British multinational bank Standard Chartered Plc on Thursday, 08 June announced it has agreed to sell its Zimbabwe subsidiary to local company FBC Holdings Limited as it moves ahead with plans to exit seven markets in Africa and the Middle East.
A <a href="https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/standard-chartered-to-sell-zimbabwe-unit-locally-to-fbc-holdings-1.1930417">report by Bloomberg</a> indicates that Standard Chartered will transfer 100% of its shareholding in the unit, including the custodial services business, to FBC Holdings (FBCH).
FBCH will also acquire the economic interest in Africa Enterprise Network Trust whose main asset is a 20.7% shareholding in Mashonaland Holdings.
In a statement on Thursday, Standard Chartered’s chief executive officer for Africa and the Middle East, Sunil Kaushal, said the agreement with FBCH “is in line with the bank’s global strategy, aimed at achieving operational efficiencies, reducing complexity, and driving scale.”
Standard Chartered is exiting seven markets to simplify its operations and focus on higher growth areas within the region.
The bank sold its Jordan business to Arab Jordan Investment Bank in March and will also fully exit Angola, Cameroon, Gambia, Jordan, Lebanon and Sierra Leone.
Standard Chartered will close its retail banking operations in Tanzania and the Ivory Coast to focus on corporate banking.
FBCH will continue to employ all Standard Chartered staff in Zimbabwe and will take over its clients in the country.

In the spirit of protecting its valued customers from hackers and fraudsters who are always on the prowl, FBC Bank continues to put in place proactive interventions that protect and minimise the risk of financial loss for our customers.
The bank has taken note of potential loss points during online transaction cycles involving E-Commerce transactions that happen on websites. Generally, these transactions are executed/processed after the provision of card credentials which include Card Validation Value (CVV2) numbers.
However on some websites mainly where subscription-based payments are executed, the transaction may go through without a request for your card CVV2 number. This leaves and provides an opportunity for hackers and fraudsters to compromise one’s card which may result in a financial loss to the card holder.
The bank has thus been proactive following this discovery and has placed a cap on the amount that a card holder can execute online without the need to provide a CVV2 number.
To this end, all FBC MasterCard online transactions will be executed up to USD$60 (Sixty dollars) on all websites that do not request for CVV2 numbers.
Where a cardholder has been restricted from doing a transaction above USD$60 they will be required to contact our contact centre for assistance.
Where a CVV2 number has been provided for amounts above USD$60 and transactions are still failing, kindly contact us in order to verify if the merchant you are subscribing to, is consuming the CVV number or is asking for formalities.
All other capabilities of the card remain unchanged. Card holders can still do withdrawals and Point of Sale transactions at all MasterCard accepting ATMs and merchant locations respectively within the previously announced limits.
Card holders are also encouraged to use the temporary block facility available on our MasterCard Mobile Application, when cards are not in use

FBC Announces Measures To Protect Mastercard Online Transactions From Fraudsters {Full Statement}

FBC Holdings Limited has announced the temporary closure of FBC Building Society Leopold Takawira Branch effective Tuesday the 19th of January 2021.
In a public notice Monday evening, FBC said the closure of the branch is to allow disinfection and contact tracing following the detection of a COVID-19 case at the branch. The statement read:

FBC Announces Temporary Closure Of Leopold Takawira Branch

Some companies in Zimbabwe have started paying their employees extra money to help them survive the inflation that has seen prices of basic commodities increase drastically.
Among such companies are two banks, FBC and Nedbank Zimbabwe.  A letter posted on social media sent to FBC employees shows that the bank is paying its employees an allowance this month to compensate for the inflation.
Says the letter:

CUSHIONING STAFF AGAINST THE IMPACT IN COST OF LIVING
I am pleased to advise that Executive Management recommended the payment of a `once off’ cost of living cushioning allowance to cushion staff from the impact of the increase in the cost of living, and the Board of Directors exercised its sole discretion and approved the payment of this ‘cushioning allowance’ to all staff.
In that regard members of staff will be paid 2 times (twice) their monthly salary as a once-off payment to assist them in meeting their living expenses which have significantly increased due to rising prices of basic commodities and other essentials.
I also take this opportunity to commend the FBC Holdings team for their hard work and resilience, despite the prevailing tough macroeconomic environment and I am convinced that staff members will use the allowances to be paid during the last week of June an9 prudently and to the benefit of their families.

Zimbabwe is currently undergoing a period of high inflation with prices of basic commodities changing up multiple times a week due to a continuously weakening local currency (the RTGS$). The currency has weakened from about 1:4 to the USD to now 1:12 on the parallel market in just a few months. The government has insisted that speculators and unscrupulous businesses are causing the price increases and the loss of value of the local currency in order to profiteer.
