The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has hindered the year’s biggest end of year event the Victoria Falls Carnival which will be suspended this year due to the containment measures set in place by the government to curb spreading the coronavirus, the Chronicle reports.
The development was communicated by the organisers of the event who through the carnival spokesperson Emmanuel Tivatyi said:
<blockquote>There’s no carnival this year. We called it quits after Government rejected our proposal to host the event due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The National Arts Council of Zimbabwe whom we had submitted our request to indicated that they wouldn’t be in a position to sanction the carnival given the insight from the Ministry of Health with regards to functions like festivals.
So definitely, we won’t be hosting the carnival. We don’t have ample time to prepare for the carnival as we don’t want to give our patrons a half-baked cake.
We’ll see next year. Definitely when we do host it, it’ll be something big and a major comeback.</blockquote>
Tivatyi reportedly hinted that next year’s carnival will have headliners like Master KG performing at the event. The late <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/ginimbi-to-hold-vip-vic-falls-carnival-after-party/">Genius Kadungure was the Harare International Carnival ambassador and he usually held parties in the resort town after the carnival</a>, the carnival is yet to reveal their new ambassador.

No Victoria Falls Carnival This Year

In a statement, the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) said the Harare International Carnival, which was scheduled for next month, has been cancelled.
The event had already been postponed twice. The statement reads:
<blockquote>The much-anticipated annual national event which was pencilled for December 2018 will not be held this year. The year 2018 was punctuated by numerous competing events that led to its postponement from its original October timing and we had hoped to have the event before year end.</blockquote>

Harare International Carnival Cancelled

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday,  Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA)’s chief executive Karikoga Kaseke said they have indefinitely postponed this year’s edition of the Harare International Carnival.
Kaseke said they have decided to postpone the event due to a Government ban on all gatherings because of the cholera outbreak. Said Kaseke:
<blockquote>This is a health situation which we are facing so we are postponing (the carnival) indefinitely because what if it (cholera outbreak) continues until year end? We are saying indefinite because we do not know for how long we are going to stay with this ban, but if it is not quickly lifted, it means maybe we will be looking at next month, which is November, and rains are coming …</blockquote>
Harare, however, successfully hosted Shoko Festival and Jacaranda Festival, among others, over the past two weeks despite the cholera fears.

Harare International Carnival Postponed Indefinitely

Speaking at a press conference in Harare yesterday, Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) boss Karikoga Kaseke said Zodwa Wabantu is welcome to join the 5th Harare International Carnival to be held from October 14 to 20.
Kaseke said the Ministry of Tourism which was at the time held by Patrick Zhuwao on an acting basis was wrong to ban Zodwa from participating. Said Kaseke:
<blockquote>There is nothing immoral about what Zodwa does. She was going to join the street procession decently dressed last year; it was wrong for the Ministry of Tourism to ban her from participating. It was Biggie Chinoperekwei who was going to bring Zodwa for a performance at Private Lounge and he asked if she could join the procession which we had agreed to.</blockquote>
Kaseke said 19 countries have already confirmed their participation including Brazil, Cuba, Jamaica, Egypt, United States, China and Ghana. Locally, 35 traditional groups, 28 contemporary arts groups, 36 schools, 12 tertiary institutions, 30 companies have confirmed attendance with 40 people having expressed interest to hold block parties. The carnival was supposed to be held in July but was postponed to October. This year’s main street party will be held on October 20.

Zodwa Wabantu Can Perform At Harare International Carnival, Zhuwao Was Wrong To Ban Her: Kaseke

Zimbabwe Tourism Authority chief executive officer Karikoga has said that the Harare International Carnival benefitted from the controversy on whether South African dancer Zodwa Wabantu was going to perform. Kaseke revealed the turnout for the carnival was quite high. Zodwa was banned from performing at the Carnival after former Studio 263 actress Anne Nhira petitioned for her to be banned.
Speaking to journalists on Monday, Kaseke said:
<blockquote>Apart from the peaceful environment, we also attribute this tremendous growth of the event to the controversy that surrounded Zodwa as many people including women attended the event anticipating seeing her.
Our recently held fourth edition of Harare International Carnival was ranked as the best carnival in Africa by an organisation based in the UK called Sacrotis.</blockquote>

Zodwa controversy was good for Harare International Carnival says Karikoga Kaseke

Harare International Carnival goers threw missiles at Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) boss Karikoga Kaseke and sponsor Justice Maphosa when they took to the stage to announce carnival float winners.
Missiles were also thrown as people impatiently waited for Soul Jah Love to take to the stage. Efforts by The Chronicle to get a comment from ZTA on the disturbance were futile yesterday as their phones were unreachable. An employee from Big Time Strategic Group who were responsible for the setup at the venue, told The Chronicle that not much damage had been done on the equipment which had been hired from neighbouring South Africa. The employee said that some of the glass doors at the VIP were damaged.

Carnival goers throw missiles at Kaseke

Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Walter Mzembi has revealed that the country will start getting the benefits from the Harare International Carnival in five to ten years time. Speaking on Monday, Mzembi said:
<blockquote>As government, we are optimistic that it will yield a return on investment in the next five to 10 years, hence the reason why the project has continued to receive major support from the treasury.
Government believes in the power of the carnival, particularly its potential to generate the much-needed revenue for the country. All the economic benefits we project will be a function of how much we invest now.</blockquote>

Zimbabwe to benefit from Harare International Carnival in 5 to 10 years

South African dancer and socialite, Zodwa Wabantu is no longer coming to Zimbabwe after she reached an agreement with Divine Assignments officials to move the tour to another yet to be announced date.
Zodwa made the announcement on her Instagram feed. The statement reads:
<blockquote>I am not going to Zimbabwe. I won though. South Africa it’s home (sic). We make friends with other nations.</blockquote>
The announcement comes after the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority sought to have Zodwa take part at the ongoing Harare International Carnival, but the Censorship Board stopped the arrangement and only cleared her for private functions by Devine Assignments.

Zodwa Wabantu no longer coming to Zimbabwe

Organisers of the Harare International Carnival, the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) said that the Samba Night that was scheduled for today will now take place on Friday due to changes in travel arrangements for Samba dancers who will now arrive in Zimbabwe by Thursday evening (tomorrow).
Speaking to The Herald, ZTA head of corporate affairs Sugar Chagonda said that they reached an agreement with their Samba Night partners Devine Assignments to shift the date to Friday. Cuban and Brazillian Samba dancers will be supported by local dancers Beverly Sibanda and Zoey Sifelani.

Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) Chief Executive Officer, Karikoga Kaseke, has revealed that noone will be arrested for public drinking during the Harare International Carnival in order to allow people to enjoy themselves freely.
Addressing journalists in Harare on Monday said:
<blockquote>This week is a happy week where we are going to have block parties we would like to do what Brazilians do in their countries where they have specific places to do their parties and people get entertained throughout the day and part of the night.

Noone will be arrested for public drinking during the carnival says Karikoga Kaseke

Speaking to HMetro after his interview on Star FM with the 326 duo of Phathisani Sibanda and KVG, Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) ceo Karikoga Kaseke revealed that acting Tourism Minister Patrick Zhuwao banned Zodwa Wabantu from performing at the Harare International Carnival without following due process.
Kaseke said that Zhuwao reached the decision to ban Zodwa without consulting them as the organisers of the carnival. He also said that he had not notified of the ban almost 24 hours after the letter responding to Anne Nhira’s complaint was written. Said Kaseke:
<blockquote>The minister responded to Nhira without consulting us, that is my only problem because we ZTA are the organisers of the carnival for the minister. And if this is what happened that he wrote to Nhira, because i have not seen the minister to confirm if that is what he did. If he did, he responded to misleading information. Nhira used hearsay information to mislead the minister.</blockquote>

Zhuwao banned Zodwa Wabantu without following due process

Zimbabwe Tourism Authority boss Karikoga Kaseke said that Swazi dancers acn come and dance topless although South African dancer Zodwa Wabantu cannot dance without her undergarments. He said this is because the Swazi will be showcasing their culture whereas Zodwa will be dancing without undergarments for entertainment.
Kaseke said this in an interview during Star FM’s 326 Express, hosted by Phathisani Sibanda and KVG. Said Kaseke:
<blockquote>No, that is a different case. They are showcasing their culture and even in Zimbabwe we have places where breasts are not sacred and we can allow that. However, for Zodwa, it is for entertainment not culture and she cannot do that in Zimbabwe. If we call the Swazis to showcase their culture, we cannot stop them from doing so, but they wear panties in Swaziland but to them breasts are not private parts.</blockquote>

Twitter reacts to Zodwa Wabantu's ban

Zimbabwe Tourism Authority chief executive officer Karikoga Kaseke has apologised to popular South African socialite and dancer Zodwa Wabantu for trying to force her to wear undergarments when she performs at the Harare International Carnival. Kaseke had said
<blockquote>I hope she will have her panties. If she cannot perform in panties then we don’t want her because chiefs (traditional leaders) will not like it.</blockquote>
However, Zodwa who has always made it public that she performs without any undergarments as she feels more comfortable, did not take this lying down and responded with
<blockquote>They invited me knowing what I wear and how I perform in public. Who are they to change me? They are really out of line. I have worked hard all of my life to establish myself as a brand and they can’t change who I am.
How did they invite me, knowing what I do and how I dress would offend them? They should have left me alone. I’m really not happy. They are out of their minds.”
We preach every day about woman empowerment, gender- based violence and woman abuse and they want to tell me how I should do things? Bayanya!</blockquote>
It seems as if Kaseke got the message as he backed down yesterday, saying that Zodwa was free to perform without her undergarments.

South African dancer and socialite, Zodwa Wabantu responded to the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA)’s request that she must wear panties when she performs at the Harare International Carnival.

Zodwa Wabantu not happy about ZTA's request to wear panties when she performs in Harare

South African socialite Zodwa Wabantu will grace this year’s edition of the Harare International Carnival. Speaking to NewsDay, Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) boss, Karikoga Kaseke said they will not allow Zodwa to perform in the street without her panties but said those who want to see her without them can go to Private Lounge.
Said Kaseke:
<blockquote>We will not allow her to perform without her panties, but we know she will be at the Private Lounge, so those who want to see her without panties can go there, but not in the streets.</blockquote>
This year’s carnival street party will be attended by top South African musicians alongside Winky D and Jah Prayzah.

Zodwa Wabantu to grace Harare International Carnival, Kaseke gives her rules

Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) head of corporate affairs Sugar Chagonda confirmed to The Herald  that they approached Werrason and have asked him to perform at this year’s Harare International Carnival which will run from September 1 to 10.
Chagonda said that they are still to sign a contract with the musician. Said Chagonda:
<blockquote>I cannot say much now because we have not finalised our arrangements. We are still to sign a contract with him, but we approached him and he opened room for talks. As soon as the required processes are complete, we will make an official announcement.</blockquote>
Chagonda said this year’s street party will be held on September 9 and will begin along Simon Muzenda Street (Fourth Street) and go down Robert Mugabe Road heading to Robert Mugabe Square where the carnival concert will take place. He also revealed that 20 countries have so far confirmed participation and these include Brazil, India, Cuba, Egypt, Malawi and Zambia.

Harare International Carnival organisers approach Werrason

Speaking to the Daily News, <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Tourism_Authority">Zimbabwe Tourism Authority</a> spokesperson, Sugar Chagonda revealed that the Harare International Carnival was not held this year due to lack of resources. He also revealed the new date for the carnival.
Said Chagonda:
<blockquote>We are going to hold the carnival next year between March and April in line with international trends in the world of carnivals. The major reason why we could not hold the carnival is because we could not mobilise adequate resources. We have now postponed this time around because our stakeholders said the beginning of the year would be more convenient.</blockquote>
Changoda said that they are confident they will be able to get adequate resources for next year’s event and that they will be resending invitations to potential participants such as Brazil, India, Nigeria and DRC.
