The Liberation War Veterans (LWV) says its members will not be lured by President Emmerson Mnangagwa’ Government to campaign for ZANU PF ahead of the 2023 elections saying the Government has reneged on numerous promises it made to the ex-combatants.
Speaking to The NewsHawks last week, Liberation War Veterans chairperson Amos Sigauke claimed the Government has falsely promised them money if they campaign for the ruling party. Said Sigauke.

If it used to happen before, it will not happen again. The comrades are now wiser. If it used to happen, we will not allow that.
That will not happen again, we cannot be used again to serve a purpose to have few people lining their pockets.
We can’t have a handful benefitting from the country’s independence while the rest suffer. We can’t continue having such a situation.
In saying they are pushing for some mujibhas to benefit, they want to push their own youths to get in and benefit and get onto the feeding trough ahead of 2023, but war veterans are wiser than that. We cannot have that.
They have failed to deliver for the last 41 years. We are not asking for the impossible, all we are asking for are our dues.
We are asking for our money which is legally binding but was stolen by some of them. Imagine as we speak 39 of our comrades are before the courts for demanding what is theirs.
Imagine reporting every Friday at our age with the different (health) conditions we have.
I personally go for dialysis and if I do not go to report I am arrested. We don’t take that nonsense.

Thirty-nine war veterans were arrested in October last year in Harare during a protest for better stipends and charged with inciting public violence.
The 39 are out on bail and are required to report every Friday to their nearest police stations, among other conditions.
Sigauke also accused President Mnangagwa’s Government of prioritising the interests of white former commercial farmers at the expense of freedom fighters. He said:

Now they are negotiating with white farmers to compensate them their US$3.5 billion and they did that because they fear them.
They are subservient to the whites and where were these people during the war? Most of them ran away from the bush and were in hotels and universities while sacrificing others and they still want to sacrifice war veterans now but we are not going to do that, never again.
</blockquote>
He said Mnangagwa has made numerous promises to war veterans since April 2018 but none has hitherto materialised. Said Sigauke:

They lied and in 2018 he said he will meet us every April. How many Aprils have passed since then? We can’t be lied to when he meets whites almost all the time and having dinners and all.
Why do they launch their things in hotels and not Zimbabwe Grounds? We can’t be fooled like that. We are wiser than that.
We are all war veterans and bigger in our own right and they must not scare us to say shefu says this or that. We are all equal and of the same age, we fought the same war and no one should threaten anyone.
Tell me, who is in government now who was not there in 1980? What new things do they want to deliver now that they failed to deliver then?
Everyone is crying and it is another way of hoodwinking the people by registering their own youths to benefit from the funds and campaign for them in 2023.
They should be sincere and they hired private lawyers to defend against giving us money.

Last week Defence and War Veterans Affairs Minister Oppah Muchinguri said the Government will address the plight of the ex-combatants and their pensions are being reviewed upwards to match those of the uniformed forces.

War Veterans Vow Not To Campaign For ZANU PF

War veterans have apologised to Zimbabweans for allowing the ruling ZANU PF party to use them to terrorise defenceless citizens during elections.
Addressing a press conference in Harare on Monday, chairperson of the War Veterans’ Welfare Pressure Group, Amos Sigauke, said ex-combatants are above partisan politics and should not be used to brutalise supporters of opposition political parties. He said:

Allow us to apologise on behalf of the generality of war veterans for the trauma inflicted on the people during past elections in our name.
The truth of the matter is that a few of our elements were paid and used to terrify people in our name.
We are above partisan politics as we fought to liberate every citizen regardless of their political inclination.
The majority of those misguided elements were not liberation war veterans.
We fought together with the people and our relationship with them was like fish and water.
</blockquote>
Sigauke made the remarks after police last week arrested nine of the restive ex-combatants for picketing at Finance minister Mthuli Ncube’s offices demanding an upward review of their allowances.
The war veterans were, however, released without charge following a major outcry.
Sigauke also castigated the chairman of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWA), Christopher Mutsvangwa who labelled their group MDC Alliance activists. Said Sigauke:

We wonder how he has made such astounding allegations and we condemn him in the strongest of terms.
We find this utterly disgusting coming from someone who was imposed on us as our chairman.
Maybe the burden of too many portfolios has overweighed him. We hope he will retract his statement, otherwise, he would have to just shut up.
We have nothing to do with political battles and the factional fights in the party. Our concern is our welfare.

War veterans have over the years been making endless demands from the government, which include but are not limited to pensions, medical and dental care, educational assistance, tax and duty exemption, bravery medals and new identity cards, diplomatic passports and automatic promotion of serving veterans of the liberation struggle in State institutions.

War Veterans Apologise For Brutalising Citizens During Elections

A group of disgruntled war veterans on Monday accused the government of neglecting them, a development that exposes deepening divisions in ZANU PF.
The ex-combatants also accused the ruling party of abusing them to carry out violent terror campaigns on its behalf and then abandoning them after elections.
This follows the arrest of nine war veterans by the police last week for picketing at Finance and Economic Development Mthuli Ncube’s offices in protest over paltry allowances. The nine were later released without a charge.
Addressing reporters in Harare yesterday, chairperson of the War Veterans’ Welfare Pressure Group, Amos Sigauke, accused President Emmerson Mnangagwa of “grandstanding” for reportedly calling for a meeting with the ex-combatants as if he was not aware of the challenges that they are facing. Said Sigauke:

We hear from the media that His Excellency the President wishes to meet us to hear our grievances.
We hope this is not another grandstanding sideshow because we have submitted our grievances to his office many times.
There is nothing new to tell him unless of course, he will be coming to tell us the answers to our grievances.
This grandstanding has to be stopped. They talk of shares in mining and a lot of other projects.
They speak from affluent hotels, yet a war veteran on the ground is suffering.

Sigauke, who was flanked over 20 war veterans, added that it was surprising that Mnangagwa’s so-called new dispensation had offered them nothing.
He also criticised the government for being insincere by establishing an exclusive VVIP hospital at Manyame Air Base for top government and ZANU PF officials while the rest of the medical facilities in the county were in a sorry state.

War Veterans Denounce President Mnangagwa

A War Veterans Pressure Group has submitted an application at the High Court in a bid nullify the government’s decision to compensate commercial white farmers who lost their land in the infamous Land reform in the recently signed US$3,5 billion global compensation deed, New Zimbabwe reports.
In court papers seen by the publication, the applicants which include Amos Sigauke, Kossam Mutsinze, Shoorai Nyamangondo, Daphine Kanoti, Dadirai Njitimana, Rueben Zulu, Joseph Chinguwa, Hazvinei Machingura, Cairo Mhandu, Digmore Ndiya and Godfrey Gurira  said it received the news of the compensation deal with shock and dismay:
<blockquote>Since independence in 1980, the indigenous black race of Zimbabwe has been making futile representations to the government demanding necessary arrangements for subsequent payment of compensations for the various sufferance occasioned upon them by and during direct rule of the occupying force, the white race, including the return of their land to them.
In short, the government as both led by the late Robert Mugabe and (now) Emmerson Mnangagwa has not seemed bothered to address positively the issue of indigenous black race’s compensation for the ills they suffered as a direct consequence of government or its agents’ actions.
It was therefore with shock and dismay that the genuine progressive war veterans, in particular those newly resettled on former settler occupied farms, on July 29 received news that the government, through Masuka and Ncube had entered into an exclusive compensation deed.</blockquote>
The application which also cites Agriculture Minister Anxious Masuka, Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube and representatives of the Commercial Farmers Union seeks to stop President Mnangagwa from implementing the July 29 agreement.
