Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs minister, Ziyambi Ziyambi, has accused Joana Mamombe, Harare West legislator, of faking a mental illness to delay the finalisation of her several criminal cases.
Ziyambi made the remarks while presenting a statement during the country’s third cycle universal periodic review before the president of the Human Rights Council in Geneva.
He said Mamombe and her friends, Cecilia Chimbiri and Netsai Marova, formerly famously known as the MDC Alliance trio, were liars.
Ziyambi said their alleged forced disappearance does not fall under that category but could pass for an alleged abduction. He said:

This case was extensively investigated by the Zimbabwe Republic Police. The resultant police report revealed that their allegations were false and that they had staged the abductions in a bid to tarnish the image of the Government.
Consequently, they were charged and arraigned before the courts. Since the commencement of the court proceedings the three women have employed dilatory tactics to evade trial including faking mental health illness. One of them has since absconded to Europe and a warrant of arrest has since been issued against her. The remaining two have been granted bail and are currently out of custody.
If this matter is proved, it could perhaps assist to lessen the number of false abduction and disappearance claims levelled against the government which normally coincide with important international events.
</blockquote>
Mamombe and her friends are accused of faking an abduction to soil the government’s reputation, publishing falsehoods and also breaching COVID-19 regulations among other allegations.

Geneva: Ziyambi Tells Human Rights Council That Mamombe Faked Mental Illness, Staged Abduction

Cathy Buckle writing for The Zimbabwean narrated how  61 days after the lockdown started some civilians are still struggling to make ends meet as the government is yet to relax lockdown restrictions for informal traders and the continuation of human rights abuse in Zimbabwe:
<blockquote>Sixty-one days into Zimbabwe’s Covid 19 lockdown, I went into the supermarket early in the morning. There was thick mist and it was cold and muggy. The infrared forehead thermometer at the door wasn’t working (because it’s cold, the lady said) but masks were on and hands were squirted. I’d heard that prices had gone mad and so I knew that this would probably be “phone shopping” where I just take pictures of prices and do adding up as I try and  work out what I can afford to buy. I wasn’t alone in the adding up department. Two young men were going shelf to shelf to see what they could afford. The bag of chicken pieces was rejected with exclamations at the price; the tiny square of cheese was turned over and put back; the packet of “budget beef bones” was too expensive, the loaf of bread was too much as was the bag of biscuits and finally, they picked up the small bag of “5 slices.” Five slices of white bread, wrapped in a clear plastic bag and called: ”School Pack 5 slices” was priced at Z$11.49. The reality of Z$2.29 for each precious slice of bread was deeply shocking. 14 months ago when the Zimbabwe government converted all our US dollars to Zimbabwe dollars at the rate of one to one, a whole loaf of bread, with 18 slices, cost less than one dollar. The majority of people here don’t have access to anything except Zimbabwe dollars and bread has become a luxury most cannot afford.
Sixty-one days into lockdown the struggle to survive for the majority of Zimbabweans who live from hand to mouth is unbearable. The government has eased the lockdown for businesses but not for informal traders who have now spent two months unable to do anything to earn a living and support their families. In 2018 a study by the IMF showed that Zimbabwe has the second-largest informal sector in the world and now all these men and women are just sitting at home: helpless, hungry, desperate. A friend I met who was trying to do furniture upholstery to survive lockdown was woken in the night to find that there was a burglar and all his upholstery tools had been taken. He has no chance of replacing any of them because when lockdown started two months ago you needed 40 Zimbabwe dollars to buy one US dollar; today you need 70 Zimbabwe dollars to buy one US dollar. Inflation is presently estimated to be over 900% by international economist Prof Steve Hanke at Johns Hopkins University.
As if to divert our attention from the shocking reality of the collapsing state of our country, the horrific story of the abduction, torture, abuse and sexual assault of three MDC women I wrote about a fortnight ago continues. Soon after the women were found, rescued and hospitalized, the sickening comments by people in our government began.
The Deputy Minister of Information, Energy Mutodi said on Twitter: 
“Details emerge MDC youths Joana Mamombe, Netsai Marova &amp; Cecilia Chimbiri went out for a romantic night to Bindura with their lovers who are artisanal miners. They parked their car at a police station for safety but tragedy struck when they demanded foreign currency for services.” Mr Mutodi was fired a few days later.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Nick Mangwana posted this on Twitter: “It is a diversionary tactic. A poorly choreographed attempt to throw a curveball at the system,” but a little later Mr Mangwana said this wasn’t the official government position and that he was quoting a “troll.”
Next came the arrest of two journalists, Frank Chikowore, (freelance) and Samuel Takawira (263Chat). They spent four nights in jail after going to the hospital to interview the three MDC women who were recovering from injuries sustained during their abduction and torture. The two journalists were charged with violating coronavirus lockdown regulations.
Then came the Foreign Affairs Minister, S B Moyo, who said that the three women were most likely to be “victims of a third force” or were “willing participants” in a “stage-managed theatre.”  Willing Participants? Abducted from a police station, hooded, beaten, abused and sexually assaulted with a firearm and you are “willing participant”? Yet again Zimbabwe has no words, but wait, it gets even more unbelievable.
The three victims: MP Joana Mamombe, Netsai Marova and Cecilia Chimbiri were then charged, in their hospital beds, for taking part in a demonstration, breaching Covid 19 lockdown regulations and promoting public violence. To date, the perpetrators have not been identified, located or arrested. Zimbabwe has maintained its reputation of being a place where victims are treated as perpetrators.</blockquote>

Cecilia Chimbiri has said she will sue Zimbabwe Republic Police following the leaking of her half-naked photos on social media after her abduction, Open Parly reports. Chimbiri’s lawyer Rose Hanzi has written to the Police Chief Godwin Matanga asking that the police fully investigate to determine how and under whose instruction “photographs of our client have been disseminated”
Chimbiri’s lawyers wrote:
<blockquote>We are extremely concerned that the dissemination of the said photographs is in direct violation of the guidelines provided in the 2012 Protocol on Multi-Sectoral Management of Sexual Abuse and Violence in Zimbabwe. The ZRP is a signatory to this protocol and all its officers are bound by its provisions,
Further be advised that we will be taking legal action against all those responsible in their official and individual capacities for damages. Accordingly, this letter serves as due notice in terms of Section 6 of the State Liabilities Act.
We further advise that we will not hesitate to invoke all constitutional and legal remedies available to our client, including suing all police officers, as well as the command structure involved in the present obtaining violation of our clients’ rights. Further, be advised that we will be taking legal action against all those responsible in their official and individual capacities for damages</blockquote>
According to Hanzi, the leaked photos were taken by a female police officer identified as Chief Superintendent Philip as evidence gathering for the purpose of the investigation, and it was brought to her attention that photos of her client taken ZRP’s Chief Superintendent Philip were circulating on different social media platforms.

MDC Alliance Activist To Sue ZRP For Leaking Her Semi-Nude Photos

Members of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) who visited Joannah Mamombe, Netsai Marova and Cecelia Chimbiri in hospital yesterday said that the trio was traumatised and in great pain.
The legislators said that the victimisation of the three members of the party was tantamount to the victimisation of all party members. We present below a statement that was issued by Shakespear Hamauswa, the party’s legislator for Warren Park following the visit.
<blockquote>At least 8 Harare MPs led by the Provincial Chairman Hon Chikombo, Secretary-General Hwende and VP Biti accompanied the people’s President Advocate Nelson Chamisa on a visit to Park Town Hospital where Harare West Member of Parliament Hon Joana Mamombe and two others at a are recuperating from after being tortured and traumatised by suspected state agents. Solidarity is one of our flagships as MDC Alliance. We say “injure one, injure all”.
The three youthful leaders are in pain and they were traumatised.
The regime has shown us once again what they fear most-popular uprising.
As MDC Alliance MPs for Harare, we condemn such acts of torture which amounts to terrorism.
We call upon the government to ensure safety of its citizens. We are against a situation where citizens will devise their own security systems as if they are in the state of nature where there is no common authority.
A closer analysis of the happenings in our country points to a Hobbesian state of nature where life was brutal, nasty and short. In that system, there was no common security. Individual security was based on own initiatives and personal strength.
In that state, everyone lived in fear of violent death. There were no judges. Everyone was a judge in his own case. 
Definitely that was before the modern civilised state.
That Zanu PF has thrown us back to the state of nature, it is now the time to come up with a people’s social contract.
We cannot live in this situation anymore unless we want to destroy ourselves.
A new social contract is needed that will be renewed every five years through a free and fair election.
That social contract should provide security for all.
The social contract should usher into being a new establishment premised on love, rule of law and democratic governance.
We have called upon the government to provide social welfare support for the vulnerable during the lockdown but they are failing to do that.
They only react with brutal force when citizens express their displeasure about continue bad governance.
We cannot have this kind of leadership whose toolkit comprises of weapons of torture, corruption, and brutality.
As MPs we condemn this kind of treatment to Members of Parliament and the general citizens of Zimbabwe.
We know the buck ends with ED and he must act to stop all acts of terror against Zimbabwean citizens.
