A 35-year-old man from Guruve, Mashonaland Central, who is a member of Johanne Marange apostolic sect, is on the run after he allegedly fatally assaulted his wife for refusing to keep her head bald.
The suspect, Daniel Mufambi, reportedly accused his wife Benedict Mutero (22) of failing to abide by the church doctrine of shaving the head bald.
ZRP provincial spokesperson Inspector Milton Mundembe told <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/man-kills-wife-for-refusing-to-shave-her-head/">The Herald</a> that Mutero died upon arrival at Guruve hospital.
Insp Mundembe said the incident happened on 28 October 2023, at around 9 AM.
He said on the fateful day, Mufambi and his wife, who was also a member of the same apostolic sect, had a misunderstanding.
Mufambi accused Mutero of disregarding church doctrine and ordered her to accompany him to a church service but she refused.
He started flogging her, slapping and punching her all over the body.
Mutero collapsed and fell unconscious and the husband dragged her into a kitchen hut.
Mufambi’s mother, Agnes Mufambi (59) who witnessed the violence from her home, 300 meters away, summoned her daughter Tabeth to intervene.
Tabeth refrained her brother from further assaulting Mutero. The brother of the accused, Obvious, secured transport from Matthew Kagwande (36) from Chingwaru Village.
They ferried Mutero to the hospital where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Police officers from Guruve attended the scene but Mufambi had already fled.
Mutero had bruises all over the body and a swollen head.

Johanne Marange Sect Member Kills Wife For Refusing To Shave Her Head

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said the World Health Organisation (WHO) has promised to avail funds to assist Zimbabwe to train more nurses and doctors to alleviate the brain drain in the medical sector.
Mnangagwa said this while addressing thousands of ZANU PF supporters, Johanne Marange apostolic sect members, and schoolchildren at the ground-breaking and fundraising ceremony of St Noah College in Marange on Wednesday. <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200008518/who-will-bail-us-out-ed">NewsDay</a> quoted Mnangagwa as saying:

Our Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga was attending the ministers of health meeting in Switzerland and the WHO said they are aware that we are losing our doctors and nurses. The WHO said they will give us funds to recruit more nurses and doctors.
Our children, doctors, nurses and accountants and other professionals are being taken by other countries because they are educated. They are being taken by London, Australia, Canada and America.
</blockquote>
8 363 medical professionals were granted work visas by the United Kingdom between 2019 and September 2022.
Since last year, more than 2 200 nurses and doctors have left the country, according to the Health Services Board.

WHO Promised To Fund Training Of Doctors And Nurses In Zimbabwe - Mnangagwa

President Emmerson Mnangagwa was on Wednesday, 08 March 2023, expected to address members of the Johanne Marange Apostolic Church in Marange.
The event is a Groundbreaking and Fundraising Ceremony for a proposed boarding facility at St Noah College.
ZANU PF Manicaland chairman Tawanda Mukodza confirmed Mnangagwa’s expected visit to Marange to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200008494/ed-heads-for-marange">NewsDay</a>. He said:

It is true that President Emmerson Mnangagwa will be in our province tomorrow (today) for a ground-breaking ceremony at St Noah College.
Our President supports the education system and indigenous churches in the country.
We are encouraging people from various corners of the country to come and witness this historic moment.
</blockquote>
Meanwhile, St Noah College opened its doors in January 2012. It comprises both a Primary and Secondary School on one campus.
The school was named after the late Noah Taguta who was the leader of the Johane Marange Apostolic Church in Zimbabwe.

Mnangagwa Set To Attend St Noah College Groundbreaking Ceremony

The late 14-year-old Delight Masomeke, who died on Tuesday in Buhera after labour complications, was in a polygamous marriage involving another girl of her age, it has emerged.
Delight, who will be laid to rest today at her family home in Chivhu, dropped out of school and got married before completing Grade Seven, according to <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/girl-14-dies-after-birth-related-complications/">NewsDay Weekender</a>.
 Her husband from the Johane Marange sect is currently on the run.  
Zimbabwean laws criminalise the marriage of girls below the age of 18.
Police would release a detailed statement on the matter, NewsDay reported citing national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi. He is quoted as saying:

We are yet to receive a full report from police in Manicaland,” Nyathi said. “Once we get the information we will release a detailed statement.
</blockquote>
An unnamed police source told the publication that investigations carried out so far revealed that Delight’s husband had three wives. The source said:
<blockquote>
Delight was the second wife and the third wife is 14 years old also. However, her husband’s whereabouts are still unknown. He resided in Chivhu together with his three wives.

Johanne Marange sect allows polygamous marriages but claims that it does not allow child marriages. 
In 2021 when <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Anna_Machaya">Anna Machaya</a>, another 14-year-old girl died during childbirth at a church shrine, <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/johanne-marange-apostolic-church-apologises-over-anna-machayas-death/">the church released a statement</a> saying it does not allow child marriages. Reads in part the statement earlier published by Pindula News:

But, we want to make it clear that our church abides and respect the laws of our government.
Our leader <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Noah_Taguta">High Priest Noah Taguta</a> (the late) and the followers of the church, we all respect the laws that govern Zimbabwe. We make it a point that in every preaching sermon, our priests always preach the word against child marriages. It is one of our church doctrines that is against the practise of child marriages.

Rights activists have raised a red flag on the increase in maternal deaths involving children and underage women from the sect.

New Details Emerge On 14-year-old Zimbabwean Mother Who Died After Labour Complications

The Johanne Marange Apostolic Church in Marange has apologised over the death of Anna Machaya, a 14-year-old married girl, who died on 15 July 2021 while giving birth at the church’s shrine in Bocha in the Marange area.
The alleged husband to Machaya – Evans Hatirarami Momberume – was arrested and has since appeared at Mutare Magistrate Court where he is facing rape and murder charges.
Magistrate Lucy Mungwari denied him bail and remanded him in custody to September 3.
In an interview with Zim Morning Post on Wedsday, The Johanne Marange Apostolic church spokesperson, Nyasha Marange, said the church regretted the incident describing it as ‘unfortunate.’ He said:

First of all, we are sorry of the incident and it was so unfortunate. But, we want to make it clear that our church abides and respect the laws of our government.
Our leader High Priest Noah Taguta and the followers of the church, we all respect the laws that govern Zimbabwe. We have high respect to our government and as a church, we also have our laws that clearly state that girls under the age of 18 are not married.

He said the case of Machaya was an ‘isolated case’ further claiming that “there are rogue elements within the church who might be practising child marriages and the church will deal with such cases accordingly.” 
Anna Machaya’s death attracted massive criticism from local and international human rights activists and organizations including the United Nations.
Marange added that Church members don’t go to the hospital to receive any medication as they have prophets who “use our holy water and prayers.”
He added that the church has now put measures aimed at mitigating cases of child marriages.

Johanne Marange Apostolic Church Apologises Over Anna Machaya's Death

A 47-year-old Johane Marange apostolic church member who was married at the age of 12 has opened up on her experiences in the religious sect. 
The anonymous woman whom <a href="https://thenewshawks.com/defiant-apostolic-men-prey-on-young-girls/">The NewsHawks</a> named Norest Kubaya, to protect her identity, said she became the 7th wife of a polygamous man. 
She speaks as the nation is still demanding justice for Memory Machaya, a 14-year-old married girl who died at the church’s shrine during childbirth.
Memory was forced to drop out of school while doing Form One to get married to Evans Momberume,  a much older man.
Norest Kubaya narrated:
<blockquote>
I was in Grade Five when I eloped for my marriage. I must admit that it’s actually me who wanted to get married. My father was against it. He feared for my well-being since I was still too young to be married. Being a child, I was lured into the marriage by the prospects of a better life. My father wept when he heard I was pregnant the following year.
</blockquote>
Her husband married 4 other wives after her and has 64 children from his 11 wives. 
Norest Kubaya added that there are trained midwives at the shrine who help expecting mothers. She said several young women have died while giving birth because of complications that needed operations and may lose a lot of blood. She added:

Burials are done secretly by few family members. The doctrine is that we must not reveal much to outsiders. I lost 10 of my children at different ages, the oldest being seven years. It was due to different illnesses, but I never went to hospital to get medication for them. We accepted that it was natural for them to die. Even some of the newly married still believe this.
</blockquote>
She said she regrets that she ended up in this polygamous affair when she was still too young to start a family. 
Norest Kubaya added the majority of these young girls are deceived by goodies, including biscuits, and zapnaks (snacks). 
She exonerated the church leader, Noah Taguta, whom she said has on several occasions spoken against child marriages. 
Norest Kubaya urged authorities to arrest men who were engaging in child marriages.

Johanne Marange Church Member Married At 12 Shares Her Story

Zimbabwean socialite, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Madam_Boss">Madam Boss</a> who is also known as Tyra Chikocho real name Tarisai Cleopatra Chikocho has sparked a storm on social media storm by her comments on the planned protests over the death of a 14-year-old married girl.
The comedienne made the remarks while responding to one of her followers who had invited her to join the protests which are being planned to get justice for Memory Machaya who died during childbirth at a Johanne Marange Church last month.
In response, Madam Boss said:

Mai Titi threatened citizen’s arrest saying that she refused to do nothing as doing nothing is the conducive condition for evil to succeed is observed by philosopher Edmund Burke.
The police say investigations are underway.

Death Of 14-year-old Married Girl: Madam Boss' Comments Spark Storm

Johane Marange Apostolic church has confirmed the death of a married 14-year-old Johanne Marange Apostolic Church girl Memory Machaya.
Reports suggest that Memory Machaya, who was from Kwekwe, was forced to drop out of school when she was in form 1 to get married to Evans Momberume.
She died during childbirth at the church’s shrine in Marange, but, the location of her grave is in dispute. Her family insists that she was buried at the shrine soon after death, but the church denies the allegations. 
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi has said police were conducting investigations that were expected to be complete before Friday.
 Momberume and everyone who may have facilitated that marriage will likely be arrested if it’s established that Memory was underage.
The church’s coordinator and spokesperson, Mr Nyasha Marange, told The Herald that the church would not stand in the way of law enforcement agents as they probe the case. He said:

It is true that Memory was married to Evans Momberume. The police should probe the case to its logical conclusion. She died after giving birth and her baby is with the Machayas in Kwekwe.
As the Johanne Marange Apostolic Church, we will not protect any of our congregants being investigated by law enforcement agents for any criminal offence, be it murder, rape or marrying a minor.
The police should carry out their duties without fear or favour. No one is above the law and if any of our congregants has a case to answer, let the due process take its course.
As a church, we have been preaching against marrying of minors. During our Saturday church meetings, elders take time to preach against child marriages. No one should be married before the age of 18.

Marange said he did not know where Memory was buried but vehemently denied that she was buried at the church shrine saying the tradition is that if one dies at the shrine, arrangements are made to ferry that person’s body to their place of origin. 
Machaya family spokesperson Ms Alice Mabika last week insisted that her niece was buried at the shrine.
