Shepherd Tsomondo, a former liberation war fighter, has been laid to rest, with speakers describing him as a disciplined cadre who should be emulated by others.
Tsomondo who was declared a Provincial hero succumbed to renal failure on Monday last week at the age of 64 and was buried in Norton last Friday with full military honours.
ZANU PF Mashonaland West provincial War Veterans League chairman <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Happison_Muchechetere">Happison Muchechetere</a> urged party members and supporters to emulate Tsomondo’s life, and promote political tolerance ahead of 2023 harmonised elections. 
Muchechetere encouraged Zimbabweans to desist from violence and urged them to focus on rebuilding the nation towards attaining Vision 2030 of an empowered upper-middle-income society.
Speaking at the burial, Tsomondo’s wife, Bybit Tsomondo, said she was only 16 when she met him in 1978. She added:
<blockquote>
 …up to the time of his death, we had a good understanding of each other (even as) people always wonder whether or not war veterans can marry each other and live in harmony. 
When we came from the war, we did not beat any one; as war veterans, we were taught discipline and if you want to win the people, you should shun violence.
</blockquote>
Tsomondo is survived by his wife, five children and eight grandchildren.

Former Liberation War Fighter Shepherd Tsomondo Buried

President Emmerson Mnangagwa Monday 02 October 2022 presided over the burial of liberation war fighter, Highten Nkomo, at the National Heroes Acre.
Nkomo, whose Chimurenga name was Billy Mzamo, <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/liberation-war-fighter-highten-nkomo-declared-national-hero/">died last week.</a>
In his speech, President Mnangagwa described Nkomo as a distinguished patriot, freedom fighter and one of the pioneering veterans of Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle. He added:
<blockquote>
We have lost an epitome of patriotism, commander and dedicated cadre who remained loyal to the Party and country, throughout his entire life.
</blockquote>

Highten Nkomo Burial: Pictures From National Heroes Acre

Political analyst and publisher <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Ibbo_Mandaza">Ibbo Mandaza</a> has described President <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Emmerson_Mnangagwa">Emmerson Mnangagwa</a>’s belated honour bestowed on <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Ndabaningi_Sithole">Ndabaningi Sithole</a> and <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/James_Chikerema">James Chikerema</a> as a vote-buying gimmick. 
Mnangagwa recognised Sithole and Chikerema as national heroes on the occasion of the country’s 42nd Heroes Day commemorations last week.
Both were allies-turned-enemies of late former state leader Robert Mugabe, who denied them the honour due to grudges dating back to the trenches in the liberation struggle.
Sithole came from Chipinge and Chikerema from Mashonaland West with both commanding a strong sentiment from their tribesmen.
Mandaza told ZimLive that Mnangagwa is not sincere and is targeting the late pioneering nationalists’ sympathisers ahead of elections next year. He said:

Such ahistorical nonsense, full of dubious political motives.
The historic question should be; why and how was this obvious hero of Zimbabwe’s nationalist struggle so ignominiously dumped by his erstwhile comrades, including Mugabe and Mnangagwa himself?
The past is also the present in Zimbabwe’s nasty liberation narrative. Fellow historians and compatriots need to exorcise this terrible beauty, our history.
So, if, as a fellow student of Zimbabwe’s liberation history has correctly observed, Mnangagwa lacks the depth of perception to make (independently) the intervention in official history.
Who are the people around him that came up with such a profound acknowledgement, and why.

Sithole who was ZANU’s founding leader was deposed by Mugabe in 1975 through the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Mgagao_Declaration">Mgagao declaration</a>.
He went on to become the opposition leader of a less popular ZANU-Ndonga and had little success after independence, with his support base narrowing to <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Chipinge">Chipinge</a> where he was MP from 1995 to 2000.
Similarly, Chikerema, an uncle and Mugabe contemporary had the same treatment under the late veteran leader.
The process that is being used to deal with the conferment of hero status has for years been criticised by some analysts who said the issue was being politicised by the ruling ZANU PF.

Ibbo Mandaza Says ED’s Belated Honour Of Ndabaningi Sithole, James Chikerema A Vote-buying Gimmick

Veteran politician and war veteran <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Margaret_Dongo">Margaret Dongo</a> said she went into opposition politics to fight for liberation struggle ideals that the ruling ZANU PF was failing or neglecting to champion.
She told Alpha Media Holdings chairman <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Trevor_Ncube">Trevor Ncube</a> on the platform In Conversation with Trevor, that she had tried, and failed, to change ZANU PF from within by being outspoken and critical of the ruling party’s policies.
Dongo was eventually expelled from ZANU PF during the Robert Mugabe era.
Responding to a question by Trevor Ncube who wanted to understand how she managed to get into opposition politics when it was considered dangerous to go against Mugabe, Dongo said:
<blockquote>
True I did, but it was a very hard decision to make.
I had no choice because there is something that I want to make clear,  you know my love for the country, in terms of Margaret Dongo, the former liberation fighter, what comes first in my life is my country.
So probably it is because of the experience that I got from a tender age, worse off during the armed struggle and after, that it forced me to actually go into opposition politics.
The idea was not to destroy the country, but the idea was to continue to fight for the ideals of the liberation struggle.

Among many things, liberation fighters fought for the establishment of one-man-one-vote as the basis of government in Zimbabwe; and the elimination of oppression in all forms.

Margaret Dongo Says She Went Into Opposition Politics To Fight For Liberation Struggle Ideals

90-year-old liberation war hero Morton Malianga has died. His death was announced on Twitter by the Sunday Mail which promised to give more details later.
The NewsHawks Posted a short biography about Malianga and said he was one of the pioneers of the liberation struggle:
<blockquote>Moton Dizzy Paul Malianga, one of the pioneers of Zimbabwe’s armed liberation struggle, has died. Born in 1930, Malianga was jailed 10 years by the racist Rhodesian regime for his nationalism. He was VP of the National Democratic Party and later Zapu’s public affairs secretary.</blockquote>
According to his <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Morton_Malianga">biography </a> on Pindula:
<blockquote>Morton was born at Old Umtali Mission on 8 June 1930. His father was a teacher and evangelist and at one time the editor of the Methodist Church paper called Umbowo. He went to <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/index.php?title=St_Francis_Xavier_College&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1" title="St Francis Xavier College (page does not exist)">St Francis Xavier College</a>, Kutama for his primary education and finished in 1947. Later he went to Khaiso Secondary School, Adams College and Ohlange Institute in South Africa.
He attained his Matriculation Certificate in 1953. After leaving school he worked as a clerk in a department store in South Africa, and in 1955 was promoted to manager. In 1957 he obtained a professional certificate in accountancy, ASCA (SA).
He returned to Zimbabwe 1957 after having been involved with the South African ANC. He became a teacher in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Highfields" title="Highfields">Highfields</a>. In 1958 he joined the ANC. In 1959 he left teaching to dedicate his time to politics after the arrest of many nationalist leaders in February 1959, among them <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Maurice_Nyagumbo" title="Maurice Nyagumbo">Maurice Nyagumbo</a>.
After the arrests, consultations were made amoung those who were outside leading to the formation of the National Democratic Party (NDP) in 1960. Malianga became its Vice President at its first congress in November 1960 and he held this position until 1961.
He was Secretary for Public Affairs in ZAPU 1962.He was a leading figure in the opposition against Joshua Nkomo and formation of ZANU in 1963, becoming its Cario representative and, in 1964, its Secretary for Youth and Culture.</blockquote>
