The Victoria Falls City Council has urged residents to desist from blocking the smooth flow of water via the city’s drainage system as this results in flooding in residential areas.
A torrential downpour on Wednesday morning resulted in flooding in parts of the city.
On one hand, council authorities blame residents for the floods saying the storm drains are clogged by garbage comprising beer bottles and containers, plastic, diapers, used sanitary pads, rags and other items.
On the other hand, residents blame the local authority for the floods saying city fathers are failing to clear drains to prevent flooding.
The worst affected areas are the Hwange-Victoria Falls road whose eastern lane was destroyed near truck stop, Ingugama road in Mkhosana and Pioneer road in the industrial area, as well as some houses near the VID depot in Mkhosana.
Victoria Falls Town Clerk Ronnie Dube advised residents to remove any rubble in front of their premises as it is also contributing to the clogging of the drainage system. Said, Dube:

We wish to advise the residents to desist from clogging the drainage system with litter and not to block the drainage system using soil in the name of seeking passage across the drain to their houses as this defeats the whole purpose of a drain and causes flooding.
Council will carry out an extensive exercise to identify and fine all those who clog our drainage system with building materials.

Heavy Rains Cause Flooding Victoria Falls

More than 250 families were affected by flash floods that hit Beitbridge town recently, the Civil Protection Unit (CPU) has said.
The floods affected residents of the Dulibadzimu suburb following a torrential downpour last week.
Speaking to <a href="https://zbcnews.co.zw/2022/11/02/more-than-200-families-affected-by-early-flash-floods-in-beitbridge/">ZBC News</a>, one of Dulibadzimu residents said flash floods have become a perennial nightmare for them. He said:
<blockquote>
For us, the rainy season comes with nightmares. When it rains at night, we wake up in a pool of water right inside our bedrooms.
What is more worrying is that we experience this almost on an annual basis and we feel hard done by our council.
</blockquote>
Beitbridge CPU chairperson, Sikhangezile Mafu said the government is mobilising resources to continue assisting the families affected by the flash floods. She said:
<blockquote>
While we move in to assist affected families, it is necessary that the council employ a long-term solution because we cannot be witnessing such catastrophes each time it rains. We need to decisively deal with this.
</blockquote>
Beitbridge Mayor, Councillor Munyaradzi Chitsuke, said the long-term solution to the problem of flooding is to renew the suburb. Said Chutsuke:

Dulibadzimu floods are giving us sleepless nights as the council. We are working on strategies for building our capacity to relocate those houses in the long run.
Strategic partnerships with developers to renew this old suburb might be the ultimate solution.

Beitbridge Town Council is also mulling de-silting the Wamlala River which is now flowing into some parts of the Dulibadzimu suburb.

Flash Floods Affect 250 Families In Beitbridge

A violent storm hit Beitbridge on Wednesday night leaving dozens of families without food as water flooded homes.
No deaths or injuries were reported but residents are without water after power to water pumps was cut off.
The Beitbridge district civil protection unit (CPU) on Thursday sent teams to assess damage in Dulivhadzimo high-density suburb, the worst affected.
CPU has issued an alert to potentially vulnerable areas in Chikwarakwara and Shashi where flooding occurs when there are storms.
Addressing reporters on Thursday, Beitbridge head of the CPU Sikhangezile Ncube said:

We have tasked the municipality of Beitbridge to head a technical team that will make a detailed assessment.
The details we want should include the number of households, number of people, gender, and age of those affected. The immediate problem we have just established is the lack of food.
We are also looking for long-term solutions to end this problem we face perennially. We need a lasting intervention. It does not make sense that each year we fight floods in the same area.
</blockquote>
Beitbridge town clerk Loud Ramagkapola said the municipality was considering relocating the affected residents under its urban renewal programme.

Flash Floods Hit Beitbridge Town

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has commiserated with South Africa following the loss of hundreds of lives and destruction of infrastructure due to floods in KwaZulu Natal Province.
In a statement, President of Malawi and SADC chairperson Lazarus Chakwera said SADC stands with South Africa as the country makes effort to recover from the natural disaster. Chakwera said:
<blockquote>
SADC conveys its heartfelt condolences to the people and Government of the Republic of South Africa and the bereaved families and wishes those injured a quick recovery.
SADC stands in solidarity with the Government of South Africa and those affected by this disaster, as they undertake efforts to recover from the impacts of this disaster.
I wish to commend the Government of the Republic of South Africa and all those supporting the Government’s efforts for the unwavering dedication to saving lives and helping those affected by the disaster.
May I also call upon all our stakeholders and partners, within and beyond the region, to continue to support the recovery efforts, and provide the humanitarian assistance that is urgently required while also supporting the Government to build back better.

He also urged SADC countries to put in place measures that will reduce the effects of climate change on the region. Said Chakwera:

May I also call upon the SADC Member States to continue to put in place measures to scale up the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (2015-2030) by strengthening early warning capacities and capabilities, ensuring preparedness and enhanced resilience, while also promoting sustainable utilisation of the environment including reforestation and afforestation, as environmental integrity is critical for regulating and reducing the impacts of climate change and floods.
This should be coupled with our regional efforts to expeditiously operationalise and adequately resource regional coordination mechanisms to ensure coordinated efforts in dealing with natural and manmade disasters moving forward.

Heavy rains caused massive floods and landslides that killed more than 400 people in South Africa over a week ago.
Families have begun to hold funerals for those who died in the floods in KwaZulu-Natal but others are still searching for loved ones.

SADC Mourns South Africa's Floods Victims

Four Zimbabweans are reported to have died while others are missing following heavy rains and floods that hit South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal Province over the past few days.
Zimbabwe’s Consul-General to Johannesburg Melody Chaurura said they are working with the South African government to verify the numbers and identity of Zimbabweans killed in the floods. She said:
<blockquote>
We have received reports on our people who have died in KwaZulu Natal.
However, at this point, we cannot tell the total number or their identity since we are still verifying these reports with our host.
As the consulate, we are ready to help those who were affected to make the repatriation of their remains seamless.

Chairman of the Zimbabwe Community in South Africa, Nqabutho Mabhena, said a couple from Harare and two other people, one from Mutare and the other from Karoi perished in Pinetown near Durban when a house they were living in collapsed. Said Mabhena:

The couple had settled in the area from Harare, while two more people are from Mutare and Karoi.
As an organisation, we want to convey our heartfelt condolences to the grieving families.
So, far we are making all available plans to help them so that they get a decent burial.

According to <a href="https://twitter.com/MorningLiveSABC/status/1514454343495393280">SABC News</a>, the official death toll from the Kwazulu-Natal floods has risen to 306.
It said the number of people who have lost their lives rose on Wednesday as emergency workers managed to access more areas and located the bodies of victims.

Four Zimbabweans Die In KwaZulu-Natal Floods

Presenting a ministerial statement on the 2017/18 hydrological forecast in the National Assembly, Environment Minister Oppah Muchinguri said the 2017/18 rainfall season is expected to generate between 18 billion to 24 billion cubic metres of water at a time when the country’s dams can take in 14 billion cubic metres.
Said Muchinguri:
<blockquote>Our forecast is that we are expecting mostly normal to above normal rains culminating in high river flows and high inflows into our dams as well as high recharge to groundwater aquifers. The country is expected to generate between 18 to 24 billion cubic metres of water yet our national dam storage capacity is standing at 14 billion cubic metres against a situation where most of the dams are at nearly 70% full at a time when they should be at 50% full, as we approach the new season.</blockquote>

Muchinguri issues flood warning

The Meteorological Services Department(MSD) has said that heavy rains are expected in parts of the country starting from tomorrow. Heavy rains are expected in Matabeleland South, Masvingo and the southern parts of Midlands.
Said the Department:
<blockquote>A cloud system is projected to start entering Zimbabwe through Matabeleland provinces on Thursday leading to heavy rains in Matabeleland South, south of Midlands and Masvingo.
This is highly conducive to flash flooding and the public is advised to be vigilant especially in areas that have already borne the brunt of excessive water and flooding</blockquote>

Met Department warns of heavy rains and flooding in Matabeleland starting tomorrow

Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko assured donors and humanitarian agencies that the money and goods donated for victims of flooding in Matabaleland will not be abused or be diverted by the government. The Vice President made the assurance when he was pleading with the donor community for $200 million in aid.  The government has been accused of corruption and misappropriation of funds in the past.
Said Mphoko:
<blockquote>We are appealing to the international tax payers and to our own tax payers in Zimbabwe.
We are very very careful with your money and whatever gestures you will give us they will be put to proper use and will reach the affected people
We want to come up with a structure which will in actual fact also satisfy you, satisfy us, everybody.…. you think that we take your money and use for other things. But we want to make sure that your money goes to the affected people.</blockquote>

Government will not abuse donations for flood victims: Phelekezela Mphoko

The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has warned of potential flooding in Manicaland and Mashonaland Provinces. The department also said that cloudy conditions will persist.
Said MSD:
<blockquote>Flood threats have heightened in Manicaland Province as well as Mashonaland provinces so be warned. Drizzle and rain is expected in Masvingo Province, Matebeleland South, south of Manicaland and south of the Midlands Province, while thunder showers are expected for the rest of the country with heavier falls in the Eastern Highlands and Mashonaland provinces. Temperatures across the country should remain cool.</blockquote>

Met department warns of potential flooding in Manicaland & Mashonaland Provinces

Masvingo received 223mm of rainfall over the weekend, breaking a 100 year record in Zimbabwe. The record breaking rainfall has left most districts in the southern parts of the country battling with floods.
Speaking at a media briefing in Harare today, the Minister of Environment, Water and Climate, Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri revealed that Rupike in Masvingo received 223mm of rainfall within 24 hours, followed by Bikita which received 169mm and Zaka with 149mm.
In another media briefing, the Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, Saviour Kasukuwere said the country is faced with serious flooding challenges especially in the southern parts of the country. Kasukuwere said search  and rescue missions have been dispatched to rescue communities in the confluence of Tugwi and Mushandike rivers where 12 people were successfully airlifted today and another 11 rescued near Kwekwe, adding that at Lundi Mission School, children have been moved to higher ground awaiting airlifting.

Floods Update: Masvingo receives record breaking rains, Lundi Mission School pupils rescued

One person is feared dead, while 12 people were rescued by helicopter following floods in West Nicholson that resulted in a section of the Bulawayo-Beitbridge highway impassable for nearly 12 hours yesterday.
The floods occurred after Mbembesi River burst its banks at around 5 am cutting off traffic on the highway to Beitbridge and South Africa with vehicles being able to cross the bridge at 4PM. Speaking to The Chronicle, Matebeleland South police spokesperson, Inspector Philisani Ndebele confirmed the incident.

12 people rescued by helicopter as Mbembesi River floods shutting down highway to South Africa

Four people escaped death by a whisker when the Mazda pick-up truck there were travelling in was swept into the flooded Gweru river before they were rescued by other motorists.
The driver is said to have failed to negotiate the narrow bridge along Matobo road and his vehicle was overpowered by the current and was swept into the Gweru river.  The driver managed to get out of the truck and managed to clutch on a nearby willow tree about 500m from the truck leaving 28-year-old Itayi, his wife and two-year-old daughter who were behind the pick-up truck holding onto each other and screamed for help. They were rescued by two motorists Tichaona Jerera and Tichaona Hakunandava who were waiting for the river to subside.
The four were later taken to Gweru Provincial Hospital for monitoring observation.

Four escape death after pick-up truck is swept into the flooded Gweru river

Joina City released a statement on their Facebook page and confirmed that indeed they experienced floods due to a blocked City of Harare drain.
In the statement they said:
<blockquote>Dear Joina Family, please note due to last nights heavy rains we were negatively affected by a blocked COH drain which in turn meant water entering our building through our Julius Nyerere Entrance as it is low lying. We managed to rectify the situation last night as our Security members reacted timeously to the mishap. We would like to thank Nemchem International for their vigilance, our security department, our tenants TM Pick n Pay Zimbabwe, Edgars Zimbabwe, Coloursel Furniture,Talk City, Astro Africa, Pantachi Teens and all tenants who were affected as they stood with us during this unforseen challenge. Joina TM Pick n Pay Zimbabwe and all tenants have resumed normal trading hours and are open until 1900hrs for your shopping pleasure. Thank you.</blockquote>

Joina City speaks on flooding

Pictures of Joina City flooding have been circulating on social media. Pindula News was on site this morning and can confirm that the escalators were switched off as the cleaning crew removed water that had entered below one of the escalators. We are not yet sure if the flooding was caused by the rains or were from within the building but we will update you as soon as we get the information. You can view the images below:

5 schools were damaged by heavy rains in Matabeleland North Province, leaving a large number of children learning under trees. Two clinics and three dams were also destroyed.
Matabeleland North acting Provincial Administrator Mrs Enert Sithole said pupils from the affected schools were learning under trees appealed to well-wishers, development partners and the Government to help with resources to carry out repairs.
She said that Gwamayaya Primary School in Nkayi was entirely destroyed and lost property worth about $70 000. At Sivomo Primary in Nkayi, classroom blocks had their roofs worth $7 000 blown off and at Duhamzondo Primary, in Nkayi again, property worth $2 000 was destroyed. In Lupane’s Khabela School, three blocks worth $17 000 each were totally destroyed on December 23.

Children forced to learn under trees as heavy rains destroy 5 schools in Matebeleland North

Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) National FM presenter, Kanyemba Bhonzo escaped death after his brother’s Toyota Land Cruiser was swept away by water in a flooded Mudzi river in Mutoko.
Narrating the incident, Bhonzo said his brother could hardly see the road and he missed the bridge resulting in their car being swept away. You can watch the video of the incident below:
