MDC-T leader Douglas Mwonzora said that he will announce the dates for the party’s elective congress in the next few days amid reports he fears ouster.
MDC-T chairman Morgen Komichi, vice-president Elias Mudzuri and ordinary party member Norest Marara are reportedly planning to challenge Mwonzora for the presidency.
In an interview with NewsDay at the National Heroes Acre in the capital on Monday, Mwonzora said preparations for the congress were 65 per cent complete. He said:

I am going to announce the congress dates in a few days’ time. We are almost 65% through preparing for the congress.
We are going to invite the media when we announce the dates. We want everyone in the party to prepare for the congress. We want the best candidate to win at the congress.

Reports indicate that some MDC-T members have left the party in protest over Mwonzora’s leadership after the party performed dismally in the 26 March by-elections.
The MDC-T failed to win a single council or parliamentary seat.

Mwonzora To Announce MDC-T Elective Congress Dates

MDC Alliance deputy president Elias Mudzuri and party chairperson Morgen Komichi are reportedly set to challenge party leader Douglas Mwonzora for the presidency at an elective congress set for June this year.
Mwonzora is facing rebellion from some MDC Alliance officials who blame him for the party’s poor performance in the 26 March by-elections.
The MDC Alliance failed to win a single seat despite grabbing the MDC-A name from its former leader Nelson Chamisa who is now the leader of CCC.
In a statement on Tuesday, 3 May, Mwonzora announced that the MDC will hold its ordinary congress at the end of June. Said Mwonzora:

The MDC will hold its ordinary congress at the end of June 2022. At this congress, the top leadership of the party will be democratically elected through a secret ballot in terms of the party constitution by delegates from wards, districts and provinces.
The ordinary congress will also deal with any proposed amendments to the party constitution as well as key policy issues to guide the party in the execution of its mandate which is to bring democratic change in Zimbabwe.

MDC Alliance insiders told NewsDay yesterday that both Mudzuri and Komichi believe they can revive the waning fortunes of the once formidable opposition party. Said a source:

Mudzuri believes he can revive the party after it was humiliated during the March by-elections.
He boasts that he was the only organising secretary in the history of the MDC to win a majority in Parliament and the presidency in 2008.
On the other hand, Komichi believes that he is the custodian of Morgan Tsvangirai’s legacy.
</blockquote>
When contacted for his comment, Mudzuri could neither confirm nor deny that he was going to contest for the MDC presidency at the congress. He said:

When the time is ripe, I will make my decision known. I will not be led by people to rush my announcement.
I will tell the whole world what I will have decided, I am not a dead man.
</blockquote>
Meanwhile, Komichi recently criticised Mwonzora for unilaterally suspending senior party members who had questioned his leadership credentials.

MDC To Hold Elective Congress In June

CCC interim secretary-general, Chalton Hwende said that the opposition party cannot hold an elective congress before 2023 harmonised elections because it doesn’t have the funds for the event.
This comes barely a week after CCC interim deputy spokesperson, Gift Siziba claimed they will not hold a congress because they feared infiltration by ZANU PF and State security agents.
However, Hwende said CCC doesn’t have the huge sums of money needed to hold a congress as well as for election campaigns. Said Hwende:

The two biggest cost centres in a political party are: 1. Congress 2. General Elections. 
There is no sane party that holds both events in the same year because to have a congress for CCC you need US$2 million and an election, a minimum of US$150 million. Politics is a very expensive game.
We are less than 12 months before an election, and the three critical priority areas are 1. Voter registration 2 Candidates selection and polling agents training 3. Fundraising.

Former ZANU PF politburo member Jonathan Moyo mocked the opposition party over its decision to not hold a congress. He tweeted:

(Before By-Elections) THEM: We are a new party with no constitution and no ideology. We have no officials but one; all other positions are vacant!
(After By-Elections) THEM: We have no vacancies, no congress before the 2023 polls. We want to win power!

CCC: We Don't Have Money For An Elective Congress

ZANU PF director of communications Tafadzwa Mugwadi said that claims by CCC that the ruling party plans to infiltrate the opposition party’s elective congress show that ZANU PF is ubiquitous.
This comes after CCC deputy spokesperson Gift Siziba recently claimed that CCC had no plans of holding a congress as ZANU PF plotted to infiltrate their movement. Siziba was quoted as saying:

Let me clear this once and for all, there are people who are motivated by ZANU PF, to imagine and think that we are going for a congress.
Look we are a new political organisation, we do not hold congresses and we have no intention to hold a congress.
In CCC, the congress does not exist… it is in the headquarters of Zanu PF and CIO, who in their imagination think we are going to have a congress and they can deploy their people.
</blockquote>
Mugwadi said CCC leaders are confused and paranoid, a legacy of their days at the helm of the MDC Alliance. Said Mugwadi:
<blockquote>
Are they suggesting that with that claim they are also ZANU PF? ZANU PF will be glad to hear that the organisation which claims to be the biggest opposition is now claiming that it has Zanu PF membership within it.
But most importantly, it is their fear of leadership acrimony which continues to dog the organisation, the leadership acrimony which they carried from their old party MDC. They are clueless.
They don’t have a constitution, and they claim that the citizens are the structures, but surprisingly they carry the titles which they had when they were in the MDC Alliance.

Ironically, some political commentators with links to ZANU PF argue that CCC should hold a congress before the 2023 general elections.
Exiled former ZANU PF politburo member Jonathan Moyo dismissed CCC’s fears of infiltration. Moyo tweeted:

The CCC is saying no vacancies and no congress of any kind. CIO (Central Intelligence Organisation) wants to infiltrate us; maybe a people’s convention, get the nomenclature right.
But a citizen’s convention is better nomenclature. Wait, CIO can only infiltrate a congress; not a convention since it’s American, right.

ZANU PF Responds To CCC Infiltration Allegations

The opposition CCC does not intend to hold an elective congress before the 2023 harmonised elections, a party official has said.
Speaking in an interview with NewZimbabwe.com on Friday, CCC interim deputy spokesperson Gift Siziba said the party will have a people’s convention, and not a congress. Said Siziba:
<blockquote>
Our roadmap and path to power have no congress in it, not just in form and character or practice.
We are not holding a congress, the nomenclature of a congress does not exist (in our vocabulary).
What if we are going to have a national people’s convention or an assembly, we are not going to have a congress that belongs to ZANU PF, MDC Alliance and other political formations. It does not exist in the CCC.
It is the headquarters of ZANU PF and the CIO who in their imagination think we are going to have a congress so they deploy their people.
We know there are people planning, there is no vacancy in the alternative, and there is no programme for political power.
We have no political programme around what people might term a congress.
</blockquote>
Political commentator Pedzisai Ruhanya argued that CCC should focus on building party structures from the grassroots level before holding an elective congress. Ruhanya <a href="https://twitter.com/PedzisaiRuhanya/status/1517753073275387904">said:</a>
<blockquote>
While CCC is solidifying its branches in communities, and rural hinterlands, the call for CCC congress is fundamentally an elite matter not a party grassroots-based matter.
[Nelson Chamisa’s] approach to have a process, structural driven party is the right way before congress.
The elites in CCC want congress now before CCC organised its structures, branches, and cells across Zimbabwe. First things first and [Nelson Chamisa] trajectory is correct.
CCC must have thorough grassroots networks, and structures that are functional and then call for that congress/convention.

CCC has been under pressure to hold a congress to elect substantive leadership. It is currently led by interim executives who were transplanted from the MDC Alliance.

CCC Has No Plans To Hold Elective Congress - Siziba

The ruling ZANU PF will conduct its elective congress in October this year ahead of presidential, parliamentary and local government elections set for 2023.
This was announced by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who is the party’s First Secretary while speaking at the 361st Politburo session on Thursday afternoon. He said:

As we convene at this session, it is also important that we remain alive to the fact that, this is the year our party is holding our elective conferences of the Women and Youth Leagues as well as the party Congress scheduled for October 2022.
