The Permanent Secretary of Information, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Nick_Mangwana/">Nick Mangwana</a>, has claimed that some banks lied that NOSTRO accounts did not have United States dollars (USD) and that triggered mass withdrawals by depositors.
BancABC and FBC Banks were accused of limiting <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">cash withdrawals</a> and prohibiting certain transactions, but they later dismissed the reports as fake. <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">Mangwana</a>‘s comments are believed to refer to the earlier statements by the banks in which the restrictions were announced. In a Twitter post seen by Pindula News, Mangwana said:

A “Bank Run” is when a large number of depositors simultaneously try to withdraw their funds from banks immediately. This is what was caused by the recklessness of a couple of banks which for reasons best known to themselves lied that what was in the Nostro accounts was not USD. Stop It!
</blockquote>
<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Fadzayi_Mahere/">Fadzayi Mahere</a>, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Citizens_Coalition_for_Change/">Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC)</a> spokesperson, responded to Mangawa’s post saying it was confirmation that banks had actually issued the statements which they later denied. She said:

So those bank notices were not fake news? Thanks for confirming. Citizens, we are in trouble. 
</blockquote>
Tinashe Murapata, an economic blogger, disagreed with Mangwana’s comments, stating that banks were attempting to prevent mass withdrawals contrary to his claims that they triggered them. He said:

You’re not helping the situation perm sec (Nick Mangwana). Banks are actually trying to avoid a run but for reasons known to you, you are inflaming the situation. The problem with propaganda here is that depositors have a right to their money. They’re not being irrational considering what has happened this last few weeks. The message from GOZ is to calm the waters and NOT play politics. Perhaps start by actually sharing the data of what is in the system. What we have is end of March. We are now June. Nobody cares to communicate the real time truth. I implore you, on these sensitive matters to communicate with empathy or to keep quiet. Remember most people keep their money under mattresses because they don’t trust GOZ. Therefore, what are you communicating with this tweet? Other than withdraw your money from banks quickly….

Banks are attempting to prevent a run on their institutions by limiting <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">cash withdrawals</a> and prohibiting some transactions. This is intended to ensure that there is enough cash to meet the demand of depositors and to prevent a situation where everyone tries to withdraw their money at once, which could lead to a collapse of the banking system.
However, the imposition of restrictions on <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">cash withdrawals</a> and certain transactions has caused widespread panic among depositors. Some individuals who were contemplating depositing their money have refrained from doing so since they were not sure they would be able to withdraw whenever they want to.

Mangwana: Banks Lied Nostro Accounts Didn't Have USD, Causing Mass Withdrawals

BancABC has announced a system maintenance process that will affect all the bank’s system channels’ availability. We present the bank’s statement below.

BancABC Announce System Maintenance

BancAbc has shared how the 2019 Monetary Policy affects them. This was revealed during a <a aria-label="Global Financial Week, (opens in a new tab)" href="https://www.techzim.co.zw/2019/03/zb-banks-is-going-to-host-a-workshop-that-is-necessary-for-your-child/" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Global Money Week</a> discussion last week. WATCH: Effects Of The Fiscal Policy On BancABC

<a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Highlanders_Football_Club">Highlanders</a> coach <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Erol_Akbay">Erol Akbay</a>, who leaves for his home country on Monday, has said he will only return to the club next year if Bosso can pay his 2017 salary.
Speaking at the club’s press conference yesterday, Akbay said:
<blockquote>Someone asked me if I know that the club’s sponsorship is coming to an end and I said yes. He went on to ask if I’ll return if my salary is not paid and I asked him if he will go to work without being paid and he said no. It’s too far from home to come here for nothing.</blockquote>
Responding to the club’s ability to take care of Akbay’s salary, Highlanders’ secretary-general Emmet Ndlovu said:
<blockquote>The question is not about the BancABC sponsorship coming to an end, but about Highlanders paying his salary. There is no way we can bring him down here without his salary. If you see him coming here next year, know we have the money.</blockquote>

Highlanders coach says he will only return if club can pay him

BancABC lost close to $10 000 to its former supervisor, who allegedly took advantage of the bank’s flawed salary system. Tapiwa Denford Dangare (39), who was the supervisor in the salaries’ processing department, allegedly transferred money meant for the suspense account into one Tizai Taizivei’s bank account with the same bank.
The pair appeared before Harare magistrate Ms Bianca Makwande facing fraud charges. Prosecutor Mr Sebastian Mutizirwa told the court that Dangare’s duties included monitoring and authorisation of salary batches. It is alleged he was also responsible for authorisation of cheque processing. The court heard that BancABC banking system salaries are uploaded automatically in the system.
However, some salaries may be rejected by the system and they would be credited into the reject suspense account, where they would be manually posted to the beneficiary or returned to the sender. It is alleged Dangare’s duty was to monitor clerks handling the salary transactions. Dangare allegedly instructed a clerk to credit the rejected funds into Taizivei account.

Another supervisor steals money from Banc ABC

The Zimbabwe Independent has apologised to <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Chatunga_Mugabe">Chatunga</a> for writing that Banc ABC denied him a loan when in fact it was his brother <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Robert_Mugabe_Jr">Robert Mugabe Jr</a>.
In a statement the paper says that their sources mistook Chatunga for his brother Robert. Part of the statement reads,
<blockquote>BancABC, in a letter to the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ), has since revealed that it was not Bellarmine Chatunga who visited the bank but, in fact, his brother Robert Mugabe Junior. Our sources, who saw Robert Jnr at the bank, mistook him for Bellarmine Chatunga.</blockquote>
The paper says that Robert Jr approached Banc ABC accompanied by a poten-tial business partner with a view to discussing a maize importation facility.
The paper goes on to apologise to Chatunga for any harm the story may have caused,
<blockquote>In the circumstances, we apologise to Bellarmine Chatunga for the harm the story may have caused.</blockquote>

Zimbabwe Independent apologises to Chatunga for Banc ABC story. Says sources mistook him for Robert Mugabe Jr

<a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Republic_Police">Police</a> in <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Bulawayo">Bulawayo</a> have arrested two bank tellers for allegedly stealing more than $60 000 from BancABC. Sources at the bank alleged Hloniphani Ngwenya (33) of Emganwini Suburb and Progress Moyo (26) who resides in the central business district stole $60 000 and R10 540 from BancABC, Jason Moyo Street Branch on Monday.
The duo allegedly made fictitious entries into their daily float accounts to steal the money. When the discrepancy was discovered, said a source, officials locked the duo in the bank overnight as they carried out investigations.
Police are said to have recovered about $5 600 in Moyo’s car the following morning. Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Precious Simango yesterday said Ngwenya was still in custody. Speaking to The Chronicle she said,
<blockquote>I can confirm we’ve arrested one of the tellers who was found with a shortfall of $55 000 and over R10 500 for theft and nothing has been recovered so far. The other teller was found in possession of $5 660 and he is out of custody as investigations are in progress.</blockquote>

Banc ABC tellers steal over $60 000

The Zimbabwe Independent has published an article insisting that Banc ABC denied Robert Mugabe’s son <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Bellarmine_Chatunga_Mugabe">Bellarmine Chatunga</a> a US$380 000 loan. This comes after Banc ABC issued a press statement discrediting the story.
The Independent insists that Banc ABC issued the press statement due to political pressure and reports that Chatunga’s failure to secure a loan from BancABC is a rare example of prudent credit risk assessment by a local bank as most of them would be keen to lend to such a high-profile and well-connected individual.
They further report that the bank also desperately engaged a public relations agency, Magna Carta, after publication of the story on September 30 in an effort to have a detailed question-and-answer interview with the author of the story before resolving to flight press releases via the state-controlled media.

The Independent insists Banc ABC denied Mugabe's son a $380 000 loan

Banc ABC issued a press statement responding to a front news story by the Zimbabwe Independent that they had denied a loan to Robert Mugabe’s son, <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Chatunga_Mugabe">Chatunga</a>. The Zimbabwe Independent wrote that Banc ABC rejected  Chatunga’s,
<blockquote>US$380 000 loan application to fund his obscure businesses and lavish lifestyle as it seeks to contain non-performing credit to politically exposed persons on its books.</blockquote>
In the press statement Banc ABC said that Chatunga has never approached their bank for a loan and that they have no relationship with him,
<blockquote>Banc ABC wishes to categorically put on record that, Mr Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe has no relationship whatsoever with Banc ABC and that he has never at any point sought a loan or any other facility from the bank.</blockquote>
