Mbare midwife Esther Zinyoro, (aka Mbuya Gwena), is still operating from her old squalid lodgings at Tagarika flats despite making headlines five years ago.
The traditional midwife came into national focus in 2019 when it emerged that she had turned her home into a maternity ward to help expectant mothers in her neighbourhood.
She rose to fame at a time when medical staff — junior doctors and nurses — were on strike over poor working conditions.
The First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa visited Mbuya Gwena in November 2019 during the week that she had helped deliver 100 babies in her tiny two-room apartment.
Mnangagwa donated foodstuffs and some household goods.
On Thursday Mbuya Gwena told <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/health/article/200010517/time-has-stood-still-for-iconic-mbare-midwife">NewsDay</a> that she no longer has a mobile phone and cannot afford one.
She, however, said the First Lady made her work easier as more people now appreciate the work she is doing. She said:
<blockquote>
Since the visit, my popularity has increased. I am now known countrywide and the number of people seeking my services has increased.
I really don’t know why they are shunning hospitals and other modern medical facilities by coming here. The visit also liberated me in the way I do my business.
Soon after the visit, Good Samaritans began flocking to assist with several services, and of interest is a man from the Mufakose suburb who started to help with water tanks to help with sanitation issues.

Mbuya Gwena, who is a self-styled prophetess at St John Apostolic Church, said she relies on her God-given talent. She said:
<blockquote>
When assisting the women, I use my spiritual prowess and as a result, I have managed to assist even those with complications that would have been difficult at the hospitals.
I even dream about a client’s challenge and how they may need to be assisted to deliver safely.
</blockquote>
She has, however, faced resistance from health professionals who claim her activities had taken the country’s health system backward.
The traditional midwife said nurses at Edith Oppermann Clinic resented her and accused her of stealing their clients until she helped them solve a complex situation.
Gogo Gwena insists she is helping people deliver a gift from God.
Born in 1949, she has 10 children and 15 grandchildren.

Famous Mbare Midwife Still Delivering Babies In Squalid Conditions

The self-trained Mbare midwife, Mbuya Esther Zinyoyo-Gwena who made headlines after delivering 250 babies in 2 weeks during the famous nurses’ strike of 2019 has expressed interest in resuming her services.
TheFeedZW, a project of MagambaTV caught up with her and she shared her desire to acquire midwifery certification and resume her services.

Self-trained Mbare Midwife Mbuya Gwena Wants To Resume Services

Health officials are making follow-ups on infants who were delivered at home during a month-long withdrawal of labour by municipal nurses.
The exercise which follows six recorded perinatal deaths and two maternal deaths in November is premised at monitoring their conditions and to provide necessary interventions where necessary.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines <a href="https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&amp;q=perinatal+death+meaning">perinatal mortality as the number of stillbirths and deaths in the first week of life</a> while maternal death is defined <a href="https://www.ucc.ie/en/mde/definitionandclassificationofmaternaldeath/">as the death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy, irrespective of the duration and site of the pregnancy, from any cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy or its management</a> but not from accidental or incidental causes.
The withdrawal of services by polyclinics forced expecting mothers to look for help from traditional midwives including the famous <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/11/15/doctors-strike-traditional-midwife-delivers-100-babies-in-8-days/">Mbare-based Mbuya Gwena who at one point is reported to have delivered 100 babies in eight days.</a>
Health caregivers are, for three months now, on industrial action over unsustainable salaries and poor working conditions.

Follow Up On Home-Delivered Babies Following Perinatal And Maternal Deaths

The government has <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/11/19/edith-opperman-maternity-clinic-to-re-open-soon/">announced that it will be opening Opperman Maternity Clinicin Mbare</a> to help expecting mothers in the high-density suburb.
The government also said that it will be training traditional midwives who assisted pregnant women to deliver their babies when doctors were on the ongoing industrial action.
The development comes after <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/11/15/mbare-midwife-delivers-100-babies-in-8-days/">dozens of pregnant women delivered their babies at Mbuya Gwena’s place in Mbare</a> after hospitals and clinics turned them away since there are no health caregivers to assist them.
The announcement was made by the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Information, Nick Mangwana who posted on Twitter saying:
<blockquote> Govt announced a move to open Edith Operman Maternity Clinic for pregnant mothers in Mbare. It also announced the training of those nyamukutas (community midwives) who helpfully support those who deliver at home. Pregnancy and motherhood are known to be beautiful experiences.</blockquote>
The country health sector is collapsed as noted by the inadequacy of medicines and equipment in public health institutions, a situation which is being worsened by the absence of health practitioners who are on industrial action which started on the 3rd of September this year.
Meanwhile, the 2020 Budget Statement did not prioritise the sector which is clearly on its knees prompting some analysts to say that government officials do not care about the country’s healthcare system as they can afford to travel abroad for medication.

Govt To Train Traditional Midwives As It Moves To Re-Open Maternity Clinic In Mbare

Women who were assisted by Mbare-based Mbuya Gwena to deliver their babies have said that securing birth certificates for their newly born babies is likely to be a challenge as they are compelled to ask the traditional midwife to accompany them to the Registrar General’s office.
This is happening when scores of pregnant women are thronging Mbuya Gwena’s place to deliver their babies as public health institutions are turning them away as health caregivers are on industrial action which started on the 3rd of September this year. One of Mbuya Gwena’s clients, Mrs Appronia Jela of Hatfield said”
<blockquote>Imagine if we had given birth in a health facility, we could have just gotten the birth records before we are even discharged. Now this situation will force us to come back again requesting Mbuya Gwena to accompany us to the RG’s office, which is cumbersome.</blockquote>
Mrs Maud Siyakurima of Epworth expressed pessimism over getting birth certificates saying that Mbuya Gwena is always busy.

Mothers Forced To Revisit Mbuya Gwena When They Want Birth Certificates For Their Babies

Secretary-general of the Zimbabwe Hospitals Doctors Association (ZHDA) Dr Mthabisi Anele Bhebhe has regarded first lady, Auxillia Mnangagwa’s “endorsement” of a traditional midwife as taking the nation backwards. Posting Twitter, Dr Bhebhe said:
<blockquote>They’re taking us back to (the) dark ages. Kwatirikuyenda ndokwatabva. (We’re headed where we came from).</blockquote>
He speaks after Mrs Mnangagwa yesterday visited popular <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/11/15/mbare-midwife-delivers-100-babies-in-8-days/">Mbare-based traditional midwife Ms Esther Zinyoro, also known as Mbuya Gwena</a> after reports suggesting that she was helping pregnant women to deliver babies at her home.
This is happening when health caregivers in public health institutions are on the 76th day of salary and better working industrial action which left patients stranded.
The first lady donated groceries to Mbuya Gwena which made some to conclude that she was endorsing traditional midwifery at the expense of formal health institutions.

Dr Says "They're Taking Us Back To Dark Ages," As First Lady "Endorses" Traditional Midwife

A traditional midwife in Mbare high-density suburb, Ms Esther Zinyoro, also known as Mbuya Gwena has helped in the delivery of 100 babies within eight (8) days at her home at Tagarira flats.
This comes as public hospitals do not have health caregivers as they are on industrial action they embarked on the 3rd of September citing unsustainable salaries and poor working conditions. Speaking to the Herald, Mbuya Gwena said:
<blockquote>I have never assisted such huge numbers of women to deliver in my life. Yes, I sometimes assist women from my church should there be any need for assistance, but not as many as these ones.</blockquote>
The makeshift labour can, however, be a health hazard as Mbuya Gwena cannot prevent mother-child HIV transmission.
Some of the mothers whom Mbuya Gwena helped to deliver their babies urged the government to iron out differences with health caregivers saying that they ended up in Mbare after finding formal clinics closed.
