The government has with immediate effect suspended customs duty and removed import permits and licences for grain, maize meal and wheat flour.
This was revealed in a joint statement on Monday by the Ministries of Finance and Economic Development, Industry and Commerce and Lands, Agriculture, Water and Rural Resettlement. The statement read in part:
<blockquote>In order to ensure the continued availability of essential foodstuffs on the market and to counter the effects of the drought that was experienced during the 2018/19 agricultural season, the Government of Zimbabwe has undertaken the following temporary measures, which will be implemented with immediate effect.
Removal of control of goods import permits for maize grain, maize meal, and wheat flour with immediate effect. The Ministry of Industry will put wheat flour on the Open General Import Licence (OGIL) with immediate effect.</blockquote>
The government has already gazetted Statutory Instrument 247 of 2019 – Customs and Excise (suspension/amendment) Regulations – to give legal effect to the new policy.
Meanwhile, some retailers have already hiked the price of mealie meal in response to a statement purportedly released by the Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) giving a new price structure for the product.

Govt Suspends Import Duty On Mealie Meal & Flour

One of the country’s largest bread manufacturers, Lobels Bakery on Friday reportedly shut down its Bulawayo plant due to a shortage of flour.
The company told its employees to go on leave for an indefinite period until the flour has been availed.
A Lobels worker who spoke to New Zimbabwe.com on condition of anonymity said:
<blockquote>Our Bulawayo plant closed on Friday. We have exhausted all our flour stocks. Management only said they will recall us after the situation has improved. They said we will not be paid while we are at home.</blockquote>
This is the second time within a month that Lobels Bakery has closed the plant owing to flour shortages.
In June, both the Harare and Bulawayo plants were closed. The two plants have a staff complement of 900 and 500 each respectively.

Lobels Forced To Close Bulawayo Bakery Again

While reports of prices of some goods being slashed have been celebrated by some on social media, there are others who are painting a gloomy picture on pricing trends in the country’s major supermarkets.
Last week it was reported that the price of Mazoe Orange Crush (2l) has been slashed from $21.00 to $16.50 at OK Zimbabwe, the price of a 2kg packet of self-raising four has been hiked from $14.50 to $27.00 at the same retail chain. See picture below:
