Fire destroyed staff quarters at Kwekwe General Hospital on Tuesday morning, leaving nine families including doctors, physiotherapist, nurses and an administrator without accommodation.
Kwekwe General Hospital Medical Superintendent, Dr Patricia Mapanda confirmed the incident. She said:
<blockquote>I can confirm that a fire broke out, razed one of the staff residences and destroyed property.
The staff members including doctors lost almost everything as they did not get time to remove their property.</blockquote>
Dr Mapanda said there were no injuries or fatalities as a result of the fire. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
The incident comes barely a fortnight <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/05/27/mpilo-central-hospital-ceo-speaks-on-fire-incident/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">after 39 health workers and their families at Mpilo Central Hospital</a> in Bulawayo were left homeless after a massive fire destroyed their living quarters.

Fires Damages Kwekwe Hospital Staff Quarters

Doctors and other health workers housed in the 39-room double-storey building that was gutted down by fire at Mpilo Central Hospital on Wednesday night, jumped through windows to escape the inferno.
The Fire Brigade responded but only arrived after more than 30 minutes with faulty equipment
The hospital&#8217;s acting Chief Executive Officer, Professor Solwayo Ngwenya revealed that the cost of the damage was an estimated US$500 000. He said:
<blockquote>We were woken up last night, there was a terrible fire and we rushed here and found three fire brigade vehicles already at the scene trying to bring down the fire.
The fire was very ferocious, it spread very quickly throughout the whole building and the roof started curving in and collapsing.
We found that people had jumped out through the windows and had collected some of their belongings. The building houses 30 workers and they jumped through windows.
We were lucky that no one was seriously injured except a doctor who broke an ankle and someone who inhaled some fumes from the smoke.</blockquote>
Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce, Raj Modi told journalists on Thursday that the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit. Said, Modi:
<blockquote>This is the second time this is happening here. The last time it happened it was an electrical appliance that was left on and this time it&#8217;s an electrical short circuit.</blockquote>
In 2019, another fire destroyed an adjacent smaller residence for doctors. An electrical fault was thought to have caused that blaze.
Modi urged the institution’s administration to pay attention to issues such as electrical faults and other reports and move swiftly before the worst happens.
He added that government would assist in rebuilding the broken down hostels.

Doctors Escape Through Windows As Fire Destroys Mpilo Hostel

Mpilo Central Hospital Chief Executive Officer, Professor Solwayo Ngwenya said 39 health workers and their families were left homeless after a massive fire destroyed their living quarters at the hospital on Wednesday night.
In a memorandum issued this Thursday, Prof Ngwenya said the hospital is arranging temporary alternative accommodation for the affected members of staff and their families.
The estimated cost of damage to property as a result of the inferno is estimated at US$ 500 000.00, Prof Ngwenya said.

<blockquote>This is to inform you that last night one of our staff residences was destroyed by a massive fire. It affected 39 health workers and their families.
We were very lucky that no one was seriously injured. One person suffered a broken ankle and another had smoke inhalation effects but is stable.
Our thoughts are with the affected members and their families. The hospital is arranging temporary alternative accommodation for them.
Some staff residents reported seeing sparks of fire from an electrical distribution box, and we suspect that this could be the cause of the fire.
However, the Fire Brigade is working on further forensic investigations to establish the exact cause of the fire.
The estimated cost of damage to property is around US$ 500 000.00.
We hope to rise up from this terrible setback and continue to give service to many of our patients.</blockquote>

Mpilo Central Hospital CEO Speaks On Fire Incident

Zimbabwe&#8217;s second-largest hospital, Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo, suffered a major setback on Wednesday night when the doctors’ residence went up in flames.
This is the second time within a space of three years that the hospital’s hostel has caught fire and burning thousands of dollars worth of properties.
The fire incident was confirmed by the hospital&#8217;s Chief Executive Officer, Professor Solwayo Ngwenya. He tweeted:
<blockquote>Terrible things at our hospital, Thixo! Why us, Why? Mpilo Central Hospital, Our Only Pride!!</blockquote>

Officials are suspecting an electrical fault as the cause of the outbreak. Confirming the incident, Bulawayo Fire brigade senior divisional officer (administration), Jabulani Ndlovu said their preliminary findings pointed to an electrical fault. He said:
<blockquote>Yes, our officers attended to a fire outbreak at a doctors’ flat at Mpilo Central Hospital, for now, our preliminary findings point to an electrical fault but we are still doing our investigations.
This (Thursday) morning we are going to meet up with the hospital’s electrician as part of our investigations after that we will then have a clear picture on the cause of the fire.</blockquote>
Another doctor at the hospital, Hlupani Tichaona Chipunza has implored the goverment to assist the affected doctors. He also posted on Twitter:
<blockquote>Making an Urgent Appeal to The Government of Zimbabwe and all who can help, to pool together resources to assist Mpilo Hospital Doctors faced with these difficult circumstances.</blockquote>
The extend of the damage to the infrastructure at the hospital has not yet been established neither has the value of doctors&#8217; property lost in the inferno been ascertained.

Fire Guts Down Mpilo Hospital Doctors' Residence

A truck driver sustained serious burns when his fuel tanker caught fire after sideswiping another vehicle in Nyazura on Wednesday.
The Harare-bound truck was carrying 42 000 litres of petrol worth over US$50 000 when it caught fire at the settlement located about 150km south-east of Harare.
Police said a Toyota Land Cruiser vehicle encroached into the tanker’s lane, leading to the sideswipe.
No fatalities were reported, and the trucker is in stable condition, police further stated.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Manicaland provincial spokesperson Inspector Luxson Chananda said:
<blockquote>The truck driver sustained serious burns but is in stable condition while the driver of the Land Cruiser sustained minor injuries.</blockquote>
In February, another fuel tanker overturned in Harare, spilling 10 000 litres of diesel. The Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe says about 90 per cent of road accidents are a result of human error.

A 60-year-old widow from Mwenezi recently lost all her meagre assets after a fire gutted her house while she was working in the fields.
Margaret Kamwemvura, of village 10 Liburgia under Chief Neshuro, told TellZim News that the fire incident occurred on 25 January this year.
Kamwemvura suspects that her son&#8217;s cellphone which was on charge might have exploded resulting in the fire. She said:
<blockquote>One of my sons left his phone charging with a universal charger so it seems the battery exploded and caused the fire.
We had left home for the fields when the accident occurred and we were only alerted about the fire after we had seen thick smoke blowing from the direction of our homestead.
We then got home to find that everything had been destroyed and nothing was recovered including my cellphone which I had left inside the house.
All our entire belongings were destroyed as this was the only house that sheltered everything for us. We are only left with the clothes on our bodies and nothing else.</blockquote>

Hempac Sports Equipment Shop situated at the corner of First Street and Speke Ave in central Harare was on Tuesday morning gutted by fire, with property worth thousands of dollars lots in the inferno.
The shop sells gym, sporting equipment and sportswear.
The fire brigade could not save the shop and its goods from destruction but managed to prevent the fire from extending to other neighbouring shops.
While the cause of the fire could not immediately be ascertained, the shop manager Gracious Makurure suspected it could have been caused by an electrical fault. She said:
<blockquote>I was phoned sometime at around 6 am by a female workmate that she had been advised that the shop was burning.
When l rushed to the scene, l then saw the fire brigade team trying to extinguish the fire. Unfortunately, all the property was destroyed.</blockquote>

A RAM Petroleum fuel service station in Ruwa went up in smoke earlier on Saturday.
According to some eyewitnesses, the fire started from a fuel tanker that was delivering the commodity.

A ten-storey building was almost engulfed by fire on Tuesday morning in an incident involving an electric kettle.
The kettle was left switched on overnight on the 5th floor of Megawatt Building in central Harare, which is owned by the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/ZESA" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA)</a>.
Harare fire department’s assistant divisional officer, Philip Marufu told ZTN that the fire was immediately put out before it had done a lot of damage. He said:
<blockquote>There was a small fire on the fifth floor which actuated the sprinkler system and the fire was immediately put out then we shut the sprinkler.</blockquote>
The incident happened a few weeks after a shopping mall located at Robert Mugabe/Chinhoyi Street in Harare was completely gutted by fire.

Freak Fire Breaks Out At Megawatt House

A section of the Indian embassy in Harare was gutted by fire caused by a suspected electrical fault on Monday morning. Firefighters were immediately despatched to the premises to extinguish the blaze.
Indian Ambassador to Zimbabwe, His Excellency, Rangsung Masakui, confirmed that the fire only destroyed the Accounts office and there were no casualties. He said:
<blockquote>I was alerted by one of the employees in the Accounts department at around 0830hours that there was a fire in the Accounts office.
We immediately alerted the fire brigade team who were here on time. We are yet to ascertain the cause of the fire but we suspect an electrical fault and there have been no casualties recorded.</blockquote>
The Indian embassy is situated along Natal Road in Belgravia, a leafy suburb in the northern part of Harare.
There are other embassies in its vicinity and these include the Malaysian, Spanish, German, Swedish, Kuwait and Turkish missions.

Glen View Area 8 business complex was on Monday night gutted by fire which eyewitnesses believe was caused by an electrical fault.
The fire started around 10 pm and destroyed property and woodwork machinery worth millions of dollars.
Finished products and machinery including generators and compressors were engulfed by the inferno.
This is the fourth time that the complex, situated along <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Willowvale" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Willowvale</a> Road in Harare, has been gutted by fire in 2019 alone.

A fire broke out at Tongogara High School on Wednesday afternoon, destroying property worth thousands of dollars.
The incident was confirmed to ZTN News by Acting <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Midlands_Province" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Midlands</a> Provincial Education Director, Reverend Tedious Mativenga who said:
<blockquote>I can confirm that one of the hostels at Tongogara High School in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Shurugwi" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Shurugwi</a> was gutted down by fire which broke out in the afternoon.
The fire brigade was called immediately and managed to put out the fire. However, the top floor of the double-storey hostel had already been destroyed.
We have sent a team on the ground and the police are also investigating the matter to establish the cause of the fire.</blockquote>
Reports indicate that the fire was caused by students who were allegedly smoking cigarettes in the dormitories.
Some of the students affected were sitting for their Ordinary Level <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_School_Examinations_Council" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">ZIMSEC</a> examinations. They lost their clothes, books and other valuables.

Ruwa Country Club clubhouse was on Thursday gutted by fire, with the cause of the inferno still to be established.
The newly-established structure is reported to have been extensively damaged by the fire. National Police spokesperson Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident. He said:
<blockquote>We can confirm that there was a fire breakout at Ruwa Country Club and we are still investigating the cause.
We are not yet aware of the value of the destroyed property, but no one was injured.</blockquote>
Ruwa Country Club was recently transformed into a golf resort and residential estate and the refurbishment is ongoing.
It is located about 26 kilometres east of Harare along Mutare Road. It a brand new 18-hole championship golf course which is Zimbabwe’s second such development after Borrowdale Brooke.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said a house in Waterfalls was razed by fire resulting in the loss of US$200 000 that was kept in the house.
The fire broke out on Thursday night, 12 September 2019 and is thought to have been ignited by fuel jerry cans and LP gas that was stored in the house. Police said in a statement:
<blockquote>Police are investigating circumstances surrounding a fire incident that destroyed a house and household property in Waterfalls, Harare on 12/09/19 at about 1230hrs.
An explosion was heard emanating from the house. USD200 000, 00 which was in the house was also destroyed.
Two jerry cans with fuel and 3 tanks of LP gas which were in the house are believed to have fueled the fire.
We urge the public to avoid keeping large sums of money which should be deposited with banks, while fuel must not be kept in dwellings.</blockquote>

A fire broke out on Tuesday morning at Mbare Musika, destroying property worth thousands of dollars.
The fire reportedly erupted when a gas tank used by an informal trader for television and radio repairs exploded.
This fire is said to have started around 1 am, with Harare’s fire brigade team arriving at the scene when nearly all property in the complex was already burnt.
This incident comes a few days after a part of Siyaso Informal Traders market in Magaba was ravaged by fire.

Mbare&#8217;s Siyaso informal traders’ market was damaged by fire on Thursday night.
The fire reportedly started around 9 pm and security guards only became aware of the inferno when a greater part of the market had been engulfed.
A security guard who spoke to the Daily News said that he was not aware of how the blaze started. The guard, Marko Hwengwe, said:
<blockquote>We are not exactly sure how the fire started but we just saw flames from where we were standing. From there we alerted others who then called the fire brigade to come and douse the flames.</blockquote>
Harare Fire Brigade assistant divisional officer Moses Bvumavaranda revealed that well notified of the fire incident around 11 pm. He opined that an electrical fault and some flammable items could have been responsible. He said:
<blockquote>When firefighters attended to the alarm the complex was well alight meaning that it was covered with a full-blown fire. Another fire truck responded with a water carrier and from then on fire fighting started.
Preliminary results from the information gathered from some of the security guards and people around the complex suggested that it could have been an electrical fault caused by a short fuse.
We did face some challenges in putting out the fire as most of the hydrants were damaged therefore water was a problem.
Another problem was that the fire was spreading very fast because the market structures are congested.</blockquote>

Mbare's Siyaso Gutted By Fire, Again

St Luke&#8217;s Hospital in Matabeleland South Province was on Monday night gutted by fire.
The hospital can no longer operate after all equipment, medicines and records were reduced to ashes.
Provincial medical director, Dr Pugie Chimberengwa, confirmed the fire incident:
<blockquote>We have received a report that the Family and Child Health (FCH) department at our designated provincial hospital St Luke’s has been burnt down. Equipment was reduced to ashes including the VIAC unit where cancer screening is conducted.
&#8230; We also lost all cervical cancer screening equipment for the district in the fire. The Expanded Programme on immunisation (EPI) department also lost all fridges and their vaccines.</blockquote>
The fire also destroyed rooms that contained nutritional supplements for children with malnutrition as well as all documents and registers.
St Luke&#8217;s Hospital is a Roman Catholic mission hospital situated in Kusile District, about 120km from Bulawayo along the Victoria Falls Road.
It is the biggest hospital in Matabeleland North province.

St Luke's Hospital Suffers Extensive Damage By Fire

Prophetic Healing and Deliverance (PHD) Ministries founder and leader Walter Magaya’s Yadah Hotel in Waterfalls was on Thursday evening damaged by fire.
No one was injured in the fire that destroyed the western top section of the hotel. The cause of the fire has not yet been ascertained.
Police confirmed the fire but were not in a position to give full details as investigations were said to be ongoing.
However, PHD spokesman Overseer Admire Simango told The Herald that they suspected foul play since there was no electricity at the time. He said:
<blockquote>Around 5:30 pm, I received a call that there was a raging fire at the hotel. I contacted security people on the ground on what had happened, but they seemed not to be aware of everything that was happening.
What is very strange in the circumstances is that there was no electricity as usual.
I am told the generator was off, but there was a fire from nowhere. While I am not pointing to anything, we are smelling a rat.
It is very clear; the circumstances are not normal given the fact that there was no electricity or gas nearby.
We do not rule out foul play. Police are investigating and we do not want to jump to conclusions.
The police will give us the full information, but the preliminary findings point to the fact that there could be some foul play and we are very suspicious of whatever is happening given the events of the last few days.
We can tell that there is an underhand thing that is happening.</blockquote>
Magaya was said not to have been unsettled by the fire incident. The controversial clergyman was reported to be on his way to the United Arab Emirates. Said Simango:
<blockquote>The man of God is in a jovial mood, nothing is going to disturb the ministry and the upcoming event in Botswana. The man of God has taught us that when the enemy comes like a flood, the Lord raises his bar.</blockquote>

Foul Play Suspected In Walter Magaya's Yadah Hotel Blaze

Prophetic Healing and Deliverance Ministries Founder and Leader Walter Magaya&#8217;s hotel in Waterfalls is on fire. Firefighters are at the scene battling the blaze whose cause is yet to be established.

A Waterfalls hotel belonging to founder and leader of Prophetic Healing and Deliverance Ministries, Walter Magaya is reported to be on fire. Firefighters are said to be on the scene, fighting the inferno. The cause of the fire is not known.

BREAKING: Walter Magaya's Hotel In Waterfalls On Fire

A house belonging to Matabeleland North Provincial Affairs Minister Richard Moyo in Umguza, Matabeleland North was destroyed by fire following an electric fault.
The incident happened on Thursday evening sometime between 5 PM and 7 PM at the minister&#8217;s home that is situated about 17KM from Bulawayo. However, there were no injuries resulting from the fire.
Moyo told the Chronicle that he did not suspect any foul play. He said:
<blockquote>The fire started in one of the rooms that we are not using.
We were only alerted by security officers who were outside after they observed flames as it is a thatched house.
No one was injured in the process and the fire did not cause any serious damages. We suspect that the fire was caused by an electric fault and there is no foul play.</blockquote>

Minister's House Gutted By Fire

A fire destroyed 2 housing blocks at Guinea Fowl High School on Tuesday this week. The housing blocks served as homes for 6 teacher families. No one was hurt in the fire. It was put out by the Gweru City Council but not before it had destroyed property.

Gweru City Council public relations officer, Manford Gambiza:
<blockquote>We were quite responsive as it took us 10 minutes to go and put out the fire. There was extensive damage to property. We suspect an electric fault.
Social media is awash with reports that one of our tankers had no water which is false and I would like to urge the Gweru community to desist from circulating misleading information</blockquote>
This month, another fire destroyed school blocks at one of the country’s oldest schools, Hartzell School in Manicaland.

A fire destroyed a large part of Hartzell High School. The fire started on the morning of Saturday 6 April 2019. it&#8217;s not clear what caused the fire but reports suggest it could have been an electrical fault in the basement of one of the buildings.
Pictures circulating on the social media show the high school&#8217;s classroom block burning while a crowd looks on.

The government is set to embark on a thorough investigation in public hospitals following fire outbreaks that have destroyed property.
Speaking to the media in a post-cabinet briefing in Harare on Thursday, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting acting Minister Sekai Nzenza said:
<blockquote>Cabinet expressed concern over the growing trend of outbreaks of fire at government health institutions and called for an in-depth investigation into the causes of the occurrences.
Furthermore, the cabinet resolved to carry out targeted refurbishment of the strategic public hospitals throughout the country in order to improve health service provision.</blockquote>
Fires have destroyed infrastructure at several hospitals across the country with Mpilo, Parirenyatwa and Kariba hospital victims of fires in the recent past.

Govt Worried Over Fire Outbreaks In Hospitals

On Tuesday evening, Glen View Home Industry Complex caught fire.
According to Harare City Council at least 6000 square metres of the Glen View Complex was destroyed. The Service Station was saved. Below are some of the pictures of the complex supplied by Harare City Council:

A section of Kariba Hospital was on Thursday morning gutted down by fire.
The fire started from the Pharmacy section around 5 am on Thursday morning. The cause could not be readily ascertained.
Reports indicate that the fire spread the X-ray section.
Firefighters from Kariba Municipality and the Central Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) were trying to put out the blaze and stop it from spreading to other sections of the hospital.

Fires Breaks Out At Kariba Hospital

Kadoma Residents’ Association chairman Mr Wikirosi Mutizira blasted council for failing to contain the fire that destroyed three shops in the city last night.
Edgars, Jet and Coloursel shops were destroyed by fire which started around 2100hrs.By the time the fire brigade from Chegutu, which is about 33km away, arrived everything had been burnt to ashes. Said Mutizira:
<blockquote>The fire department is rotten. This is now the third consecutive time they have failed to contain fire outbreaks. Last month we had a fire in Ingezi and they came with an empty bowser. The latest fire incident is actually an embarrassment, with council failing to deal with a fire outbreak just less than five kilometres away from its fire station.</blockquote>
Kadoma mayor Councillor Action Nyamukondiwa said while the cause of the fire was yet to be established, council was not to blame for the destruction of the shops.

Kadoma Residents Blast Council For Failing To Act After Fire Destroys 3 Shops

Matapi Block 5 in Mbare was gutted down by fire which according to a resident who spoke to Harare City Council started in the early hours of Tuesday.
The fire was allegedly caused by a candle which was left unattended by an old woman who had gotten outside to fetch water. Below is a testimony by a resident:

Mbare's Matapi Block 5 Gutted By Fire

The Rainbow Tourism Group (RTG) has issued a press statement on what caused the fire at Rainbow Towers Hotel and Conference Centre in Harare on Wednesday evening. In the statement RTG says the fire occurred in one of the smaller conference rooms situated on the Mezzanine Floor of the hotel at approximately 1900 hours on the evening of 11 July 2018.
RTG said that there were no casualties nor damage to property save for small affected part of the ceiling. We publish the full press statement below:
<blockquote>ELECTRICAL FIRE AT RAINBOW TOWERS HOTEL &amp; CONFERENCE CENTRE 
An isolated fire incident occurred in one of the Rainbow Towers Hotel &amp; Conference Centre smaller conference rooms situated on the Mezzanine Floor of the hotel at approximately 1900 hours on the evening of 11 July 2018. The fire was successfully contained to a small area in the ceiling of the conference room approximately 1 square meter. 
The fire alarm system was immediately triggered and the Fire Brigade was called and responded timeously. All guests and staff at the hotel were evacuated in line with the fire evacuation procedure for approximately one hour until the building was deemed safe for use. Preliminary investigations by the hotel Maintenance and Engineering team indicate possibly a localised electrical fault could have caused the fire. 
A thorough investigation is underway. Six guests who were in the conference room when the incident happened were quickly evacuated together with all guests and hotel staff present in the building at that time. There were no casualties nor damage to property save for small affected part of the ceiling. We thank all our guests for co-operating with the staff at the time of this isolated fire incident.
