Sungura musician Gift Amuli said that he has abandoned his traditional healing calling and is now seeking help from churches.
A few months ago, the “Wamatuka” hitmaker announced that he had turned into a full-time traditional healer because of problems he was facing.
However, Amuli on Monday told NewsDay that he could not handle the traditional healing duties anymore and had turned to Christianity for help. He said:

I ventured into traditional healing because I was told that was the only solution to end my personal problems which included strange dreams that haunted my life ever since I was a child.
I was somehow eager to start my duties and that is why I publicised it unashamedly. My duties required me to operate away from home.
This meant I had to abandon my family and stay out of town at KwaMabasa. This became one of the problems that were now affecting me because I needed my family with me.
I strangely fell sick and each night I felt like someone was choking me until I realised that the path I was taking was difficult and not good for me.
A family member advised me to seek help from churches, which is why I went to Madzibaba Yakope’s shrine in Macheke to look for help. I now want to live a normal life as in the past.
</blockquote>
The Zvishavane-based singer said he is not abandoning his musical career but will keep on releasing both sungura and hip-hop tracks.
Amuli ventured into music in the late 90s forming Zvishavane Sounds and releasing such hits as “Wamatuka”, “By Ginya” and “Bhora Mberi”, among others.

Gift Amuli Abandons Traditional Healing Trade

Musician-cum-traditional healer Gift Amuli said that he regrets not fully using his spiritual “gift” early as he would have been able to “help a lot of people by now”.
Amuli is based in the gold-rich Zvishavane in the Midlands Province and illegal gold panners and dealers are reportedly flocking to his shrine. Said Amuli:
<blockquote>
My brother, things can be hectic sometimes. Gold miners and buyers are always at my shrine seeking my services. I am being forced to work during the day and at night.
</blockquote>
Amuli said he was forced to abandon the guitar and become a full-time traditional healer when his music career had stalled in 2014.
He said some of his band members left him and started their own things. Added the “Wamatuka” hitmaker:
<blockquote>
Growing up, I used to have these strange dreams in which I could see myself dressed as a traditional healer.
I also often got mysterious sicknesses and I then consulted a traditional healer who told me that I was possessed by a spirit.
I was lucky the traditional healer I consulted was genuine and did not steal my gift as other bogus healers would do in such a scenario.

The former Sungura musician had a white father but grew up in the custody of his maternal family. He said:
<blockquote>
Anything is possible in the supernatural world. It is not cast in stone that one can only become a traditional healer based on the powers obtained from patriarchal ancestors.
Anyone can receive the calling any time and the sources differ.
We have several traditional healers in the country and it does not mean they all had spiritually gifted ancestors. It can simply start with you.

Gift Amuli Regrets Not Using His Spiritual "Gift" Early

Sungura musician <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Gift_Amuli">Gift Amuli</a>, who recently branched into hip-hop, has revealed that he is now a full-time traditional healer.
Amuli of the Wamatuka fame confirmed to NewsDay Life &amp; Style that he is now a traditional healer. Said the Zvishavane Stars frontman:
<blockquote>
It took a long journey for me to become a traditional healer.
I had a lot of disturbing issues in my life until I was told that there is no way except being initiated into traditional healing. I am not ashamed of it that is why I publicise it, and I am happy too.
When it comes to my music career I’m still deciding on how to balance both because I love doing music and also I am now a full-time sangoma. People should come in their numbers because this month I’m dealing with divorce cases.
</blockquote>
While many of his family members have accepted his decision, others who are Christians are still in denial.
The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zvishavane">Zvishavane</a>-based musician started off with the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zig_Zag_Band">Zig Zag band</a> in the 1980s and in 2002 he did his first solo project, a five-track album titled Wedangwe which did not do well on the market. 
In 2003, he produced Munozvigona Sei, which catapulted him into the limelight. He once featured on a hip-hop track Svikiro together with Leefire and Tatman.

Gift "Wamatuka" Amuli Now Full-time Traditional Healer

Sungura musician Gift Amuli is seeking for financial assistance to raise US$2 000 for him to undergo surgery in South Africa.
Amuli was injured in a bizarre accident involving Gweru municipal police in January.
Speaking to NewZimbabwe.com, Amuli narrated his ordeal:
<blockquote>On the 22nd of January, I decided to hike to Shurugwi and boarded a Honda Fit which was about to take off.
As it was taking off, a team of Gweru Municipal security threw spikes under the car in a bid to stop it. I recall seeing the municipal officers throwing the spikes twice and the car lost control and hit a street light pole. The rest I do not remember.
The most serious injury occurred on my right humerus bone, I have been advised to get a surgeon to insert implants called anatomic elbow plates.
I am not fit for the stage at the moment, my hand is useless.</blockquote>
The humerus is the long bone in the upper arm. It is located between the elbow joint and the shoulder.
