The family of a 14-year-old girl who recently lost her life during childbirth at an apostolic sect’s church gathering in Marange is reportedly planning to offer their nine-year-old daughter to their in-laws as her late sister’s replacement (chigadzamapfihwa).
Evans Momberume, the man who allegedly impregnated the girl, Memory Machaya, is still walking free, more than two weeks after the minor’s death.
Memory reportedly died around 9 AM on 15 July and was secretly buried two hours later.
The Manica Post has gathered that Memory was forced out of school while doing Form One in Mhondoro to get married to Momberume.
Memory, the last born child in a family of six, was having her first birth. She left behind a baby boy who is said to be in the custody of his father.
Efforts by The Manica Post to get in touch with Momberume were fruitless as no one had his contact details.
In a telephone interview with The Manica Post on Thursday, the Machaya spokesperson, a bitter Alice Mabika, confirmed her niece’s painful death.
Alice said she and Memory’s mother, Shy Mabika, were barred from entering the church shrine after their daughter’s burial.
The Mabika sisters said their daughter was denied medical attention at her hour of need.
Alice said from the information they obtained from Momberume’s sister (name not supplied), those who attended to Memory on the fateful day say she complained of a headache.
“Midwives” reportedly diagnosed that Memory had ulcers in the mouth and nose and went on to rub her mouth with salt while pouring paraffin into her nose. Said, Alice:

We were told that five ‘midwives’ attended to Memory and rubbed salt in her mouth while pouring paraffin into her nose. We were told that she had a seizure and hit her head on the ground.
She died soon after delivering her baby boy and the church members went on to bury her without involving us.
</blockquote>
After being notified about Memory’s death, her mother, a devotee of the church who had not attended the church gathering in question, went to the shrine in the company of her relatives.
The family spent the night waiting to be granted access but were barred from entering the shrine by the sect’s security team. Said, Alice:

When we arrived at the shrine around 2 pm, we were told to wait until the prayers were done at 6 pm.
The security team checked us around 7 pm, but they became evasive. Our pleas to be attended to fell on deaf ears and we had to spend the night in the open.
We remained resolute in our quest to see our daughter’s body, but the security details would not budge.
We even tried to engage the service of our relative who is in the police force in Chinhoyi.
We phoned him and he tried to talk to the church’s security personnel, but they refused to entertain him over the phone.

Alice said Memory’s mother is “devastated” by her daughter’s death and she is currently bedridden at her home in Kwekwe.
Meanwhile, pressure groups have demanded the arrest and prosecution of the church’s leaders and the man who impregnated Memory.
According to the Constitution of Zimbabwe, the legal age of consent for sexual activity is 16, while the minimum age for marriage is 18.

Family Of Girl (14) Who Died During Childbirth "Offers" The Husband Her Sister (9) As A Replacement

Pressure is mounting on authorities to bring to justice leaders of an Apostolic sect where a 14-year-old girl died during childbirth last week in Bocha, Marange in Manicaland Province, sparking public outrage.
The pregnant girl, identified as Memory Machaya, was allegedly denied hospital assistance by members of the apostolic sect.
The church members reportedly resorted to prayers and kept the teenager at the shrine until she died due to complications.
However, to date, no official police report has been made on the matter despite the wide publicity of the incident.
Africa Union (AU) goodwill ambassador for ending child marriage Nyaradzai Gumbonzvanda challenged law enforcement agents to bring the “criminals” who include the church leaders and the man who impregnated her to book. Said Gumbonzvanda:
<blockquote>
This child has a name, family, community, and a government. Her death has created outrage. This child was raped, yet the focus is on the pregnancy and not the gross inhumane violation of her body and her person.
The political will to act is slow or inadequate. Many days later, we are telling the story of her death.
When the story became known, I expected the police to take a strong position, together with the relevant ministries working to end child marriages.

Gumbonzvanda queried why the white garment churches are seemingly above the law. She said:
<blockquote>
They break many laws and nothing happens to them. They are known, their leadership and their structures.
Why do they seem untouchable? They render all the systems, policies and structures irrelevant.
</blockquote>
Sethulo Ncube from the Zimbabwe Women Lawyers Association said it was a criminal offence to sleep with a minor.
She said the Domestic Violence Act looks at child marriages as a form of domestic violence and whoever impregnated the girl should be arrested and prosecuted.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi told NewsDay that he was still to get the full report on the matter.

Relatives of the late Anna Machaya are yet to come to terms with the way they were treated at Johanne Marange church where Anna was receiving prayers.
Family spokesperson Alice Mabika said Anna’s mother Shy Mabika was denied access to the burial of her daughter where bouncers forced her to remain silent as she mourned her daughter. Alice told H-Metro:
<blockquote>
We were denied access to witness the burial of our daughter as bouncers silenced us and warned us over spreading news of the death of our relative.
</blockquote>
Alice also said the girl’s life could have been saved had she been rushed to a hospital but those who attended to her were indoctrinated to the extent of watching her die while speaking in tongues and beating trumpets.
<blockquote>
Akabva asununguka mwana mukomana iye achibva ashaya akabuda ropa mukanwa nemumhino. [She gave birth to a baby boy but bled through the mouth and nose. She died immediately.]
</blockquote>
H-Metro further reports that Anna was buried at the shrine where she was receiving prayers.
The publication reports that Johanne Marange shrine leaders refused to entertain its news crew.
Some apostolic sects in the country are still forbidding their members from visiting modern hospitals saying all their issues can be addressed at the church.
Senior church women are reportedly acting as midwives who help expecting women to deliver.

A 14-year-old Girl Dies Giving Birth At Shrine

Members of the Johanne Marange Apostolic sect reportedly barred police officers at Marange Police Station from getting into their shrine in Mafararikwa village, Bocha.
Over 30 000 Mapositori (Apostolic sect) members were holding their annual Passover at the shrine since 3 July in contravention of a COVID-19-induced government ban on public gatherings.
The retreat was allowed to continue uninterrupted despite a government ban on public gatherings, with the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) saying it was only aware of a few permanent residents at the shrine.
However, NewsDay reported some sect members as saying that the Passover had over 30 000 delegates.
One of the sect members, who identified himself as Madzibaba John, told the publication that their leaders had ordered them to vacate the shrine on Sunday night. He said:
<blockquote>We have started packing our bags since we have been told to start going back home.</blockquote>
Dozens of hired lorries and taxis were parked outside the shrine, ready to take the congregants back to their respective communities.
Officers at Marange Police Station claimed that they were denied entry into the shrine since the meeting started early this month. A police source said:
<blockquote>We even requested permission from our officer-in-charge, Inspector Muruko, to teargas the sect members to disperse them, but she told us that we were ‘small fish in the game’.</blockquote>
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi last night said he was unaware that law enforcement agents had been denied entry into the shrine.
Bocha Diamond Community Trust chairperson Moses Mukwada, who has been vocal about the super spreader gathering, said the Mapositori retreat is a COVID-19 time bomb.
He urged the police to mount roadblocks around Marange and make sure that all the pilgrims are tested for coronavirus. Said Mukwada:
<blockquote>It won’t be surprising that many of them will test positive for COVID-19.</blockquote>
Some of the congregants reportedly came from neighbouring countries including South Africa, Mozambique and Namibia.

Mapositori Deny Police Officers Entry Into Marange Shrine

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) on Saturday claimed that there was no unusual gathering of members of the Johanne Marange Apostolic sect in Manicaland in violation of the COVID-19 lockdown.
The ZRP said that those who are said to have gathered for an annual festival were actually permanent residents at a shrine there.
This comes after activists urged the police to act against the thousands that allegedly congregated at Mafararikwa in Bocha as they were violating COVID-19 restrictions.
Thousands of Johane Marange sect members are said to have been gathered since 3 July and only started dispersing last night.
Police, who have been saying they were not aware of what was happening at the shrine, on Saturday said there was never a gathering. National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said:
<blockquote>As far as the police is concerned, there are no people gathered in Marange except for those who are permanent residents at the shrine.
Police have deployed officers on the ground to monitor the situation.
Police in Marange, Manicaland, in their findings said there are no people gathered in Marange.</blockquote>
Last week the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) wrote to the police demanding action to disperse the church members, raising COVID-19 fears. The police did not respond to the 12 July letter.
Manicaland-based Bocha Diamond Community Trust chairman Moses Mukwada also gave police 48 hours to act, but there was no action.
There are fears within the Marange community that there could be a COVID-19 outbreak as the shrine was overcrowded.
Mukwada claimed that there were political bigwigs, who were in support of the gathering.

Police Dismiss Reports Of Marange Sect Gathering

6 employes at Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Companies working in Chiyadzwa tested positive for COVID-19 during a routine check-up, Zim Morning Post reports.
This was confirmed by ZCDC’s spokesperson Sugar Changonda who spoke to the publication and said:
<blockquote>I can confirm that we have positive cases at ZCDC mine. We had workers that were showing some symptoms and we engaged the Ministry of Health and got the workers tested. We had six ZCDC workers that tested positive for COVID-19. We also had two positive cases of other people who are our service providers.
Those that tested positive are on quarantine at Rowa Training Centre in Mutare.  Health staff is closely monitoring their conditions and we are told that they are in stable condition. We are looking forward to their recovery
However, the vigorous testing of all workers is ongoing at the mine and so far we are satisfied with the ongoing process. I want to guarantee that mine workers are observing all the health precautions. Our health teams are also on the ground to ensure that the workers comply with the COVID-19 precautions.</blockquote>
However, the Chiyadzwa Community Development Trust, Lovemore Mukwada is concerned if the situation is not given the proper attention it will affect the whole community. Mukwada while speaking to the publication about his concerns said:
<blockquote>We are very much concerned by the fact that we have the information that there are workers who are COVID-19 positive. The fear is that these workers are from the community and this will spread to the 
community. I think is issue has to be dealt with as a matter of priority because we feel that ZCDC is defying the COVID-19 health regulations by allowing such a huge number of workers working without considering the precautionary measures. We are afraid that the virus will cascade down into the community</blockquote>
Other community-based organisation in the area Marange Community Trust and Bocha Development Trust are imploring the Health Ministry and ZCDC to attend to the issue with urgency.
