Journalist Hopewell Chin’ono has castigated the ZANU PF-led Government for using the police to ban CCC rallies across the country.
Chin’ono also criticised CCC leader Nelson Chamisa saying his decision to “get rid” of senior opposition figures such as Tendai Biti and Welshman Ncube has weakened the opposition party.
On Monday, police in Gokwe South District banned a CCC rally that was scheduled to take place at Nyaradza Grounds on 13 July 2023. Said Chin’ono:

In the afternoon (Monday) I said that the police memo instructing police commanders to allow opposition rallies was just meant to appease the African ambassadors and Election Observers who have been pushing Mnangagwa’s regime to be fair to the opposition by not banning its rallies.
Hardly 5 hours after saying that, another opposition rally has been banned again today! This election is a charade and its outcome is predetermined.
I wish the opposition leadership was stronger as it was in 2008 when Tsvangirai had real opposition generals around him.
The truth is that Nelson Chamisa has surrounded himself with lightweights after getting rid of people like Biti and Prof Ncube for whatever reason!
Who does he send to Pretoria, or Addis Ababa or Gaborone at SADC? ZANU PF has no reason to be fair, it will never be fair.
It is the opposition that needed to be stronger and confront this regime as happened in 2008!

Biti, who was the Minister of Finance in the Government of National Unity (GNU), was controversially sidelined in his bid to represent the CCC in Harare East in the upcoming general elections. 
Harare North MP, Allan Markham,  whose constituency was disbanded by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, was selected to represent Harare East. 
Chin’ono also criticised ZANU PF for allegedly denying opposition political parties access to public media.
Ironically, CCC leader Nelson Chamisa’s rally in South Africa on Saturday, 24 June was broadcast live by the neighbouring country’s broadcaster SABC News, something he is denied back home by the national broadcaster ZBCtv.
Posting on Twitter, Chin’ono said denying opposition political parties access to public media is against the law. He said:

Over and above denying the opposition the right to have rallies, the ZANU PF regime is also denying them access to ZBC and other public media like Herald which is against the law.
The regime is even denying Winky D access to have his songs played and even to mention his name! Pathetic!
</blockquote>
Responding to Chin’ono, the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Nick Mangwana, said CCC is free “to come” to ZBC and The Herald as long as they pay. He said;

They can come to the ZBC anytime. They can come to the Herald anytime. They can even place adverts in both. Mari yavo chete.
</blockquote>
Through a leaked memo, Police General Headquarters (PGHQ) ordered provincial commanders to approve opposition political rallies unless there are compelling reasons.
In the memo dated 08 July 2023, officers commanding provinces, the support unit, and police intelligence were advised not to block political parties as it discredited the electoral processes.

Chamisa Partly To Blame For "Weak" Opposition, Says Chin'ono

Self-exiled former ZANU PF politburo member Jonathan Moyo has said the opposition CCC is not prepared for the upcoming general elections and will lose dismally.
Moyo said this while commenting on the results of a recent survey by Afrobarometer and the Mass Public Opinion Institute (MPOI) which showed that CCC leader Nelson Chamisa’s support has fallen by 6% since June 2022.
The former Information Minister who is widely believed to be in Kenya, said CCC’s lack of structures, office bearers and policies will cost it dearly in the general elections. Said Moyo:

The widely reported Afrobarometer findings which have rattled CCC confirm a fact whose writing has been on the wall since the March 2022 by-elections when Advocate Nelson Chamisa decided to establish CCC in his own personal image with no constitution, no structures, no office bearers and no policies. To this day, with the general election set for 23 August 2023, CCC has not been formally launched.
It is no wonder that, as things stand, CCC is the weakest pre-election [main] opposition party since the emergence of the MDC in 1999 ahead of the 2000 parliamentary election.
CCC’s structural weaknesses as a political party played out in full public view during its disastrous candidate selection process and at the Nomination Court when, due to self-evident disorganisation arising from its lack of structures, the party had triple and double candidates; it failed to submit its 10 partylist candidates for the Bulawayo metropolitan province; and all of its 12 National Assembly constituency candidates submitted their nomination papers late in controversial and illegal circumstances after 4 pm on 21 June 2023, when the Nomination Court [which had started receiving nomination papers on 10 June 2023] had closed its doors by law.
As if to dramatise the unprecedented disorganisation of the CCC, one of the candidates, [Gift Siziba] 
– who is a leading runner for Advocate Chamisa – shockingly submitted his nomination paper at 1:00 am on 22 June 2023, which was not the prescribed nomination court day.
With 43 days to go before polling day, time is running out for Chamisa’s CCC.
Given the party’s messy candidate selection process and the Nomination Court debacle in Bulawayo set to be heard in the Bulawayo High Court on 19 July 2023, and the negative Afrobarometer findings, it is going to be a hard ask and a tall order for CCC to turn its fortunes around by 23 August 2023!

Moyo has been a vocal critic of Chamisa and CCC since he fell out with the MDC Alliance, CCC’s forerunner, a few years ago.

Zimbabwe's Opposition At Its Weakest Since 1999, Says Jonathan Moyo

CCC member David Coltart has rejected claims by some political commentators that party leader Nelson Chamisa “has a mountain to climb” to win the presidential race based on the results of the recent Afrobarometer survey.
The Afrobarometer and Mass Public Opinion Institute recently released pre-election survey findings indicating a decline in support for the CCC and a surge in support for ZANU PF.
According to the report, 27% of respondents said they will vote for Chamisa, a decrease of 6% since June 2022, and 35% said they will vote for President Emmerson Mnangagwa, a 5%.
Posting on Twitter, Coltart argued that the most important finding is that 85% are unhappy with the current state of affairs in the country. <a href="https://twitter.com/DavidColtart/status/1678694469724516353?s=20">He wrote</a>:
<blockquote>
I fundamentally disagree with Afrobarometer commentators who say that [Nelson Chamisa] has a mountain to climb. I believe the following slide is the key – namely that 27% “refuse to answer”.
In a country where 85% have said the government is “performing badly” as revealed in another section of the poll, in a country where there has been a long history of political violence – decades-long- supported by another poll question where 6 in 10 people “fear political violence” – these 27% are not swing voters in the usual sense but voters who “refused to answer”.
Swing voters are those “who don’t know”. People who support ZANU PF have nothing to fear &amp; that is why they are happy to reveal their voting intentions.
I agree that CCC and Chamisa can’t just take for granted that the 27% “refusenics” will vote for them they may vote for CCC or some other party or candidate.
The one thing one can be sure about is that they certainly won’t vote for ZANU PF. So my reading is that it is Mnangagwa and ZANU PF who have a mountain to climb, not CCC and Nelson Chamisa.
One final point – some of the 35% who say they will vote for Mnangagwa &amp; ZANU PF – may themselves be so fearful that they have stated that they will vote for ZANU PF and Mnangagwa rather than record a “refusal”.
The most important finding is that 85% are unhappy.

Zimbabweans go to the poll on 23 August 2023 to elect the president, members of parliament and councillors who will serve for the next five years.
However, the run-up to the elections has been marred by the Zimbabwe Republic Police’s refusal to allow CCC to campaign, a development that will most likely result in a disputed poll outcome.

Coltart Says Afrobarometer Survey Shows Mnangagwa "Has A Mountain To Climb"

University of Zimbabwe (UZ) political science lecturer, Eldred Masunungure, said that President Emmerson Mnangagwa has been canvassing political support in the church to prolong its stay at State House.
Unnamed senior ZANU PF officials recently told The NewsHawks that Mnangagwa and the First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa have decided to harvest support in churches following an Afrobarometer survey report released in June this year.
The Afrobarometer report indicated a rise in the popularity of CCC leader Nelson Chamisa against waning support for Mnangagwa.
The key finding of the survey was that if elections were held at that juncture, 33% of the respondents were going to vote for Chamisa while 30% would vote for Mnangagwa.
Speaking to The NewsHawks, Masunungure said the First Family is now frequenting churches not for the love of Jesus but for love of power. He said:
<blockquote>
This goes to show the enormous and increasing power of the religious factor, particularly the indigenous African churches as well as the Pentecostals.
Remember, according to the recent Afrobarometer survey (March-April 2022), 90% of Zimbabweans declared that they are Christians.
This is coupled with the fact that religious leaders are by far the most trusted among public figures, with 71% of adult citizens saying they trust them compared to the next most trusted institutions, traditional leaders who attract 58% trust levels.
In short, the first family – President and First Lady – have their fingers on the pulse.
But, let’s be clear: it’s not for the love of Jesus or the Bible but for love of power that proximity to religious figures yields.
Also note that traditional leaders have long been targeted and are now in the fold, and so are many other socio-political demographic groups.
This is all part of a total strategy that leaves no stone unturned on the road to retaining State House.
</blockquote>
Masunungure added that Mnangagwa’s strategy to lure churches could garner votes for him in next year’s elections. He said:
<blockquote>
The chances are extremely high, especially in respect of the above religious movements – indigenous and pentecostal– where often the word of the bishop is taken as a directive to the congregants and there is little to no room for dissenting voices and defiant actions.
</blockquote>
ZANU PF officials including Mnangagwa, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga and the First Lady have been frequenting countless churches.
On 16 July, Mnangagwa was in Mafararikwa at St Noah where he attended the Passover Service of the Johanne Marange Apostolic Church.
That same day, the First Lady and Information minister Monica Mutsvangwa were in Mutare, attending an Apostolic Ejuweni Jekenisheni church service.
On 2 July, Chiwenga was at the Catholic-run Monte Cassino Girls High School in Macheke.
On 7 August, Mnangagwa attended a service at Zion Christian Church at Defe Dopota. He was accompanied by the First Lady.

An Afrobarometer survey report released in June this year has reportedly pushed ZANU PF and President Emmerson Mnangagwa to canvass political support in churches.
The Afrobarometer survey report indicated that CCC leader Nelson Chamisa’s popularity was rising while Mnangagwa had lost considerable support since the 2017 military coup that brought him to State House.
The key finding of the survey was that if elections were held at that juncture, 33% of the respondents were going to vote for Chamisa while 30% would vote for Mnangagwa.
A ZANU PF insider who spoke to The NewsHawks said the Afrobarometer survey report unsettled the party’s bigwigs. Said the official:
<blockquote>
Number one (Mnangagwa) and other party leaders at our Harare headquarters where most of them are working full-time were particularly unsettled because in 2017 the same survey projected ED’s support at 38% and so coming down to 30% was a cause of concern for them. It was decided that the party harvest support in churches.

Another ZANU PF insider was quoted as saying that the party was deliberately targetting churches to boost its support. The official said:
<blockquote>
It is not accidental that you see party leaders and government officials flocking to churches with huge followers to address them.
It’s part of a planned move in response to the Afrobarometer survey. The party now believes that it can regroup and bolster its support by wooing churches.
Our leader (Mnangagwa) himself is not a staunch Christian but he has been going to these churches and putting on different robes.
</blockquote>

ZANU PF Jolted Into Going To Church By Afrobarometer Report

Fifty-one (51) per cent of Zimbabweans still trust President Emmerson Mnangagwa to lead the country despite expressing unhappiness about the ailing economy, an Afrobarometer round 9 survey has established.
This was revealed during a Mass Public Opinion Institute (MPOI) meeting in Bulawayo on Tuesday.
The survey principal Stephen Ndoma said he used a sample size of 1 200 citizens, adding that his study had an error rate of +/-3 percentage points at a 95% confidence level. Said Ndoma:
<blockquote>
The majority (64%) being those with primary or no formal education followed by 58% of those of no or low lived poverty and the least is those living in high poverty who constitute 40% said they trust the President, but 42% of those living in the urban areas say they do not trust the President.
</blockquote>
The findings of the survey were carried out from 2017 to 2022.
Ndoma said 94% of people in Harare and 82% in Bulawayo, Matabeleland North and South were not happy with the state of the economy.
They said the Government was performing “fairly bad” or “very bad” on key economic issues.
87% of the respondents said the government was failing to keep prices stable, 86% said the Government was failing to create jobs while 79% said authorities had failed to narrow the gap between the rich and poor.
Almost three-quarters (72%) of citizens said the country was going in the wrong direction, according to the survey. Said Ndoma:

Nearly eight in 10 citizens (78%) say the country’s economic condition is either ‘fairly bad’ or ‘very bad’, while 64% describe their living conditions in the same way.

_The 2nd is self-inflicted: corruption. The survey showed that more people think that resources meant to fight COVID-19 were looted by corrupt politicians. This falls into the wider vice that has afflicted this regime which has earned a reputation of corruption._
_Unfortunately, the survey did not enquire into public attitudes about the opposition and its response to the pandemic. The pandemic has been hard for opposition parties. They could not be seen opposing lockdowns when there was an existential threat._
_But some opposition parties have been creative and have found a rich seam where ruling parties have bungled their handling of the pandemic, the cronyism &amp; corruption, &amp; generally holding government to account. The Zimbabwean opposition could draw lessons from that._</blockquote>

MDC Alliance Should Not Ignore Afrobarometer Findings - Magaisa

Afrobarometer’s 8th round of surveys on public attitudes regarding democracy and governance conducted in Zimbabwe suggests that two-thirds of participants in the survey believe that the country is going in the wrong direction.
The research network says seventy-two per cent (72%) describe the economic situation as bad while sixty-two per cent (62%) of Zimbabweans say their personal living conditions are bad.
Only thirty-five per cent (35%) were optimistic that the country would be better in 12 months, which leaves nearly two-thirds of the population in the hopeless category.
Overall, participants rated government performance as bad with job creation topping the list of underperformances at 91% followed by failure to maintain price stability supported by 78% of the people.
69% do not think the government is managing the economy well while 77% say the government is failing to address the needs of young people.
Alex Tawanda Magaisa argues that these statistics demonstrate the dire social and economic situation in the country and the lack of confidence in the current government.
He further opines that most Zimbabweans expected President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who rose to power in November 2017 through a military assisted transition, to turn around the country’s fortunes.
Magaisa, a former chief of staff in the office of the late former Prime Minister, Morgan Tsvangirai, also believes that a low rating by 72% “is a vote of no confidence in the regime.” He added:
<blockquote>_The bleak public opinion is backed by indicators relating to the levels of poverty in the country. Afrobarometer found that 87% of the people went without cash income several times or always over the previous 12 months. People in the rural areas were the most affected with 91% saying they had experienced this problem while 79% of urban residents were impacted. A lot of citizens complained of severe shortages of basic commodities and services. For example, 52% went without food several times over the past year while 51% complained of a shortage of clean water. Most of those who complained of lack of clean water were urban residents (62%). 55% had gone without medical care several times._</blockquote>
Magaisa also said although the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the problem, the lack of cash income reflects an ongoing problem that existed long before the current challenges.
He strongly believes that the higher levels of poverty make the population more vulnerable to political opportunists adding that the ruling party has for years weaponized poverty as an electioneering tool.

Two-Thirds Say Zimbabwe Is Going In Wrong Direction - Afrobarometer

A survey by Afrobarometer revealed that 25 per cent of African women consider being beaten up by their husbands a normal and acceptable form of punishment.
In some countries, 70 per cent of women tolerate violence. The report reads in part:
<blockquote>Acceptance of violence against women is particularly widespread in Central and West Africa and among respondents with no formal education.
Tolerance for violence against women is far higher in some countries, reaching seven in 10 citizens in Gabon (70%) and Liberia (69%).</blockquote>
The survey also found out that men with no formal education (41%) are significantly more likely to endorse wife-beating than those with primary, secondary, or post-secondary education.
However, 71 per cent of Africans say it is never justified for a man to beat his wife.

African Women Consider Being Beaten Up By Their Husbands 'Normal'

The latest Mass Public Opinion Institute (MPOI) survey says that if elections are to be held today, a run-off will be necessary as the two leading candidates will not garner sufficient votes to win an outrun majority.  President Emmerson Mnangagwa is projected to win 42 percent of the vote while Nelson Chamisa is projected to win 31 percent which is short of the 50 percent + 1 needed to win the presidential election.
MPOI principal researcher, Stephen Ndoma said,
<blockquote>We asked our respondents if presidential elections were held tomorrow (during the survey last month), which presidential candidate from which political party they would vote for and 42% said they would vote for Zanu PF, compared to the 31% for the MDC-T, combined party and alliance…More than 77% of Zimbabweans said they will definitely vote in this year’s election, 9% said they will probably vote, while 5% said they may or may not vote.</blockquote>
25 percent of the people refused to reveal their preferences or are still undecided.

Presidential Election Is Heading For Run-Off: Afrobarometer Survey

A report conducted by the Mass Public Opinion Institute (MPOI) on behalf of Afrobarometer early this year, has revealed that 78 percent of Zimbabweans are terrified of criticising President Robert Mugabe. Despite their fear, however, or perhaps because of it, most of the survey respondents said they thought that Mugabe was doing a good job.
Part of the report reads:
<blockquote>A majority of Zimbabweans (78%) are not very/at all free to criticise President Robert Mugabe. Midlands province has the highest proportion of residents (78%), while Mashonaland West province has the least proportion (41%) of residents who are ‘not at all’ feel free to criticise the President,</blockquote>
The report also noted that Zanu PF still commanded large support in the rural areas.

Pan African research group, Afrobarometer has said that 64% of adult Zimbabweans trust President Robert Mugabe while 34% distrust the opposition.
Afrobarometer almost registered the same results a few years ago. There are about 7.7 million adults in Zimbabwe with a population of over 13 million. Part of the report reads:
<blockquote>There is more trust in the president in rural areas (69%) than urban centres (55%) claiming that they “somewhat” or “a lot” (trust the president). It is also important to note that the public trust the president (64%) more than they do the ruling party, Zanu-PF (56%).</blockquote>
50% of adult Zimbabweans said they trust the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC). Masvingo province has the highest proportion of adult Zimbabweans (67%) who claim that they trust it “somewhat” or quite “a lot” with Bulawayo province having the least trust (28%). Three quarters of adult Zimbabweans trust religious leaders and non-governmental organisations. Afrobarometer reports that the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority and opposition political parties are the least trusted.
