Amnesty International (AI) has called on Zimbabwean authorities to release Members of Parliament Job Sikhala (Zengeza West) and Godfrey Sithole (Chitungwiza North).
Today, 21 September 2022, marks 100 days since Sikhala and Sithole were jailed at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison.
The Executive Director of Amnesty International Zimbabwe, Lucia Masuka, said the continued incarceration of the opposition legislators reveals the politicisation of the justice system in Zimbabwe. <a href="https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2022/09/zimbabwe-authorities-must-release-opposition-mps/">Said Masuka</a>:
<blockquote>
The ongoing arbitrary detention of Sikhala and Sithole is unjust and abusive. It has caused unspeakable emotional distress to them and their families.
Zimbabwean authorities cannot continue to incarcerate Sikhala and Sithole on trumped-up charges. They must be released immediately and unconditionally.
… The continued incarceration of Sikhala and Sithole is a travesty of justice. They are victims of a government hellbent on silencing opposition voices.
Zimbabwean authorities must stop criminalizing dissent and instead create a conducive environment for people to freely express themselves.
</blockquote>
Sikhala and Sithole were arrested on 14 June 2022 after attending the funeral of political activist, Moreblessing Ali, who was abducted and killed by people with suspected links to ZANU PF.
Ali was missing for three weeks before being found murdered and her body mutilated on 11 June 2022.
Sikhala, Sithole and 14 CCC members are being accused of encouraging their supporters to cause violence in Nyatsime, Chitungwiza, during Ali’s memorial.
They are facing charges of inciting violence and obstruction of justice and were denied bail several times by the courts.

Amnesty International Demands Immediate And Unconditional Release Of Sikhala

Amnesty International (AI) has condemned the arrest of more than a dozen University of Zimbabwe (UZ) students who were arrested following a protest at the Mt Pleasant Campus on Monday.
The students were peacefully protesting against the recent unilateral tuition fee hikes which they felt were too exorbitant and beyond the reach of many.
In a statement Thursday, Lucia Masuka, Executive Director of Amnesty International Zimbabwe, urged authorities to drop the charges against the students. She said:

Authorities must drop sinister charges against University of Zimbabwe students who have been peacefully protesting high fees and affirm their right to freedom of assembly and expression.
It is such a travesty of justice that these students are having to spend time in detention and courtrooms for simply asking for affordable education so that they can remain in lecture rooms.
The arrests of these students, who were protesting peacefully, are a violation of their right to protest.
Authorities must respect students’ right to peaceful protest and drop all charges against them.
We consider the arrests to be arbitrary and call on the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) to respect the freedom to petition and demonstrate as guaranteed by the constitution.

The 14 students who were arrested on Monday, detained and charged with disorderly conduct were identified as Thelma Nzero, Mufaro Vhutuza, Owen Mashaya, Tinashe Zana, Tinotenda Mwenje, Fletcher Katehwe, Havana Mtetwa, Natasha Dhliwayo, Ropafadzo Mutangadura, Fatima Ajida, Tsungai Chitodha, Beyond Wendy Siwela, David Musasa, and Godknows Zabhura.
Five other students were arrested on Wednesday. They have been identified as Tivimba Musengi, Tinotenda Mangana, Hazel Gwande, Tanyaradzwa Nzvimbo, and Charles Moyo.
Some of the students were released on bail while others were released late on Tuesday after paying ZW$2 000 admission of guilt fines for disorderly conduct.

Amnesty International Condemns Arrest Of UZ Students

Amnesty International has condemned the treatment of Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) legislators Job Sikhala and Godfrey Sithole who have been in remand prison since their arrests in mid-June.
Sikhala (Zengeza West) and Sithole (Chitungwiza North) were arrested on charges of inciting public violence in Nyatsime after the killing of CCC activist, Moreblessing Ali. Both deny the allegations.
In a statement this week, Amnesty International’s deputy director for southern Africa Muleya Mwananyanda said:

The continued detention of Job Sikhala and Godfrey Sithole and the denial of their lawyers access to meet with them is an absolute travesty of justice.
There is an emerging trend where critics of government and members of the opposition are consistently harassed and denied bail by the courts, brought to court in iron legs and at times denied access to their lawyers.
Yet high profile political elites facing criminal offences are in most cases treated entirely differently with bail being granted regardless of the seriousness of the offence.
The charges levelled against Sikhala and Sithole and the denial of bail at the magistrates’ court show all the hallmarks of an effort to persecute and silence political opposition by the Zimbabwean authorities.
The authorities should refocus their efforts on ensuring that Moreblessing Ali’s killers face justice, and ensuring access to justice and effective remedies for victims and their families.

Sikhala and Sithole were both denied bail when they appeared before a magistrate and have since appealed to the High Court.
The two legislators were at the High Court again on Tuesday for the bail appeal but the hearing was postponed to Thursday after prosecutors said they were yet to file opposing papers.

Amnesty International Condemns CCC MPs' Detention, Denial Of Access To Lawyers

Zimbabwe’s chicken farms are under threat from potential avian influenza (AI) outbreak following reports of illegal imports of poultry meat and eggs from South Africa which is battling the disease in some of its provinces.
Last month Botswana banned the importation of live poultry and their fresh products from South Africa, saying the decision followed an AI outbreak in Gauteng.

In a report, the Livestock and Meat Advisory Council (LMAC) said that farmers had raised the red flag over the flood of poultry products into Zimbabwe. The report said:
<blockquote>The Zimbabwe Poultry Association (ZPA) held a meeting on Tuesday 15th June 2021. Discussions included (Statutory Instrument) SI 127 compliance and a return to normalcy for business following engagements with the Reserve Bank through the Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries
Breeding companies cited high demand for hatching eggs and most of them were able to supply day-old chicks to the satisfaction of their customers in the first quarter.
A projected increase in demand for day-old chicks towards the end of the second quarter is expected as the winter season wears off.
Concerns were noted regarding poultry meat and eggs which are being illegally imported mainly from Zambia and South Africa especially as South Africa is a known Avian Influenza zone.</blockquote>
Zimbabwe was hit by two outbreaks of the bird flu in 2017 at Lanark Farm, which is owned by Irvine’s, the biggest chicken breeder in the country.
The farm was quarantined afterwards and over 240 000 birds were destroyed.
AI is a highly infectious and contagious viral disease affecting several species of food-producing birds, such as chickens, turkeys, quails, guinea fowls and others.
The disease can be transmitted to humans through exposure to infected birds or the handling of infected carcasses.

Zimbabwe Under Threat From Avian Flu Outbreak

Authorities in Zimbabwe are continuing their crackdown on dissent with the arrest of a prominent journalist, who exposed a multimillion-dollar scandal involving government officials, and a political activist, who called for a nationwide protest against corruption on 31 July, Amnesty International said today.
Hopewell Chin’ono, an investigative journalist, and Jacob Ngarivhume, an activist who called for the 31 July demonstrations, were arrested earlier today in Harare.
Chin’ono has been exposing alleged corruption, including in the procurement of COVID-19 medical supplies. Deprose Muchena, Amnesty International’s Director for East and Southern Africa said:
<blockquote>The arrests of Hopewell Chin’ono and Jacob Ngarivhume are designed to intimidate and send sending a chilling message to journalists, whistleblowers and activists who draw attention to matters of public interest in Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwean authorities must stop misusing the criminal justice system to persecute journalists and activists who are simply exercising their right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. The authorities must stop using the police and courts to silence dissent.</blockquote>
Local human rights defenders have raised concerns that the police will be targeting any activists who are suspected to be behind the planned protest against alleged corruption. The protest has been trending under the hashtag #31July.
<blockquote>Authorities must immediately and unconditionally release Hopewell Chin’ono and Jacob Ngarivhume. They have committed no crime – no one should be detained for peacefully protesting or reporting on allegations of corruption.</blockquote>
Hopewell Chin’ono was arrested on the morning of 20 July at his home in Harare. Police forced their way into his home and intimidated his domestic workers before arresting him.
The journalist was detained after reporting allegations involving US$60 million worth of contracts awarded to companies at inflated prices for COVID-19 supplies, including Personal Protective Equipment, by the Ministry of Health.
Jacob Ngarivhume, who was also arrested today, is the leader of Transformation Zimbabwe, a local Non-Governmental Organization.
He is suspected of being one of the organizers of the 31 July protests planned against corruption later this month.

Econet Wireless founder and chairman, Strive Masiyiwa has said that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the biggest technology the world has ever seen and that it’s going to create many new jobs. In a post on Facebook, he said that fears that AI will take people’s jobs are ‘nonsense’.

When you hear me begin to talk about something, it means that I’m actively trying to do something to help Africa. But before I delve into the subject of Muzinda Hub, our venture to train coders, let me take you back a little…
Bill Gates started Microsoft, the company that would make him the richest man in the world, in 1975. I was 14 years old at the time. I did not hear about him until about 1982, when I was a student of engineering and our professor started talking about the “Coming Age of Microcomputers.”
“What do you mean by “microcomputers!?” we asked, totally amazed at the idea that these large computers that filled whole rooms back then, and where only engineers had access, could be made available to ordinary people.
“What will they do with these computers? They don’t have engineering degrees to enable them to understand ‘machine code’ and other high level engineering languages!”
“It will never work; those American guys are nuts!” someone shouted from the back of the class.
“These guys are designing new types of computer programming,” the professor explained. “It’s no longer about HARDware but SOFTware (the computer programming).
“It’s not electronic engineers that are needed now, but you guys need to think about using your skills in maths to switch to Computer Programming in these new languages!”
Fast Forward: The new age of “software” gave birth to amazing new companies that transformed everything in society.
Fast Forward: This is 2019 (about 37 years since I first heard the word “microcomputer”). As I look back I see the other extraordinary tech revolutions that followed, such as computers getting smaller and smaller until they’ve become the Smart phone. Their software is unrecognizable now, driven from the “cloud” and on “the edge”.
Writing programs no longer needs a PhD in computer science, although those are the best paid guys on the planet right now (instead of investment bankers)! We now talk of kids as young as five years old “coding”! What is going on?!
If I were in an engineering class at a university today, I know they’d be discussing “Artificial Intelligence” (AI).
A new generation of entrepreneurs will now emerge just like Bill Gates, Larry Ellison, and Steve Jobs did back in the 1980s. And like Jeff Bezos, Tony Ma and Jack Ma they will create amazing businesses to take advantage of the emergence of the mobile Internet.
AI will eventually lead to robots that walk and do amazing things, certainly in most of your lifetimes. But even before then, today, there are going to be amazing companies that emerge.
AI is here!
And you are probably already using it without really stopping to understand why your mobile phone Apps can do such clever things!
I want you to start getting to understand everything you can about AI. It will create an opening for you, but it will not just happen because you have a nice face! You cannot win in a game you don’t even know exists, let alone its rules!

As I reflected on AI one day, I thought of my time in that university class discussing Bill Gates and “microcomputers”. Back then it all seemed like science fiction! Computers so small they could fit on a desk?! If they had said even a computer for your pocket, I would have fainted!
Don’t listen to all this nonsense about AI taking people’s jobs! Hundreds of millions of new types of jobs will be created, just like with every other technology before. AI is the biggest technology we have ever had; it’s bigger than all those other technologies put together.</blockquote>
