Agricultural extension officers around the country have threatened to go on a strike after the government failed to give them COVID-19 risk allowances.
NewsDay reported sources saying the extension workers alleged that even though they risked their lives in educating peasant farmers about Pfumvudza at the height of the coronavirus outbreak, they got nothing while office workers were paid over $20 000 as COVID-19 risk allowances. A source is quoted as having said:
<blockquote>We risked our families by hosting these agricultural demonstrations with farmers when the country was on level five lockdown, but the government chose to pay those who were in offices COVID-19 risk allowances including those in the human resources department and general hands.
This government has reduced us to farm workers. We do all the donkey work, for example, crop and livestock assessment but we are not paid anything.
Is this government different from the government that runs hospitals whereby staff is paid handsomely for just collecting information just like us?
They are now focusing on advertising Pfumvudza on every platform, but they are forgetting those who implemented and made the Pfumvudza programme a success.
With no PEPs and other protective clothing, we managed to train farmers countrywide.</blockquote>
The permanent secretary for the Agriculture, Lands, Water and Rural Resettlement ministry John Bhasera confirmed the matter, but refused to comment and referred questions to the Public Service Commission.

Pfumvudza Workers Fume As Govt Denies Them Covid Risk Allowance

The department of Agricultural Extension Services(Agritex) in the Ministry Of Lands, Agriculture, Water and Rural Resettlement has urged farmers to broaden their horizons as far as resource mobilisation is concerned so as no to be overdependent on the government.
These remarks were made by Agritex Director, Bernard Mache at a Mashonaland East provincial Agritex annual conference. Mache said:
<blockquote>Farmers should not just look up to the government for resources, but we should be encouraged to diversify to improve on productivity.</blockquote>
The remarks are made when the country is facing severe starvation due after a poor farming season as the Agriculture sector is failing to rise to expected levels.
Farmers have been calling for government support in the form of loan facilities, machinery and tax holidays particularly when they are importing farm inputs.

The veterinary service department director for Masvingo, Dr Earnest Dzimwasha has revealed that over 4 000 cattle died in October due to El Nino induced drought. Dzimwasha said:
<blockquote>Chiredzi and Mwenezi are among the worst affected when it comes to cattle deaths.  If only the farmers could sell some of their livestock so that they can buy feed for the remaining beasts.</blockquote>
Reports also suggest that dozens of cattle are dying in Matebeleland as grazing lands and sources of livestock water have dried up.
The development is sad considering that most of the rural dwellers hinge their livelihoods of farming which includes the rearing of animals.
Drought coupled with power cuts also forced most farmers to snub this year&#8217;s winter wheat production resulting in low wheat production when the country already has a huge shortage of wheat.

Over 4000 Cattle Die In Masvingo In One Month

Zimbabwe&#8217;s winter wheat production is reported to have dropped significantly due to poor rains and power cuts.
Agritex Acting provincial officer for Masvingo, Aaron Muchazivepi, told ZBC News on the sidelines of a field day at Mutendi farm in Masvingo that a number of farmers opted not to grow the crop due to challenges mentioned. Muchazviwanepi said:
<blockquote>We faced water challenges as we did not receive enough rains and farmers ended up not taking up the crop. We also had challenges of load shedding and that affected the winter crop as well as fertiliser availability.</blockquote>
The sad news comes when the country already has a huge wheat deficit which resulted in bread shortages and increased prices for the commodity.
Moreover, there are reports that US$3 billion that was meant for Command Agriculture was misused by Sakunda Holdings that had been contracted to implement the programme.

Zimbabwe Registers Significant Drop In Winter Wheat Production

The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has warned farmers of severe frost likely to affect crops and livestock. The frost is expected beginning today and has been projected to sweep across the country. 
Farmers are therefore urged to engage Agritex extension officers and invest in technologies that will protect their crops and livestock from frost. 
The Met department in a statement said:
<blockquote>People into horticulture, hatchery, poultry, piggery and dairy farming are advised to get appropriate advice from their agricultural extension officers on ways of mitigating the effects of frost on their crops and livestock. Frost is highly likely in susceptible places like Matopos, Gweru, Nyanga, Chivhu, Henderson and Marondera.
However, northern areas which include Mashonaland provinces, Harare Metropolitan and north of Manicaland remain relatively moist. As such, from today clear skies should be prevalent in much of the country except all Mashonaland Provinces, Harare Metropolitan and north of Manicaland provinces where brief morning clouds are expected. It will be chilly in the morning, becoming mild to warm by afternoon. </blockquote>
