PICTURE: Tears As Widow Remembers Her Husband Lost To January 2019 Crackdown

<p>MDC-Alliance legislator Joana Mamombe was arrested on Saturday and charged with treason. The charges are emanating from a press conference she held with some MDC-Alliance councillors on 14 January in 2019, the day the January violent protests began.</p>

<p>During the press conferences, she read a statement with a list of demands:</p>

<p>MDC Alliance Member of Parliament Joana Mamombe, who was arrested early Saturday 2 March 2019, has been charged with treason.</p>
<p>MDC-Alliance member  &amp; MP, Charlton Hwende updated followers on Twitter:</p>
<blockquote><p>Hon Joana Mamombe 25yr old is at Harare Central Law and Order Police and she is being charged with attempting to overthrow and subvert a Constitutionally elected government (Treason) for addressing a Press Conference on 14th of January 2019 @ Civic center Malbrough.</p></blockquote>
<p>Mamombe was arrested earlier today in Nyanga while she was on parliamentary business. She had been on the police wanted list since 25 January. MDC Alliance had however said that none of their MPs were on the run.</p>
<p>Mamombe is one of the several MDC-Alliance MPs and activists charged with treason this year following the January protests which turned violent resulting in road blockades, the burning of vehicles and the looting of ships mostly in Bulawayo, Harare and Mutare.</p>

UPDATE: Joana Mamombe Charged With Treason

<p>The Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Ziyambi Ziyambi, released a statement today in which he attacked the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission’s Report (ZHRC) for being polarising and having “unsubstantiated accusations without caveats or evidence.”</p>
<p>Said the statement:</p>
<blockquote><p>Government has taken note of the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission report. The Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission is a constitutional commission put in place to strengthen our democracy. There is therefore an expectation that they would be impartial and speak without bias. Their report falls short of that standard as it is based not on thorough investigation and only covers the period after the first two most anarchical days of the<br/>
disturbances</p>
<p>Government expects our constitutional commissions not be polarising by making broad and unsubstantiated accusations without caveats or evidence.</p>
<p>In the interest of fairness and justice Government will engage with the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission in order to map the way forward for the benefit of the people of Zimbabwe.</p>
<p>In the same vein Government wishes to assure the public that all allegations of misconduct against any of our Security Services will be thoroughly investigated and the law will be allowed to take its course. Those with complaints should report them to the police and they will be treated impartially and with sensitivity.</p>
<p>It is also important to note that the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) has issued a statement appealing to all those who wish to complain against the Army to report their allegations to the Military Police on the following numbers:<br/>

<p>ZHRC released its report early this week. In the report it pointed several incidents where government, the military and the police were found wanting in terms of the respect of the human rights of Zimbabweans.</p>
