Sibangilizwe Nkomo, the son of the late Vice-President Joshua Nkomo, is the leading candidate for the ZAPU’s presidency.
ZAPU is preparing for its elective congress to be held from October 28 to 30 in Bulawayo and Sibangilizwe has more nominations than all other contestants. 
The Party last month reaffirmed a <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/09/22/zapu-moves-to-block-joshua-nkomos-son-from-contesting-the-presidency/">resolution barring presidential aspirants who have not been card-carrying members of the party for the past five years from contesting the presidency</a>, a move that was viewed as a strategy to block Sibangilizwe, Read more on Pindula News.
The party’s secretary for mobilisation and organisation, Derek Katsenga, Sunday confirmed that the nomination process was going on well.
Five presidential candidates, Nkomo, Bernard Magugu, Strike Mkandla, Mark Mbaiwa, and Sithembiso Mpofu, would battle it out for the post of party president. Katsenga said:

Yes it’s a tight contest, but it’s good for the party because people need to sweat for these leadership positions.
</blockquote>
He said all provinces had already held their conferences except for Harare and Bulawayo, with Nkomo winning all the provinces.
Katsenga said nominations for Harare and Bulawayo were postponed to Saturday after the process was discontinued due to irregularities.
Indications are that in Manicaland Province:

</ul>
Nkomo’s supporters said his nomination rekindled hopes that the party would be strong enough to contest the 2023 elections.

Sibangilizwe Nkomo Leads In ZAPU Presidential Race

Opposition ZAPU has reaffirmed a resolution barring presidential aspirants who have not been card-carrying members of the party for the past five years from contesting the presidency at its elective congress set for next month.
On Saturday, the party’s National People’s Congress (NPC) held a meeting and 24 members voted in favour of the clause while eighteen voted against it.
Zapu secretary-general Strike Mnkandla, who is also eyeing the presidency, told <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/2021/09/zapu-plots-to-sideline-nkomos-son/">Southern Eye</a> that the clause was necessary to block “omafikizolo” (latecomers) and Zanu PF proxies from assuming the party’s reins. He said:
<blockquote>
The idea is that when choosing people, we must ensure that someone does not come from Zanu PF and contest party positions. You cannot just have an open-door policy. As such, members must be paid up, must have served the party in various capacities for years and so forth.
It (decision) simply says you cannot contest for the leadership when you have never served in any organ, in any district or in any capacity. This decision is not meant to penalise anybody but to ensure that aspiring leaders know where the organisation is, where it has come from and where it is going. It has to be a continuous process.
</blockquote>
Party insiders said the resolution was allegedly targeted at, among others, Sibangilizwe Nkomo, the son of the late Zapu founding leader Joshua Nkomo.
Nkomo has been accused by other presidential aspirants of being an inheritance hunter, adding that he was a latecomer and wanted to turn the party into a “family and clan dynasty”.
Nkomo, who resigned in March as chairperson of both the Joshua Nkomo Cultural Movement and the Joshua Nkomo Legacy Restoration Project Trust, after entering the race for the Zapu presidency, yesterday maintained that he was qualified to contest. He said:

It does not affect me. I have been a card-carrying member of the party since 2010.
</blockquote>
Other Zapu party members eyeing the presidency are spokesperson Iphithule Maphoda, Matabeleland South spokesperson Matthew Sibanda, Bernard Magugu and Mqondobanzi Magonya.
Issac Mabuka, who has been acting president since the death of Dumiso Dabengwa, opted out of the race.
<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_African_People%27s_Union">The original ZAPU</a> was formed in the 1960s and was led by Joshua Nkomo. The party merged with ZANU in the 1980s following a way to foster peace in Zimbabwe following Gukurahundi.
The current outfit was “revitalised” by individuals who were not happy with the treatment former ZAPU members were getting from their ZANU counterparts.

ZAPU Moves To Block Joshua Nkomo's Son From Contesting The Presidency

Children of ZPRA and ZAPU Veterans (COZZ) who are reportedly wallowing in poverty have embarked on a fundraising campaign to raise funds to buy food hampers for the war veterans during the 2020 Christmas season, The Standard reports.
This was revealed by Mthulisi Hanana, the director of the Dumiso Dabengwa Foundation (DDF) who spoke to the publication and revealed that the DDF was fundraising for the initiative together with Mafela Trust:
<blockquote>The initiative comes against a background of noting that most Zpra and Zapu cadres are not being taken care of by the government for many reasons and obviously you know that Zapu and Zpra have always been the dark voices of the struggle as government does not want to recognise their role during the liberation war
When war veterans were being vetted, most Zapu and Zpra cadres were not vetted. As a result, they are not getting much or not realising any benefit from their participation in the liberation struggle.
We have a dilemma that our parents are not recognised as war heroes, are not being taken care of by the government of the day and they had their properties meant to fund their welfare taken away by their government, leaving them to wallow in abject poverty.</blockquote>
ZAPU Spokesperson spoke to the publication and said they endorsed the initiative by the Children of The ZPRA and ZAPU Veterans :
<blockquote>We are not as a party in a position to articulate anything, but only to applaud the initiative to supplement on our struggle veterans’ welfare, which has largely been ignored by the state, leaving Zapu veterans to live and die in abject poverty due to government neglect.</blockquote>
