The Kenyan government has reinstated a small subsidy to stabilise retail fuel prices for the next 30 days after months of violent protests against the rising cost of living.
Ruto removed fuel and maize flour subsidies in September last year after taking office and increased taxes this year.
The subsidies had put in place by his predecessor Uhuru Kenyatta but Ruto said he preferred subsidising production rather than consumption.
The move was also aimed at cutting government spending as the government seeks to get a handle on debt repayments, reported <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/8/15/kenya-reinstates-fuel-subsidy-after-months-of-violent-protests">Al Jazeera</a>.
However, the subsidy cuts as well as recent tax hikes have increased living costs and contributed to violent anti-government protests in recent months.
On Monday, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announced that the maximum retail price of a litre of petrol would remain constant at 194.68 shillings ($1.35).
The Government will shoulder an increase of 7.33 shillings ($0.05) through a price stabilisation fund.
Fuel prices shot up when Ruto removed the subsidies and spiked again in July after the government doubled the fuel tax.

Kenyan President William Ruto Reinstates Fuel Subsidy After Violent Protests

The number of bodies exhumed in the Shakahola forest in Kenya has risen to 251 after 9 more bodies were found on Tuesday following the resumption of the exhumations.
Coast Regional Commissioner Rhoda Onyancha said that the number of rescues remains 95 and arrests 35, reported <a href="https://ntvkenya.co.ke/news/shakahola-horror-nine-more-bodies-exhumed-death-toll-at-251/">NTV</a>.
At least 93 bodies have undergone DNA tests.
Only 19 bodies have been identified by family members as 613 people were reported to be missing.
The Shakahola massacre is linked to <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Paul_Mackenzie_(Kenya_Cult_Pastor)">Pastor Paul Mackenzie</a>, a Kenyan religious leader who allegedly led what is now referred to as the Kenyan starvation cult.
Mackenzie allegedly convinced more than 200 followers to fast themselves to death, believing that they would have a chance to get to heaven before the end of the world.
He founded and leads the Good News International Church which later relocated to Malindi, a coastal town in Kenya near a forest called Shakahola in Kilifi county where he has a farm.
Mackenzie used the farm as the burial ground for his followers who starved themselves to death under his orders, hence the Shakahola Forest Massacre.

Kenya: Shakahola Massacre Death Toll Rises To 251

A Kenyan preacher who claims to be Jesus Christ and was arrested last week was released from police custody on Tuesday, 16 May, <a href="https://www.kenyans.co.ke/news/89342-yesu-wa-tongaren-released-no-charges-pressed-heres-why">reported Kenyans</a>.
Bungoma Principal Magistrate Tom Olando ordered the Police to release Yesu wa Tongaren, whose real name is Eliud Wekesa after the prosecution stated that findings by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) did not offer any grounds to implicate him.
The prosecution, therefore, asked Principal Magistrate Tom Olando to release him and close the case.
Olando further ordered police not to interfere with Wekesa activities in Tongaren.
Wekesa, who is the founder and leader of the New Jerusalem Church, appeared before the Bungoma Law Courts, where one of the 2022 presidential candidates, Professor George Wajackoyah, represented him.
In the hearing on Tuesday, an Office of Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP) officer informed the Court that the State had decided to close Wekesa’s file.
Wekesa briefly expressed his dissatisfaction with the arrest and arraignment, arguing that he fully complied with the investigators.
He further argued that he accompanied DCI officers to his home, where they investigated his religious doctrines. He said:

Yesu wa Tongaren was being investigated for suspected cultic activities, the prosecution stated on 12 May while appearing before Bungoma Principal Magistrate.
The preacher was also facing investigations into possible activities relating to radicalisation, money laundering, and acquiring proceeds of crime.
Investigators also probed possible links to teaching radical ideologies to his followers, some of whom were minors.
Wekesa was first arrested on 10 May 2023, and he had been in police custody since then.
He welcomed the court’s ruling, with his lawyers asking the Government to stop harassing religious leaders as everyone is free to worship according to Article 32 of the constitution.

Kenyan Court Orders Police To Release Preacher "Yesu wa Tongaren"

Kenyan authorities have imposed a 30-day dusk-to-dawn curfew on the 320-hectare ranch owned by a pastor who is accused of directing his followers to fast to death.
The ranch, which is near the town of Malindi, has been declared a “disturbed area and an operation zone.”
The country’s interior minister announced on Wednesday that for 30 days, the area will be subjected to a curfew between 6 PM to 6 AM.
However, human rights activists and journalists have criticised the move to bar them from accessing the ranch.
As of Thursday evening, the death toll in the cult investigation stood at 95.
On Wednesday, police took 22 people into custody during the search and rescue operation on the land.
Authorities have rescued 34 people from the property, while the Kenya Red Cross Society said that 314 people were still missing.
The owner of the ranch, pastor Paul Mackenzie, is set to remain in police custody until at least 2 May.
The director of public prosecutions, Noordin Haji, on Wednesday, ordered investigating officers to identify the assets of the suspects for purposes of preservation, confiscation, and forfeiture.
Meanwhile, a famous self-proclaimed televangelist Ezekiel Ombok Odero of the New Life Prayer Centre was arrested on Thursday on allegations of killing his followers.

Kenyan Officials Impose Curfew On Cult Leader's Ranch

A prominent Kenyan evangelist, Pastor Ezekiel Odero, has been arrested and his church located on the coast has been shut down.
Kenyan police are currently conducting investigations into a religious sect led by another preacher, Paul Mackenzie Nthenge, that has been linked to the death of almost a hundred people due to starvation.
Odero was arrested on Thursday hours after the police inspected a funeral home near his New Life Prayer Centre church in Mavueni, Kilifi county, reported <a href="https://www.africanews.com/2023/04/27/another-kenyan-pastor-arrested-amid-probe-into-cult-like-deaths/">africanews</a>.
Police said that they had established that morgue attendants had been collecting bodies at the church premises.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Coast regional commissioner Rhoda Onyancha said:

This morning we arrested Pastor Ezekiel Odero on allegations of the deaths that have been occurring at his premises.
</blockquote>
Odero preacher has not responded to the allegations.
Police are also investigating Odero’s alleged relationship with Nthenge, who is said to have told followers to starve themselves in order to “meet Jesus”.
By Wednesday, 26 April, Kenyan authorities had recovered 95 bodies of people suspected to have died of starvation and buried in shallow graves at Mackenzie Nthenge’s farm.
Nthenge, who is already in custody, has denied wrongdoing. He is due in court on 02 May.

Another Kenyan Pastor Arrested Amid Investigations Into Starvation Deaths

Since last week, police in Kenya have exhumed 95 bodies of people believed to have starved to death, from shallow graves.
The deaths have been linked to Pastor Paul Mackenzie, a controversial preacher at Good News International Church who is accused of brainwashing his followers and leading them to their deaths..
Police say, Mackenzie, a televangelist, indoctrinated his followers, asking them to abandon “earthly life”.
<a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/4/25/why-did-73-kenya-cult-members-starve-to-death">Al Jazeera</a> reported that the controversial preacher asked his followers to meet at his 325-hectare (800-acre) farm in a village called Shakahola in Kilifi county for a fast “to meet Jesus”.
Mackenzie allegedly instructed his followers to quit their jobs, drop out of formal schools, stop feeding on “worldly food”, and not seek medical treatment in hospitals when sick.
The church members met on Saturdays under a tree from 9 AM to 5 PM for “life lessons”.
He allegedly told them that the fast would count only if they gathered together, and offered them his farm as a fasting venue.
Mackenzie also ordered his followers to destroy all documents given by the government, including national IDs and birth certificates.
On 13 April this year, the Kenyan government intervened after two children were reported to have starved and suffocated to death by their parents on Mackenzie’s advice on March 16 and 17.
Investigations by the police led them to Shakahola where 16 emaciated people were found, four of whom died before reaching the hospital.
At least 27 people were rescued and admitted to the hospital for severe malnutrition but some of them are still refusing to eat.
The followers say they were told to starve to avoid going to hell.
Residents said about 300 people lived on the Shakahola farm.
Coastal Area regional boss Rhoda Onyancha told reporters on Wednesday that a 30-day curfew had been imposed in the area. <a href="https://www.aa.com.tr/en/africa/death-toll-hits-95-as-8-more-childrens-bodies-exhumed-from-kenyan-cult-leaders-homestead/2882332#">She said:</a>

President William Ruto on Monday said the cult leader belongs in prison as “what is being witnessed in Shakahola is akin to terrorism”.
Anthony Muheria, the archbishop of Nyeri Catholic Archdiocese in central Kenya, said:

Religion cannot be and should not be the cause of people losing lives through radical extremism that people have to do exceptional things to gain blessings from God.
</blockquote>
Mackenzie surrendered to the police on 14 April and is still in custody pending investigations.
Mackenzie was arrested in 2017 on charges of “radicalisation” after urging children not to attend school because education was not recognised by the Bible.
Two years later, he closed the church and moved to the coastal town of Shakahola.
He was arrested again in March this year after two children starved to death in the custody of their parents.
Mackenzie was released on bail of 100 000 Kenyan shillings ($700) and told local media he was “shocked about the accusations”.
But less than three weeks later, a police raid in a forest near the coastal town of Malindi led investigators to exhume the woodland for mass graves.

Kenyan Cult Leader Instructed Followers To Starve Themselves To Meet Jesus

A Kenyan pastor, Yesu Wa Tongaren, who claims to be the Christian Messiah, has reportedly sought police protection after members of his community said he should be crucified over the Easter holiday.
It was claimed that Yesu Wa Tongaren, whose real name is Eliud Wekesa, performed a miracle of turning water into tea.
According to a Kenyan publication, <a href="https://www.tuko.co.ke/entertainment/celebrities/493247-yesu-wa-tongaren-kenyans-bungoma-man-crucified-jesus/">TUKO.co.ke</a>, Wekesa also has a group of 12 disciples. His wife was quoted as saying:

Recently he made the water turn to tea. People drank it and were very happy and more remained and some carried it home.
</blockquote>
One Facebook user said that since Yesu Wa Tongaren claims to be the Messiah, he should also be crucified on the cross. Said the writer:

Huyu yesu wa Bungoma lazima tumsulubishe. Haezi jiita Yesu na hajateswa can’t happen Ama mnaonaje (This Bungoma man should be crucified. He cannot call himself Jesus without suffering. What do you guys think?
</blockquote>
Members of his community in Bungoma argue that if he is really the Messiah, he should be crucified and he would also resurrect on the third day and ascend to heaven.
Posting on Twitter, a Kenyan social media personality Omwamba said Wekesa has since reported the threats to the police station. He wrote:

Self-proclaimed jesus christ of Bungoma (yesu wa Tongaren) now claims that his life is in danger.
This is after a section of residents of Bungoma were overheard saying he must be crucified during Easter the same way Jesus was crucified.
The residents have assured him that if he is truly the messiah, he will resurrect on the third day and go to heaven after the crucifixion so he should not worry at all.
He has since reported the matter to the police station.

Wekesa recently told TUKO.co.ke that God’s army was protecting him from any harm and those who plan to crucify him will only do so in their dreams.

Kenyan Pastor Who Claims To Be Messiah Seeks Police Protection After Threats Of Crucifixion

A Kenyan court has ordered a family of two wives and 13 children to bury their husband on a boundary between their two neighbouring pieces of land to avoid an impending family dispute.
Chief Magistrate Stella Atambo also ordered that the grave should be dug equally from both sides of the land and that both parties should have ease in accessing the graveyard.
The now-deceased’s second wife, Ann Njeri Mbote, was the one who went to court to stop the burial preparations.
She argued that she has not been involved in preparations since the death of her husband with whom they had six children.
The family of the late Christopher Mbote of Kiambu was also ordered to have a Title Deed of that particular piece of land bearing the names of the two wives with whom he had sired a total of 13 children. Ruled CM Atambo:

The Court orders that the deceased Christopher Mbote be buried on a parcel of land known as LR13537/101.
That the place of burial shall be excised from the mother title and a separate title thereof shall be issued in the joint names of the two wives.

Both wives, represented by their lawyers, agreed that the deceased will be buried on 3 February.
Mbote (78), had sired seven children with his first wife, Margret Waithira.
According to his family, he wished to be buried in his rural home in Gatundu.
He was supposed to be buried on Friday before the second wife went to court to block the process.
The first wife had already dug a grave on her property.

Kenyan Court Orders Two Wives To Bury Husband At The Boundary Between Their Properties

A Kenyan man who assaulted his wife and sealed her genitalia with super glue in May 2020, has been sentenced to 50 years in jail by a Chuka Magistrate.
James Kifo Muriuki was charged with sexual assault, attempted murder, committing an unnatural offence and acting indecently against his wife.
Despite denying the charges, Muriuki was found guilty by Principal Magistrate Njoki Kahara of the Chuka Law Courts on 23 December 2022.
Allegations were that Muriuki had come back home to Tharaka Nithi after working in Nairobi for some time and confronted his wife.
He allegedly ordered her to strip naked and reveal to him all the men she had slept with while he was away.
He then beat her and put pepper, salt and super glue on her genitalia and used a knife to push the mixture into her private parts.
It was also alleged that Muriuki sealed her mouth and ears and left her for dead.

Kenyan Man Seals Wife's Private Parts With Super Glue

Kenyans have said life during William Ruto’s first 100 days has been been very difficult and different from what they were expecting.
<a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/william-ruto-declared-winner-of-kenyas-presidential-election/">Ruto came to power following the August 9 polls</a>, casting himself as a champion for the downtrodden, vowing to create jobs and tackle a cost-of-living crisis that has left many Kenyans struggling to put food on the table.
Kenyan shop attendant Winnie Wanjiru Mwaura was brimming with hope when she signed up to be an election agent for William Ruto during the August 9 polls and was elated when he became president.
But barely 100 days after the rags-to-riches businessman took office on September 13, the 21-year-old wants nothing to do with him. The first-time voter told the <a href="https://nation.africa/kenya/news/-life-is-worse-president-ruto-s-first-100-days-in-office-4063336">Nation</a>:

More pain for Kenyans in new Ruto, IMF loan deal
When Ruto (56) came to power, he slashed food and fuel subsidies introduced by his predecessor Uhuru Kenyatta arguing that the interventions had “not borne any fruit.”
Their removal was a request from the International Monetary Fund, a major lender to the East African economic powerhouse. 
Business analysts including Ken Gichinga, chief economist at business analytics firm Mentoria Economics say the move to remove the fuel subsidy was not very strategic as it has led to a slower economy, rising inflation and higher interest rates.
The Central Bank of Kenya raised interest rates by a cumulative 1.75 per cent in 2022, while inflation soared to a five-year high of 9.6 per cent in October.
Even Ruto’s pet project, the 50-billion-shilling ($408-million) “hustler fund”, has sparked controversy, with some accusing him of abandoning promises to make the credit scheme interest-free.
The fund, launched last month, will offer personal loans of up to 50 000 Kenyan shillings, with interest charged at eight per cent a year, lower than the rate of inflation.
Borrowers have already complained of difficulty in getting loans higher than 1 000 Kenyan shillings approved, despite the fund’s stated objective of boosting financial access for the country’s poorest citizens.
Ruto, who marked his one-hundredth day on the job on Thursday, also failed or neglected to deliver on his campaign pledge to achieve gender parity in his cabinet, naming just seven women to his 22-member team.
Despite a “disappointing” start, however, Manyora, who supported Ruto’s opponent Raila Odinga during the polls, said it was too early to dismiss the president and his team.

Kenyans Say 100 Days Under President Ruto Have Been Very Difficult

Kenyan world 800m athletics record holder David Rudisha has told local media how he survived after a plane he was travelling in crash-landed on Saturday evening.
The plane which was carrying him and five others came down near a park in Kajiado county in Kenya’s southeast.
The retired Olympic champion told the Daily Nation newspaper:

All was well close to seven or eight minutes into the flight when the engine of the plane suddenly went quiet.
</blockquote>
Rudisha described the moment as scary, when one of the plane’s wings hit a tree, spun and landed on a rocky field. Pictures from the scene suggest that the plane also flipped over.
One of the occupants was reportedly being treated in a hospital with injuries after the crash. Others who had minor injuries were taken to the hospital and later discharged.
Rudisha who was reportedly unhurt was on his way back from attending the annual Maasai Olympics event at Kimana Wildlife Sanctuary in Kajiado county.
Rudisha holds the 800m world record he set at the London Olympics in 2012. 
The 2012 and 2016 Olympic 800m champion who last raced internationally five years ago, reportedly said he is considering transitioning into coaching.
He missed time in the last Olympic cycle due to a quad muscle strain, back problems, a car crash and surgery for a broken ankle. He underwent left leg surgery last November.

Kenyan World Athletics Champion Survives Plane Crash

The second batch of Kenyan troops is due to arrive in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Wednesday.
They are part of a regional force deployed for a peacekeeping mission in the east of the country, according to BBC News.
Armed groups have stepped up attacks in recent months raising concern about the threat they pose to the region’s security.
More than 900 Kenyan troops will be based near the town of Goma in the volatile region.
Burundi soldiers have been operating in South Kivu province since August.
The Kenyan troops will be in North Kivu province where the M23 rebels have seized more territory in recent months and displaced thousands of people.
The Congolese government is set to resume talks with representatives of various armed groups later this month in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi.
The<a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/rwanda-responds-to-renewed-provocation-by-drc-armed-forces/"> current crisis erupted in November 2021,</a> when the largely defunct March 23 Movement (M23) militant group carried out strikes on military positions of the FARDC in the villages of Chanzu and Runyonyi in North Kivu Province, just west of the Ugandan and Rwandan borders.
The longstanding rivalry between Uganda and Rwanda in the DRC and the Great Lakes region is a key driver of the current crisis. There is a profound level of mistrust at all levels, between the DRC and its neighbours, particularly Rwanda, Uganda, and Burundi, as well as between all of these neighbours.
In August this year, Rwandan troops attacked soldiers inside DR Congo and aided the M23 rebel group with weapons and support, a United Nations group of experts said.

Named Dida, the elephant was known by many people for its long tusks and was popular with tourists.
Dida was aged between 60 and 65 years – well beyond the average life expectancy for an elephant in the wild.
Posting on Twitter attaching images of the elephant, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) said:

She shepherded her herd through many seasons and challenging times. She served as both the subject of various documentaries and an iconic tourist attraction.
Those who got to know her through pictures and videos as well as those who had the exquisite pleasure of meeting her in person will remember her.

Dida lived in the expansive Tsavo East National Park in Kenya’s southeast, which earned her the name “the queen of Tsavo” from conservationists and tourists.
Tsavo forms the largest protected area in the wildlife-rich country.

Conservation group Tsavo Trust described Dida as a “true embodiment of an iconic cow” who will be remembered by future generations of elephants. It posted on Facebook:

Africa’s "Largest" Female Tusked Elephant, Dies In Kenya Aged 65

Africa University (AU) inaugurated Reverend Professor Peter Mageto as the university’s fifth Vice-Chancellor on Saturday, 22 October, while also celebrating its 30th anniversary.
Vice Chancellor Rev Prof Mageto replaces the late Prof Munashe Furusa who died in 2021.
Rev Prof Mageto, who is from Kenya, was Africa University’s interim Vice Chancellor since the death of Prof Furusa.
The new VC was presented with the institution’s symbols which included a mace, medallion, and logo.
The inauguration and anniversary celebrations were done at the institution’s campus.
In giving his inaugural address, Rev Prof Mageto expressed gratitude to the United Methodist Church for sponsoring his education. He said:

Africa University Inaugurates New Vice Chancellor

The Foreign Press Association, Africa has issued a statement on the shooting and killing of Pakistani journalist Arshad Sharif in Kenya on Sunday. An initial police report said officers shot him while he was in a moving vehicle in a case of mistaken identity. Sharif was a critic of Pakistan’s military as well as a vocal supporter of ousted Prime Minister Imran Khan. The 49-year-old left Pakistan in August after complaining of harassment. He had previously been in the UK and Dubai before travelling to Kenya. It is not known exactly what he was doing in the East African country. FPA Condemns The Shooting And Killing Of Pakistani Journalist In Kenya

William Ruto was sworn in as Kenya’s fifth president on Tuesday at a ceremony attended by tens of thousands of people in the capital, Nairobi.
Ruto narrowly won the 9 August election with 50.5% of the vote, to his main rival Raila Odinga’s 48.8%.
Ruto hailed his inauguration as “a moment like no other”, adding that a “village boy” had become president.
But Odinga did not attend. He issued a statement saying he had “serious concerns” about his opponent’s victory.
Odinga has alleged that the result was rigged, but the Supreme Court has ruled the election was free and fair.
Ruto, who was Kenya’s Vice President from 2012 to 2022, was handed a copy of Kenya’s constitution and a sword to represent the transfer of power from President Uhuru Kenyatta.
With his hand on a Bible, the 55-year-old swore to preserve and protect the constitution. He said:

Standing here today is testimony that there is God in heaven. I want to thank God because a village boy has become the president of Kenya.

Unlike his predecessor Uhuru, who is the son of Kenya’s first President Jomo Kenyatta, Ruto grew up in rural areas.
He also portrayed himself as a hustler who was challenging an attempt by two dynasties – the Odingas and Kenyattas – to hang on to power.
Raila is the son of Kenya’s first Vice-President Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.
Ruto had conciliatory words for Odinga and all his opponents. He said:

There was also a handshake between the outgoing Kenyatta and Ruto despite their differences during their second term in office.
Kenyatta has stepped down at the end of his two terms. He backed Odinga in the election, saying Ruto was unworthy to serve as president.
Kenyatta congratulated Ruto on his win but only a day before his inauguration.
About 20 heads of state from across Africa attended the event.

William Ruto Sworn In As Kenya President

The president of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Nick Mwendwa is back in office in a development that is expected to result in the lifting of sanctions imposed by FIFA.
In 2021, Mwendwa was suspended after Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed ordered investigations into the federation’s finances.
FIFA responded by banning Kenya from all international football competitions citing government interference in running the game in the East African country.
The Kenyan government appointed a transition committee to take over the operations at KFK but FIFA disowned the committee.
Following six months of investigation, the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) withdrew charges levelled against the FA boss, allowing him to resume his duties.
In a letter addressed to FIFA, Mwendwa confirmed that he has resumed his duties at KFK. He wrote:

Reference is made to my letter dated November 29, 2021, with regard to the interim transfer of my powers and responsibilities as FKF President to the FKF Vice President.
In this regard, following the withdrawal of charges by the Directorate of Public Prosecution on July 8, 2022, I hereby wish to inform your good office that I have resumed my duties as the FKF president, with immediate effect, in accordance with Article 42 of the FKF constitution (2017).

Once FIFA acknowledges the letter, the sanctions against the Kenyan FA will be lifted.

Kenya Football Association President Reinstated

Kenya’s outgoing President, Uhuru Kenyatta, Friday, declared three days of national mourning to commemorate the life and times of Queen Elizabeth II who passed away on Thursday.
Queen Elizabeth II, the United Kingdom’s longest-serving monarch, died on Thursday afternoon at Balmoral, Scotland, aged 96, after reigning for 70 years.
In a statement issued on Friday, Kenyatta said the mourning period will commence on the eve of Friday, September 9, 2022, and end, at sunset, on Monday, September 12.
Kenyatta ordered all Kenyan-led state agencies, both local and abroad, to ensure that all Kenyan flags within their premises are flown at half mast during the three-day mourning period. He said:

Kenya's President Declares Three-Day National Mourning In Honour Of Queen Elizabeth

Kenya has suspended the r-opening of schools citing the ongoing process of tallying ballots.
The East African country went to the polls on the 9the of August 2022 where the electorate voted to elect the President, members of the National Assembly and Senate, county governors of Kenya and members of the 47 county assemblies of Kenya. 
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) said tallying was still going on with Kenya’s electoral officials on Friday blaming the delay in announcing the result of the country’s presidential election on candidates’ agents for slowing down the national tally of votes.

Kenya’s Deputy President William Ruto is leading the presidential race in elections held on Tuesday, 9 August 2022.
There are four candidates in the race to State House namely Ruto, Raila Odinga, George Wajackoyah and David Mwaure Waihiga.
Earlier on Thursday, Odinga was leading the race with 51.60%, followed by Ruto who had 47.74% of the vote. George Wajackoyah and David Waihiga had garnered 0.44% and 0.23% respectively.

Kenya Election Provisional Results Update: Odinga Leading With 51.60% Of The Vote

Thousands of Shona people in Kenya will vote in elections in the East African country for the first time this Tuesday, 9 August 2022.
The Shona community of Kenya were not allowed to vote in previous elections as they had not been granted full citizenship.
President Uhuru Kenyatta recently approved the Shona people and gave them full Kenyan citizenship to allow them to vote.
More than 22 million Kenyans are registered to vote today in a tightly contested presidential election as Deputy President William Ruto faces veteran opposition politician Raila Odinga.
Ruto who is deputised by Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua is contesting the presidency for the first time.
Odinga, who chose Martha Karua of the Azimio la Umoja coalition as his running mate, is contesting for the highest office for the fifth time after unsuccessful attempts in 1997, 2007, 2013 and 2017.
Other candidates in the race to State House are Roots party candidate George Wajackoyah and running mate Justina Wambui and David Mwaure Waihiga deputised by Ruth Mucheru on the Agano Party ticket.
340 candidates have been cleared to contest for 47 Senate seats, with 266 seeking gubernatorial positions in the 47 counties, and another 359 eyeing the 47 Woman Representative seats in the National Assembly.
Outgoing President Kenyatta, who is concluding his second and final term, is backing Odinga, rather than his deputy, Ruto.

Shona Community In Kenya To Vote For The First Time

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has expressed condolences following the death of former Kenyan president Mwai Kibaki who died on Friday, 22 April at the age of 90.
As a result, Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta, who was supposed to officiate at this week’s Zimbabwe International Trade Fair, has had to cancel his trip.
During a ZANU PF rally in Epworth, Harare on Saturday, 23 April, Mnangagwa observed a moment of silence in honour of Kenya’s third president who was in office from 2002 to 2013. Said Mnangagwa:

However, we received news that his predecessor Mwai Kibaki died last night (Friday). Today, President Kenyatta sent me a message that he is no longer able to make the trip.

Kenya’s President, Uhuru Kenyatta, has cancelled his planned visit to Zimbabwe following the death of the East African country’s former president Mwai Kibaki last week.
Kenyatta was scheduled to officially open the 2022 Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) to be held from April 26 to 30.
However, the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Nick Mangwana, revealed that Kenyatta is no longer coming to Zimbabwe. Mangwana <a href="https://twitter.com/nickmangwana/status/1518118863917010944">tweeted:</a>

Meanwhile, Kibaki, who served as Kenya’s third president from 2002 to 2013, died on the night of Thursday, 21 April aged 90.
Kibaki ended the late President Daniel Arap Moi’s more than two decades’ rule in 2002 when he took over power.

Uhuru Kenyatta Cancels Visit To Zimbabwe

The City of Bulawayo will honour Kenyan President, Uhuru Kenyatta by renaming one of its streets to his name.
This will be done during Kenyatta’s State visit to the city to officially open the 2022 Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) this month.
According to the latest council report, the Minister of Local Government and Public Works, July Moyo, wrote to the Bulawayo City Council (BCC) requesting the local authority to identify the possible street to be named after Kenyatta. Part of the letter read:

We have received a request to name a street in the City of Bulawayo after the President of Kenya, His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta in terms of the Names (Alteration) Act Chapter 10:14. 
This process should coincide with the State visit by His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta in April.
It is again during this visit that while he is guest of honour at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair, he will plant a tree and you are requested to provide suggestions of a location for the tree planting.

Bulawayo To Rename Street In Honour Of Uhuru Kenyatta

Police in Kenya have arrested seventeen suspects over the stoning of opposition leader and presidential candidate Raila Odinga’s chopper on Friday.
The ODM leader and Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate’s chopper was pelted with stones at Kabenes after the burial of Mzee Kibor in Uasin Gishu.
Uasin Gishu County Commissioner Stephen Kihara said the suspects implicated key political leaders in the region in planning the incident.
He said the politicians will be arrested to serve as a lesson to others. Said, Kihara:

We will not allow that to happen in our country and anyone doing that will not be tolerated.
</blockquote>
Kihara added that investigations were underway to ensure that anyone involved is arrested and charged.
Meanwhile, the National Police Service in a statement said those arrested were found to be in possession of money in Sh50 denominations and are assisting the police with investigations.
Earlier, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i condemned the attack and directed the National Police Service to investigate the incident and arrest the youths involved. Said Matiang’i:

Kenyan Opposition Leader Raila Odinga's Helicopter Pelted With Stones

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has officially endorsed the opposition Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga for the presidency.
Addressing delegates of the Mt Kenya region last week, Kenyatta urged his community to support Odinga, saying he has the best interests for the country.
He said he will have no problem supporting Deputy President William Ruto in future if he reforms. Said, Kenyatta:

This is the first time President Kenyatta was publicly telling his community that the ODM leader was his preferred successor.

In Odinga’s last three campaigns for office in 2007, 2013, and 2017, he challenged the outcomes, saying his victories were stolen. Deadly clashes followed the 2007 and 2017 votes.
But he made peace with Kenyatta in early 2018, effectively sidelining Ruto, who is standing with a new party called United Democratic Alliance, after quitting Jubilee.

Kenyan President Endorses Opposition Leader For Presidency

Zimbabwean preacher Walter Magaya is in Kenya where a large group of people thronged the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to welcome him.
Magaya’s followers could be seen lying prostrate on the ground and kneeling before him, weeping in fervent prayers while others were speaking in unknown tongues.
The self-proclaimed prophet, who is the founder and leader of Prophetic and Deliverance Ministries (PHD), is the East African country to attend a crusade organised by the Christ Pinnacle Embassy Ministries.
The crusade was organised by Apostle Backson Saning’o and Prophet David Losojo of the Christ Pinnacle Embassy Ministries.
Speaking to reporters in the company of Losojo and Backson earlier on Friday, Magaya promised his adherents “great sermons”. He said:

Walter Magaya Receives 'Unusual' Reception In Kenya

An AK-47 wielding Kenyan police officer shot dead six people, including his wife, and wounded two others before turning the gun on himself in Nairobi around 3 AM on Tuesday.
The officer first killed his wife in their home, shooting her in the neck with his service rifle before firing indiscriminately at neighbours, the Police Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said on Tuesday.
According to the DCI, three of the young men who were killed by the police officer were mourners who had just attended preparations for a funeral. It added:
