A 23-year-old man from Harare who sold beer to children on Christmas Day last year was on Friday, 01 March found guilty of selling alcohol to persons under the age of 18 by the Harare Magistrates Court.
The suspect, Phaeton Mutiyaya, was arrested after a video clip of children drinking beer in central Harare circulated on social media platforms.
The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) said Mutiyaya will be back in Court on Monday, 4 March for sentencing. The NPAZ said:

Phaeton Mutiyaya (23) who sold alcohol to 10 minors aged between 5 and 11 over the festive season was this Friday found guilty by the Harare Magistrates Court.
When a video of the drunk minors went viral on social media, the public was outraged and condemned the sale of alcohol to persons under the age of 18.
Mutiyaya was selling alcohol illegally from a private residence in Mbare. He will be back in Court on Monday the 4th of March for sentencing.

Man (23) Who Sold Beer To Children On Christmas Day Found Guilty

Police say they have identified and located six young girls and a boy who were filmed drinking beer at a shopping centre before a video of the incident was widely shared on social media platforms.
According to a statement posted on the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) X page this Tuesday, 02 January, the incident occurred at Juru Growth Point.
Police also said they located the parents and guardians of the minors. The children are being counselled by the ZRP Victim Friendly Unit (VFU). Read the statement:

Reference is made to social media videos which went viral and showed some young girls drinking beer at a shopping centre in the country.
The ZRP has established that the place is Juru Growth Point, Murewa. The ZRP has identified and located the six young girls and one boy.
Their parents and guardians have also been located. The Police VFU is now counselling the minors in consultation with relevant Government departments.

Last week, a shebeen operator in Mbare was arrested for selling alcohol to minors aged between 5 and 11 years on Christmas day. A video showing the minors drinking alcohol went viral on Boxing Day.
In Zimbabwe, the sale of liquor, including beer, is regulated by the Liquor Act, which, among other things, strictly prohibits the selling of beer to children.
Thus, selling alcohol to children is illegal and highly irresponsible. It poses serious risks to their health and development.
The legal drinking age in Zimbabwe is 18 years. Individuals who are 18 years or older are allowed by law to buy and consume alcoholic beverages.

ZRP Identifies Young Girls Drinking Beer In Viral Video

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has said it has identified some of the minors who were part of a group of boys who were filmed while openly drinking beer in Harare’s central business district (CBD).
Two of the boys are siblings and their parents, who have also been identified by the police, separated over a year ago. The boys left home for the streets where they joined other “street kids”.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, 27 December, ZRP spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi also said a local businessman recorded the viral video and is currently assisting the police with investigations. Read the statement:

Reference is made to the social media videos which went viral on 26th December 2023 showing minors drinking alcohol in Harare Central Business District and subsequent Police investigations into the incident.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police reports that the identity of two minors aged 13 and 11 years is now known.
Their mother and father have also been identified and located. The father and mother separated in November 2022 with the two minors being taken into the custody of their mother in the Epworth area, Harare.
It is alleged that they later left home and engaged in street begging, vending and some misdemeanours in Harare Central Business District with other “street kids”.
On 25th December 2023, the two minors who were in the company of eight (08) street kids obtained Mayfair alcohol through a person who is yet to be identified by the Police.
The minors sat on the veranda of a cellphone shop along Inez Terrez near a prominent food outlet. They consumed the alcohol openly in public.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police has also identified a local business person who recorded the viral social media video. He is currently assisting the Police to get full facts on the incident.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police is still pursuing the identity of the other minors who were in the company of the two and allegations that some women were seated at the corner of Speke and Inez Terez Street and interacted with the minors.
It has also been confirmed that the minors were drinking alcohol while eating some chips and chicken.

Children Filmed Consuming Alcohol In Viral Video Are Streets Kids - Police

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has implored school authorities to monitor learners so that they do not consume alcohol during break time or lunch.
Posting on X, the ZRP said on Monday, that a Form One female learner was sexually abused by a drunk Form Two male learner at the school premises in Waterfalls Harare.
According to the Police, the assailant had been drinking beer with other learners at break time before he pounced on the victim. Police said:

The ZRP is concerned with reports of students who are drinking beer at school premises and urges school authorities to monitor the students even when they are on break or lunch at school grounds.
On 25/09/23 a Form One female student was sexually abused by a Form Two male student following a beer-drinking spree with other students during break time at the school grounds in Waterfalls, Harare.

Reports suggest that drug and substance abuse is now rampant among juveniles as highly intoxicating illicit brews such as “kambwa” are now readily available and affordable.
There are also concerns among parents and guardians that teachers who are underpaid and demoralised no longer strictly monitor learners during school hours.

Beer-drinking Spree At School Results In Sexual Abuse Of Form One Girl

Local football fans are still not allowed to bring alcoholic beverages into stadiums on matchdays, the Premier Soccer League (PSL) has said.
Late last month, PSL Chief Executive Officer Kennedy Ndebele said they had given clubs the green light to sell beer at local football stadiums provided clubs meet the set requirements.
However, one football fan complained that he recently brought alcohol to the National Sports Stadium in a plastic container but was forced to pay a US$5 bribe to be allowed to get into the match venue with the beer. Said the fan:

Please clarify to me if I can bring my alcohol the next time I come to the ground because on Sunday at NSS I was forced to fork out a $5 bribe in order to enter with my alcohol which was in plastic containers. The officers said you did not send any comms regarding that. Pliz help.
</blockquote>
In response, the PSL said alcohol remains banned from stadiums and that position has not changed. The PSL said:
<blockquote>
Alcohol is not allowed in the stadium even in plastic containers. That position has not changed. Clubs are required to meet certain requirements for them to be allowed to sell alcohol at the stadia. Until that is done, no alcohol will be allowed.

In his statement released in March, Ndebele said clubs should secure written permission from stadium owners for the sale of alcohol. He said:

Following a Board resolution made at the Annual General Meeting held on 17 March 2023 to allow alcohol sales at the stadia, Clubs are advised to secure written permission from stadium owners for the sale of alcohol.
Clubs are further advised to get amended Lease Agreements that allow the sale of alcohol, police clearance from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) as well as liquor licenses from the Liquor Licensing Board.
Clubs are also required to indicate where the alcohol will be sold at the stadium.

In the top tiers of football in England, that is in the EFL and EPL, all fans are banned from consuming alcohol “in view of the pitch”.
Alcohol is sold in the concourses of stadiums before and during the game but cannot be brought into the stands.

Chibuku Super Banana Flavour Launched

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has launched a manhunt for two Mberengwa men who allegedly killed a 26-year-old man after he drank their beer without their consent.
ZRP spokesperson in Midlands Province, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said the murder incident occurred on Thursday at Chemubhobho business centre near Mnene Mission Hospital in Mberengwa. He said:

I can confirm that police are investigating a matter in which a Mberengwa man was stabbed to death over beer.
It is alleged that on March 31 around 12 pm at Chemubhobho business centre near Mnene Mission Hospital in Mberengwa the now deceased Definite Munyayi Moyo was drinking beer in the company of two suspects Shepherd Hove and Ephraim Chengeta.
</blockquote>
Insp Mahoko said Moyo allegedly consumed Hove’s beer without his consent resulting in a misunderstanding. He added:
<blockquote>
Hove and Chengeta started assaulting Moyo with clenched fists before Hove withdrew an okapi knife which he used to stab the now deceased on the thighs several times.
… Moyo later died from the injuries he sustained and his body was ferried to Zvishavane District Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
</blockquote>
By the time Moyo passed away, Hove and Chengeta and already fled from the scene, leaving their victim in a pool of blood.

Man Fatally Stabbed For Drinking Beer

Police officers and soldiers reportedly teamed up and vandalised cars and other property at Mbalabala Shopping Centre near Mbalabala Barracks on Christmas eve after some local beer drinkers had mocked the soldiers.
According to <a href="https://twitter.com/NewsHawksLive/status/1475475341967826948?s=20">The NewsHawks</a>, the imbibers and soldiers exchanged taunts over beer, resulting in the latter mobilising the Police to attack residents randomly.
Eyewitnesses told the publication that trouble started when local residents and soldiers going for a beer drink began taunting each other.
The soldiers reportedly insulted the residents who then responded in kind, saying the security forces members had no money since they were merely civil servants and nothing special about them.
The mockery did not go down well with the soldiers who reportedly mobilised police from Esigodini, 40km southeast of Bulawayo, to come and attack the residents over the taunts.
The group of police officers and soldiers vandalised cars and attacked people indiscriminately. Said a The NewsHawks source:

After the heated exchanges, on 25 December afternoon, a truckload of police officers from Esigodini descended on local residents and shoppers, many of the villagers from Filabusi, vandalising their cars at Mbalabala Shopping Centre, near Mbalabala Barracks.
The police were called in and deployed by the soldiers, and in the process of the attacks, they vandalised property and cars belonging to Innocent Ndlovu, Nhlalwenhle Ndlovu, Wellington Ncube, Lewis Nkomo and Steven Sibanda, among others.
During the heated exchanges soldiers had opined residents couldn’t afford to drink, but they reacted by saying: ‘Lina alila mali vele ngitsho le-cent ngoba lingama civil servants nje angela lutho’ (You don’t have any money at all because you are just mere civil servants).
The police were called by some soldiers who had been taunted by residents and shoppers who were drinking, shouting at them saying ‘alila vele ngitsho le-cent ngoba linga ma-civil servants. Kodwa thina namuhla sizabuhlaba utshwala’. (You have no money, but we are going to drink.
After being taunted soldiers said ‘horayithi manje sizabona ukuthi lizabuhlaba njani’. (Ok we will see how you will drink your beer). 
After a little while, Esigodini police arrived and pounced on everyone, damaging cars and property. Ironically, the case was reported to the police.

Mbalabala is a small growth point in Matabeleland South Province on the main Beitbridge-Bulawayo highway situated approximately 67km from Bulawayo.

Soldiers Assault Villagers After Exchanging Taunts Over Beer

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has launched a manhunt for seven men for the murder of a 30-year-old man, who was stabbed for allegedly “showing off” at a bar in Kwekwe’s area of Munyathi.
The now-deceased, David Tembo (30), was stabbed by seven assailants as he tried to buy beer at Dollar Bar on 13 September.
Midlands Provincial Spokesperson Inspector Emanuel Mahoko confirmed the murder. He said:
<blockquote>
It was reported that the now deceased Tembo, of Trafalgar 63 Mine in Kadoma arrived at Dollar Bar in the company of three of his friends intending to buy beer.
They found the bar closed with seven unknown men seated outside the bar.
</blockquote>
One of the men then awakened the bar lady who then sold beer to Tembo and his friends.
The seven suspects then confronted Tembo and his three friends, accusing them of showing off and a misunderstanding arose.
One of the suspects drew out a knife and stabbed Tembo in the thigh. He bled profusely until he became unconscious and died in his car, Insp Mahoko said.
The matter was reported to the police and Tembo’s body was ferried to Kwekwe General Hospital Mortuary where it awaits a post-mortem.

Man Fatally Stabbed For 'Showing Off' Beer

A couple from Nyamandlovu was burnt beyond recognition after forgetting to blow out a candle that they had been using on their way home from a beer binge.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said Sipho Sibanda (53) and his wife Adelaide Tshuma (48) bodies’ were found on Sunday morning by a neighbour who had come to check on them.
Matabeleland North police provincial spokesperson Inspector Glory Banda said the couple’s neighbour noticed that their roof had caved in and household property had been reduced to ashes. Said Banda:

On the 20th of August around 9 PM, Sipho Sibanda and his wife Adelaide Tshuma were drinking beer in the nearby village, they were later passed by two villagers namely Mr Banda Chuku a male adult and Mr Maxwell Nkomo.
Sibanda and Tshuma were evidently drunk and carrying a candle going to their place of residence.
On August 21 at around 7 AM, Chuku visited Sibanda and found the roof of their bedroom fallen inside.
The iron sheets were blackened with smoke and the room full of ashes.
… No foul play is suspected and the necessity for post-mortem was waived by Tsholotsho resident magistrate Mr Victor Mpofu.

Couple Burnt Beyond Recognition After Beer Binge

Finance and Economic Development Minister <a href="https://www.dailynews.co.zw/articles/2019/12/13/mthuli-says-no-to-beer-price-hike" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Mthuli Ncube</a> rejected calls by the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Defence to increase excise duty on alcohol as well as levy a tax on environment polluters to raise funds to cushion member of the security services and war veterans during times of economic hardships.
Ncube argued that increasing the excise duty even by one per cent would be counterproductive. He said
<blockquote>The excise duty on alcohol and beverages is already very high. It is averaging 40 per cent. Now we are being asked to add one per cent and it will be too much. Any further increase could be regressive and that negatively impacts the growth of production volumes in the sector.
Furthermore, Ema (Environmental Management Authority) is implementing a number of levies targeted at regulating operators that pollute the environment as well as reducing the negative impacts thereof.</blockquote>
In his 2020 national budget presentation, Ncube allocated billions of dollars towards security clusters after he had warned that maintaining peace in the country was not negotiable.
Reports indicate that soldiers are poorly-fed in the barracks and also lack other basic necessities such as uniforms.

The country’s biggest beverages manufacturer, Delta Beverages has announced new beer prices following the return of the Zimbabwe Dollar.
Some of the newly-gazetted prices are as follows:

NewZimbabwe reports that retailers are charging different prices depending on the price they buy forex for in order to procure Delta Beverages products. Delta Beverages is by far the largest manufacturer and distributor of beer in Zimbabwe.
One retailer told NewZimbabwe:
<blockquote>We are now buying beer from Delta using a black market rate of RTGS$1 to US$4, 25. In order for me to make profit, I am now selling a 750 ml bottle of green beers for RTGS$7. I am sourcing the forex from the black market where the rates are very low here in Bulawayo.</blockquote>
