Mpilo Central Hospital has been affected by the current water shortages in Bulawayo and this is forcing relatives of patients admitted at the hospital to bring water in containers.
Members of staff who spoke to <a href="https://cite.org.zw/byos-water-shortages-affect-mpilo-hospital/">CITE</a> on condition of anonymity said the hospital has been experiencing water challenges for the past two weeks. Said a staff member:
<blockquote>
The hospital did not have running water for the past two weeks. There is no water in the maternity ward.
They had said they would call the council, but we are not sure if they have called yet. Some wards now have water, but the pressure is very low.
</blockquote>
Chief Medical Officer for Mpilo Central Hospital Dr. Narcisius Dzvanga told CITE that the hospital depends on the Bulawayo City Council for water and when surrounding suburbs are cut off, they are also affected. He said:
<blockquote>
Mpilo does not have an independent BCC water supply. We are connected with other places, so we are equally affected.
We do have four functional boreholes unfortunately they are not directly connected to the hospital side.
This is because BCC refused to allow us to feed water into them from their systems.
We also have multiple jojo tanks that are strategically positioned around the hospital close to the wards.
We recently got assistance to draw water from them to the higher floors. The only challenge with them is that they fill up either through the bowsers or running water. If we get neither, then they will be empty.

Dr. Dzvanga, however, said the City of Bulawayo has been very consistent in dispatching a bowser whenever there is prolonged water rationing.

Bulawayo Water Crisis Affect Mpilo Central Hospital

Outgoing Southern African Development Community (SADC) executive secretary Stergomena Lawrence Tax said that there is no crisis in Zimbabwe that warrants regional intervention.
Speaking to the Daily News On Sunday on Saturday, Tax said it was up to President Emmerson Mnangagwa and other local stakeholders to decide whether to hold national dialogue or not. Tax said:
<blockquote>Zimbabwe as a sovereign state has its means and frameworks to guide the political affairs of the nation.
SADC as a regional bloc recognises constitutions and legislation of member states and encourages SADC citizens to resolve national political differences through peaceful means while abiding by the relevant laws.
… At present, there is no intra-state conflict in Zimbabwe that requires the activation of the regional response mechanisms.</blockquote>
Tax further said the MDC Alliance had not approached the regional body to facilitate dialogue between Mnangagwa and the opposition. She said:
<blockquote>As far as the secretariat is concerned, we do not recall being recently approached.
We are not aware of any challenges specific to Zimbabwe which require the activation of any of the regional response mechanisms.</blockquote>

There Is No Crisis In Zimbabwe To Mediate - SADC

President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Friday taunted opposition political parties, human rights defenders and activists for agitating for regional intervention in the Zimbabwean crisis, saying they are wasting their time.
Addressing a ZANU PF central committee meeting in Harare yesterday, Mnangagwa said he chats with regional leaders regularly and they laugh at reports of the existence of a crisis. He said:
<blockquote>I can assure you almost on a weekly basis, currently, almost on any other day, I discuss with my brother (South African President Cyril) Ramaphosa, I discuss with my brother (Botswana President Mokgweetsi) Masisi (and) with Hage Geingob (Namibian President), we chat and laugh at your social media insinuations.
So you are wasting your time.</blockquote>
Mnangagwa again denied the existence of a crisis in the country and said the crisis exists in the minds and bedrooms of activists. He added:
<blockquote>The crisis exists in their minds, it exists in their parties. The crisis exists in their bedrooms, not in Zimbabwe.</blockquote>
Zimbabwe experienced a wave of abductions, politically-motivated arrests and torture of perceived opponents, including journalists and lawyers, ahead of the July 31 protests.
This prompted the South African government and the ruling African Nationa Congress (ANC) to send delegations in August and September respectively, to Harare to have an appreciation of the situation on the ground.

ED Taunts Critics, Says SADC Leaders Laugh At Reports Of Crisis In Zimbabwe

President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Friday said claims made by Zimbabweans on social media that there is a crisis in the country border on subversion (the undermining of the power and authority of an established system or institution).
President Mnangagwa made the remarks while delivering his opening remarks at the principals executive meeting of the Political Actors Dialogue (POLAD) in Harare today. He said:
<blockquote>In the wake of the arrest of some elements whose actions sought to not only incite the public to gather against the set rules but also bordering on subversive allegations of a crisis have been made mainly in social media circles.</blockquote>
Mnangagwa added that there is no crisis in Zimbabwe as he was declared the winner by the Constitutional Court in the aftermath of the contentiuos 2018 presidential election. He said:
<blockquote>I wish to unequivocally state that there is no crisis in Zimbabwe as elections were held in July 2018 and a winner was declared in terms of the country’s Constitution.
All contestants were invited to join this dialogue in the national interest.</blockquote>
MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa challenged Mnangagwa’s victory at the Constitutional Court but the judges threw out his challenge citing lack of evidence of rigging.
However, Chamisa has maintained that electoral officials and the ruling ZANU PF party “stole” his victory and he has since refused to join POLAD.
The South African government has accepted that there is a crisis in Zimbabwe and is prepared to broker all-inclusive dialogue among the country’s stakeholders.
