The Mestaria Gallery in Alserkal Avenue in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, will be showcasing a collection of traditional Zimbabwean sculptures by contemporary artists in their new exhibition “The Shona Collective”.
The Shona Collective exhibition will be running from January 27 until February 17, 2023.
The exhibition will showcase the work of nine Zimbabwean artists from their atelier, The Shona Collective.
The artists are David White, Bywell Sango, Gregory Mutasa, Tawanda Makore, Royal Katiyo, Leonard Sezhendo, Lovemore Bonjisi, Witness Bonjisi, and Dominic Benhura.
Speaking to The National, the Shona Collective founder, Demitris Petrides, said:

I am excited to show the world how the third generation of Shona sculptors has transformed into producing more modern works with new types of stones that can only be found in Zimbabwe.
… I am a strong believer that every single piece will find its predestined owner.

The Shona art style is a centuries-old stone sculpting tradition of the Shona, with the skills and techniques passed down within families from one generation to the next.
The sculptors used only a hammer and chisel to carve stone.

Zimbabwean Artists To Showcase Shona Stone Sculpting Art In Dubai

The Dubai Chamber of Commerce has announced the establishment of the Zimbabwean Business Council whose main objective is to promote the commercial interests of Zimbabwe and Zimbabwean businesses in Dubai.
The business council also aims to promote Zimbabwe-owned UAE-registered companies as well as their goods and services in the United Arab Emirates.
Maha Al Gargawi, Executive Director of Business Advocacy at Dubai Chambers said:

We aim to create new channels of economic cooperation between business communities in the emirate and promising markets around the world.
Covering markets of strategic importance to Dubai, business councils provide the right platforms for businesses in the UAE and abroad to connect, collaborate and build mutually beneficial partnerships. 
These councils will support us as we further expand our presence across Africa, Latin America and the Middle East and attract more companies and investment from these regions.

In his remarks on the establishment of the new business council, Rungano Innocent Nyaude, one of the founding members of the council, said:

Zimbabwe Business Council Established In Dubai

Ethiopian Airlines is set to launch its new service to Bulawayo, Zimbabwe on 30th October using a Boeing 737-800. 
Ethiopian’s flight will stop in Victoria Falls before carrying on to Bulawayo and then direct to Addis Ababa.
Airport authorities are excited to see new foreign airlines landing at Bulawayo Airport (BUQ) after an upgrade in its flying facilities recently, according to Bulawayo24. 
Flights will leave Addis Ababa (ADD) at 08:30 AM bound for their usual service to Victoria Falls (VFA), landing at 12:10 PM local time. After an hour on the ground, the flight continues to Bulawayo, touching down at 13:55 local time. 
The flight will operate 4x weekly, on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday.
The return service leaves BUQ at 14:55 and lands at Ethiopian’s hub in ADD at 20:45 local time, 4 hours and 50 minutes later.
The flight will use one of Ethiopian’s Boeing 737-800s, a workhorse in the continental fleet. 
From December 1st onward, the 737-800 will take over the route for the future.
Bulawayo is already served by a few international airlines, but none as big as Ethiopian Airlines. 
The African giant’s entry means that passengers flying in and out of Bulawayo now have the opportunity to make a one-stop connection (or two on the way in) to the US, Europe, Asia, and the rest of the continent with relative ease.
Airline executives in the country also said cargo can come directly from Dar es Salaam, Dubai, China or Turkey among others direct into Bulawayo instead of transporting their cargo to Harare and then move their goods by road to Bulawayo.

Ethiopian Airlines Set To Introduce Flights To Bulawayo End Of October

The Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, Kazembe Kazembe, is in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, on an official visit.
According to the <a href="https://www.wam.ae/en/details/1395303093733">Emirates News Agency</a>, Kazembe visited the Dubai Police General Headquarters and Dubai Smart Police Station (SPS) at City Walk recently.
Kazembe was welcomed by Major General Dr Adel Al Suwaidi, Director of Jebel Ali police station, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Police Stations and a number of senior officers. Reported the Emirates News Agency:

The delegation was introduced to the various services provided by the Dubai Smart Police Station (SPS) to the customers in 7 languages around the clock and without human intervention, including 27 key services, such as reporting crimes and traffic incidents, as well as a further 33 community-based services, which range from obtaining a good-conduct certificate to social support for victims of family violence.
They were accompanied to the Command and Control Centre where they were briefed about the latest services and initiatives that enhance security and safety in the emirate.
They also learned about the centre’s equipment and latest additions such as the 3D map that covers Dubai and the patrol dispatching system that ensures swift and efficient response to reports and emergency calls.
They also toured both the Director of the General Directorate of Traffic and the General Department of Criminal Investigation and presented by Major General Saif Muhair Al Mazroui and Major General Jamal Salem Al Jalaf the best practices and services provided by the Departments in combating organised and financial transnational crimes and other topics of mutual interests.
Toward the end of the visit, Kazembe expressed his appreciation for the warm reception and praised Dubai Police’s utilisation of the latest technologies.

Kazembe Tours Dubai Police General Headquarters And Dubai Smart Police Station

Zengeza West MP, Job Sikhala (MDC Alliance), who is also CCC deputy chairperson, has called for the amendment of the Trafficking of Persons Act to include 20-year mandatory sentences for people involved in human trafficking.
In a post on Twitter, the lawyer-politician said the trafficking of Zimbabweans to countries in the Middle East is now a national crisis that needs to be nipped in the bud. <a href="https://twitter.com/JobSikhala1/status/1524649819700088832">Wrote Sikhala:</a>

There are urgent issues that we need to attend to as a nation collectively. Human trafficking from our country to the Middle East, especially, to Oman, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia is now a national crisis.
Our sisters are lured to get into a web of deceit through being promised heaven on earth. They are promised to work in hotels, schools, hospitals etc when in actual fact they will be dumped into the hands of modern-day slave masters.
They are promised salaries ranging from $350US to $2000US and the provision of accommodation, food and other ancillaries.
The arrival at the unknown destination is the beginning of a long journey of no return. They are left in the hands of vultures. Driven from the point of arrival for 10hrs not knowing where u are going.
Human trafficking agents operate using employment agents’ licences and the majority would be deceived to think that, their life will never be the same again.
They will realize at the point of arrival that, the Canaan they were promised is actually hell on earth.
Stories I have received I saw dehumanizing that, some have been turned into sex slaves and sheepherders.
Their passports are seized the moment they arrive at their new destination. They will be told that they will be working to recover the money, used for their air tickets, food, costs for processing the visa and medical tests.
As vulnerable as they are, they will be taken into a house with a huge durawall and will do any job for the new slave master.
From washing clothes, herding goats and sheep, cooking and at night the unknowns will come and devour them to satisfy their sexual desires.
The agents who would have facilitated the travel will be paid big. Their role in seducing the victims with their honey lacerated tongues will reward them big.
Families would think that mwana akaenda kubasa and unbeknown to them is that one of theirs has been turned into a slave.
Families must be educated first, not allow their children to go where they have no idea of the consequences.
There is a need for serious national advocacy around the issue of these advertised jobs in the Middle East.
Parliament needs to immediately amend the Trafficking of Persons Act, to give it the teeth to bite those involved in the human trafficking business.
The agents have become the most dangerous species on earth. They make thousands of US dollars on the sorrows of other people.
The Trafficking of Persons Act should have a mandatory sentence of 20 years for all people who are involved in the business of trafficking our people.
These people belong in prison. Modern-day slavery is abominable. Enough is Enough!

Job Sikhala Calls For Stiff Penalties For Human Traffickers

According to Bloomberg Business, gold worth a staggering $1.5 billion is being smuggled out of the country every year which in turn deprives struggling Zimbabwe income and foreign currency which otherwise would have been remitted to the central bank if it had been sold through the formal channels.
This was revealed after the International Crisis Group (ICG) conducted a research that unearthed the smuggling that is ravaging the Southern African Nation.
ICG says the gold is being smuggled to the bullion-trading hub of Dubai and the smuggling was exacerbated by the policy in Zimbabwe that states that gold exporters can only get 70% of their proceeds in forex while the rest is converted into local currency.
A report by ICG reads in part:
<blockquote>Zimbabwe’s centralized gold-buying scheme underpays producers, a practice that encourages smuggling and erodes industrial mining profits, leading companies to close mines. Idle industrial mines become targets for intrusion by artisanal miners.</blockquote>
When contacted for comment, Mines and Minerals Deputy Minister Polite Kambamura said they were working on trying to curb the rampant smuggling of gold:

Gold Worth $1.5 Billion Being Smuggled Out Of Zim Each Year

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has denied claims that Zimbabwe Miners Federation (ZMF) president, Henrietta Rushwaya, who was arrested yesterday at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport while attempting to smuggle 6kg of gold to the United Arab Emirates, has been set free.
In a statement posted on its social media channels, the ZRP said Rushwaya was detained at Harare Central Police Station last night and expected to appear in court this Tuesday. The statement read:
<blockquote>ZRP reiterates that Henrietta Rushwaya was arrested and detained at Harare Central last night. She will appear in court today. Allegations that she was released without being taken to court are not correct and should be dismissed.</blockquote>
Meanwhile, in a statement, the Zimbabwe Miners Federation (ZMF) said Rushwaya, like every accused person, is presumed innocent until proven guilty. The statement read:
<blockquote>The ZMF has learnt of the arrest of its President Ms Henrietta Rushwaya and is following the case closely.
As an organization, we are aware that every accused person is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
We have had the privilege to hear Ms Rushwaya’s side of the story and believe in her innocence.
We anticipate that Ms Rushwaya will be taken to court tomorrow for possible initial appearance as part of due process.
In the interim, we remain committed to executing our mandate and vision as an organization.</blockquote>

Police Say Henrietta Rushwaya Has Not Been Freed

Zimbabwe is losing millions of dollars in revenue due to the smuggling of gold to Dubai through South Africa.
Speaking during a field day at the Bubi Gold Milling Centre where he was the guest of honour, Finance and Economic Development Minister, Mthuli Ncube, revealed that the government is putting in place measures to prevent the smuggling of the yellow metal so as to ensure increased formal deliveries. He said:
<blockquote>The sector has the potential to contribute much more if we can curb the leakages. Government is going ahead with implementing interventions to curb the smuggling of gold to Dubai through South Africa.
One of the interventions is where we have Fidelity Printers paying a lucrative price for gold sales. We are aware that all smuggling takes place to Dubai through South Africa and we are losing a lot of gold and we are doing everything as Government to curb leakages.</blockquote>
Minister Ncube said gold alone generates US$1 billion annually and small-scale miners account for over 60 per cent and at times as much as 70 per cent of gold production in the country.

A Lot Of Zimbabwean Gold Smuggled To Dubai

UAE tourism hub Dubai will open for tourists on 7 July but with strict rules, The Independent reports. Dubai which was closed to travellers since 25 March has said travellers will be required to produce a medical certificate and undergo a mandatory PCR test at Dubai Airports. If someone tests positive for COVID-19 on arrival they will be taken to an isolation facility for 14 days at their own expense.
In case tourists want to go to the beach:
<blockquote>Beach-goers are required to maintain a distance of two metres between one another, along with their sun-beds, while there should be a gap of four metres between two groups of people and their sun-beds on the beach</blockquote>
UAE recorded over 44 000 COVID-19 cases, over 32 000 recoveries and 305 deaths since the onset of the outbreak.

Dubai To Open For Tourists In 2 Weeks Time - Report

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/High_Court_of_Zimbabwe" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">High Court</a> judge Justice Amie Tsanga has ordered former Vice President <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Joice_Mujuru" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Joice Teurai Ropa Mujuru</a> to pay a United Arab Emirates-based company, Suzane General Trading JLT (Pvt) Ltd, US$70 000.
The payment is compensation following the collapse of a joint venture agreement signed between the parties over eight years ago.
Justice Tsanga also ordered Mujuru to settle the debt within a seven-day period counting from the date of the granting of the court order being December 4, 2019. Justice Tsanga ruled:
<blockquote>Whereupon after reading documents filed of record and hearing counsel, it is ordered that the second defendant (Mujuru) be and is hereby ordered to pay the plaintiff (Suzane General Trading) the sum of $70 000 together with interest at the prescribed rate from the date of the issuance of summons to the date of full payment.</blockquote>
In the lawsuit, Mujuru was cited as the second defendant together with International Travel Shops Africa (Pvt) Ltd, and one Tirivanhu Mudariki.
Court papers indicate that on November 16, 2011, the Dubai firm entered into an agreement with International Travel Shops Africa (Pvt) Ltd, Mujuru and Mudariki which they termed a share sale and management agreement.
The Dubai firm then paid US$150 000 for the purchase of goodwill and advanced a loan of US$50 000 to both Mujuru and Mudariki.
According to the firm, following a breach of clause 7 of the principal agreement by International Travel Shops Africa (Pvt) Ltd, the parties agreed in principle that the envisaged joint venture had irretrievably broken down.
The matter was subsequently referred to arbitration where Mujuru was ordered to compensate the Dubai-based firm.

Mujuru Ordered To Pay US$70 000 To Dubai-based Firm

According to ZimLive, a private jet owned by Royal Jet of Dubai and regularly used by President <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Emmerson_Mnangagwa" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Emmerson Mnangagwa</a> performed bizarre manoeuvres on Wednesday.
Posting on its Twitter handle, the publication said the jet flew for more than three hours from Harare to Bulawayo, back to Harare, and then to <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Victoria_Falls" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Victoria Falls</a> and again back to Harare without landing once. President Mnangagwa's Dubai Jet In Unusual Manoeuvres - Report

President <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Emmerson_Mnangagwa" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Emmerson Mnangagwa</a> said that Zimbabwe has had no lines of credit from international institutions for the past 20 years due to sanctions.
President Mnangagwa was speaking on Monday at the Global Business Forum Africa 2019 in Dubai. He said:
<blockquote>Up until now, we have had no support from international institutions – we’ve had no lines of credit for 20 years.
Bilateral relations have dried up. We need to introduce a raft of economic reforms to attract global capital. We must create an environment where investors feel comfortable.

The Zimbabwe Robotics team went to Dubai in the UAE and have been singing praises of the Middle East tourism destination as they got to compete with other students and experienced a different life which to put it in their own words ” never knew existed”.
The article written by a Mufakose High 1 student spoke at length about the competition first then about the city most of us dream to visit in our lifetime.

Zimbabwe Robotics Team Gush About Dubai, Call It A Lifetime Experience

President <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Emmerson_Mnangagwa" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Emmerson Mnangagwa</a> summoned a private jet all the way from France to fly him the round trip to Bulawayo from Harare, a ZimLive report claims.
The jet, a Boeing 737 which costs US$30,000-per-hour, flew 11,330km to pick up President Mnangagwa for the short trip to Bulawayo and back to Harare.
The luxury jet is owned by Royal Jet of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and developed a technical fault in Lyon, France, last week just before President Mnangagwa was due to fly to Harare after he had attended the 6th replenishment conference.
Data from flight-tracking websites show that the jet, registration A6-RJX, left Lyon on Wednesday and flew straight to Harare to position for the 35-minute flight to the City of Kings and Queens.
President Mnangagwa flew to <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Bulawayo" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Bulawayo</a> to attend the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/ZimTrade" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">ZimTrade</a> Annual Exporters’ Conference.
According to ZimLive, Mnangagwa has undertaken close to 40 foreign trips since seizing power in a military coup in November 2017 using expensive hired jets from UAE and Switzerland.

ED Hires Jet From Dubai For 20-minute Flight To Gweru - Report

Zimbabwe has been urged to embrace technology to enhance its tourism and hospitality industry.
The call was made by stakeholders at the ongoing Arabian Travel Market at which the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) is taking part.
Speaking at the event, Dubai Tourism director-general Helal Saeed Almarri said:
<blockquote>The theme of the 26th edition highlights the role that technology and innovation is playing in revolutionising the travel landscape.
Dubai has already embraced a ‘digital, mobile and social first’ agenda, placing future readiness at its core and promoting the adoption of the disruptive technology to evolve its destination offering.</blockquote>
Arabian Travel Market exhibition director Danielle Curtis opined that the hospitality industry should keep abreast with rapidly evolving innovations. Said Curtis:
<blockquote>The question remains: In a world of accelerating technology disruption, how can the hospitality industry continue to keep abreast with the rapidly evolving innovations surrounding it?
In our effort to address this question, cutting-edge technology and innovation has been adopted as our spotlight theme for 2019 and will be integrated across all shows, vertical and planned activities… and identifying the top tourism trends that have the greatest growth potential is one of the most valuable insights ATM has to offer.</blockquote>
ZTA head of co-operate affairs Godfrey Koti said that Zimbabwe was not too far behind. Said Koti:
We are growing awareness among our operators and the entire industry in the country. It is our hope that we embrace the advent of technology. We have already embarked on the journey to the digitisation of the tourism industry.

Zim Hospitality Industry Urged To Embrace Cutting-edge Technology

The Deputy Minister for Media, Information and Broadcasting Services, Energy Mutodi, said that the government will continue using borrowed planes for as long as Air Zimbabwe remains in its current state.
Mutodi was speaking to the Daily News over President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s reliance on a hired luxury jet from the United Arab Emirates for his local and international trips. Said Mutodi:
<blockquote>This issue has been clarified by the President’s spokesperson, George Charamba and that is the position of the government.
The UAE has offered us a plane to be used by the President whenever we want it. We are not paying a cent for that plane, but it is a privilege we are enjoying from this friendly nation.
In the case of the ZITF, the President was hosting Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and it was appropriate that the UAE plane is borrowed to give the visiting President a comfortable flight to Bulawayo.
Most Air Zimbabwe planes are grounded, and the remaining ones are unsafe for the praesidium.
The Ministry of Transport is working round the clock to ensure Air Zimbabwe is re-capitalised and new planes bought and until that happens, the country will continue to rely on borrowed aircraft.</blockquote>

Air Zimbabwe Plane Not Safe For President - Deputy Minister

Environment, Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister, Prisca Mupfumira is in the United Arab Emirates for the World Government Summit. She met senior tourism officials from Dubai and held fruitful talks on Tuesday morning according to the Chronicle. In a statement, the Ministry said:
<blockquote>The last day of the 7th World Government Summit in Dubai has been a progressive one for the country’s tourism industry. This follows Minister Mupfumira‘s successful engagement with the Dubai tourism director general, Mr Helal Almari this morning.</blockquote>

Tourism Minister, Mupfumira 'Sells' Zimbabwe To Dubai Tourism Officials At World Government Summit

Malawian prophet Shepherd Bushiri told his congregants that he had a vision of a Zimbabwean city that will look like Dubai in the next six years.
He said God told him that Zimbabwe’s time of punishment is over and that God will visit Zimbabwe. the malawian prophet said this vision will not be completed by one politician but by all of them together.
Said Bushiri:
<blockquote>God is doing a new thing in Zimbabwe. Hear me, as I speak as a prophet. God is about to exalt the land of Zimbabwe. We must pray for the land of Zimbabwe and I saw something about Zimbabwe very interesting. Zimbabwe has been a sleeping giant, but now the sleeping giant is going to rise. I am seeing a land that looks like Dubai. I am seeing a new city in Zimbabwe, it looks like Dubai and God is saying to me, ‘I am about to bless this land’. You are about to become rich in Zimbabwe because God is working on Zimbabwe. In the next six years from now, you will have something that looks like Dubai being built. Buhera South legislator Joseph Chinotimba is in Dubai where he is representing Zimbabwe in the World Government Summit which is running under the theme of ‘Global Dialogue for Happiness’. The summit ran from 11 to 13 February. Chinotimba was accompanied by TV personality and talk-show host Mai Rebecca Chisamba and Minister of Labour and Social Welfare Petronella Kagonye who revealed that the trip was funded by the host country
Chinotimba was invited after he was named the Ambassador of Happiness in honour of his humorous character. In 2012, the United Nations (UN) adopted the International Day of Happiness through a resolution 66/281 and the day is celebrated on the 20th of March each year. Chinotimba who is popularly known as Chinoz launched a book titled ‘Masasi Achinoz’ in Harare last month.

The Sunday News of South Africa claims that President Robert Mugabe owns a “luxurious Dubai mansion” which is next door to President Jacob Zuma’s mansion
The First Family have denied that they are still using the 10-bedroom mansion. However, a Dubai estate agent claims he sold the property to Grace Mugabe for R130 million in 2015 after she started off by renting it for R500 000 a month. Details of the Mugabe’s home were revealed in the legal wrangle between First Lady Grace Mugabe and a Lebanese Jeweller over a $1.3 million diamond ring.
Mugabe’s spokesman George Charamba said:
<blockquote>As a responsible father, President Mugabe rented that property for his son who was studying in Dubai. The property is no longer there.</blockquote>
