  • 17 February 1957: Popular Zimbabwean Sungura and reggae artist, John Chibadura, real name John Nyamukokoko, is born. Chibadura, with his band, the Tembo Brothers, became a music industry success both in the country and the region.

  • 17 February 1979: Cara Black, one of the most outstanding female tennis players to emerge out of Zimbabwe, and sister to two of celebrated tennis players, Wayne Black and Byron Black, is born.
  • 17 February 1982: Robert Mugabe fires Joshua Nkomo from government accusing him of plotting a coup against Zimbabwe.
  • 17 February 1998: Econet as part of a consortium, is awarded a telecommunications license in Botswana and would later go on to form Mascom.
