A 2017 article by Wandile Sihlobo suggests that Zimbabwe was never Africa’s breadbasket as others claim.
Basing on a number of indicators, Sihlobo concluded that when Zimbabwe’s former president, the late Robert Mugabe inherited the country from Ian Smith, Zimbabwe was hardly able to sustain itself. Part of the article reads:
<blockquote>The available data, which covers three distinct phases in Zimbabwe’s agricultural sector, suggests that the country was self-sufficient before and in the two decades after Mugabe came to power.
Even then, Zimbabwe’s maize and wheat output were generally modest and volatile. It wasn’t sufficient to support strong exports to the rest of the continent and world – which fails to fit the idea of a food-basket.
In the third phase, the country’s maize and wheat production significantly declined, which further weakened Zimbabwe’s standing in the continent’s food system.</blockquote>
The sentiments were supported by <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/09/07/full-thread-robert-mugabe-never-inherited-a-great-country/">Brian Kagoro, a Zimbabwean lawyer and academic who recently claimed that the late former president of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe did not inherit a great country from Ian Smith as others claim.</a>
Meanwhile, comments on Sihlobo’s article suggest that although the analysis was great, it was making reference to wrong reports. A number of responses suggested that Zimbabwe was the breadbasket for the SADC region and not Africa at large.

When State-sponsored violence does not affect your mother, brother, sister, father, wife, cousin or friend it seems both remote and justified. You argue that the victims deserved it ‘what were they doing in the first place?’Grief has no permanent address!
Justice? Injustice? Kuruneri and Makamba were charged with invented crimes; Mai Mujuru was framed; ED border jumped to escape; Chombo in Chains; Kudzai Chipanga arrested; Kasukuwere charged for border jumping and Mupfumira for corruption? Zvibate, your day beckons.
When violence becomes our stock-in-trade and consistent mode of operation, we unwittingly turn society into a field of thugs and thuggery. We teach the young that the only way to be heard and respected is by using greater force than the next person. In this we err.
Do justice, Love mercy and be kind, especially to the poor, the needy and oppressed. Speak out on behalf of the voiceless ( or those whose voice has been muted by the terror of the powerful and wealthy). This is true religion!
Peace-loving does not mean starving in silence (and now darkness too, since there is no electricity). Mwana asingacheme anofira mumbereko! It is the duty of citizens to point out when leadership no longer serves their rights, interests&amp;legitimate expectations.
This new ‘Christianity’ that prefers, favours and prioritizes hob-knobbing with the rich &amp; powerful ignores Proverbs 31:8-10 that says:
“Speak out on behalf of the voiceless, and for the rights of all who are vulnerable….. defend the needy and the poor”.</blockquote>

Political analyst and civil society leader Brian Kagoro has warned first lady Grace Mugabe not to run for Vice President at Zanu PF’s extraordinary congress in December. Zanu-PF has indicated that it will consider a women’s league proposal to elevate a woman into the presidium which has sparked speculation that this is meant to elevate Grace.
Kagoro advised Grace to appoint an ally saying that it would make political sense. Said Kagoro:
<blockquote>My own view is that — though easily doable — it would be a titanic political error for Grace Mugabe to go for the vice presidency during her husband’s tenure as president. The moral implications and optics would be abysmal. This would only serve to galvanise and deepen sentiment against the first family and Zanu PF across the party divide, generational divide and class divide. It would caricature the entire Zanu PF process, mutilate whatever remains of its liberation heritage and legacy and above all paint Grace Mugabe as a power-hungry and self-interested Machiavellian character. This too would suit the narrative by her detractors that seeks to paint her as a threat to Zanu PF’s long-term survival. I suspect that she is better advised and politically astute than be tempted onto such an irreversible and disastrous path. There is speculation that her game plan is to become vice president and ultimately president of Zimbabwe. We must distinguish between being vice president of Zimbabwe through an elective process and being appointed as such by the Zanu PF Congress. Mafirakureva (Grace) could easily bag the post of VP if she really wanted it. I suspect that politically it would be more strategic for her to allow one of her allies, a pliant, loyal and senior female — preferably with war veteran credentials — to land the VP job. Without being appointed into the presidium, Grace Mugabe already commands a lot of informal power and ‘unusual’ influence for a liberation party.  The critical votes of the provincial as well as women and youth structures will determine the female vice presidency.</blockquote>
