The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education says everything is in place for the commencement of the 2023 first term on 9 January.
Speaking to The Herald on Tuesday, ministry spokesperson Taungana Ndoro said they are expecting more teachers from the Public Service Commission (PSC). Said Ndoro:
<blockquote>
It’s all systems go ahead of schools opening on Monday, January 9. Our teachers and learners are ready and all is in place for a safe resumption of classes.
We are expecting to receive more teachers who will be employed by the Public Service Commission to complement the existing staff.
We do not expect any disturbances because we have now adjusted to the new normal.
The COVID-19 protocols put in place to curb the spread of the virus will still be in place so that we have got a safe learning environment in our schools.
Health workers have noted that the upgrade in hygiene and other standards, which includes better school water supplies to fight COVID-19, have also cut many other infections.

Ndoro said schools were now opening on a Monday, a departure from the traditional Tuesdays, as a way of maximising learning time.
National Association of Primary Heads (NAPH) president Cynthia Khumalo implored parents to pay school fees for their children on time. She said:
<blockquote>
To parents and guardians, we urge them to pay fees on time so that children get the resources that are required or even to pay in installments, not just to send children to school without paying anything.
To the learners, we urge them to work hard to be successful in their studies. On our part, we will be ready to give our all for the benefit of learners.

Teachers, Learners Ready For 2023 First Term - Ndoro

The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education is confident that its strategy to compensate for learning time lost because of coronavirus-induced lockdowns last year and early this year is working.
The government introduced extensive learning and remedial teaching for learners to catch up in preparation for public examinations.
That was after the first term kicked off in March following a second wave that hit the country in January.
When lessons resumed in March this year, classes were limited which meant that some learners only had in-person classes for either two or three days per week.
The director of communications and advocacy in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education Taungana Ndoro said:
<blockquote>Our catch-up strategy is impressive. We are proud of what we have put in place for continued quality and wholesome education for all Zimbabweans.</blockquote>
Ndoro also said the government was generally pleased that it had contained the virus in schools, as the situation could have been worse. He said:
<blockquote>We are pleased with the robust surveillance system we put in place to curb and manage the spread of COVID-19. So far we have recorded 90 per cent recoveries in our schools, which is impressive.
Going forward and into the holidays, we plead with our learners, parents, guardians, teachers and school staff to remain vigilant in the fight against COVID-19 so that we do not have another round of cases when schools open for the second term on 28 June.</blockquote>
During the first term, about 600 learners and teachers were infected with the disease. Of these 600 cases, Matabeleland South province had 252 cases at Sacred Heart Primary and Secondary Schools and another 156 at Embakwe High School.
In Manicaland, 216 learners and seven staff at St David’s Bonda High School tested positive, while another 46 cases were detected at George Silundika Secondary School in Matabeleland North.

Govt Impressed By Catch-up Strategy For Schools

The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education is drafting a new teaching strategy that will help learners catch up when schools are able to reopen for the new term.
The ministry’s director of communications and advocacy, Taungana Ndoro, revealed that the catch-up learning and teaching strategy would be reflected in the teachers’ plan books. Said Ndoro:
<blockquote>Catch-up programmes are planned for the time when schools reopen. We will follow an accelerated pattern of the teaching and learning and this strategy will be ready when schools open.
Remember the plan book of teachers? Now we plan with catch-up strategies in place. For instance, a topic on energy can be done at once under one subject instead of separately in geography, physics, chemistry or science.</blockquote>
Ndoro said stakeholders were already involved and details on the catch-up strategy are being communicated to teachers and school authorities for implementation. He added:
<blockquote>Some teachers and heads have already been apprised of the strategies and are preparing to roll out the programme as soon as schools reopen.</blockquote>
The reopening of schools for the First Term was postponed indefinitely over fears of Tropical Storm Chalane and a rise in coronavirus infections.
However, the last batch of O-level and A-level examinations was allowed to proceed throughout the month of January.

Crush Teaching & Learning Programme For Schools Drafted

Teachers have implored the government to cancel the 2021 First Term so that there is adequate time to prepare infrastructure ahead of the Second Term.
Progressive Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) president Takavafira said schools are not ready to offer a safe environment for teachers and pupils amid the COVID-19 pandemic and this necessitates the complete cancellation of the First Term. Said Zhou:
<blockquote>We wrote to the Government as PTUZ on December 15 last year with a plea to them to consider opening schools for Second Term so that we completely cancel the First Term.
This will give us enough time to prepare in terms of infrastructure and financial resources.
We have students that are still sitting for their examinations and we anticipate the whole process of marking and publishing the results will take the whole of this year.
Schools were instructed to come up with alternative spaces but most especially those in the rural areas do not have the capacity.
Government can assist by building prefabs in such schools and this needs planning.</blockquote>
Meanwhile, Private Schools Association of Zimbabwe secretary-general, Loice Magweba, said they will ask the government to allow schools with the capacity to reopen for the First Term.
This comes after the government last week indefinitely postponed the reopening of schools for the First Term, which was due to start tomorrow.
