The Zimbabwean Embassy in Senegal has been given 20 hectares of arable land for the production of white maize in the west African country.
Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Senegal, James Maridadi said he decided to experiment on the production of white maize after realising that the west African country focused on growing yellow maize for stock feed.
He said he was initially working on a five-hectare piece of land in Dakar, Senegal, which has largely been successful. Said Maridadi:

What happened is that when I initially came here, I realised that they don’t do white maize in this region, they do yellow maize, which is mostly for stock feed and they import about US$160 million worth of white maize to subsidize their consumption.
I then approached the Ministry of Agriculture in Senegal, where I got five hectares of land to do an experiment on white maize production.
I got seed from Zimbabwe, bought fertilizer here in Senegal, and did the five hectares and the results were amazing.
I did a field day where I invited about 200 commercial farmers and 500 subsistence farmers to come and it was a huge day because the government of Senegal also came to participate and 11 other ambassadors from other nations in the African continent.
What has happened now is that the government of Senegal has allocated more land, about 20 hectares of land, so this year I am going full force in this experiment of ours. I will use the SC719 variety being done by SeedCo.

Maridadi, a former ZBC presenter and MDC MP, said African countries should wean themselves off relying on Europe to feed their people. He said:

In Africa, I believe we have to eat what we produce and produce what we eat therefore we cannot have a situation where African countries import food from Europe, look how many countries have been affected by their inability now to import from Ukraine.
What we want is that when we introduce the white maize seed variety from Zimbabwe which works here, SeedCo, for example, can then sell intellectual rights to Senegal and Senegal can start manufacturing those seeds under license from Zimbabwe thereby earning foreign currency for the country, that is what we call economic diplomacy.

Zimbabwe Embassy Gets Land In Senegal To Grow White Maize

Some of Zimbabwe’s embassies around the world are so broke to the extent that they cannot afford flags to display outside, <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/2022/11/some-zimbabwe-embassies-so-broke-they-cant-afford-a-flag-diplomats/">ZimLive.com</a> reported citing diplomats.
Responding to Information minister Monica Mutsvangwa’s comments that ambassadors should “market brand Zimbabwe,” diplomats listed a series of challenges, all caused by lack of funding. diplomats said on Thursday.
The ambassadors are meeting in Bulawayo for a retreat convened by the foreign affairs ministry.
Tadeous Chifamba, Zimbabwe’s ambassador to the United States, said many of Zimbabwe’s embassy buildings were in a state of disrepair. Chifamba said Thursday at the retreat being held at Rainbow Hotel:

Government support towards the refurbishment of our embassies is needed.
The image of our residences is important as they are the first port of call when we meet our clients as well as host officials. It’s important to project a good image.
</blockquote>
The country’s ambassador to Sweden, Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga, said the best-laid plans would not work without financial backing. She said:

Where we are we are finding that other countries are moving faster than we are in selling themselves and its largely because they put money into those processes.
</blockquote>
Pointing to the FIFA World Cup which gets underway this month, she wondered if Zimbabwe was doing anything to market itself at the global showcase.
Mutsvangwa had urged the diplomats to market “brand Zimbabwe” to pull more foreign investment and lure tourists.
The minister said the diplomats “have the responsibility of defending and promoting all the aspects of our country – politics, defence, security, culture, investments and trade relations.” 
She added that diplomats are the country’s image as Zimbabwe’s friends, political partners, foes, and all those interested in the country engage diplomats first. Mutsvangwa added:

Foreign Affairs Minister Sibusiso Busi Moyo on Wednesday said that Zimbabwe’s re-engagement exercise with Western countries will be a process and not an event.
Moyo said this while addressing ambassador-designates and foreign service officials at a diplomatic orientation course in Harare.
Notable ambassador-designates present were former MDC MP for Mabvuku/Tafara James Maridadi and a former army commander Douglas Nyikayaramba. Said Moyo:
<blockquote>It is clear, therefore, that re-engagement will be more of a process than an event; That it will be anchored in confidence-building measures, sending the right signals with regard to reform and with regard to our commitment to the conduct of ‘decent politics’; and the pursuit of economic policies that will restore and sustain macro-economic stability and that will provide guarantees on the government’s intention to meet its international obligations.
These include ending Zimbabwe’s estrangement from the Western world and reopening lines of communication at the political level, to achieve the removal of sanctions and all other punitive measures imposed on Zimbabwe in order to unleash the country’s full economic potential, to restore confidence in our national economic policies and to project Zimbabwe as a nation that values democracy, respects human rights and the rule of law, upholds its international obligations, property rights and generally abides by all tenets of good governance.</blockquote>

How Zimbabweans Reacted To Maridadi Appointment

An independent MP, Temba Mliswa said that is is a lie that the Zimbabwe military removed former President Robert Mugabe from power.
Mliswa said that the army failed to push Mugabe out of office and if it were not the citizens who demonstrated, and parliament which began the impeachment process, Mugabe would have refused to go.
Mliswa said this during an all-stakeholders post-election workshop hosted by the Zimbabwe Elections Support Network (Zesn) in Bulawayo last week. Said Mliswa
<blockquote>I want to address the issue that the army was part of the process of ensuring that there was a second republic so were all of us.
… Then there was the people’s march, the people’s revolutions, led by the war veterans and everybody involved. It was the first time to see Members of Parliament coming together. … the issue of impeachment was first started by James Maridadi (MDC-T) and I seconded it when the army failed to remove the former President, and I say this for the first time; they failed. He [Mugabe] refused to go, that was when there was an impeachment process.
To lie every day yet there’s evidence when the army wanted to remove Mugabe, did he go? Let’s be honest. That is why I get too emotional at Parliament, it’s because of lies.</blockquote>
Mugabe was put under house arrest by the military at his Blue Roof mansion in Borrowdale for a couple of days.
He adamantly refused to step aside even when thousands of Zimbabweans poured into the streets, calling for his resignation.
It was only when impeachment proceedings started in Parliament, and  Mugabe realised that he had lost the support of the bulk of ZANU PF MPs that he resigned.

Army Failed To Removed Mugabe, It Was Helped By Citizens - Mliswa

In a statement, the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) said its Chief Executive Officer Mr Patrick Mavhura does not have a twitter handle @MavhuraPatrick.
The state broadcaster also dismissed the appointment of opposition politician James Maridadi as its new head of radio services saying that it does not issue staff appointments via social media. The statements reads:
<blockquote>As a corporation that values the ethics that govern the media and broadcasting sector, we condemn in the strongest sense such behaviour and we will be taking the necessary steps to establish the motive behind such actions.</blockquote>
ZBC also apologised for any inconveniences that may have been caused to the target persons in these notices and to its stakeholders.

ZBC Dismisses James Maridadi's Appointment As Head Of Radio Services, Says CEO Is Not On Twitter

James Maridadi the MDC-T MP for Mabvuku/Tafara has accused the ruling Zanu-PF party of not respecting diversity and difference of political views. Maridadi alleged that Zanu-PF was criminalising Brigadier General (retired) Ambrose Mutinhiri’s National Patriotic Front (NPF), which was endorsed by former president Robert Mugabe.
Said Maridadi in Parliament,
<blockquote>Zanu PF is declaring war on Mutinhiri for forming a new political party and have been bashing Mutinhiri in the State-controlled media as if he has committed a crime.
They have gone to the extent of saying that he is beholden to former President Robert Mugabe as if it is a crime. I would have preferred for Mutinhiri to join the main opposition MDC-T, but it is his constitutional right to join any political party of his choice</blockquote>

Maridadi Accuses Zanu-PF Of Intolerance Of Divergent Views For "Criminalising" Mutinhiri's NPF

In an interview with NewsDay, Mabvuku Tafara legislator James Maridadi criticised Finance Minister Patrick Chinamasa for defending his Zanu-PF counterparts Home Affairs Minister Obert Mpofu and Information Communication Technology Minister Supa Mandiwanzira when they were implicated for alleged corruption in the National Assembly.
Below is the excerpt of the interview Maridadi (JM) had with NewsDay senior Parliamentary reporter Veneranda Langa (ND):
<blockquote>ND: You implicated Mpofu and Mandiwanzira in corruption cases, but Chinamasa came to their defence berating you in Parliament, that you must not accuse people of corruption when you do not have evidence. How did you feel about it?
JM: I feel that defending Mpofu and Mandiwanzira is not Chinamasa’s responsibility. If he wants to defend and represent them then he must go to the Advocates’ Chambers and do so, but he must not defend them in Parliament. He is a minister of Finance, and being a good lawyer that he is, he must defend them as an advocate, but not in Parliament.
ND: So what are you suggesting that Parliament must do to deal with bigwigs implicated in corruption?
JM: Parliament must be able to set up a commission of enquiry and investigate the issues because when we are debating as MPs and implicate a minister, we are not saying he is guilty of corruption. It is an allegation, but it must be presented before the courts who will decide if that person is guilty.
Parliament must set up a special committee to investigate and make a presentation during Parliament plenary. The police must also come in and investigate. I never said, for example, that the ICT minister is guilty, but I am saying that allegations laid on him by a senior former chief executive officer of NetOne (Reward Kangai) mean that these are serious allegations that need to be investigated and government must then make an effort to investigate. Ministers are tasked to run government and it is not a petty job. People are looking up to them and they need to work without specks of corruption on their eyes. They have a moral obligation to submit themselves to due process and clear their names.</blockquote>

Maridadi Criticises Chinamasa For Defending Mpofu And Mandiwanzira

Finance and Economic Development Minister Patrick Chinamasa defended Home Affairs Minister Obert Mpofu after Mabvuku-Tafara Member of Parliament James Maridadi (MDC-T) and Norton MP Mr Temba Mliswa (Independent) called for a probe into Mpofu’s acquisition of several assets, including mines, which they argued he could have bought them during his tenure as Minister of Mines and Mining Development.
Chinamasa dismissed the allegations which he said lacked merit since Mpofu accumulated much of his wealth before joining Government. Said Chinamasa:
<blockquote>I first met Honourable Mpofu around 1984 when I was going to Gaborone, Botswana, with my family for a visit. We met at Plumtree and he was already a businessman. Later on, when I was an Attorney-General, I think I wanted to speak to him and he took me to his building. He had already bought it in 1998 – a very expensive building in Bulawayo. I am just telling you of facts that I know. I cannot defend him if there is anything or any monkey business. You know where the problem is Honourable Maridadi? We are not accustomed to see a rich African. We are very much comfortable to see a rich white person, but when we see a rich black man, we conclude that he is a thief. This is not a fair comment. </blockquote>
Minister Chinamasa said there was nothing wrong with Mpofu owning a mine. Said Chinamasa:
<blockquote>I know some honourable members here who own mines. So, if one day you are appointed a Minister and you own a mine, I do not see any problem. Let us get used to people owning assets — it is not evil. So, we do not want people to be disqualified because they own assets. Let us take, for example, Tillerson. He was in the oil business, was he not? Tillerson, the State Secretary in the United States of America’s government, he is himself probably a billionaire or something. In fact, in that Cabinet there are billionaires, they have got assets, but they declare the assets and pursue the national interest.</blockquote>

Chinamasa Defends Obert Mpofu's Wealth After MPs Call For Probe

James Maridadi the MDC-T MP for Mabvuku/Tafara has criticised the administration of the Presidential Scholarship Programme saying that it was only benefiting the children of connected people. He lamented the fact that talent kids, who were not benefiting were losing out to less talented children whose parents are connected politically. Speaking at a Katswe Sisterhood organized event, Maridadi said:
<blockquote>The Presidential scholarship is preferring children of permanent secretaries of government ministries and those of the ministries’ department directors leaving out ours in Mabvuku who were orphaned by AIDS and who have passed.
We have such children with 11 points at Advanced Level who could not be absorbed by the University of Zimbabwe to do medicine but permanent secretaries’ who have as low as 4 points at are going to South Africa to do medicine simply because their parents know Chris Mushowe who administers the Presidential scholarship scheme.</blockquote>

Presidential scholarship only benefiting children of connected people at the expense of orphans and deserving children : Maridadi

Mabvuku-Tafara legislator James Maridadi of the opposition MDC-T has said that no one should be arrested for saying that President Robert Mugabe is old, and should be resting. Maridadi added that Mugabe had outlived his usefulness.
Addressing journalists at the belated World Press Freedom Day commemorations on Saturday Maridadi said:
<blockquote>At that age, and it is not a slip of the tongue that people at that age are either at a nursing home or they are dead. So, at 93 or 94 you are in a nursing home, or you are in hospital or you are in a cemetery and we cannot blame anyone for being at a cemetery because that is truly where they belong</blockquote>

Mugabe should either be dead or at a nursing home, and noone should be arrested for saying so: Maridadi

Tafara-Mabvuku legislator James Maridadi has accused Local Government Minister Saviour Kasukuwere of hypocrisy for suspending Chitungwiza town councillors despite the fact that all he has are allegations.  Maridadi said that Kasukuwere was acting as the “judge, the jury and the executioner.” He also reminded Kasukuwere that he is facing several allegations himself, yet he has not been suspended. Kasukuwere is facing allegations of engaging in illegal land deals in Pomona as well as plotting to topple President Mugabe.
Said Maridadi in Parliament:
<blockquote>There are certain allegations that you took land in Pomona and you said $5 million should be paid to (Philip) Chiyangwa so that you would sort out his issue on land but you were not suspended as a Minister.
You remained as Minister because the President knows the law that you cannot be chased away because of allegations but you are suspending people for selling a few stands whilst you are alleged to have stolen the whole of Pomona.</blockquote>
Kasukuwere responded by dismissing Maridadi as radio disc jockey who still thought he was addressing kids. Said Kasukuwere:
<blockquote>I know your background my dear brother; you used to play with kids on radio station.
I am sure you think you are still playing with kids. It is a different circumstance now.</blockquote>

Kasukuwere accused of hypocrisy for suspending councillors on mere allegations despite facing several allegations himself

Zimbabwe People First spokesperson <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Jealousy_Mawarire">Jealousy Mawarire</a> has accused Zanu PF Minister of  Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Prisca_Mupfumira">Prisca Mupfumira</a> of smuggling blankets into the country, to avoid paying high costs of duty. Mawarire claimed that Mupfumira was working in collaboration with former Minister <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Webster_Shamu">Webster Shamu</a> to help the Chinese to beat the country’s “punitive import duty.”  Mawarire also decried the hypocrisy exhibited by Mupfumira in supporting Statutory Instrument 64 of 2016, and then working to break it.
Speaking on his facebook page, Mawarire said:
<blockquote>Zanu-PF Minister, Prisca Chimukupete Mupfumira, a relative of President Robert Mugabe, is involved in the smuggling of blankets into the country that Hon James Maridadi told parliament about.
While we are told SI 64 is meant to protect local industries by banning importation of locally available goods, Zanu-PF cabinet ministers, who are involved in the crafting of such statutory instruments, are the biggest breakers of the same laws working with unscrupulous Chinese business persons. Mupfumira, working in cahoots with Webster Shamu has been ‘assisting’ these foreign nationals to run away from the country’s punitive import duty regime.</blockquote>
The two are reportedly helping the Chinese company Qingshang ti smuggle the blankets in the country.  Dusting debate in the National Assembly, James Maridadi described the “Qingshang” blankets as substandard and  accused the country of making false declarations at the border.
Said Maridadi:
<blockquote>The way this Qingshan product is done is so sub-standard.  You must wash it once for you to see how badly done it is.  The reason I then went back to buy this blanket is because I had bought a blanket earlier on, when it was washed once, it disintegrated.
…Mr. Speaker, I then followed up this company and I discovered that when they bring in these readymade blankets, they declare at Forbes Border post, as fleece fabric which is going to be value added in this country. When a forty foot container was opened, it had readymade blankets; packed in that bag and ready for sale.  That container, because they declare fabric at 0.40 cents per metre, the forty foot container was paid for US$4 700 but the actual value of that container is US$95 000.  I have all that evidence.
Initially, when they were importing these blankets, they used what is called JJ Transport.  JJ Transport which has trackers.  ZIMRA can actually track from the time that it leaves Forbes Border post to the time that it gets to Harare.  When I went to do my investigation, I was wearing casual clothes, a cap and some dark glasses so that I could not be identified. When they discovered that somebody was investigating, they then changed the transport company and they are now using a Mozambique transport company which does not have tracker and so you cannot track it.</blockquote>

Prisca Mupfumira and Webster Shamu accused of assisting Chinese to smuggle blankets to avoid paying duty

The member of the House of Assembly for Umzingwane, <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Priscilla_Misihairambi_Mushonga">Priscilla Misihairabwi</a> has claimed that President Mugabe does see the reality of what is happening in Zimbabwe because he is under the control of other people who tell him to do and what not to do.
Speaking in the House of Assembly, Misihairambwi said that Mugabe had been “captured” meaning that he was under the control of other people who directed his actions. However, she did not provide any names of who may have “captured” the president.
Said Misihairambwi,
<blockquote>The President has been taken into capture, he doesn’t see reality. 
we have people who have taken the President to a corner and tell him what to do
In SA they are talking of State Capture here we have President Capture</blockquote>
Misahairambwi also said that she was going to start a petition to have the president appear in the National Assembly to answer questions because the people who are controlling him are also controlling access to him. She added
<blockquote>If we request the President to come to Party we have people who oppose it. 
I am going to write a petition calling the President to come and answer questions
I want you all MPs to support my petition</blockquote>
She was supported by James Maridadi who said that he wanted the Presdient in the House because the oppistion MPs were the only ones who could be trusted to tell him the truth, unlike the Zanu Pf MPs.
<blockquote>We want President to come and hear us , so he get the truth 
The president can only get the true picture from opposition MPs because we have nothing to lose</blockquote>
Maridadi also seemed to suggest that the President was not responsible for the mess that is in the country. Instead, he placed the blame on government minister who did not carry out their duties.  Said Maridadi
 
<blockquote>If the President was to come here and listen to the truth he will be shocked
The people around the President don’t tell him the truth, so he gets the blame</blockquote>

Mugabe does not see reality because he is no longer in control: Priscilla Misihairambwi

<a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Parliament_of_Zimbabwe">Members of Parliament</a>, mostly from the <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Movement_for_Democratic_Change_-_Tsvangirayi_(MDC-T)">MDC-T</a>, took Finance Minister <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Patrick_Chinamasa">Patrick Chinamasa</a> to task over public hearings concerning the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Ammendment Bill public hearings and wanted to know why the Government introduced bond notes at a time when parliament’s portfolio committee on Budget and Finance was seeking people’s views on the bill.
Mutare Central MP Innocent Gonese (MDC-T) said the views of the people would be made redundant as it was already a Government had already accomplished what the bill will legalise if passed into law. Mabvuku-Tafara MP <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/James_Maridadi">James Maridadi</a> (MDC-T) said the consultations being made countrywide by the committee were a “dead rubber” since the bond notes were already in circulation. Gutu Central MP, Lovemore Matuke (Zanu-PF) said his assessment had shown that the bond notes had not done enough to end queues.
In response Chinamasa said that the bill was introduced as a cautionary measure as there was already existing legislation to support the decision to bring on board the surrogate currency. Responding to the issue on continued bank queues, Chinamasa said that the central bank had issued $12 million into the market and would consider increasing it in a manner that was not inflationary.
