The Minister of Health and Childcare, Douglas Mombeshora, says the prevalence of cervical cancer in Zimbabwe is worryingly high, with about 3,000 cases diagnosed each year, reported <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/cervical-cancer-prevalence-in-zimbabwe-worryingly-high-says-health-minister-2-000-women-lose-battle-yearly/">NewZimbabwe.com</a>.
Addressing journalists and a visiting team from the World Health Organisation (WHO), from Geneva, Switzerland, Momboshera said it was worrisome that more than 70% of people diagnosed with cervical cancer succumb to the disease. He said:

Cervical cancer remains a concerning public health challenge in our country, as it has far-reaching implications for the health and well-being of our citizens, particularly for our women.
The prevalence of cervical cancer in Zimbabwe is worryingly high, with an estimated 3,000 new cases diagnosed each year, out of which an estimated 2,000 women lose their battle to this disease.
This means that more than 70% of people diagnosed with cervical cancer do not survive.

Mombeshora said the government was committed to attaining its goal of eliminating cervical cancer by 2030. He said:

Today, l want to share a message of determination and hope for Zimbabwe as we proactively take the needed steps to protect our women and conquer this disease in our country.
Over the past decade, Zimbabwe has been steadfast in its commitment to cervical cancer elimination, and today we reaffirm our dedication to this cause and set our sights on the ambitious goal of eliminating cervical cancer by 2030.

The Minister said that since the inception in 2018 of the national vaccination programme against human papillomavirus (HPV), significant progress has been made, with over two million girls jabbed to date.
HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI). Vaccines can prevent some of the health effects the virus causes. Said Mombeshora:

That is why, guided by our national cancer prevention and control plan, we are making critical strides. Over 200 healthcare facilities across Zimbabwe now offer VIAC (Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid and Camera) screenings, and 60 locations provide HPV tests. These expanded services are empowering women with the tools for early detection.

VIAC is an effective way to prevent cervical cancer in women aged between 30-50 years old. The procedure involves examining the opening of the womb, or the cervix, for changes that might lead to cancer.
The delegation from WHO Geneva, Switzerland later toured Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital and Umboe Clinic in Mhangura, situated about 40km from Chinhoyi.
The WHO entourage, accompanied by the Health Minister who is also Mhangura Member of Parliament (MP) and Mashonaland West Provincial Minister Marian Chombo.

2 000 Women Succumb To Cervical Cancer Each Year In Zimbabwe - Health Minister

Dark &amp; Lovely, TCB Naturals and others companies are being sued for using chemicals that are linked to cancer
Many black women in Africa still use perms and hair relaxers to straighten their hair. The relaxers help make coily hair silky. But the relaxers have chemicals that can cause cancer.

Scientific research has linked chemicals known as  endocrine disruptors in hair relaxers to uterine and breast cancer.
In October 2022, the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) found women who used hair relaxers more than four times a year were at higher risk of developing uterine cancer.
In the USA, many Black women are now rejecting these chemical straighteners and they are suing the manufacturers as a result of the research results.
Despite criticism for the use of potentially harmful chemicals, the companies involved – like Dark &amp; Lovely, TCB Naturals and Namaste Laboratories LLC – are still selling the products around the world. In some African countries however, sales are actually increasing.
Kenya, Cameroon, Tunisia, South Africa, and Nigeria are among the countries where sales for perms and relaxers from 2017 to 2022 grew, according to <a href="https://www.euromonitor.com/">Euromonitor</a>, a market research firm.
Said Seyi Falodun-Liburd, co-director of Level Up, a gender justice organization in London:

“We understand that Black women use hair relaxers for a range of reasons, some within their control, some not. And so, for us, it’s not about shaming any Black woman about making whatever choices she makes.”

Falodun-Liburd, led a campaign to get L’Oreal, one of the world’s largest beauty and cosmetics companies, to remove its hair-straightening products from the market following research in 2021 linking relaxers to an increased risk of breast cancer.
Even in Zimbabwe, a cursory check by Pindula via Google Search and listings on social media marketplace websites shows that perms and relaxers are still very popular in the country. Some are sold by large retailers such as Ok Zimbabwe

Popular Hair Perms and Relaxers in Africa linked to Cancer

Work to fix radiotherapy machines at the Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals has reportedly commenced, raising the hope that cancer patients may finally get treatment at the country’s largest referral hospital.
However, the head of the Radiotherapy department at Parirenyatwa Hospital, Nothando Mutizira has lamented the non-availability of drugs and cancer machines in the country.
As reported by <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/work-to-fix-radiotherapy-machines-begins-at-parirenyatwa-patients-stranded-years-after-equipment-broke-down/">NewZimbabwe.com</a>, radiotherapy machines at Parirenyatwa Hospital have been down for the past few years which has resulted in cancer patients dying without treatment.
In an interview with journalists following the donation of cancer drugs worth US$50 000 by CABS, Pick n Pay in partnership with the Cancer Association of Zimbabwe on Tuesday, Mutizira said:

As you know we have had a challenge with our radiotherapy equipment for a while but we are thankful that the engineers who are meant to come to fix our machines came for the initial assessments to see what needs to be fixed, what supplies they need to buy to fix these machines.
So they have done their initial assessment and they will be coming back soon to fix the machines so we are looking forward to our radiotherapy machines being up and running very soon.

She said the chemotherapy drugs donated will go a long way in treating common cancers. Said Mutizira:

These drugs are chemotherapy drugs. These are drugs we commonly administer to most of our cancer patients so usually, we have a challenge of our patients not being able to afford these drugs such that it leaves us in a difficult situation where we are not able to deliver the treatment that we wish to give to our patients.
With the availability of these drugs where our patients are not going to be buying these drugs since it’s a donation, it will make our job a lot easier because then we are guaranteed that our patients will be able to receive the treatment we prescribe.

Reports suggest there is only one functional radiotherapy machine in Zimbabwe and it is privately owned and this has forced cancer patients to seek treatment outside the country.

Work To Fix Cancer Machines At Parirenyatwa Hospital Commences

VIVAT Health Solutions, a healthcare solutions provider, on Saturday held its second edition of “Mountain Hiking Experience” at Matobo National Park.
More than 200 people attended the event which is meant to foster healthy habits.
Speaking at the event, VIVAT Health Solutions group managing director Thembelihle Mloyi-Ncube urged people to regularly undergo cancer screening to avoid late detection of the disease. She was quoted by the <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/southerneye/local/article/200017161/go-for-regular-cancer-screening">Southern Eye</a> as saying:

Today, we just came together to celebrate our health and to say: “Look, let’s go hiking together and let’s have fun.”
We believe that a good life (is only possible) if you have good health.
So we always talk about doing your preventative tests. Do your screening checks every year, please do your screening.
The cancers are increasing, so do general checks to avoid late detection of deadly medical conditions and diseases.

The healthcare solutions provider held the event through its flagship medical aid scheme Bon Vie.
The event was sponsored by Zibuko Capital, Pacific Cigarette Company, Nyaradzo Group, Spar and Exide, among others.
Hikers were treated to free medical services including HIV tests.
Mloyi-Ncube said the first hiking event was held in 2022 and was attended by 90 people. It was held at Domboshava Hills, Mashonaland East province.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for nearly 10 million deaths in 2020, or nearly one in six deaths.

"Go For Regular Cancer Screening"

The Ministry of Health and Childcare has banned the sale and distribution of Johnson and Johnson baby powder in the country and ordered the destruction of the product following findings it caused cancer.
In a memorandum dated 24 May 2023 and addressed to all Provincial Medical Directors (PMDs), the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary Air Commodore Jasper Chimedza ordered the products to be destroyed. He wrote:

On 18 April 2023, an American television channel, Consumer News and Business Channel (CNBC) reported that Johnson and Johnson, an American multinational corporation, had assumed the liability to pay eight point nine billion United States Dollars (US$8.9 billion) to the medical industry in compensation over allegations that the company’s baby powder was causing cancer.
Research by the American Academy of Paediatrics unearthed that the talc used in the production of the baby powder was highly toxic due to contamination with carcinogen asbestos.
Tanzania Bureau of Standards on the 19th of April 2023, banned the importation and distribution and sale of Johnson and Johnson’s baby powder containing the talc ingredient.
The product is still popular in South Africa amid indications that most consumers are unaware of its potential risks.
Given the significant importation of health products by Zimbabwe from South Africa, there is a high risk that the contaminated baby powder could still be finding its way into the Zimbabwean market.
Ministry of Health and Child Care is banning the importation and distribution and sale of Johnson and Johnson’s baby powder containing the talc ingredient with immediate effect.
Environmental Health Officers and Technicians are advised to remove all Johnson and Johnson’s baby powder containing the talc ingredient from the market.
Inspectors are advised to document their findings and the products must be destroyed or recalled to the manufacturers.

Zimbabwe Bans Cancer Causing Johnson And Johnson Baby Powder

Doctors at Mpilo Central Hospital on Wednesday removed a tumour weighing 30kg from the belly of a 39-year-old mother of seven, Portia Gowero.
The growth, which Gowero lived with for two years, accounted for two-thirds of her actual weight by the time it was finally removed.
A team of 10 medical practitioners led by renowned gynaecologist Professor Solwayo Ngwenya successfully removed the tumour from Gowero’s belly during a two-hour-long surgery at Mpilo Hospital on Wednesday.
The tumour had been growing inside her belly since February 2021.
Speaking to the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/30kg-tumour-removed-from-woman-at-mpilo/">Chronicle</a>, Mpilo Central Hospital chief medical officer Dr Narcisius Dzvanga confirmed that the tumour weighed 30kg. Said Dzvanga:

We have a female from Mutare who was struggling with a growth in her tummy. This was operated on Wednesday and a 30kg mass was removed from her tummy.
It was quite a big operation and went on very well. It was remarkable work done by our staff members led by Professor Solwayo Ngwenya himself and I would like to congratulate my staff for doing such a successful operation despite the complications.

Gowero, who is stable and recovering at Mpilo, said when the tumour started developing she never took it seriously as she suspected that she was carrying her eighth child. She said:
<blockquote>
I was breastfeeding my seventh child in February 2021 when I noticed that my tummy was growing.
I had to wean her thinking it was another pregnancy only to be told two months later that there was no baby.
I would feel a heavy weight on my tummy and this thing continued to grow until it affected my breathing.
At first, I went to Mutare Hospital with the hope that they would help me but sadly I did not get help and the tumour kept growing daily.
I was transferred to Parirenyatwa in Harare with no luck until I resolved to seek spiritual help from prophets who saw me sell every valuable possession including 15 goats, two cows, a solar system and household property just to get answers.
</blockquote>
Gowero said she decided to visit her sisters who stay in Bulawayo after some of her relatives in Mutare started treating her as an outcast. She said:
<blockquote>
I live off peasant farming and I was struggling to work in the fields which also affected me.
I was always in distress and carried this tumour for two years and five months.
I lost a lot of property trying to find answers until I decided to visit my siblings who stay in Bulawayo as I was being ill-treated.
My sisters then brought me to Mpilo and I was lucky that on April 1 I found Professor Ngwenya doing rounds and it was decided that I be admitted and monitored to diagnose the problem.
When they decided I had to be operated they highlighted that I need a blood transfusion and we struggled to get three pints as my blood group is not easily accessible.
</blockquote>
Gowero added that after weeks of getting medical attention and sessions of blood transfusion, doctors said she was ready for an operation.
Mpilo public relations officer Sister Norma Mabhena said the Gowero first came to the hospital, she was weighing a total of 75kg and was struggling to walk, eat and breathe properly.
She thanked the Government whose initiatives ensured that Gowero had access to blood for free. Added Sr Mabhena:

We had two surgeons including Professor Ngwenya who was the team leader, two anaesthetists, six nurses, and several healthcare workers in and outside the theatre working flat out during the two-hour-long major operation.
I think we last had this kind of surgery years ago when a team of our staff members operated on a woman who had a cyst weighing 25kg.
</blockquote>
Sr Mabhena said Gowero bled a lot during surgery and so far the cause of the tumour hasn’t been established.
Meanwhile, in 2008, another woman had a 25kg big cyst removed from her womb at Mpilo Central Hospital.
The team which operated on the woman was also led by Professor Ngwenya then.

UPDATED: Doctors At Mpilo Hospital Remove 30kg Tumour From Woman (39)

Doctors at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo have successfully removed a tumour weighing about 30kgs from a 39-year-old old woman’s belly.
Portia Gowero told the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/30kg-tumour-removed-from-woman-at-mpilo/">Chronicle</a> that she had lived with the growth for two years and spent all her possessions trying to find a cure for the tumour.
Gowero, a mother of seven, had been to Mutare Provincial Hospital and Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals seeking medical attention but could not be cured.
She underwent a two-hour-long surgery to remove the tumour at Mpilo on Wednesday.
A team of 10 medical practitioners managed to remove the tumour which has been growing since February 2021.
Gowero said when the tumour started developing, she never took it seriously as she suspected that she was carrying her eighth child.
The <a href="https://www.cancer.org.au/cancer-information/types-of-cancer/stomach-cancer">Cancer Council</a> says tumours can begin anywhere in the stomach but most begin in the glandular tissue on the stomach’s inner surface.
Below are some of the stomach cancer signs and symptoms:

<li>a sense of fullness, even after a small meal</li>

Doctors At Mpilo Hospital Remove 30kg Tumour From Woman (39)

Former Zimbabwean cricketer and cricket coach Heath Streak is battling cancer, his family has confirmed.
On Saturday, former Minister of Education, David Coltart who is an avid cricket fan, said, in a post on Twitter that Streak was “extremely ill and needs our prayers.”
Sean Williams, a current Zimbabwe cricketer and a close friend of Streak told Cricbuzz on Saturday <a href="https://www.sacricketmag.com/former-zimbabwe-captain-battling-cancer/">said</a>:

Heath has colon and liver cancer (Stage 4). All I know at this stage is Heath’s immediate family was called to go to him in South Africa and I am not sure of any details thereof.
I did message Heath and he did respond but I’m sure at this stage the family will want privacy.
It sounds like the cancer is spreading pretty quickly cause last week he was fishing.
Heath is my mentor and did a lot of good things for a lot of people and basically saved my life and career. We just pray he will be OK.

In a statement, Streak’s family said the former cricketer is undergoing treatment in South Africa and asked for privacy. Reads the statement:

Heath has cancer and is undergoing treatment under one of the most respected oncologists in South Africa.
He remains in good spirits and will continue to fight this disease in a similar vein to that which his opponents faced during his revered days on the cricket field.
The family hopes that you understand and respect their wish for this to remain a private family matter, and thank you for your prayers and good wishes.
There will be no further official statements regarding his health at this time. Any news that becomes public should be regarded as rumour.

Streak played for and captained the Zimbabwe national cricket team and by his statistical record, he is the best bowler to have played for Zimbabwe.
He is the all-time leading wicket-taker for Zimbabwe in Test cricket with 216 wickets and in ODI cricket with 239 wickets.
Streak retired from international cricket in October 2005 to become captain of Warwickshire County Cricket Club having previously played county cricket for Hampshire in the United Kingdom.
In 2021, Streak was banned for eight years after being charged with multiple breaches of the International Cricket Council (ICC)’s anti-corruption code.
Streak committed the offences during his role as coach of Zimbabwe and various domestic teams around the world.

Health Streak Battling Cancer

Actress and media personality <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Tinopona_Katsande">Tinopona Katsande</a> says her heart is “sore” and her mind “fuzzy” as she undergoes treatment for cervical cancer.
Tin Tin, as she is also known by her fans, was diagnosed with cancer in 2022 and has been undergoing chemotherapy since then.
On Sunday, Katsande announced that starting this week, she will be undergoing radiotherapy, another cancer treatment regimen.
Chemotherapy is a cancer treatment where medicine is used to kill cancer cells, while radiotherapy is a type of cancer treatment that uses beams of intense energy to kill cancer cells. Posting on her Facebook page on Sunday, Tino said:

Today is a tough day for me. Radiotherapy is starting this week. I’ve decided to shave my head before I HAVE to shave it. My heart is sore. My mind is fuzzy.
Imagine, I’ve often shaved my head over the years in solidarity with cancer friends who were survivors/ fighters or had succumbed to it, OR I previously shaved my head for fashion chakuti chakuti. Whatever the reason, it was BY CHOICE.
NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS DID I THINK I WOULD BE FORCED TO DO SO LIKE IS HAPPENING NOW.
Emotionally and mentally so far I felt I was doing really great with the chemo. I’ve been keeping positive and REFUSING for tuma nyaya nyaya to stress me.
I’ve been keeping my mind busy, my body as healthy as I can, and my energy up up…
… with radiotherapy starting this week I feel like I’ve just been dealt the diagnosis again… Hameno, It’s a bit difficult for me to articulate into words right now…

Last year, Tin Tin admitted that death was her first thought when she first received her diagnosis of cervical cancer.
She added she became hopeful when doctors assured her that the disease could be treated as it had been identified at an early stage.

Tino Katsande To Undergo Radiotherapy As She Battles Cancer

The Deputy Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Kindness Paradza has called on men to get tested for breast cancer.
Breast cancer is most often found in women, but it can form in men’s breast tissues, especially in older men.
Studies have shown that 1 out of every 100 breast cancers diagnosed in the United States is found in a man.
Addressing journalists on Wednesday, 26 October at a breast cancer awareness and screening programme for media practitioners, Paradza said:

I want to encourage all men to get breast cancer screening because it’s men who tend to believe that breast cancer is only for women. Screening is done for free. You may not know that you have cancer.
</blockquote>
Paradza also challenged journalists to write more stories about breast cancer and raise awareness.
The event was organised by the Premier Service Medical Aid Society (PSMAS) and included free testing for breast cancer, glucose, blood pressure and Body Mass Index (BMI) for journalists.

Men Urged To Get Checked For Breast Cancer

Former Deputy Prime Minister Thokozani Khupe has urged both men and women to get screened for breast cancer as early detection and treatment boosts one’s chances of survival.
Khupe made the call as the world dedicates the rest of October to raising awareness on breast cancer.
The former trade unionist was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2011 and underwent treatment and surgery which cost her one of her breasts.
In 2021, Khupe founded the Thokozani Khupe Cancer Foundation (TKCF) to raise awareness on cancer. She said:

It is therefore important to note that men are affected and hence the need for both sexes to do screening and self-examination. Early detection of cancer saves lives.
I am a living testimony of that. I was diagnosed 11 years ago but after treatment, I am cured and still alive even today.
The TKCF turns 10 years old this October as it was launched on the 24th of October 2012. 
We continue to advocate for the establishment of cancer screening and treatment facilities in all the 1 958 wards in Zimbabwe as well as that cancer screening and treatment must be available, affordable and accessible taking into consideration that we have only two hospitals catering for cancer.

Khupe called for the establishment of a Cancer Levy in line with the Aids Levy to make cancer treatment available, accessible and affordable for all Zimbabweans. She added:

The sad reality is, women only discover that they have breast cancer when their cancer is at stage three or four, due to a lack of awareness and barriers to health services. 
Stages three and four are advanced stages such that very little can be done.

Thokozani Khupe Urges Men To Get Screened For Breast Cancer

The Zimbabwe Red Cross Society (ZRCS) has set up free prostate and cervical cancer screening booths at the Harare Agricultural Showgrounds.
ZRCS spokesperson Stambuli Kim said the free cancer screening service is aimed at encouraging early diagnosis. Said Stambuli:

So early diagnosis becomes critical in arresting the malignancy and that is why the ZRCS stepped up to plug the gap complementing government efforts to encourage and populate early diagnosis.

Stambuli added that ZRCS medical teams will also be offering other free services like blood sugar and blood pressure checks as well as COVID-19 vaccination.
ZRCS secretary-general Elias Hwenga said that through their Restoring Family Links programme team, they are tagging children at entry points to help parents locate their children if they get lost during the show.
In 2011, a three-year-old, Given Flint Matapure went missing during the show only for his remains to be found later within the premises.

Red Cross Offers Free Cancer Screening At Harare Agric Show

A cancer patient on Tuesday petitioned Parliament to pass a law that will address cancer as an emergency national health burden.
Nyasha Mpame submitted the petition while appearing before the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Health led by Ruth Labode (MDC Alliance). She said:

There is apathy in research and investment into cancer and a national cancer Act will provide for the appointment of a cancer board, which can assist in collaborations with the Ministry of Health and Child Care, private players and other stakeholders in implementing cancer programmes, facilitating and funding research into cancer treatments, including in alternative medicine.
</blockquote>
There are only two public hospitals with the capacity to offer radiotherapy cancer treatment in the country, that is, Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals in Harare and Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo.
However, the radiotherapy cancer machines at the two institutions are reportedly breaking down constantly. Said Mpame:

Compel the Ministry of Health and Child Care to have the radiotherapy machines at Mpilo and Parirenyatwa hospitals repaired urgently and to have a permanent maintenance solution by year-end.
Invite and receive representations from relevant stakeholders and interested parties to contribute towards the achievement of a permanent solution not only with regard to the radiotherapy machines at the two public hospitals but in other areas of cancer care in Zimbabwe.
Oblige the Ministry of Health and Child Care to implement the National Cancer Prevention and Control Strategy for Zimbabwe.

According to the Zimbabwe Cancer Registry 2017 annual report released in 2020, the latest data available, the country recorded 7 659 new cancer cases in 2017.
Of these cases, 42.7% were male, and female 57.3% were female.
According to the report, cervix uteri accounted for 20% of the recorded cases, followed by prostate cancer 10%, breast cancer 8%, Kaposi’s sarcoma 5%, non-Hodgkin lymphoma 5%, colo-rectal 4% and liver 3%.
Meanwhile, Mpame implored authorities to decentralise cancer treatment services to all parts of the country.

Cancer Patient Petitions Parliament To Enact National Cancer Act

Zimpapers Television Network (ZTN) journalist Robert Mukondiwa has bemoaned the sorry state of cancer treatment in Zimbabwe following the death of stand-up comedian Clive Chigubhu from the disease.
Chigubhu passed away on Wednesday, 27 April around 5 AM after he was diagnosed with Diffuse Large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL), a type of cancer.
DLBCL is a type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), a cancer of the lymphatic system.
Mukondiwa also lost his mother to the disease after she failed to get treatment at local hospitals.
In a post on his Facebook page, Mukondiwa said Chigubhu, just like thousands of dead Zimbabweans, died nowhere near a radiotherapy machine. He wrote:

It begins with a C. It isn’t Clive or Chigubu. It’s cancer. That he was in pain and couldn’t get medical attention should never escape our minds.
That he had been booked for an appointment and arrived to see the place closed should be scandalous to ‘normal’ people in ‘normal’ circumstances.
Early detection where no interventions exist doesn’t save lives, it is a death sentence.
That he fell ill and could only see the ENT (ear, nose and throat specialist) on a Friday because they are available one day a week should anger you….but it doesn’t. Because death by cancer is not a priority.
Medical equipment to give cancer patients a fighting chance is not important, is it?
Clive has just made his final joke and it’s that our health system (system indeed) is itself a joke. But nobody is laughing.
His death won’t move anyone into action. He’s not a priority. He’s just another young Zimbabwean whose life has been cut short by cancer.
He has ceased to be Clive and become a statistic. Another brick in the wall.
I’d planned to see him on Thursday. To me, he was not just another Zimbabwean comedian. He was the best in the business by a country mile.
Now he has dropped the mic in the cruellest fashion and his most sadistic joke. He leaves a 5-year-old girl confused about being fatherless.
Now it is a funeral that I’ll have to attend. And like thousands of dead Zimbabweans he died nowhere near a radiotherapy machine.
An accident of geography found him being born in our piece of the world and like millions dead from cancer before him, we let him down. Clive; forgive us!

Mukondiwa Pays Tribute To Chigubhu, Bemoans Sorry State Of Cancer Treatment In Zimbabwe

Health worker and political commentator Setfree <a href="https://twitter.com/cdesetfree/status/1514937416716591108">Mafukidze says</a> Zimbabwe does not have a health minister and senior officials in the Ministry of Health and Childcare are not up to the task.
The current Minister of Health is Vice President Constantino Chiwenga who took over the portfolio in 2020 following the sacking of Obadiah Moyo.
Mafukidze made the remarks in response to exchanges between Finance and Economic Affairs Minister Mthuli Ncube and opposition MPs during a Question and Answer session in the National Assembly over the state of cancer treatment in Zimbabwe.
In his responses, Ncube said the funds to purchase cancer machines are available and Treasury is waiting for the Ministry of Health to make requests. Read the extract below:
HON. MATSUNGA: Thank you, Mr Speaker Sir. My question is directed to the Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Hon. Minister Ncube. I understand the Government had said that it will purchase radiotherapy machines that will help those who are living with cancer.
As you all know, cancer knows no age; infants in hospitals are being diagnosed with cancer.
How far has the Government gone with purchasing those radiotherapy machines that will help Zimbabwean citizens together with those that I lead in Mufakose Constituency?
THE MINISTER OF FINANCE AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT (HON. PROF. M. NCUBE): Thank you very much, Mr Speaker Sir. I thank the Hon. Member for that very important question regarding the purchase of machines for assisting our cancer patients.
We stand ready, with the resources to purchase the equipment. What is going on in the Ministry of Health and Child Care is that they are scoping the kind of demand for this equipment but we stand ready. We have adequate resources to equip our critical hospitals.
For example, if you go to Harare South where we just completed the development of a new medium-sized hospital.
We are determined to keep equipping our hospitals and build new hospitals. So the issue really is not one of the resources but just planning and we are working with the Ministry of Health and Child Care to roll out the acquisition of this cancer equipment. Thank you.
HON. MATSUNGA: My question was not concerning Harare Hospital because it is not functioning well due to a shortage of nurses.
I am asking concerning radiotherapy machines that will help those who are suffering from cancer.
Our economy is in a bad state that it cannot allow people to access health facilities from other countries.
I am asking about machines so that we do not have to look for health facilities in other countries for radiotherapy treatment.
I am not asking about hospitals in Harare, there are a lot of hospitals. I am specifically on radiotherapy machines.
HON. PROF. M. NCUBE: Thank you very much, Mr Speaker Sir. I thank the Hon. Member for that impassioned question once again.
As I said earlier, we have the resources to purchase the equipment. We are going through a scoping exercise with the Ministry of Health and Child Care to purchase such equipment.
We will update the Hon. Member as we progress with the programme of purchasing that equipment. I thank you.
HON. MARKHAM: Thank you, Mr Speaker Sir. Mr Speaker on the supplementary question, the issue is not only the machines.
The issue is running the machines – simple blood tests for cancer cannot be done in this country at the moment.
There are a lot of people who are sending their blood samples to South Africa for diagnosis.
Can the Hon. Minister assure the House that something concrete will happen in the next couple of months?
HON. PROF. M. NCUBE: Thank you, Hon. Markham, you asked three questions. I can assure you that as Government, we stand ready to support whatever is required in terms of testing for blood services.
As I said, we always wait for line ministries to make requests and we have the resources for such services and it is not difficult.

"Zimbabwe Has No Health Minister"

Recently, award-winning journalist, Hopewell Chin’ono, claimed that the country’s public hospitals don’t have a single working radiotherapy cancer machine.
Chin’ono’s assertion did not go down well with pro-government activists on Twitter who tried to paint a rosy picture about the state of cancer treatment in Zimbabwe.
They accused Chin’ono of being unpatriotic and making unfounded allegations meant to tarnish the image of the country.
Another journalist, Robert Mukondiwaa, who works for Zimpapers Television Network (ZTN), has criticised people who are making light of the crisis facing the country as far as cancer treatment is concerned.
Mukondiwa said he not only lost his mother to the disease but also saw several people gradually waste away due to cancer. Pindula News  publishes Mukondiwa’s narration of his experiences below:

Exactly two years ago, I lost this awesome soul to breast cancer which had spread to the lungs. April 11 of 2020.
It was a particularly painful loss not because she is my best friend and mother but for so many other reasons.
At the very top is the fact that we had a diagnosis that shocked doctors. Mum was living in the rurals but had self-diagnosed and the doctor said it was one of the earliest detections he had ever seen. And for a rural woman to frequently self-test impressed him.
So they say early detection saves lives? Not in Zimbabwe. We took her for a mastectomy and had the breast removed in little time.
There was hardly any equipment but I suppose my joy came from the doctors and Parirenyatwa Hospital staff who under tough conditions were ever pleasant, loving and helpful.
Then she had to go for chemotherapy. That was painful as I could hardly afford it. But my workmates would always help.
Michelle Hakata was my boss and Robin Chaibva was my best friend who would always help. I could say three-quarters of the chemo was footed by Michelle.
Then we needed radiotherapy. The cancer radiotherapy machines now came into play or didn’t.
For the entire four years, she never got ONE single session. Not ONE. Mum would get the bus from Muzarabani and all the time she would have to cancel because every time the machine was down.
She was then told to try going to Mpilo Hospital in Bulawayo. Yes; 206 kilometres from Muzarabani to Harare and an additional 450km give or take to Bulawayo.
But we could squeeze that in because Bulawayo is home and we have family there. What about other Zimbabweans who couldn’t afford that?
Well anyway, when we planned that, the machine at Mpilo also broke down. So, we had to go for option three which was to get her to South Africa for sessions and then bring her back home after that.
She needed a passport. I don’t need to explain what that means to any Zimbabwean. And so, a few years later cancer returned and it was belligerently mad.
And so began our three-month journey to losing her. In and out of Parirenytatwa. Squealing as she got punctured with little anaesthetic in order to drain her flooded lungs.
Having her look at her arms as they became thin and emaciated and say “Robby mwanangu, pachine hupenyu ipapa?” But I’d always tried to cheer her up.
Then one day I had her back at home and brought her a wheelchair as she could not walk easily. It was a Thursday.
I looked at her during lunch break. I had moved out of home as I was working and didn’t want to risk giving her other diseases since COVID-19 had just set in.
I told myself I didn’t want to see her like that again. I skipped visiting her on the Friday.
She wasn’t in pain but she was losing the battle. Then on the Saturday, I got the call. I broke down. I’ve never recovered.
I’ve hardly ever written exactly what happened those weeks. And those four years. I’ve actually decided to write this without any emotion because had I put in the emotion, I’d have made a lot of enemies and called out a lot of idiots.
When you talk about cancer machines and treatment you are talking about statistics. I’m not. I’m talking about the woman in the ward opposite mum’s who died and we had to lie to mum that she had been transferred so I wouldn’t upset her. That woman was 34.
Or my workmate, the lovely Sihle Mkondo, who was my mum’s support system. Sihle died a year and a half after my mother.
Or little Ernest. Aged 13. He was in the ward with my mum who he called gogo. He called me Robbie. I thought with my greying beard he would call me mukoma.
No such luck. It was Robbie. He went on to die aged 14, a year after mum and a few months before Sihle.
When I went to see him last, he was lying in the same bed my mother had died in and the next day my niece Maud called me and said: “We have lost the battle.”
At 14 we had lost Ernest. I went to the hospital and saw him lying in the sideward where my mother used to stay.
I talked to him. To his corpse. Held his forehead. Told him he was loved and that he had rested. You know what?
The previous day when I last saw him, I had told Maud: “Ernest is dying either tonight or tomorrow morning. I don’t want to see him in pain so only call me when he has rested.”
When you start accepting death like that, know that things are no longer normal. So go ahead. Argue back and forth about the state of cancer equipment and treatment in Zimbabwe. Defend as much as you will.
Just know that where I am, I am not only praying for cancer radiotherapy machines in Zimbabwe. I am praying that even the mother of the fool who is playing with such issues never gets to get cancer and experience the pain I went through.
When I see people touting themselves as cancer ambassadors what-what, I just look and say forgive these fools.
With cancer, this is personal. What I can promise you though is look out for a book on the five-year battle I had with cancer alongside mum, Sihle and Ernest. Perhaps a ‘GoFundMe’ to tell the real story of such fights?
To some of you, this is defending your territory and scoring political points. To me, it is reliving my fight with my best friend. Senzeni.
It has been two years. You are loved. By the way – nanhasi mushini wakafa mhamha. Up to this day, the cancer radiotherapy machine is dead! (Teary so I will end here…for now!)

Journalist Robert Mukondiwa Speaks Out On The State Of Cancer Treatment In Zimbabwe | Full Statement

A radiographer at one of the country’s major hospitals Adriana Rutendo Mafukidze Zanga said that linear accelerators (devices most commonly used for external beam radiation treatments for patients with cancer) at government hospitals are not working.
Posting on Twitter on Saturday, Zanga said the last functioning linear accelerator (linac) broke down in January when there was already a huge backlog due to previous long machine downtimes. <a href="https://twitter.com/DriaRosani/status/1512924722970902534">She wrote:</a>

Thank you. My fellow radiation therapists and I are hoping for the repair of ALL the linear accelerators (linac) at both govt institutions.
Before the last functioning linac broke down in January we already had a huge backlog due to previous long machine downtimes.

There have been conflicting claims on social media platforms about the state of cancer treatment in Zimbabwe.
Award-winning journalist, Hopewell Chin’ono, last week claimed that the country’s public hospitals don’t have a single working radiotherapy cancer machine. Chin’ono <a href="https://twitter.com/daddyhope/status/1510633452189720579">tweeted:</a>

Farai Hativagoni died today from cancer because Zimbabwe’s public hospitals don’t have a single working radiotherapy cancer machine.
There are real people with names who are dying daily because Mnangagwa’s regime has refused to care about cancer patients due to LOOTING.
</blockquote>
However, pro-Government activists on Twitter have accused Chin’ono of lying and making unfounded and meant to tarnish the image of the country.
In a post on Facebook on 27 January this year, Zanga said asked a rhetorical question. She said:

Is a DOG in Alabama more likely to receive Radiotherapy than our children with cancer in Harare?!!!!!
</blockquote>
In another post the following day, Zanga said the country needs lasting solutions to the frequent breakdowns of cancer machines.
She also implored churches, universities, healthcare funders, civil society, everyone across the political divide, banks, and philanthropists, among other stakeholders to work together to find a solution to the crisis. She said:

In my post yesterday when I posed the question, “Is a dog in Alabama more likely to receive Radiotherapy than our children in Harare”, something in me snapped.
As a mother myself, I did not want to imagine what it feels like to be stuck with a child with cancer at home due to a machine breakdown.
I hence decided that as a citizen and a cancer caregiver I cannot keep on venting without offering solutions.
As a cancer caregiver, I am also tired of being heartbroken by these episodes that I have experienced for the 12 years I have served my community.
This must be everyone’s concern – churches, universities, healthcare funders, civil society, everyone across the political divide, banks, philanthropists etc.
The cancer burden is growing and access to care must urgently be everyone’s baby
Here are my 3 points :
1. As individuals and corporates we have been doing well to raise cancer awareness through walks etc. This year’s theme for World Cancer Day is “Close the care gap”.
It is therefore my humble request for corporates and individuals to organise around this theme. Let’s talk about access to Radiotherapy, Chemotherapy, Surgery, Counseling, Nutrition etc for cancer patients this year.
Try to actively seek out where the gaps in cancer care are and seek ways to close these.
Public Relations Officers in public sector hospitals are able to assist with information as well as guidance in initiatives you may want to engage in.
A tour of the Radiotherapy and Oncology facilities can be requested. 
2. The proposed cancer levy motioned in parliament by Dr Khupe did not sail through due to reasons I do not have the full knowledge and expertise to fully explain BUT according to Dr Ngwaru in the Herald article titled “Parly mulls cancer levy” he says, “As it stands about 50 per cent of cancer diseases are an overlap from HIV. What it means is that the burden of cancer must be the burden of HIV.”
I agree with the above statement by Dr Ngwaru of the National Cancer Alliance of Zimbabwe (NCAZ).
What can be done for our Radiotherapy Centres to benefit from the AIDS levy? Can a cancer council be set up which is directly funded by the National AIDS Council?  If this is not feasible/practical please offer suggestions. 
3. There is a growing sentiment that Radiotherapy and Oncology Centres must stand alone and be funded directly by Treasury because of the high cost of purchase and maintenance of linear accelerators which may exceed hospital and Ministry budgets.

Chin'ono Sparks Debate On State Of Cancer Treatment In Zimbabwe

A Zimbabwean woman believed to be in her forties was arrested at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai, India, on Saturday night for smuggling heroin.
The airport customs officials arrested the woman for trying to smuggle heroin and methamphetamine worth close to ₹60 crores to India.
The woman has been identified as Harare resident Rosie Diamon, a cancer patient believed to be from a poor background.
She had arrived from Harare to Mumbai via Kigali on Saturday by RwandAir flight WB-500.
An official from the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU), Mumbai, confirmed the arrest. Said the official:

The examination of the baggage resulted in the recovery of 7,006 grams of yellowish powder tested as “Heroin” and 1,480 grams white crystal granules tested to contain a combination of Heroin and ‘Methamp’ (short form of Methamphetamine). The said drugs were subsequently seized.
</blockquote>
The official added that the seized drugs collectively weighed 8.486kg and are worth approximately ₹59,40,20,000 in the illicit market.
The drugs were reportedly concealed inside the trolley bag, in the executive bag and two file folders.
During questioning, the Zimbabwean woman informed investigators that the drugs were handed over to her in Harare and the same were to be delivered in New Delhi.
She said after reaching Mumbai, she was supposed to travel to New Delhi by train a few days later.
This was to ensure minimum risk of travelling with contraband to the capital.
An AUI officer said the suspect was offered free medical treatment in India in lieu of trafficking drugs.
She now faces a sentence of 20 years.
The Zimbabwean woman claimed that she was told that the person who was supposed to receive the delivery of the contraband would himself contact her on reaching Delhi.
Customs officers were reportedly scanning her phone and were trying to find out details of her associates.
The suspect has been to India before. She visited the country in 2019 but she did not smuggle any contraband at the time.
Diamon was charged under relevant sections of the Customs Act for smuggling drugs.
She appeared in court and was remanded in judicial custody to 25 February.
After her RT-PCR test, she would be lodged in jail.

Zimbabwean Cancer Patient Arrested In India For Smuggling Illicit Drugs

Zexie Manatsa has been diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, the legendary musician revealed in a post on Facebook.
Multiple myeloma is a cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell. It can cause damage to the bones, immune system and kidneys.
The musician who nurtured a lot of musicians including the late Oliver Mtukudzi and Alick Macheso made the announcement on Thursday morning.
Manatsa said he would be taking a break to be with family as he focuses on his health. He said:

My wonderful family, friends and fans, today I would like to let you all know that I have recently been diagnosed with cancer known as Multiple Myeloma.
With guidance from medical professionals and the support of my family, I am currently undergoing treatment to manage the condition.

I love and thank you all for your never-ending love and support.

Musician Zexie Manatsa Diagnosed With Cancer

A man from Hwange is appealing for financial assistance for his 6-year-old son to undergo treatment for cancer of the eye.
Tanyala Ncube, originally from Lusulu in Binga, says his son, Nhlalwenhle, was diagnosed with cancer on his left eye in February this year, after developing symptoms the previous month.
He said the boy has been receiving treatment at Mpilo Central Hospital since February and has also been undergoing some tests.
Ncube said they were getting financial assistance from some well-wishers for Nhlalwenhle’s treatment until June this year when the sponsors said they were no longer in a position to continue assisting.

Hwange Man Seeks Help For Son (6) Diagnosed With Cancer Of The Eye

Radiation therapy machines have broken down at Bulawayo’s Mpilo Central Hospital, putting at risk the lives of over 100 cancer patients on a waiting list for treatment.
Patients told ZimLive that the hospital has two linear accelerators and a third machine for cervical cancer.
One of the two linear accelerators which direct high-energy beams of radiation into a patient’s body to kill cancer cells has been out of service for months, and the other broke down on 6 May, just over a month after it was repaired.
In an emailed response to ZimLive, acting Mpilo Hospital CEO Professor Solwayo Ngwenya confirmed their machines had broken down. He said:
<blockquote>Please note that the machines are very sensitive and they break down constantly.
This also happens to machines in Harare and we have treated patients from there when their machines break down.
The government is working very hard to fix the latest problems. This time it is not the issue of the physicist.</blockquote>
At one point the hospital had no physicist to carry out the treatment until one was seconded from Harare. Mpilo’s last two physicists had left for the United Kingdom.
Ngwenya said Zimbabwe currently had no engineers who can fix the machines and they have to fly in engineers from South Africa to do the repairs.
On Tuesday, shocking pictures taken by doctors emerged showing nurses carrying patients up a staircase because lifts were not working.
Ngwenya blamed power outages, saying the hospital doesn’t have a dedicated power supply from ZESA. He said:
<blockquote>The pictures you refer to were taken on Monday. ZESA was said to be doing a fault repair in the neighbouring suburbs so they cut power off most of the day.
We used diesel generators to power lifesaving equipment, but unfortunately, the lift is not powered by the generators.
We have been having these power cuts for some time now. We used to have a dedicated power supply from ZESA as a major strategic hospital.
Unfortunately, we don’t have any dedicated line anymore and we continue to be at the mercy of power faults and cuts.
We feel the pain and inconvenience that the staff and patients and their relatives have to go through.
We hope that these issues will be attended to soon by the relevant authorities.</blockquote>

Mpilo Hospital Awaits SA Engineers To Repair Cancer Machines

Cancer patients in Zimbabwe are faced with a hard time due to an acute shortage of drugs for curative treatment including chemotherapy as well as palliative care medication which is used to relieve pain.
One of the most pain-killing drugs for cancer patients is morphine, an effective drug that is used to manage severe pain among people living with advanced HIV and cancers including, among others, breast, cervical, bowel, prostate, pancreatic and blood cancers.
In an interview with The Sunday News, Island Hospice palliative care physician Dr Dickson Chifamba said there was an erratic supply of morphine and other palliative care drugs. Dr Chifamba stated:
<blockquote>The shortage of palliative care drugs such as morphine has really affected most patients, especially the ones with co-morbidities as some have concocted problems, whether it’s hypertension or diabetes.
Last year because of the lockdown, it has been a big challenge to visit those patients so we were seeing the critical ones.
… When you talk of morphine you are talking of opioids and this is what we use generally for severe pain.
But if you were in other well-resourced countries, you would find out that there are many different formulations of opioids where morphine is one of them among others.
However, in our country, the most readily available is morphine which is in tablet form and it can come as short-acting and long-acting, this is the one readily available if and when it available.</blockquote>
Dr Chifamba said in terms of increasing hours between dosages as what most cancer patients were doing, it had detrimental effects. He added:
<blockquote>In terms of pain control, it really affects them quite a lot because remember when you have pain a number of things also follow, you cannot sleep well, you cannot eat well and in itself, if the pain becomes unresolved it can suppress your immunity because it may cause some hormonal disturbances.
This results in certain hormones associated with stress increasing and if the pain persists, they can become intractable.
As well as the pain which even by the time you want to treat it, becomes so difficult to treat and it can actually lead to premature death.</blockquote>

Shortage Of Morphine Worsens Plight Of Cancer Patients

Doctors at a hospital in Cornwall in the United Kingdom believe COVID-19 helped a <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/09/22/mugabe-died-of-cancer-report/">61-year-old man</a> who had recently been diagnosed with cancer to heal from the complication.
During a follow-up check on the cancer patient, doctors found that the tumours, which scans just a few weeks earlier revealed were littering his torso, had almost gone.
The patient had not yet started chemotherapy for the disease, called Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of blood cancer, therefore, the sudden disappearance of the cancerous cells was a complete mystery.

<div class="adHolder molads_inread_player_top" id="inread_player_top">It was a few weeks later that a CT scan to check his cancer revealed it had all but gone prompting his doctors to conclude that Covid-19 had destroyed his cancer by firing up his immune system enough to both see off the virus and to destroy malignant cells.</div>
In a published report, Dr Sarah Challoner, one of the doctors treating cancer at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro, said she believes that infection-fighting cells, called T-cells, fought the coronavirus and the cancer cells which they recognised as ‘foreign’. She said:

We think Covid-19 triggered an anti-tumour immune response.
</blockquote>
Meanwhile, Paul Hunter, a professor of medicine at the University of East Anglia warns cancer patients against deliberately exposing themselves to COVID-19 to get healed. Hunter said:
<blockquote>
The message for anyone with cancer is that, deliberately exposing yourself to Covid-19 in the hope it will heal you is much more likely to lead to your untimely demise than to a cure.
</blockquote>
There is also a case reported last August in the journal Acta Biomedica of a 20-year-old man with non-Hodgkin lymphoma who was also healed of cancer after contracting COVID-19.
In the report, doctors at Cremona Hospital in Italy reported that the patient’s cancer appeared unresponsive to chemotherapy or radiotherapy but a few weeks after testing positive for Covid-19 in early 2020, scans showed cancer had gone.
Another case was reported at the Humanitas Research Hospital in Milan, Italy in February in the European Journal of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging in which all signs of lymphoma rapidly disappeared in a 61-year-old man who caught Covid-19.
However, British experts stress that such cases of spontaneous remission are probably more likely to occur in blood cancers such as lymphoma than solid tumours, such as breast, lung or prostate.

Zimbabwean men have been encouraged to have s_x at least 21 times per month to reduce the chances of getting prostate cancer.
Speaking during a press conference by the National Aids Council (NAC) held in Chinhoyi, Cancer Association of Zimbabwe (CAZ) information officer Priscilla Mangwiro said scientists have discovered that s_xually inactive men are more prone to the disease. She said:
<blockquote>Prostate cancer is on the rise and besides encouraging men to eat healthy, we now encourage them to be s_xually active and at least have 21 (climaxes) in a month as discovered by researchers.
Twenty-one (climaxes) in a month can reduce the risk of prostate cancer by 33 percent as it may flush toxins out of the system.</blockquote>
Mangwiro, however, said that the discovery was not a license for men to be s_xually promiscuous.
She added that some of the major causes of cancers include excessive drinking of alcohol and the continuous consumption of meat.

Zimbabwean Men Urged To Have More S_x To Lower Prostate Cancer Risk

MDC founding member and aide to MDC Alliance president Nelson Chamisa, Thembiso Gobo has died.
Gobo, who was Kadoma Ward 13 Councillor, died at a Kadoma Hospital Wednesday nearly a year after she was diagnosed with cervical cancer.
In a statement, the MDC Alliance said the late Gobo was committed to democracy. The statement read:
<blockquote>Her commitment to democracy is beyond doubt. She survived Zanu PF violence in 2001 at Gokwe Town Office at the funeral of Vusimuzi Mukwela. She was arrested and detained several times in both the Midlands and Mashonaland West provinces.</blockquote>
Gobo was employed by the ZimCare Trust taking care of the mentally ill at Rubatsiro School in Kadoma.
She was the vice-chairperson for the Women’s Assembly in Kadoma at the time of her death.

Controversial businessman <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Wicknell_Chivayo">Wicknell Chivhayo</a> has forked out $16K to help a Gwanda man who needs the cash to undergo a lifesaving surgery.
Wicknell posted the news on social media and accompanied the post with receipts for his generous donation. Tweeted the businessman:

Zimbabwe Ranks 4th In Cancer Deaths In Africa

A columnist at the Daily News has urged Zimbabwe to try and live a lifestyle that helps fight cancer or keep cancer at bay as cancer cases in Zimbabwe increase. Writing for the publication the columnist said:
<blockquote>Travel to any corner in Harare. You will find the young and old drinking beer and eating roasted meat. Who does not want to live long? The trick to good health is good nutrition, exercise and regular medical check-ups. Following medical advice is of para- mount importance.
I am aware of the economic chal- lenges that the country is facing at the moment, but we need to take care of ourselves — let us visit health facilities for medical check-ups regularly even when we are not feeling sick. Let every woman have a breast examination and be taught how to self-examine her breasts. Let every man have a prostate cancer check-up.
