The U.S. ambassador to South Africa, Reuben Brigety, accused the country of providing weapons and ammunition to Russia for its conflict in Ukraine.
Reuben Brigety says the weapons were provided via a cargo ship linked to a sanctioned company that docked secretly at a naval base near Cape Town in December.
In response, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa revealed that an investigation into the Russian vessel&#8217;s visit to the nation&#8217;s main naval base had already begun with U.S. intelligence services before Brigety&#8217;s public announcement.
Brigety alleged that military equipment had been loaded onto the Lady R at the Simon&#8217;s Town naval base from December 6th to 8th and subsequently transported to Russia, raising concerns about South Africa&#8217;s supposed neutral position on the conflict and calls for its resolution. Brigety said in comments reported by multiple South African news outlets:

The arming of the Russians is extremely serious and we do not consider this issue to be resolved.
</blockquote>
If South Africa is discovered to be providing military aid to Russia, it could damage the relationship between the United States and a significant African partner, despite South Africa&#8217;s supposed neutrality on the Ukrainian conflict.
While Ramaphosa&#8217;s office denied any evidence of weapons being loaded onto the Lady R, which is connected to a sanctioned company involved in transporting military equipment for Russia. 
Ramaphosa declined to comment further, citing the need to wait for the investigation&#8217;s results when asked about the matter in Parliament by opposition leader John Steenhuisen.
MarineTraffic tracked the Lady R off the South African coast in early December, but the ship&#8217;s signal was lost on December 5th.
Satellite imagery obtained by AP indicates that a ship with a similar length, colour, and layout as the Lady R docked at the naval base the following day after it left, stayed there through December 8th, and returned to Russia on February 22nd.
In December, South African Defense Minister Thandi Modise stated that the ship only handled an &#8220;old order&#8221; for ammunition and that arms were offloaded rather than loaded onto it.
Despite South Africa&#8217;s claims of neutrality, recent moves including hosting Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov for talks, allowing Russian and Chinese warships to perform drills off its coast, and a potential visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin in August for a BRICS meeting have led to accusations of taking Russia&#8217;s side.

US Ambassador Accuses South Africa Of Arming Russia In Ukraine

All 21 African members of the Commonwealth support Zimbabwe&#8217;s return. Zimbabwe left the group in 2003 due to concerns over rights abuses.
President Mnangagwa sought re-admission in 2017, but the process has been slow over alleged human rights abuses in the southern African country.
The Commonwealth is finalising its report on Zimbabwe&#8217;s re-admission, and Baroness Scotland told Mnangagwa that continued repression in Harare was not helpful.
Addressing a post-Cabinet media briefing Tuesday, information minister Senator Monica Mutsvangwa said:

Baroness Scotland reported that the Secretariat was finalising the Report on Zimbabwe before submission to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting Chairperson, His Excellency President Paul Kagame.

She also said the UK is keen to continue strengthening relations with Zimbabwe. She said:

The President noted the progress that has been made in strengthening bilateral relations between Zimbabwe and the United Kingdom as evidenced by the increase in exchange visits, and renewed interest in promoting trade, investment and tourism opportunities across Zimbabwe’s major economic sectors.
The Right Honourable Mitchell highlighted his interest in mending Zimbabwe/UK relations and elevating these to a higher level.

Zimbabwe and the UK have had a complex relationship due to historical and political reasons. Relations deteriorated in the early 2000s due to disagreements over Zimbabwe&#8217;s land reform program and human rights abuses.
Since 2017, Zimbabwe has been pursuing a re-engagement policy with the West, including the UK, and both countries have expressed a desire to strengthen ties. However, concerns over human rights abuses and the pace of reforms remain.

21 African Countries Support Zimbabwe's Return To Commonwealth After 2003 Exit

South Africans want Britain to return the Star of Africa diamond, weighing 530 carats, set in the royal sceptre for King Charles III&#8217;s coronation on Saturday.
The diamond was discovered in South Africa in 1905 and presented to the British monarchy by the colonial government when the country was under British rule. Calls for the diamond&#8217;s return are part of a global conversation about returning colonial-era artwork and artefacts.

Mothusi Kamanga, a Johannesburg lawyer and activist, is promoting an online petition that has gathered approximately 8,000 signatures, calling for the return of the diamond. He said:

The diamond needs to come to South Africa. It needs to be a sign of our pride, our heritage and our culture.
I think generally the African people are starting to realise that to decolonise is not just to let people have certain freedoms, but it’s also to take back what has been expropriated from us.

The diamond officially called Cullinan I, and is in the royal sceptre, was cut from the Cullinan diamond, a 3100-carat stone mined near Pretoria. The Imperial State Crown also contains a smaller diamond, Cullinan II. All crown jewels, including the sceptre and the Imperial State Crown, are kept in the Tower of London. A replica of the Cullinan diamond is displayed at the Cape Town Diamond Museum.
Johannesburg resident Mohamed Abdulahi believes the diamond should be returned because it was taken during a time of oppression. Others, like Dieketseng Nzhadzhaba, don&#8217;t feel strongly about it and believe times have changed, making the issue irrelevant.
The value of a diamond depends on many factors, including its carat weight, cut, colour, and clarity. However, the 530-carat diamond known as the Star of Africa is considered priceless due to its historical significance and rarity. It is one of the largest and most famous diamonds in the world and has been estimated to be worth billions of dollars.

King Charles III's Coronation: South Africans Want UK To Return 530-carat Diamond

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said he is travelling to the <a class=" MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">United Kingdom</a> (UK) to attend the coronation of King Charles III. The Coronation will take place on Saturday 6 May at Westminster Abbey in London.
Mnangagwa told his supporters in Harare:

Hameno zvakahofungwa nemwana waMambokadzi. Mangwana ndoinda kunovona achigadzwa, Charles. Ndikati ko zvino mondikoka kuzovona kugadzwa kwaCharles imwi muna maSanctions zvikahi aah tabvisa vuyai henyu mambo toenda, get respected because we stand our ground.

Loosely translated, Mnangagwa said he didn&#8217;t know what the Queen&#8217;s son was thinking. He said he is going to the UK tomorrow to attend the coronation of King Charles III. He mentioned asking how he could travel with sanctions in place, but UK authorities told him the sanctions had been removed.
Zimbabwe has been under UK sanctions since the turn of the millennium when the southern African country embarked on the fast-track land reform program which was marred by gross human rights abuses.
In September 2022, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International announced that <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2022/09/16/mnangagwa-not-on-uk-sanctions-list">President Mnangagwa was not on the UK sanctions list</a> and could travel to Britain. This followed reports that he would not attend Queen Elizabeth II&#8217;s funeral on September 19, 2022, due to sanctions. A statement from the ministry&#8217;s spokesperson, Livit Mugejo, confirmed that Mnangagwa had appointed <a class=" MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">Frederick Shava</a> to represent him at the <a class=" MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">state funeral</a>. He said;

Contrary to fake media statements purportedly coming from Buckingham Palace circulating in the social media space, the Ministry would like to put it on record that His Excellency the President Cde Dr ED Mnangagwa and all his Cabinet Ministers are not on the United Kingdom sanctions list.
The President and His Cabinet Ministers can enter and leave the UK at will on business or personal matters.

The UK has over the years reviewed the sanctions list, adding and or removing some individuals or companies linked to the ruling ZANU PF party.
President Mnangagwa is attending <a class=" MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">King Charles</a> III&#8217;s coronation despite <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2023/04/25/british-mps-advocate-cancellation-of-mnangagwas-invitation-to-king-charles-iiis-coronation">calls from the House of Lords in England to cancel his invitation</a> due to alleged <a class=" MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">human rights abuses in Zimbabwe</a>. He sees the invitation as a positive step towards improving relations between Zimbabwe and the United Kingdom. He met with the UK Ambassador to Zimbabwe on April 17 to discuss the matter. However, some British Members of Parliament believe that inviting the <a class=" MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">Zimbabwean leader</a> was a mistake.

President Mnangagwa Says He's Attending The Coronation Of King Charles III

President <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Emmerson_Mnangagwa">Emmerson Mnangagwa</a> (ED) believes that the participation of the European Union, the United States, and the United Kingdom at the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_International_Trade_Fair">Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF)</a> is proof that his efforts to improve relations with other countries are working.
He made this statement to journalists after touring the fair, which ended on Saturday, 29 April 2023. The president told journalists:

The Americans are here, the British are here, the EU is here. What else would we want? Everybody is here. So this engagement and re-engagement policy is bearing fruits. Perhaps, they heard that the Majesty is coming. That’s why they are here.

Zimbabwe’s relations with the West have been strained due to political and economic issues, resulting in sanctions being imposed on the southern African nation. President Emmerson Mnangagwa has attempted to improve relations through his re-engagement policy, but progress has been slow due to concerns over human rights and governance. Some positive developments have occurred, such as the resumption of development aid by the EU and new funding pledges by the UK, but there are still obstacles to the full normalization of relations.
This year, over 20 countries participated at the ZITF, compared to only 13 last year. Angola, Belarus, Botswana, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Netherlands, Nigeria, South Africa, Sweden, Tanzania, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States of America and Zambia were the countries that participated.
The EU was the largest exhibitor, occupying 33 square meters of exhibition space, as reported by ZITF Company chairman Busisa Moyo. There were 533 exhibitors in total, taking up 46 631 square meters of exhibition space, which is 97% of the available space. This is an improvement from last year when the total space occupied was 45 786 square meters.
King Mswati III of the Royal Kingdom of Eswatini officially opened the fair and emphasized the need for greater trade and investment cooperation between Zimbabwe and Eswatini. He noted that while Eswatini imports over USD$2 billion worth of goods annually from Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe imports over USD$5.6 billion worth of goods annually from Eswatini. Despite this, trade and investment between the two countries remain insignificant compared to their economic connections with the rest of the world. Therefore, he called for closer trade and investment collaboration between the two countries.

US, UK, EU Participation At ZITF Proof That Re-engagement Is Working  - ED

Zimbabwe has ditched <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/zim-engages-2-usa-public-relations-companies-for-over-us1-million/">American consultancy firms</a> engaged more than three years ago to help thaw diplomatic relations with the United States.
In 2019, the then Foreign Affairs minister <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Sibusiso_Moyo">Sibusiso Moyo</a> hired four lobbyists – BTP Advisers, Mercury International Limited, Ballard Partners and Avenue Strategies – paying them millions of dollars, according to The NewsHawks.
<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Frederick_Shava">Frederick Shava</a>, Moyo’s successor, has indicated that bilateral engagements between Zimbabwe and the United States will now be held at the government level. Shava told The NewsHawks:

Let me say from the onset that there have been a few consultancy companies who have come forward to offer their services to pose the two governments to talk to each other.
They have come and gone and let me say also that the best interaction between the United States and Zimbabwe is still government official channels and this is what we are encouraging. As Zimbabwe we are talking to Congress, we are talking members of the House of Representatives and recently as you probably followed Zimbabwe was invited to the second US-Africa Summit in Washington DC albeit at the level of minister of Foreign Affairs and we are still hoping that this warming up will improve and Zimbabwe will be invited at the level of the Head of State. I just want to say that the emphasis is now on the interactions between governments without third parties as much as possible.
</blockquote>
Zimbabwe and America have endured a sower relationship since the millennium when the Western nation imposed <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Democracy_and_Economic_Recovery_Act_Of_2001">sanctions (ZIDERA)</a> on Zimbabwe following the fast-track land reform programme which was marred by human rights violations.
The American consultancy firms, which Zimbabwe has ditched, were expected to mend relations between the two nations as the southern African nation embarked on the diplomatic re-engagement drive.
But the move yielded little as Washington demanded more political governance reforms such as upholding the rule of law, respecting property rights and overhauling electoral laws.

Zimbabwe Has Ditched American Consultancy Firms

The United States of America on Thursday, 15 September, announced the removal of 11 individuals from the Zimbabwe sanctions list.
The <a href="https://home.treasury.gov/news/press-releases/jy0953">U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC)</a> has, however, designated one Zimbabwe individual on the Specially Designated Nationals List (SDN List) under the Zimbabwe sanctions program.
The US Treasury said sanctions do not target the Zimbabwean people, the country of Zimbabwe, or Zimbabwe’s banking sector.
It said the sanctions program targets human rights abusers and those who undermine democratic processes or facilitate corruption. A statement seen by Pindula News reads in part:
<blockquote>
The 11 individuals being removed from the SDN list are either deceased or have been deemed to no longer undermine Zimbabwe’s democratic processes and institutions.
Each year, the U.S. Government removes hundreds of individuals and entities from the SDN List. Each removal is based on a thorough review.
</blockquote>
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe Republic Police’s Deputy Commissioner for Administration, Stephen Mutamba, has been added to the sanctions list.
<h2>Why was Mutamba designated by OFAC?</h2>
OFAC said Mutamba was designated pursuant to Executive Order (E.O.) 13469 for his role in undermining Zimbabwe’s democratic processes and institutions. It added:
<blockquote>
Over the past two years, Mutamba has taken actions that threaten and undermine legitimate political parties that oppose the policies of the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) party.
In 2020, Mutamba supported Zimbabwe security services’ use of pressure and intimidation on prominent opposition figures.
Also in 2020, Mutamba supported the uneven enforcement of a COVID-related curfew, encouraging security forces to limit opposition activities and did not allow for foreign national officials located in Zimbabwe to meet with Zimbabwean opposition parties or civil society groups.
In 2021, Mutamba advocated that vote tallies not be displayed outside polling locations and that international observers should not be allowed to monitor the 2023 elections.

<h2>The implications of the designation</h2>
All Mutamba&#8217;s property and interests in property located in the United States have been blocked. OFAC said:
<blockquote>
As a result of today’s designation, all property and interests in property of these persons located in the United States or in the possession or control of U.S. persons are blocked and must be reported to OFAC.
In addition, any entities that are owned, directly or indirectly, 50 per cent or more in the aggregate by one or more of such persons are also blocked.
All transactions by U.S. persons or within (or transiting) the United States that involve any property or interests in property of blocked or designated persons are prohibited, unless authorized by a general or specific license issued by OFAC, or otherwise exempt.
These prohibitions include the making of any contribution or provision of funds, goods, or services by, to, or for the benefit of any blocked person and the receipt of any contribution or provision of funds, goods, or services from any such person.

U.S. Sanctions: Top ZRP Officer Added, 11 Others Removed From List

The Zimbabwean Embassy in South Africa has distanced itself from a statement issued by the ZANU PF Sandton chairperson Advocate Simba Chitando who alleged that he had a meeting with the Ambassador of Zimbabwe to South Africa to discuss a bill that will see South Africa paying hefty charges for using Zimbabwe airspace.
Chitando said the Bill shall be called the Dr Motsoaledi Aviation Bill.

1. The Embassy of the Republic of Zimbabwe to the Republic of South Africa is aware of a statement that is circulating on social media circles bearing the crest of the Office of Advocate Simba Chitando, dated 30 December 2021 and titled &#8220;ZANU PF SANDTON DISCUSSION: THE DR MOTSOLEDI AVIATION BILL&#8221;.
2. In its opening paragraph, the document claims that a meeting took place on 23 December 2021 between the ZANU PF Sandton Branch, the ZEP Leaders and the Zimbabwean Ambassador to South Africa. 
This is a total falsehood. The Zimbabwean Ambassador has never had a meeting with the ZANU PF Sandton Branch. The Embassy denounces in the strongest terms this attempt to associate it with this unhelpful statement.
3. The Embassy wishes to inform that a meeting that took place on 23 December 2021 was between the Ambassador and some ZEP leaders as part of the Embassy&#8217;s engagement with holders of the ZEP. That meeting was solely confined to ZEP-related issues and aspects and nothing else. The meeting was non-partisan.
4. The Embassy is deeply concerned by the content and tone of this statement which is diametrically opposite to the maintenance and strengthening of the excellent bilateral relations between Zimbabwe and South Africa.
5. The Embassy reiterates the government of Zimbabwe&#8217;s acknowledgement and acceptance of the sovereign decision by the government of the Republic of South Africa to not renew the Zimbabwean Exemption Permit (ZEP) on its expiry at 31 December 2021 and to extend a 12 month grace period to ZEP holders to regularize their stay in South Africa in accordance with the relevant laws and regulations of the country.
6. The Embassy urges Zimbabwean nationals in South Africa to comport themselves in a manner that promotes the good relations between the two countries&#8217; peoples and governments.

Zimbabwe Embassy In SA Distances Itself From ZANU PF's Chitando's Position On Permits

The European Union (EU) has maintained that Zimbabwe must fully implement the 2018 election observer mission recommendations (EOM) before the 2023 polls.
The call was made when Zimbabwe’s Foreign Affairs minister Frederick Shava on Monday met the EU Commissioner for International Partnerships Jutta Urpilainen for the first time in Brussels. In a tweet on Monday, Urpilainen said:

First meeting with FM Zimbabwe @ShavaHon. A comprehensive discussion covering bilateral relations, COVID-19 response, future co-operation and complex regional situations. I reiterated the need to fully implement political and economic reforms, including EOM recommendations.
</blockquote>
In a preliminary statement after the disputed 2018 polls, the EU observer mission noted electoral malpractices such as “bias in State media” in favour of Zanu PF, adding this meant “that a truly level playing field was not achieved.”
Some of the reforms include the need to implement recommendations by the Motlanthe Commission of Inquiry which investigated the post-election violence of August 1, 2018, including ensuring that those responsible for abuses are held accountable.
Last week, the Zimbabwe Election Support Network which has been tracking progress on the implementation of the EOM recommendations, expressed concern that “most remain unattended at a time when Zimbabwe is barely two years away from yet another set of harmonised elections in 2023.”
Opposition MDC Alliance’s secretary for international relations Gladys Hlatshwayo Tuesday welcomed Urpilainen’s demands for electoral reforms noting that the democratic space was shrinking. 

But Zanu PF acting spokesperson Mike Bimha said electoral reforms did not happen overnight adding that the government is keen on re-engagement and reforms.

EU Says Zimbabwe Must Fully Implement 2018 EOM Recommendations Before 2023 Polls

Opposition MDC Alliance leader, Nelson Chamisa has blamed the governing ZANU PF for the land dispute between Chinese miners and villagers in Uzumba and elsewhere around the country.
He said political elites were disregarding the interests of the ordinary man as they are benefitting from Chinese mining projects.
His remarks come at the backdrop of a land feud between villagers in Uzumba and a Chinese-owned Heijin mining company in which about 70 families are set to be evicted.
<a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/09/27/villagers-dont-have-title-deeds-to-communal-land-chinese-miners/">The company recently bragged that it had the authority to displace the villagers</a> because they had no title deeds to the land they were occupying.
Chamisa told NewsDay that the same unsettling pattern happened in Chilonga, Chiredzi in Masvingo province, the diamond-rich area of Chiadzwa, ethanol projects in Chisumbanje, and other resource-rich areas where locals were displaced. He said:

It is not an isolated incident, these things which are happening in Uzumba and Mutoko. It is a system where the ordinary people are disregarded and thrown off their land for the benefit of the elite.

Presidential spokesman George Charamba recently took to social media, accusing the MDC Alliance of pretending to care about the welfare of locals.
Chamisa dismissed Charamba’s assertions saying he was displaying “a mercenary mindset”. He added:

He has a mercenary mindset. We are a people-centred party which believes that Zimbabwe is not for sale and should not be sold. On the other hand, they are selling the country to their friends at the expense of our people. They sold Chisumbanje, Uzumba, Chilonga and parts of Hwange and they do it without shame.

There is a growing concern in some quarters that China is becoming the new imperialist that is in Africa to plunder and loot resources.
China is accused of extending loans and making generous donations to Africa, Zimbabwe in particular, to clear the path for Chinese companies to exploit the country’s natural resources. 
However, <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/09/27/china-assistance-to-zimbabwe-is-not-in-exchange-for-natural-resources/">China refuted the claims</a> saying its assistance is never offered in exchange for natural resources or with natural resources as collateral.

Villagers vs Chinese Miners Feud: Chamisa Says ZANU PF Sold Out

Botswana&#8217;s presidency has ordered an official inquiry into livestock theft on his country’s border with Zimbabwe, the government announced on Monday.
Acting President Slumber Tsogwane named a nine-member commission for the inquiry to be conducted in Bobirwa constituency, across the Tuli River in Matabeleland South which for several kilometres serves as the border between the two countries.
A statement accompanying the appointment of the commission said:

4. The terms of reference of the Commission of Inquiry shall be as follows — 
(a) To establish the problem of livestock rustling in the Bobirwa villages along the Botswana/Zimbabwe border, and determine the extent of the problem; 
(b) To establish how long the problem of livestock rustling in the area has been in existence, what causes or caused it, and who are the key players; 
(c) To further establish, from the perspective of the community what was done to address the problem and any mitigating measures initiated by the community to deal with the problem; 
(d) To establish the existence of any cross-border livestock rustling management/mitigation strategy by law enforcement agencies, and what gaps exist in that strategy; 
(e) To establish what compromises the effectiveness of the management/mitigating strategy referred to above; 
(f) To seek input from the community as to what the socio-economic, political, security risks, etc., that may result from the livestock rustling are; its consequences on the livelihood of people in the area; and the measures that can be put in place to mitigate these risks; 
(g) To establish whether or not there has been a displacement of farmers in the area as a result of the livestock rustling and how it has affected the diplomatic relations of the two countries; 
(h) To engage the Ambassador of Zimbabwe based in Botswana in recognition of being a critical stakeholder in the matter; 
(i) Based on the findings from paragraphs (a) to (g) of the Terms of Reference, make appropriate and long lasting recommendations to His Excellency the President on the mitigation measures to address the problem of livestock rustling in some villages in the Bobirwa constituency along the Botswana/Zimbabwe border;

Tensions among communities on either side of the border have been a common feature over the last decade – but most caused by Botswana’s shoot-to-kill policy when Zimbabwean farmers’ livestock stray into its territory. 
Botswana has defended the policy saying it is stopping the spread of foot and mouth disease.

China has said the United States of America (U.S.) and some Western countries owe numerous historical debts. The Asian country was responding to calls by several countries during the 48th session of the Human Rights Council for attention on the impact of the poisonous legacy of colonialism. 
This comes amid growing concern by some African citizens on China&#8217;s way of doing business saying it was becoming the new colonial master. Pindula News presents the statement by China&#8217;s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Zhao Lijian.

Zhao Lijian: A few Western countries including the US owe numerous historical debts. Through slavery, trans-Atlantic slave trade, colonialism, expulsion and slaughter of indigenous peoples, these countries made their fortune and amassed initial funds for capital development. In the process, they caused countless tragedies. It is even more poignant that the former colonies, ethnic minorities and indigenous peoples that were sacrificed by colonialism in the old days are now still victims of its poisonous legacy. They suffer from economic exploitation and systemic racial discrimination and could not enjoy basic human rights such as equal right to subsistence and development. 
The period 2021-2030 is the Fourth International Decade for the Eradication of Colonialism. Countries that once practiced or benefited from colonialism should show the political will and courage to shoulder responsibility for their historical crimes and remove the negative impact of colonialism. The international community should take the coming decade as an opportunity to jointly eliminate poisonous legacies of colonialism, promote and protect human rights, and uphold international justice.

U.S., Western States Owe Numerous Historical Debts - China

Captain Bill Urban, the spokesman for U.S. Central Command, said the U.S. airstrike killed an Islamic State “planner.”
It is not clear whether the planner killed by the US had been involved in Thursday’s attack near the city’s airport, where thousands of people had been trying to reach evacuation flights to escape the incoming Taliban regime.
The Kabul bombing came as the U.S. was in the final days of evacuating its personnel from Afghanistan following a two-decade-long war with the Taliban.

We're Not Done With You Yet - Biden Tells ISIS-K

The President of Botswana Dr Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi has declared seven (7) days of mourning the founding President of the Republic of Zambia Dr Kenneth Kaunda.
Kaunda, also known as KK died at a hospital in Zambia this Thursday aged 97.
Masisi decreed that all flags must fly at half-mast during the mourning period. In a statement, Masisi paid tribute to the late Dr Kaunda’s four-day State Visit to Botswana, from May 21st to May 24th, 1968.
The visit ushered in a period of unparalleled excellent bilateral relations between Botswana and Zambia.
He also spoke highly of the role he played in the liberation of most southern African countries.
It was during Dr Kaunda’s presidency, that bilateral relations between Botswana and Zambia blossomed over the decades, and so did the personal relations between him and the founding President of Botswana Sir Seretse Khama.
In his message of heartfelt condolences, President Masisi expressed profound sorrow and commiserates with the mourning nation of the Republic of Zambia.
He described Kaunda as an iconic statesman of the highest credentials and selfless dedication to the interests of his own country as well as the wellbeing of neighbours and humankind at large.
Masisi described Kaunda as Botswana’s best friend during the worst of times when the country was battling to find itself during the trying times of early independence when it needed friends the most.
President Masisi said the charismatic former President of Zambia is a grave loss to his compatriots and to all peace-loving people, in Botswana and elsewhere.

The Political Actors Dialogue (POLAD) is scheduled to engage the lower house of the United States Congress, the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee on the impact of sanctions in Africa this Tuesday.
The POLAD Committee on International Relations and Re-engagement set aside Africa Day which will be commemorated this Tuesday to speak on the impact of sanctions on the continent.
POLAD International Relations and Reengagement committee Rapporteur Mr Kwanele Hlabangana said:
<blockquote>_The Chairperson of the said Sub-Committee, Representative, Karen Bass (D-CA) has circulated a Memo of which POLAD is listed as a Witness in the said Hearing. The Invitation for POLAD to be a Witness in the said Hearing has been extended to POLAD’s International Relations and Re-engagement Committee._
_The POLAD International Relations and Re-engagement Executive Committee is seized with the matter and is currently meeting in Harare compiling a Draft Dossier for submissions. We consider this window of opportunity, considering that only four (Witnesses to the Hearing have been cited in the Memorandum, of which POLAD is the only African body invited, to be of utmost importance in the International Relations and Re-engagement efforts of both Government and POLAD, particularly in the lifting of Sanctions in Zimbabwe._</blockquote>
The POLAD International Relations and Re-engagement Committee has already engaged SADC Executive Secretary, Dr Stergomena Lawrence Tax on the role being played by the organisation.
POLAD is a platform initiated by President Emmerson Mnangagwa which groups Zimbabwean political parties whose leaders participated in the 2018 presidential election.
Zimbabwe argues that sanctions imposed on the country at the turn of the millennium are responsible for the economic collapse.
The international community refutes the allegations saying corruption was the leading factor contributing to economic deterioration.

POLAD Engaging US Congress Over Sanctions

Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards released a chilling propaganda video that depicts the United States (US)&#8217; Capitol being blown up by a missile and its soldiers ‘liberating’ Jerusalem.
This comes amid growing tensions between the United States and Iran on issues mainly to do with the 2015 nuclear deal and sanctions.
After the video aired, Iran&#8217;s supreme leader on Sunday criticized the country&#8217;s foreign minister, who said in a leaked interview that the elite Revolutionary Guards had more influence in foreign affairs and Tehran&#8217;s nuclear dossier than him. Watch the video below for more.

United States president, Joe Biden has said Russian president, Vladimir Putin whom he called a killer will pay a price for meddling in US elections.
The accusations of election manipulation were first raised in 2016 when Russia allegedly aided Joe Biden&#8217;s predecessor, Donald Trump in his contest against Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.
According to US intelligence, Putin and other senior officials &#8220;were aware of and probably directed&#8221; Russia&#8217;s influence operation to sway the 2020 vote in Trump&#8217;s favor.
It concluded, however, that the election results were not compromised.
In an interview with ABC News, Biden was asked about a US intelligence report that the Russian leader tried to harm his candidacy in the November 2020 election and promote that of Donald Trump. In response, the 78-year-old Biden said:
<blockquote>He will pay a price.</blockquote>
Asked if he thought Putin, who has been accused of ordering the poisoning of opposition leader Alexei Navalny and other rivals, is a &#8220;killer,&#8221; Biden said:
<blockquote>I do.</blockquote>
The comments were aired as the US Commerce Department announced it was toughening export restrictions imposed on Russia as punishment for Navalny&#8217;s poisoning.
The latest sanctions add to US penalties imposed on Moscow since Russia&#8217;s annexation of Crimea in 2014.
Russia responded by summoning its envoy home, but stressed that it wanted to prevent an &#8220;irreversible deterioration&#8221; in relations. The Russian foreign ministry said:
<blockquote>The Russian ambassador in Washington, Anatoly Antonov, has been invited to come to Moscow for consultations conducted with the aim of analyzing what should be done and where to go in the context of ties with the United States.</blockquote>
Meanwhile, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told RIA Novosti that &#8220;responsibility for further deterioration of Russian-American ties fully rests with the United States.&#8221;
On the other hand, the US State Department noted the Russian move and said the United States will &#8220;remain clear-eyed about the challenges that Russia poses.&#8221;
White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters that president Biden &#8220;has been clear that the United States will also respond to a number of destabilizing actions,&#8221; by Russia.
Biden confirmed that he had a phone call adding he had a &#8220;long talk&#8221; with Putin after taking office in January. Biden said:
<blockquote>The conversation started off, I said, &#8216;I know you and you know me. If I establish this occurred, then be prepared&#8217;.</blockquote>
Despite his thoughts about the Russian leader, Biden said &#8220;there are places where it&#8217;s in our mutual interest to work together.&#8221; Speaking on the nuclear treaty, Biden said:
<blockquote>That&#8217;s why I renewed the START agreement with him. That occurred while he&#8217;s doing this, but that&#8217;s overwhelmingly in the interest of humanity, that we diminish the prospect of a nuclear exchange.</blockquote>
Vyacheslav Volodin, the speaker of Russia&#8217;s lower house of parliament, denounced Biden for agreeing with the description of Putin as a &#8220;killer&#8221; adding &#8220;attacks on (Putin) are attacks on our country.&#8221;
Tensions between the former Cold War rivals have soared in recent months over hacking allegations and US demands that Russia free Navalny.

Zimbabwe and the Russian Federation Thursday celebrated the 40th anniversary of their &#8220;time-tested&#8221; diplomatic relationship.
In a statement, Zimbabwe&#8217;s Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Professor Amon Murwira said:
<blockquote>The time-tested relationship between the Republic of Zimbabwe and the Russian Federation whose longevity is being celebrated today, has again been manifested in the Government and the people of the Russian Federation’s assistance to Zimbabwe since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, through the provision of much needed equipment and lifesaving vaccines to help in the fight against the devastating global scourge.
The date 18 February 2021 marks the 40th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Zimbabwe and the Russian Federation.
The history of the two countries pre-date Zimbabwe’s struggle for independence during which the Russian Federation played a pivotal role by providing moral, diplomatic and material support for the struggle that eventually gave birth to a new Zimbabwe in April 1980.</blockquote>
Murwira also said Zimbabwe and Russia continue to enjoy each other’s support at various fora, including the United Nations, in pursuit of a shared vision of a just and peaceful world order in light of the increasing threat to global peace and security.

Zimbabwe, Russia Celebrate 40th Anniversary Of "Time-tested Relationship"

NewsDay, a local publication, has said a Daily Maverick report which claims there are cartels engaging in corruption at the expense of the country is likely to influence the United States&#8217; decisions on sanctions on Zimbabwe.
The US has, since 2002, traditionally renewed its sanctions on Zimbabwe every first quarter of the year and the position of the Joe Biden administration will be revealed soon.
Meanwhile, influential US Senator Jim Risch has said they were taking the corruption reports seriously, especially given that it came at a time the country reviews its sanctions regime.
Risch, a Republican Senator who chairs the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, tweeted on Thursday that the report came at the most appropriate time given that the committee was starting to make considerations regarding the renewal of sanctions on Zimbabwe. He said:

A timely report released by @dailymaverick exposes the destructive effects that elite cartels play in robbing the country’s future. The report which covers the period 12017 to date <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/02/09/mnangagwa-identified-as-one-of-cartel-bosses-report/">claims that President Emmerson Mnangagwa is one of the cartel bosses</a> responsible for siphoning the country&#8217;s resources.
Mnangagwa&#8217;s government was hopeful, wishing and praying that the new United States administration under Joe Biden would normalise the strained relations with Zimbabwe.
Some analysts, however, say the United States does not change its foreign policies just like that because they are meant to protect their interests.
They add that nothing is likely to change in the case of sanctions on Zimbabwe particularly because Biden was among the senators who pushed for the imposition of sanctions in the first place.

Report On Cartels Crucial For US Sanctions On Zimbabwe - ND

MDC-T, an opposition party in Zimbabwe has said the country&#8217;s continued international isolation was hurting the general public contrary to the belief that it hurts political elites in the ruling ZANU PF.
These remarks are made following the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/02/01/uk-announces-sanctions-on-zimbabwean-security-chiefs/">United Kingdom&#8217;s recent imposition of sanctions</a> of four Zimbabwean security chiefs who are accused of presiding over institutions which grossly violated human rights since 2017.
MDC-T&#8217;s National Standing Committee held its virtual meeting and condemned the sanctions and ruled that they are hurting the common man on the street, among other reservations.
In a statement that followed the virtual meeting, MDC-T&#8217;s spokesperson, Witness Dube in a statement on Thursday said:
<blockquote>The party reiterated its position that the continued international isolation was hurting the common man and woman. It, therefore, calls for the total and equal re-engagement of Zimbabwe with the international community.
The party reiterated that it stands for the unity of all progressive forces to fight for the betterment of the lives of the Zimbabwean people.</blockquote>
The issue of sanctions has divided the Southern African country to the extent everyone who is against the imposition of sanctions on the country is branded ZANU PF while those who support the imposition are considered enemies of the state.
Zimbabwe was isolated at the turn of the millennium when the Robert Mugabe-led administration embarked on a chaotic land reform programme during which many white farmers lost their land.
ZANU PF claims the sanctions were imposed because of the land reform programme and not the violation of human rights as Western powers claim.
<a href="http://www.zimfa.gov.zw/index.php/component/k2/item/49-impact-on-zimbabwe-and-the-region-of-the-unilateral-sanctions-imposed-by-the-united-states-of-america-and-the-european-union'" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Zimbabwe claims</a> the sanctions resulted in the collapse of the economy by:

<li>blocking access to credit lines,</li>
<li>branding Zimbabwe and its entire financial linkages with the rest of the world as high risk</li>
<li>making it extremely difficult for Zimbabwean companies and individuals to effect payments through the international payment platforms.</li>
<li>blocking diaspora remmittances &#8211; some money transfer companies cannot transact with some Zimbabwean financial entities through money transfers.</li>
</ul>

On the other hand, Western powers claim the Zimbabwean economy collapsed as a result of maladministration by the ruling ZANU PF.
Their remarks are consistent with Transparency International ratings which have consistently ranked Zimbabwe among the most corrupt countries in the world.
Some observers, however, say both sanctions and corruption are hurting the country hence the need to address the country&#8217;s issues holistically.

MDC-T: International Isolation Hurting The Common Man

United Kingdom&#8217;s ambassador to Zimbabwe, Melanie Robinson has said Zimbabwe&#8217;s economy is being held back by maladministration and not sanctions.
She made the remarks on Twitter after the United Kingdom had, for the first time since leaving the European Union, imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe&#8217;s four military chiefs. Ms Robinson posted:
<blockquote> It’s not sanctions holding Zimbabwe’s economy back. Corruption and illicit financial flows rob Zimbabweans of their own resources. The lack of political and economic reforms undermines the chance of debt relief &amp; international investment needed to rebuild Zimbabwe’s economy.</blockquote>
Zimbabwe was one of the fastest-growing economies on the aftermath of independence in the 80s but dramatically turned South in the 90s and worsened at the turn of the millennium over a number of issues.
While some attribute the decline to poor government policies, corruption and other issues, the Zimbabwean government has often argued that sanctions imposed by the former colonial master and her allies triggered the economic decline.
The government argues that the removal of sanctions will unlock revenue sources which in turn will result in economic growth.
The UK argues, however, that the sanctions are a way of compelling Zimbabwe into implementing much-needed reforms which include political, media, electoral and others.
The UK adds the implementation of reforms will result in Zimbabwe&#8217;s economy growing.

Sanctions Not Holding Zimbabwe’s Economy Back - UK

Zimbabwean Diplomat, Raisedon Zenenga, has been appointed Assistant Secretary-General and Mission Coordinator of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya by the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.
Zenenga who has until this appointment been the UN Deputy Special Representative for Somalia is expected, through the new role, to champion inclusive political dialogue among rivals in unstable Lybia. The NewsHawks report:

Zimbabwean Diplomat Zenenga Appointed UN Support Mission In Libya's Asst SG And Mission Coordinator

The Zimbabwean government has said the United States’ president-elect, Joe Biden must normalise relations with the Southern African country as a lot has changed to warrant re-engagement.
Zanu PF’s acting Secretary for Information, Patrick Chinamasa announced that the government had tasked
Foreign Affairs minister Sibusiso Moyo to approach the former VP in the Barak Obama administration in a fresh bid to mend the frosty relations between Harare and Washington.
<blockquote>Speaking to reporters in the capital last week, Chinamasa said there was no reason for Biden to keep sanctions on Zimbabwe. He said::
The coming in of Biden may not change much for us. However, we believe that a lot of water has gone under
the bridge and there is no reason anymore for our relations to continue being frosty.
We have tasked Moyo to engage the Americans for improved relations because there have been a lot of changes on the ground, which do not warrant the continuation of the strained relationship.</blockquote>
Chinamasa indicated that the ruling party was aware that Biden was among the three US Senators who sponsored the Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Reform Act (Zidera) which cut Zimbabwe from accessing international
loans and capital for development.
He claimed that Biden and his colleagues, back then, thought that the enactment of ZIDERA “would collapse
our economy immediately, but they failed.”
Chinamasa added that a lot had changed on the ground, therefore, “Biden should see that we must work together and repeal Zidera.”
Zimbabwe-US relations turned South at the turn of the millennium over alleged gross violation of human rights during the fast track land reform programme that saw white farmers losing their land.
Zimbabwe claims to have implemented multi-dimensional reforms which seek to enhance democracy and good governance in the country, a development authorities view as one of the reasons why the international community must engage and or re-engage with the former British colony.

USA Worried By Irregularities During Tanzania Elections

The United Kingdom (UK) has expressed concern over the indefinite suspension of by-elections in Zimbabwe by the minister of Health and Child Care, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga.
Posting on Twitter in response to a<a href="http://kubatana.net/2020/10/04/statement-on-the-indefinite-suspension-of-by-elections-in-zimbabwe/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> report by the Zimbabwe Election Support Network</a> (ZESN) which also condemned the suspensions, the UK in Zimbabwe said:

Vice President Chiwenga amended Statutory Instrument 225A of 2020 which now notes that “the holding of any by-election to fill a casual vacancy in Parliament or in a local authority is, for the duration of the period of the declaration of COVID-19 as a formidable epidemic disease, suspended, and if such vacancy occurred while such declaration is in force, no part of the period from the date of such vacancy to the date of the end of the declaration shall be counted for the purposes of section 158(3) of the Constitution.”
The suspension was also confirmed by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission which also cited the coronavirus.
Ironically, political parties have in recent weeks successfully held internal primary elections in preparation for the by-election.
Some political analysts view the move as a way to prevent the opposition MDC Alliance from replacing its members who were reCalled by the interim MDC-T leadership.

UK Concerned At Indefinite Suspension Of By-Elections

The United States of America has asked Zimbabwe neighbouring Mozambique address an Islamist insurgency that is destabilising Cabo Delgado, a region rich in natural gas.
Anonymous sources privy to the development told Bloomberg that the request came in a phone call between U.S. Assistant Secretary for African Affairs Tibor Nagy and Zimbabwe Foreign Minister Sibusiso Moyo last week.
Minister Moyo is said to have responded asking the U.S. to first drop targeted sanctions against Zimbabwean officials.
The former army boss told Nagy that President Emmerson Mnangagwa shares the U.S.’s concerns about the militants and that the two nations share strategic interests elsewhere, but sanctions remain an obstacle. A department spokesperson said:
<blockquote>The assistant secretary and the Zimbabwean foreign minister discussed how implementing promised economic and political reforms will restore Zimbabwe’s international reputation, rebuild its economy, and give voice to all Zimbabweans. They did not discuss alleviating sanctions in response to counter-terror assistance.</blockquote>
The Herald, a state-run publication quoted Moyo as telling Nagy that, “<a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/sb-moyo-us-assistant-secretary-hold-fruitful-talks/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">this is the time for the U.S. and Zimbabwe to start looking at the bigger strategic issues”</a> so that the two countries can normalize relations.
The U.S. recently expressed commitment to investing nearly $60 billion in natural gas facilities which are planned by companies including Total SE and Exxon Mobil Corp.
Meanwhile, the Mozambican port of Beira is key for landlocked Zimbabwe’s imports.

USA Asks Zimbabwe To Fight Mozambique Islamic Insurgency

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has appointed five new ambassadors replacing those who have been recalled or retired.
The list of the new diplomats consists of the former Prosecutor-General Johannes Tomana, who has been deployed to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Meanwhile, former Zimbabwe’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) Ambassador Taonga Mushayavanhu has been re-deployed to Ethiopia.
Zimbabwe&#8217;s former to the United States Ammon Mutembwa has been deployed as the country’s ambassador to Belgium.
The former police spokesperson Mrs Charity Angeline Charamba is the country’s new ambassador to neighbouring Zambia.
Lastly, the former Special-Advisor in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Stuart Harold Comberbach is now the Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.

President Mnangagwa Appoints New Ambassadors

The president of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa told the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) that economic sanctions against Zimbabwe need to be removed.
Speaking during the ongoing 75th UNGA session that is being is being held virtually, Ramaphosa emphasised the need for &#8220;collective commitment to multilateralism&#8221; in fighting the coronavirus pandemic.
He also called upon the international community to provide a comprehensive stimulus package for African countries. Ramaphosa said:
<blockquote>This will enable African countries to not only mitigate the health impacts of Covid-19 but to aid us in the immense task of rebuilding our shattered economies.
To ensure that no country is left behind, we reiterate our position as the African Union that economic sanctions against Zimbabwe and Sudan should be lifted to allow their governments to respond adequately to the pandemic.</blockquote>
Western countries particularly the United Kingdom, the United States and their allies, imposed sanctions on the Southern African country following a controversial fast track land reform programme that was marred by human rights violations.
While the Western powers claim that the sanctions are targeted, the Zimbabwean government and other analysts say the sanctions have an unintended effect on the general populace.
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) in 2019 set aside 25 October as the anti-sanctions day in solidarity with Zimbabwe saying the demise of the Zimbabwean economy affects all economies in the region.

Ramaphosa Takes Zimbabwe's Anti-Sanctions Agenda To UN

Since the ZANU PF Government embarked on the Land Reform and Redistribution Programme in 2000. Zimbabwe has been wilting under the yoke of USAsanctiorn whose main objective has been, to quote former US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Mr Chester Crocker, to make the economy of Zimbabwe scream and to separate ZANU PF from the people to achieve an illegal regime change.&#8221; As such, these sanctions have targeted pillars of our political economy with a view to reversing the land redistribution program as the CIA succeeded in doing the same in Guatemala from 1951 when they toppled the legitimately elected President Juan Jacobo Arbenz Guzman who had embarked on a Land Reform exercise. In Zimbabwe, these machinations will never succeed. Outsiders underestimate the grit and resilience of the Zimbabwean people. The 31 July antics were an attempt by USA sponsored forces to do a Guatemala on Zimbabwe. Such attempts will fail.
ZANU PF and the world at large is at a loss to understand the geopolitical reasons motivating the Sole Global Super Power which the USA is; descending on a small country like Zimbabwe with a sledgehammer on the basis of falsehoods perpetrated by individuals and the 4000 NGOs or so it has sponsored to peddle lies and fake news against the ZANU PF Government and its National Leadership. For the record, none of these 4000 NGOs are in the business of sinking borehole &amp; building clinics, hospitals or schools to meet the basic necessities of our people but peddling the regime change agenda in the majority of them. ZANU PF is indeed perplexed that one of the basis for imposing the OFAC sanctions on the entities is the DEMA Diesel Power Project which was undertaken and intended by government to address in the shortest possible time, intermittent power shortages wreaking havoc in our economy and thereby disrupting production across all sectors in the economy. The world needs to be told that the real concern of the USA concerning the DENI A Diesel Power Project is not about any alleged corruption but the failure to win the contract by a USA backed company.APR Energy.
On the issue of Command Agriculture again, the USA has conveniently chosen to act on the basis of falsehoods such as the allegations that Mr Tagwirei and SAKUNDA Holdings defrauded Government and ted and then funded by government to ensure the success of the land reform programme. The Scheme was successful and boosted agricultural output. The scheme was one of the many schemes introduced by the ZANU PF Government to assist farmers and the schemes included the Presidential Inputs Scheme targeting peasant and small scale farmers in semi-arid areas of the country as well as the Farm Mechanisation Support Scheme targeting both small scale and large scale farmers recently beneficiaries of the Land Redistribution Programme. When it operated, 78 000 medium to large scale farmers benefited under the Command Agriculture Scheme. From year to year, more than 1.8 million households continue to benefit from the Presidential Inputs Support Scheme annually and 350 000 households from the Presidential Cotton Inputs Support Scheme.
Allegations forming the basis of the sanctions decision by the USA have been deliberated upon by the Public Accounts Committee of Zimbabwe&#8217;s Parliament, chaired by Mr Tendai Biti, whom it will be recalled, along with MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa are perennial honoured guests of the Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the USA Senate, Senator Jeff Flake. Their missions in visiting Washington are always to plead for the extension, continuation of and intensification of USA sanctions against themselves and the Zimbabwean people. 
During the Public Accounts Committee Hearing chaired by Mr Biti, Sakunda Holding placed before the committee, all documentation pertaining to all transactions on Command Agriculture and successfully demonstrated that the allegations of corruption were false, fake, fabricated and malicious including allegations that they had received USS3 billion from government. If Mr Biti was man enough, he would have reported that to senator Flake, having observed that Mr Biti feels obligated to be accountable to the USA.
It is in this light that ZANU PF calls upon the USA government to respect Zimbabwe as an independent, sovereign country and in particular, its Parliament and Parliamentary processes. In this regard, ZANU PF calls upon the 4000 or so regime change NGOs sponsored by the USA and its Allies in Zimbabwe to come forward with evidence of impropriate concerning Command Agriculture and bring this to the attention of our law enforcement agents and the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) for their attention and investigation.
Until evidence to the contrary is established, ZANU PF wishes to place it on record that it considers Mr Tagwirei and Sakunda Holdings a respected player and stakeholder in the economy of Zimbabwe just as we are sure General Electric is considered a respected economic player in the USA and globally. Under our policy of indigenization and economic empowerment of previously disadvantaged under colonialism, ZANU PF&#8217;s expectations are that the country will be able to nurture many more Tagwireis and fellow indigenous entrepreneurs to be successful world-class businesses that will make impactful contribution to the reconstruction of our economy and the attainment of President ED Mnangagwa&#8217;s 2030 vision to make Zimbabwe an Upper Middle-Income country.
ZANU PF urges its government to continue on the path of Reforms, Engagement and Re-Engagement but the policy of engagement and re-engagement should never be misread as a policy of capitulation and appeasement. President Mnangagwa&#8217;s Engagement and Re-engagement is to build bridges between nations. Similarly, any reforms carried out by the ZANU PF Government must be understood that they are primarily to meet and serve the interests of our people and not to be misconstrued as a conditionality for engaging and reengaging any country.
ZANU PF reiterates its unshakable position that Zimbabwe is an independent sovereign state and is not accountable to the USA or any other country. Our policy is to defend the sovereignty, freedom and independence of our people from any external threat or attack. ZANU PF remains resolute and unshaken in discharging the mandate given to it by the blood of our people.
To Fellow Zimbabweans, ZANU PF says to you, that the USA OFAC Sanctions imposed on innocent Zimbabwean entities as has been the case since 2000 should serve as a timely warning that we are our own liberators. We should not look to outsiders for our development. Let us learn to harness and utilise sour domestic resources and capital in order to drive our economy forward, remembering always that the path to development is not an easy one. Let&#8217;s rally in unity behind our President, Cde ED Mnangagwa in transforming our economy towards the realisation of the President&#8217;s 2030 Vision to make this country an Upper Middle-income Economy.
But we will succeed in our endeavours if as enjoined by USA President Trump for his country, we put Zimbabwe First.

The European Union in Zimbabwe and the United Kingdom in Zimbabwe have expressed concern over the denial of bail to Zimbabwean journalist Hopewell Chin&#8217;ono.
The award-winning journalist who was arrested on 20 July was again denied bail this Friday. Posting on Twitter, EU in Zimbabwe said:

The UK in Zimbabwe also posted on Twitter urging the Zimbabwean government to uphold human rights. The tweet reads:

Chin&#8217;ono was arrested for inciting public violence after he rallied members of the public to participate in anti-government protests that were slated for the 31st of July.
He has since then applied for bail on numerous occasions with courts turning the applications down.
Some argue that Chin&#8217;ono is being victimised for exposing grand corruption by some government officials and departments.
Calls for his release have intensified lately following his continued detention.
