Leonard Mapfumo

Leonard Mapfumo is a popular Zimbabwean Urban Grooves artist. Mapfumo is one of the pioneers of the genre who rose to prominence in the early 2000s with his hit 'Seiko' which topped the local charts. The song which featured talented vocalist Roki and propelled him to national stardom.

Personal Life

Mapfumo was born on the 30 January 1983 in Harare. He grew up in the city where he would do his primary education at Kudzanai Primary School and his secondary at Mount Pleasant High School.

Music Career

Mapfumo's interest in music started playing at Primary school while he was doing his fifth grade. It was here that he started writing his own lyrics. Since then his passion caused him to pursue music even after he graduated from high school in 2000. Like any other parents, Mapfumo's mother was disappointed as she had wanted him to go to university. He however remained resilient and was eventually signed with Galaxy Entertainment [1] which was owned by Delani Makhalima. Under the record label Mapfumo was to become a household name after the release of 'Seiko'. The label helped with marketing and distribution of his music for my songs. From there on he went to release a string of hits such as 'Maidei', 'Chiuya' and 'Two chete'. The former was so popular that it reached number one on national charts, staying there for 42 weeks.[2] He has produced four albums to date.


In 2007 he opened his recording studio 'Heshi Mfeshi'. Through this initiative he started grooming several artistes. He even took some time before releasing anything new just to write and record other artists. He is credited for identifying artists like Shinsoman, Yaka and Yoz.[3]


Mapfumo has performed in many different african countries. In December 2012, he together with Trevor Dongo and Maskiri embarked on his maiden United Kingdom tour.
