.
Aviation contributes to the national gross domestic product and employment creation.

Kariba Tourism and Business Indaba co-ordinator Cephas Shonhiwa said there was a need for the Government to repair the road linking Harare and Kariba which is now in a sorry state.

Kariba Airport Set To Be Relocated

Eurowings Discover Airline has increased flights into Zimbabwe a move that has been described as a major boost for the country’s tourism sector, which is recovering from the impact of COVID-19.
The airline, owned by Lufthansa Group, has resumed services to Victoria Falls and will operate all year round instead of just seasonally. This move is seen as an indication of Zimbabwe’s appeal as a destination and is expected to promote trade and tourism. 
Tourism Business Council of Zimbabwe President Mr Wengai Nhau told Sunday News in an interview that the resumption of flights by Eurowings Discover Airline will make Zimbabwe more competitive as a tourism destination. He is cited as saying:

Any addition into the country is welcome because the more options in terms of air transport into a given destination, the more that destination becomes competitive. Competitiveness, affordability, and quality of accessibility are all enhanced as a result of the additional capacity both on the tourism side and on the trade side.

According to him, the direct year-round connection between Zimbabwe and Germany is significant for economic and diplomatic ties, as well as tourism development and growth. This development will also complement the sector’s post-COVID-19 recovery efforts.
The airline is expected to fly into <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Victoria_Falls">Victoria Falls</a> three times a week via Windhoek and will follow with the Frankfurt-Kilimanjaro-Victoria Falls route in June. The Lufthansa Group Station Manager at Victoria Falls has confirmed the airline will now operate all year round without taking a break for the next two years.
Airport Company of Zimbabwe Public Relations and Communications Manager, Mr Tonderai Mangombe said Eurowings Discover increased flights to Zimbabwe due to the high demand and growing popularity of the destination among tourists.
Zimbabwe’s Open Skies Policy has attracted more international airlines, with over 20 now flying into the country, up from just three when the Second Republic took office in 2017.

Eurowings Discover Airline Has Increased Flights Into Zimbabwe

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Tourism_Authority_(ZTA)">Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA)</a> has said South Africans constitute the majority of tourists who visit Zimbabwe.
ZTA’s head of corporate affairs, Godfrey Chief Koti, spoke to eNCA and said almost 220 000 South African visitors toured Zimbabwe last year alone. He said:

Predominantly, South Africa has always been the highest feeder as far as regional tourism is concerned, into Zimbabwe. It is great to see them again, maintaining that position. This is something that we are definitely monitoring and watching. We are certain that we will be increasing our efforts into South Africa.

Statistics seen by <a href="https://www.iol.co.za/news/south-africa/south-africans-make-up-majority-of-foreign-tourists-streaming-to-zimbabwe-21bc19f8-1b54-40b3-b003-c1636d6122eb">IOL</a> show that the number of South Africans who toured Zimbabwe in 2022 increased by 205 per cent compared to the previous year.
Zimbabwe also recorded a boom in tourists from Botswana, Malawi, Angola, Mozambique and Zambia.
According to the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority’s statistics, South Africans constituted the majority of tourists who visited the country last year. Out of a total of 693 281 tourists who visited Zimbabwe, South Africans were 219 141.
Zimbabwe boasts world-famous attractions dotted across the country, including the breathtaking Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Hwange National Park, Mana Pools National Park, Matobo Hills, the Great Zimbabwe National Monument, and the Eastern Highlands.
In recent years, the government of Zimbabwe has made efforts to revamp and develop the tourism industry through various initiatives such as easing visa requirements for tourists, upgrading tourism infrastructure, and promoting the country’s unique cultural heritage and wildlife.

South Africans Constitute Majority Of Regional Tourists Into Zimbabwe - ZTA

Border agencies at the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Welcome_to_Pindula">Beitbridge</a> Border Post Wednesday said they were ready to handle increased traffic during the Easter Holidays that run from April 7 and April 11.
During holidays, there is usually a lot of traffic at the Beitbridge border due to many people travelling between South Africa and Zimbabwe. This can cause long queues and delays, so it’s important to plan ahead and make sure travel documents are in order.
Authorities say the number of travellers has been averaging 8 000 off-peak and 20 000 at peak since COVID-19 travel restrictions were lifted last year.
Zimborders Consortium chief executive officer, Mr Francois Diedrechsen, said they will use the same systems as those they carried out in December. <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/beitbridge-border-readies-for-easter-traffic/">The Herald</a> quotes him as saying:
<blockquote>
We are ready to enhance a seamless flow of traffic through the port of entry again,” he said.
Basically, we will be running the same programmes we used in December last year and these were effective.
You will note that traffic has been separated and there are now more service points at the border, so we don’t anticipate any challenges.
</blockquote>
He said traffic flow was normal at the moment and they there busy putting the final touches post-construction of all three terminals – for freight, buses and private vehicles and pedestrians.
The freight terminal was completed under Phase One in October 2021, the bus terminal in June last year and the private cars terminal in November last year.
The regional immigration officer in charge of Beitbridge, Mr Joshua Chibundu, said they have adequate manpower to clear traffic at all three terminals at the border during the Easter holidays.
Joshua Chibundu’s advice to travellers:
He warned travellers against the use of third parties to carry out processes with border agencies saying that arrangement can be costly; we don’t have agents. 
People should be cleared physically to avoid inconveniences.
He added that their compliance and enforcement team would be working with other security agents at the border to minimise and combat rent-seeking activities and irregular migration at the border.
The upgrade and modernisation of the Beitbridge Border Post automated most services to minimise the human interface between travellers and border agencies.
Previously, human interface and limited infrastructure were seen as the main causes of long delays during peak periods at the border.
Clearance at the border:
Beitbridge is a border town located in the southern part of Zimbabwe, near the South African border. 
To pass through the Beitbridge border, travellers will need:

1). a valid passport, 
2). possibly a visa, 
3). vehicle documents if driving, 
4). a health certificate if required, 
5). cash or credit card, and 
6). to declare any items they are bringing into the country.

COVID-19 Guide:

i).  Fully vaccinated travellers need to present proof of vaccination on entry to Zimbabwe and on exit. No PCR test is required. “Fully vaccinated” means complete doses of a vaccine, i.e., two doses of a two-dose regiment or a single dose of the Johnson &amp; Johnson vaccine.
ii). Partially vaccinated travellers will need to follow the same rules as unvaccinated travellers (as below).
iii). All partially vaccinated and unvaccinated travellers are required to present a negative PCR COVID-19 Clearance Certificate obtained within 48 hours of boarding.
iv). On departure, a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours is required.
v). Travellers under 12 years old are exempt from vaccination and PCR test requirements.

Beitbridge Border Post Agencies Say They're Ready To Handle Traffic During Easter

A Fastjet plane flying from Harare was forced to abort landing in Bulawayo Tuesday morning due to foggy weather.
The Embraer ERJ145 aircraft, which was due to touch down at 6.50 am, was forced to turn back to Harare.
Explaining the failed landing, Fastjet spokesman Nunurai Ndawana said:

The weather conditions were below the required minimum for a landing.
With safety being our top priority, our standard procedure to divert was put into effect and returned to Harare.
</blockquote>
The aircraft however took off a second time from Harare and landed safely at Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport shortly after 11 am.
The failed landing caused disruption to dozens of passengers and its own flight schedule.
Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport manager Passmore Dewa said he was attending a meeting in Harare, but told ZimLive that the incident was a “normal weather problem”.
Airports in Zimbabwe have had some issues due to outdated infrastructure, limited international flights, lack of investment, security concerns, and flight cancellations by some airlines. 
However, the government is taking steps to improve the situation, including upgrading infrastructure and signing agreements to increase international flights.
According to <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/fastjet-plane-aborts-bulawayo-landing-due-to-bad-weather/">ZimLive,</a> Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Airport in Bulawayo does not have an instrument landing system (ILS) – a navigation tool used by pilots to help guide the plane when landing in low visibility conditions. 
ILS works by sending radio signals to the aircraft, providing both horizontal and vertical guidance to help the pilot align the plane with the runway and control its altitude and descent rate during landing.

This comes a few days after Ethiopian Airways made its first direct flight from Addis Ababa to Harare on Sunday.
Other airlines plying the Harare route are Lufthansa of Germany, RwandaAir, Air Tanzania, Fly Emirates and South African Airways, which also has several direct flights to Harare, Bulawayo and Victoria Falls.

The UK government has voted to ban imports of hunting trophies of endangered animals and yesterday supported the passage of Henry Smith MP’s Private Member’s Bill which delivers this.
Trophy hunting is a form of hunting for sport in which parts of the hunted wild animals are kept and displayed as trophies.
The internationally agreed Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) lists around 6 000 species including lions, elephants, rhinos, and polar bears as endangered.
After the debate, International Biodiversity Minister Trudy Harrison said:

UK ban on imports of hunting trophies is a setback for <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/zim-lobbying-for-the-removal-of-trophy-import-bans/">Zimbabwe which has been lobbying for the removal of the Cecil Act</a> in America which seeks to ban hunting trophies from Africa.
The Cecil Act came to be in 2015 when <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Cecil_The_Lion">Cecil the lion</a> was killed by a US-based dentist who was trophy hunting in Zimbabwe.
The southern African nation has often argued that it was failing to conserve the <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/elephant-crushes-hunter-death/">parks hence the need to allow hunters</a> to shoot some endangered species like elephants and sell some as their population was fast rising.
In 2020, there were plans to <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/zimbabwe-mulling-introducing-birth-control-pills-for-elephants/">introduce birth control measures to address the ballooning elephant population in the country.</a>

UK Votes To Ban Imports Of Hunting Trophies Of Endangered Animals

Fastjet Zimbabwe has received the first of three Embraer 120, 30-seater planes.
The Embraer 120 aircraft will be used to operate domestic flights from Harare to Kariba and Hwange National Park.
Both the Harare to Hwange and Kariba routes are expected to begin on 27 March 2023.
In a statement, fastjet Zimbabwe spokesperson Nunurai Ndawana said:

We are delighted to welcome this aircraft to serve our domestic new routes to Kariba and Hwange National Park.
Air connectivity is a key enabler for tourism development, and we continue to demonstrate our commitment to the development of tourism in Zimbabwe and the region.

Fastjet Receives Embraer 120 Plane For Domestic Flights

Eswatini Air and Zambia Airways have obtained foreign operator permits (FOPs) from the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ).
The permits allow the two airlines to operate passenger and cargo operations in and outbound of Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport in Harare.
In his remarks on the latest development, CAAZ Director General Elijah Chingosho said:

We are excited about the positive prospects for 2023 in line with the national Vision 2030 and guided by the National Development Strategy 1(NDS1) as we implement the government-initiated Open Skies Policy, positioning our economy for more trade, investment and tourism.

He said further details on the commencement date and frequencies of flights will be announced by the respective Airlines in due course.

Eswatini, Zambian Airlines Get Permits To Operate In Zimbabwe

Judith Neilson, an Australian-based businesswoman who was born and raised in Zimbabwe, has donated US$700k to <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Akashinga_Female_Anti-Poaching_Unit">Akashinga Female Anti-poaching Unit</a>.
Akashinga, “The Brave Ones,” is an exclusively female anti-poaching unit operating in the Zambezi Valley.
The grouping has reportedly managed to reduce cases of poaching by 80% in the Zambezi basin.
Judith Neilson said Akashinga’s strong focus on supporting marginalised women in rural areas, hand in hand with delivering infrastructure upgrades for healthcare, education, and clean water is vital for community-led conservation having an impact at scale. She said:

The women of Akashinga have proven this and I am excited to be supporting them as they expand their work in Africa.
</blockquote>
According to International Anti-Poaching Foundation (IAPF), the grant will be used to recruit more women as wildlife rangers to defend the expanding wilderness portfolio under Akashinga’s mandate.
It will also be used to develop community-based infrastructure.
The group is made up of:

i). single mothers, 
ii). abandoned wives, 
iii). survivors of gender-based violence and 
iv). school dropouts 
</blockquote>
They all undergo intensive ranger training.
Originally, the group had 16 members and these have made waves across Africa for their less confrontational approach to ending poaching.
Said IAPF in a statement:

IAPF announced it has been awarded a US$700,000 (A$1 million) grant from the Judith Neilson Foundation, which will be used to strengthen its ‘Akashinga – Nature Protected by Women’ programme in Zimbabwe.
The programme, which has been a catalyst for change across the region, focuses on social impact to achieve conservation at scale, with the empowerment of women central to its strategy.
The grant will be used to recruit additional women as wildlife rangers to defend the expanding wilderness portfolio under Akashinga’s mandate, including one of the largest remaining elephant populations on earth in Zimbabwe’s Zambezi Valley, and to develop community-based infrastructure. These projects are in partnership with local communities, where the women recruited for service reside.

Akashinga was formed by a former member of the Australian Army’s Special Operations unit Damien Mander who is also IAPF Chief Executive Officer (CEO), in 2009 after three years of service in Iraq.
Now with over 500 members, the programme has been expanded beyond Zimbabwe to protect other poaching-prone areas on the African continent.

Australian-based Businesswoman Has Donated US$700k To Akashinga

Eswatini Airways has announced that it got approval to operate the Zimbabwean route starting from the end of March 2023.
In a statement seen by Pindula News, the airline said it will also ply South African routes. Reads the statement issued on the 9th of February 2023:

Matsapha, Kingdom of Eswatini: Royal Eswatini National Airways Corporation (RENAC) would like to update stakeholders and the general public on the latest developments about Eswatini Air taking to the skies.
Since the approval of our Air Operator Certificate (AOC), several preparatory and post-AOC actions have been initiated. We have made tremendous progress in securing the necessary documentation to operate to the different destinations we will be flying to.
So far, we have received our Foreign Operator Permit (FOP) for Zimbabwe and the FOP for South Africa is in the process. We expect to have everything regarding that smoothed out very soon.
RENAC has also been assigned airline codes by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The assigned IATA 2 letter code is RNwhile the IATA 3 digit accounting prefix is 507.
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has also assigned codes used for airline identification when operating international flights. These codes are used for facilitating communication between the airline and Air Navigation Services Providers or Airspace Management agencies. The two codes applicable are SZL as the 3 letter designator, and Eswatini is the Telephony designator.
Following that, we applied for landing and departure slots at OR Tambo International, King Shaka International, Cape Town International in South Africa and at Robert Gabriel Mugabe (Harare) International Airport in Zimbabwe.
As soon as these outstanding matters are cleared, our systems will be updated and we will publish our schedules and pricing to allow us to commence trading and flying passengers to the different destinations.
At the present moment, we can’t set a definite date for our maiden flight as the turnaround time for the outstanding process is dependent on various factors beyond our control. We, however, envisage taking to the skies at the beginning of the next IATAseason, which is 26 March 2023.
Due to the work that still needs to happen in the background to ensure we operate at our optimum best, we have seen it fit to break our launch into three phases. We envisage starting with one destination and the two others will be added after an interim period of less than one month, with phase III whereby we add the fourth destination being the final stage. The exact dates for each phase and sequence of destinations will be announced as soon as the outstanding processes have been finalised.
While we finalise the processes, we have embarked on the recruitment of required personnel and training is underway for them to be ready by the launch date.

A Kenyan Airways (KQ) aircraft reportedly developed a technical fault at <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Victoria_Falls">Victora Falls</a> International Airport on Wednesday afternoon resulting in close to 100 passengers en route to Cape Town sleeping over in Victoria Falls.
The airline dispatched a spare part from Kenya via another aircraft that was going to Malawi which landed in Victoria Falls to deliver it and departed with passengers who were travelling from Victoria Falls to Nairobi.
According to the Chronicle, those who were travelling to Cape Town were booked at a local hotel together with the airline crew as engineers attended to the fault.
The publication further states that the fault was finally attended to and the aircraft was expected to fly off to Cape Town on Thursday afternoon.
The airline’s staff on the ground confirmed that the fault had been fixed and the passengers were already aboard waiting for departure.

Kenyan Airways Aircraft Fails To Take Off From Victoria Falls Airport

Air Zimbabwe is promoting more domestic routes as it seeks to expand its operations, the airline’s spokesperson, Firstme Vitori, has said.
The airline, which currently uses a Boeing 737-200 and ERJ145 on its domestic and regional routes, is expected to take delivery of a second Embraer (ERJ145) soon.
Key to Air Zimbabwe’s six-year strategic turnaround plan (STP) is the procurement and deployment of appropriate equipment for the current and planned route network, as well as a fleet commonality for the containment of maintenance and operational costs.
Vitori said the easing of travel restrictions by the government last year resulted in a significant increase in load factors to an average of around 55%, combining the B737 with ERJ145 aircraft. Said Vitori:

The deluge of corporate, and social conferences and events in Bulawayo and Victoria Falls saw us operating a lot of commercial charter flights with both aircraft.
During the peak season, we also added frequencies to our domestic routes up to two flights a day.

She said regionally, Air Zimbabwe services Johannesburg, South Africa, with flights every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday.
Air Zimbabwe flights to Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, are available every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Said Vitori:

Air Zimbabwe Plans To Expand Domestic Routes

A section of Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road will be temporarily closed in Hwange to allow for the construction of a crossing pipeline by Afcons Vijeta-JV on behalf of the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC).
In a statement seen by the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/bulawayo-vic-falls-road-closed/">Chronicle</a>, Afcons Vijeta-JV and ZPC said the construction work will include the deployment of heavy machinery between the 337km and 338.5km pegs in Hwange. Read the notice:

The public and motorists are advised to be extremely cautious as Afcons Vijeta-JV will be executing construction works on behalf of the Zimbabwe Power Company for crossing the pipeline, which essentially includes deployment of heavy machinery at Chainage 337 to 338.5 in Hwange. Motorists are also urged to observe speed limit signs as they approach the construction site at the highway and follow direction signs to the detour provided.

Motorists have been requested to fully cooperate with flagmen deployed at the site for smooth movement of traffic.
Afcons Vijeta-JV, an Indian consortium, was awarded the contract to rebuild the Deka pump station and build the 42 km pipeline that will transport water from the Zambezi river to the Hwange power plant.

Section Of Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road To Be Temporarily Closed

The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) has put down an elephant that was destroying crops and fruit trees in the Mkhosana and Mfelandawonye suburbs of Victoria Falls.
Over the weekend, Zimparks rangers reacted to a distress call by the community and put down the lone elephant.
A resident told ZBC News that the elephant was destroying gardens, fields, orchards and perimeter fences. Said the resident:

We are grateful to Zimparks for listening to our plight and the patrols they are making in our areas. Let them continue and increase such.
We are very happy, the elephant was a real problem and it was destroying our fruit trees, mangoes and paw paws and others.
We had resorted to putting elephant dung on our crops to scare them away.

A commentator on wildlife issues Bulisani Mathe gave an insight into circumstances that warrant an animal to be put down. Mathe said:

It is not in the best interest of conservationists to put down wild animals, but there are times when it has to happen. 
When a wild animal becomes a threat to human life and property and when it’s injured beyond recovery through human intervention such as snares, it has to be put down before it kills people or damages more property.

Cases of human-wildlife conflict have been on the rise in Zimbabwe over the past few years as animals frequent human settlements in search of food and water.
In 2022, about four people were trampled to death by elephants in Victoria Falls.

Zimparks Rangers Put Down Problem Elephant In Victoria Falls

Zimbabwe received approximately US$600 million from the tourism sector in 2022 as the sector is regaining momentum following disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. 
The southern African nation recorded a 96 per cent increase in domestic entries into national parks, <a href="https://www.sundaynews.co.zw/tourism-rakes-in-us600m/?_ga=2.146725303.2096150680.1673063471-787432666.1667110700">The Sunday News</a> reported citing Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) head of corporate affairs Godfrey Koti. In a podcast last week, Koti said:

In addition, overseas arrivals increased by 256 percent and there was a 130 percent increase in visitors from Africa. As a result, destination Zimbabwe received approximately US$600 million compared to US$244 million in the same period the 2021 while US$300 million was poured in on investment.

Koti said the tourism industry experienced a boom following the opening up of global markets and relaxed travel restrictions owing to reduced Covid-19 pandemic infections.
In the same podcast, Tourism Business Council of Zimbabwe (TBCZ) president Mr Wengayi Nhau said the festive season was one of the best in the last three years primarily because business seemed to have returned to the old good days.
 He said of key interest was the domestic tourism numbers that continue to grow showing the importance of the local market.
Nhau commended regional and international tourists that were also coming into the country after a long period and also urged Zimbabweans in the diaspora to tap into the markets.
According to the ZTA report released in December 2022 that presented the January to September performance highlights in 2022, the country witnessed an increase of 165 per cent tourist arrivals.
A notable increase was expected in arrivals from the fourth quarter since August which marked the beginning of the peak season for tourism.
Meanwhile, presenting the 2023 National Budget Statement last year in November, Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube said Zimbabwe received US$337.5 million during the first half of 2022, an increase of 121 per cent compared to the same period in 2021.
He projected 2023 tourism receipts at US$623 million.

Zimbabwe Receives US$600 Million From Tourism In 2022

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/ZINARA">Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA)</a> has announced the closure of two tollgates to pave way for scheduled rehabilitation. 
In a notice seen by Pindula News, ZINARA said the two tollgates, one situated 9km west of <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Triangle">Triangle</a> on the Ngundu-Tanganda Road and the other 17.5km from <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Chivhu">Chivhu</a> on the Chivhu-Nyazura Road stopped operating on Saturday, 31 December 2022. Said ZINARA:

The Zimbabwe National Road Administration would like to advise the motoring public that the Triangle and Magamba tollgates have been suspended with effect from 31st December 2022 in terms of Statutory Instrument 219 of 2022. The suspension of operations at these tollgates is part of our continuous operational review. Zinara takes this opportunity to thank the motoring public for their continued cooperation.

ZINARA said five other tollgates on the outskirts of cities and towns are set to be moved further out as the expanding urban areas lap around them. 
This will make them once again highway tollgates and ease the financial burden on motorists living in peri-urban areas who were paying road tolls twice daily on their way to and from work.

Towards the end of December, the <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/govt-says-22-toll-gates-to-be-upgraded-to-toll-plazas/">government started constructing toll plazas</a> along the country’s major highways, according to senior officials.
There are 33 toll gates countrywide and at least two-thirds of the toll gates will be upgraded to toll plazas, officials said. 
In May last year, ZINARA said it was making headway on plans to establish an e-tolling system to reduce operating costs from toll fee collection. 
The system will allow motorists to pay upfront and then just drive, without stopping at tollgates while the fees are automatically deducted as they drive through. This is now common in many countries.
Toll fee collections totalled $1.2 billion in 2020, 556 per cent higher than the $183 million realised in 2019.

FULL LIST: ZINARA Closes Some Toll Gates For Upgrade, Relocates Some

Zimbabweans working in South Africa and returning home for Christmas with family and friends have said “money speaks at <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Beitbridge">Beitbridge</a> border post” if they don’t meet some requirements.
Returnees who spoke to the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/scams-at-beitbridge-border-post/">Chronicle</a> on condition of anonymity said those who were not willing to be tested for COVID-19 stashed money in their passports on arrival at the Zimbabwean side of the border and officers stamped the passports.
This way, travellers avoid lining up for their health status to be checked.

These reports come when there is <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/hospitals-full-as-china-battles-with-new-covid-wave/">a resurgence of COVID-19 in some countries.</a>
The Minister of Local Government and Public Works, July Moyo, recently urged Zimbabweans to exercise extreme caution in their contacts with diasporans coming home during the current festive season, and those visiting other countries in our region to protect themselves from contracting COVID-19.
Zimbabwe national police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) was taking the reports of evading COVID-19 screening seriously adding, “we are investigating the matter.”
Another returnee said that Zimbabweans entering South Africa through Beitbridge without permits simply place the amount of money demanded by immigration authorities and are allowed to proceed “without much further ado”.
The Chronicle also reported that the case was the same if a foreigner was stopped inside South Africa without possessing valid work permits – money was paid to bribe officials. 
It is not the first time reports of corruption at the Beitbridge Border Post have been reported. 
Several Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) officials were busted over the years for engaging in underhand dealings that have seen them amassing wealth at the expense of the whole nation.
