Sixteen (16) University of Zimbabwe (UZ) students who were arrested on Monday in connection with demonstrations against tuition fee hikes have all been released.
UZ recently increased undergraduate fees to between ZWL$300 000 and ZWL$500 000, up from ZWL$50 000, while some Master’s degree programme tuition fees were increased to close to ZWL$1 million.
The Students’ Representative Council (SRC) leader, Allan Chipoyi said the 16 students were all released. He said:

Since Monday, police have been looking for the organisers of the demonstration that happened and they arrested 16 students who have so far been freed.
</blockquote>
Two of the students, Thelma Nzero (19) and Tinotenda Mwenje (21) appeared before Harare Magistrate, Taurai Manuwere and were remanded out of custody to 29 September.
The two, who were among 14 suspects that were detained at Avondale Police Station, were released on free bail Wednesday.
Their alleged accomplices were released on Tuesday after paying ZWL$2 000 admission of guilty fines at the police station for disorderly conduct.

UZ Students Who Were Arrested Over #FeesMustFall Protest Released

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/University_of_Zimbabwe">University of Zimbabwe (UZ)</a> has <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/university-of-zimbabwe-raises-fees-for-the-august-december-2022-semester/">raised students’ fees for the August – December 2022 Semester</a> raising the eyebrows of many. The new fee structure seen by Pindula News suggests that an engineering student now needs to pay at least ZWL$500 000. 
Responding to the development, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Fadzayi_Mahere">Fadzayi Mahere</a>, a former Law lecturer at the UZ said the “poor” won’t afford the fees. Mahere who is also the national spokesperson of the opposition <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Citizens%27_Coalition_for_Change">Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC)</a> called upon authorities to review the fees downwards. She said:

The astronomical increase in fees by the @UniversityOfZim can only be described as criminal. This regime is anti-poor. A civil servant earns US$150 but has to pay ZWL$500,000 for an engineering student. That excludes living expenses. We need new leaders.
49% of Zimbabweans live in extreme poverty. A civil servant barely earns $200,000 yet the UZ has pegged fees at between $500,000 and $1million. How will the poor afford this? <a data-user-name="edmnangagwa" href="https://twitter.com/edmnangagwa/" rel="noopener user" target="_blank">@edmnangagwa</a> has failed to deliver affordable, quality education for Zimbabweans.

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Takudzwa_Ngadziore">Takudzwa Ngadziore</a>, the leader of the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_National_Students_Union" title="Zimbabwe National Students Union">Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU)</a> also rallied “young people” to demand a review of the fees downwards. He said:

The recent fees structure at the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) sends a strong message to young people. We should unite &amp; fight this authoritarian regime.A dysfunctional education system is detrimental to National Development. #FeesMustFall should be the talk &amp; walk @Zinasuzim FIGHT.
</blockquote>
Other commentators also said education was becoming a privilege as school fees in Zimbabwe are now beyond the reach of an average parent.
Fees have been going up in recent years with learning institutions citing the depreciation of the Zimbabwe dollar.

Mahere Says The Govt Is "Anti-poor" Following An "Astronomical Increase In Fees By UZ"

In a statement, Midlands State University (MSU) said it has made a U-turn its decision to bar students with fees arrears from sitting for their second semester examinations
The decision comes after a demonstration held at the university’s main campus in Gweru by students. The statement reads:
<blockquote>Please note, all our students will be permitted to sit for examinations for the second semester 2017.</blockquote>
Early this month, MSU imposed a daily fine of $2 for students who missed the October 20 registration deadline for the July to November 2017 semester. They have also advised unregistered students to apply for bank loans under the government educational loan facility.

MSU makes u-turn on decision to bar students with fees arrears from sitting for exams

University of Zimbabwe (UZ) medical students are still homeless after the institution refused to comply with a High Court order. According to lawyer and activist <a href="https://twitter.com/DougColtart/status/880471577590210560">Douglas Coltart</a>, UZ security guards are refusing the students re-entry.
On Wednesday 28 June, Harare High Court Judge Justice Nyaradzo Munangati-Manongwa <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/news/2017/06/28/high-court-rules-favour-evicted-uz-medical-students-says-eviction-irrational/#.WVVGMIh97IU">ruled against the University of Zimbabwe and said that the institution’s eviction of medical students by was irrational</a>. The ruling followed an urgent application which was filed by medical student Clifford Charera who was represented by Bellinda Chinowawa and Noble Chinhanu of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights.
The students were evicted for protesting against an increase in fees after the university alleged that they had turned violent and started throwing stones. The lawyers argued that that the notice period given to the students to move out of the university halls of residence was unreasonably short, given how difficult it is to secure alternative accommodation. Justice Nyaradzo Munangati-Manongwa agreed with the application and overturned the university’s arbitrary decision to evict the medical students from their halls of residence.

UZ medical students remain homeless as university refuses to comply with High Court order

Opposition parties have condemned the actions of the University of Zimbabwe which evicted all medical students from their halls of residence for protesting an increase in fees by the university.
MDC-N spokesperson Kurauone Chihwayi said:
<blockquote>The MDC condemns in strongest terms the arrest and violent eviction of students. There is a better way of handling such</blockquote>
MDC-T spokesperson Obert Gutu said:
<blockquote>This clearly shows that the UZ administration is totally insensitive to the plight of the students who are rightfully arguing that the increase in fees is both unjustified and unaffordable.
The MDC calls upon the UZ administration, together with the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, to immediately engage the medical students and find a lasting solution to this impasse.</blockquote>
The People’s Democratic Party spokesperson Jacob Mafume added:
<blockquote>Our regime is evil and always responds without empathy. The students have a legitimate concern. How do you raise fees without notice?</blockquote>

Opposition parties condemn eviction of UZ students for protesting fees hike

University of Zimbabwe (UZ) students have been left stranded after the <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/news/2017/06/26/uz-orders-students-vacate-premises-feesmustfall-protest-30-increment-fees/#.WVFfa2h97IU">institution evicted them for staging a #FeesMustFall protest earlier today</a>.  The institution decided to evict the students because they had become violent. According to a notice from one SM Chevo, the registrar:
<blockquote>The Security Department has reported this morning, that a gathering of Medical Students at the Students Union Building had started throwing stones, a behavior that the University of Zimbabwe does not tolerate. The University has now made a decision that all Medical Students should move out of the halls of residence on campus and off campus with immediate effect. All Medical Students are therefore directed to vacate the halls of residence with immediate effect and by no later than 13:15 hours today, 26 June, 2017</blockquote>
