Peter Moyo is the son of the legendary Sungura musician Tongai Moyo, who took over the reigns of Utakataka Express after the death of his father in 2011. The young crooner, who was once accused of singing discord as he started off, went on to receive vocal lessons from gospel singer Charles Charamba[1], before releasing his debut album which was well received.

Music Career

Peter who only started singing after his father became ill, faced many a rough patch as he tried but his vocals were very bad with some accusing him of singing discord. Nevertheless the ambitious artist, in the weeks before his father's death led the band on a tour of Botswana when Tongai Moyo was hospitalised for a brain tumour at Annes Hospital.[2] After his father's death, Peter who showed his eagerness to learn took over. Within a few weeks he was able to play the rhythm and lead guitars. He shared the stage with the likes of Oliver Mtukudzi and Alick Macheso singing his fathers songs on many occasions. It was not until June 2013 when the 'young igwe' stepped out of his father's shadow by releasing his debut album 'Mushonga Mukuru' which was auctioned at US$500.[3] The album carried tracks like 'Mira newako' and Tsonzo will received favourable airplay.

Hard Times

The young Igwe as Peter is affectionately known went through a rough patch as he tried to maintain his father's legacy. In 2013 he lost key band members, Spencer Khumulani, Gift “Shiga Shiga” Katulika and Gaison Sixpense. The foursome deserted Moyo and went n to flamboyant Energy Mutodi's band forcing Peter to start afresh. It was alleged the band members left him because of a financial crisis that had hit it. The band members were allegedly receiving as little as US$20.[4]To add salt to injury, his new-look band was involved in an accident while returning from a music gala a few months down the line. Most of the band members were injured and this threatened the collapse of the once revered Utakataka Express.[5]

Big Headedness

Peter spoiled his album launch after he attached his step mother saying she was no longer part of the Moyo family. Not only did he denounce his mother in front of government ministers, music promoters and fellow musicians but Peter went further to say his step mum was free to fall in love with anyone- a taboo in our culture.[6] There had been an outcry by promoters who are saying Peter is becoming too big for his shoes. Only three years in the music industry, he had courted controversy many times. At one point failed to turn up for a show where he was supposed to share the stage with Tryson Chimbetu in Bulawayo. There was commotion as fans were not refunded.[7]

He was again caught offside when he denounced all his fathers friends saying that they were not his. When, Jah Prayzah, was given a car by Tongai Moyo's friend Esau Mupfumi, it was therefore generally believed that Peter was snubbed. Some promoters even lashed out at him saying he was misguided.[8] On 25 January at a joint family show that was held in Westlea, Peter fumed that his late father's close friends were not his friends per se but were just his associates.[9] He gave all the kudos to Suluman Chimbetu stating that he has been the only person who has managed to stick to his promises.[9]
