The Health and Child Care Ministry in Zimbabwe has reported a concerning increase in cholera deaths. As of Monday, there have been 108 suspected deaths and 5,030 new cases. The outbreak has been reported in 41 districts, with Buhera and Gutu being the most affected areas. Manicaland has the highest number of confirmed cases, followed by Matabeleland South and Harare, <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200018221/alarm-as-cholera-deaths-surge">NewsDay</a> reported citing the Ministry’s report. The outbreak has also been recorded in other provinces including Midlands, Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland West, Matabeleland North, and Mashonaland East. Read the report:

Fifty-five new suspected cholera cases, (1) suspected death and (0) laboratory-confirmed results were reported today (Monday). The cases were reported from Gutu (26).Buhera (10), Bikita (7), Chipinge (5), Chiredzi (5) and Mutare (2).
As of 16 October 2023, 97 cases are hospitalised at Bikita CTC (13), Zaka (5), Chiredzi (4), Gutu (19) in Masvingo Province, Buhera (33), Chipinge (17),Mutare Rural (2) in Manicaland Province, BRIDH (2) in Harare Province and Thorngrove (2) in Bulawayo.

<h3>Measures to combat cholera</h3>
The government of Zimbabwe has implemented several measures to prevent the spread of cholera. These include banning church camp meetings, open markets, and communal beer gatherings. Health experts are urging the government to declare the current cholera outbreak a national disaster, emphasizing the need for urgent action to address the situation. Community Working Group on Health executive director Itai Rusike said:

The outbreak is now spreading to other provinces and government may consider declaring the cholera outbreak a national disaster so thata wide range of agencies can come in to support the government with health promotion, treating cases and carrying out case tracing and that may result in reducing case fatalities.

Rusike emphasised the importance of implementing lasting solutions to tackle cholera in Zimbabwe, including providing clean and safe drinking water. <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Johannes_Marisa/">Johannes Marisa</a>, the president of the Medical and Dental Private Practitioners Association of Zimbabwe, supported this view, stating that efforts to contain cholera would be incomplete without improved water sanitation and infrastructure.
The Ministry of Health in Zimbabwe has provided a list of measures to combat cholera and other waterborne diseases. These measures focus on hygiene practices and prevention strategies. They include washing hands with soap and clean water, informing health workers about suspected cases, avoiding handshakes at public gatherings, drinking boiled or treated water, washing fruits and vegetables before consumption, using toilets instead of open defecation, cooking food thoroughly, seeking medical attention promptly, and maintaining good personal hygiene. The ministry emphasizes the severity and fast-acting nature of cholera, urging individuals to take preventive action and seek immediate treatment if suspected. Additionally, they advise taking salt and sugar solution if cholera is suspected while en route to a health facility to prevent dehydration. These measures aim to control the spread of cholera and protect public health.

Zimbabwe Health Ministry Reports Alarming Cholera Death Increase

According to the Zimbabwe Health Workers Union, high-ranking officials within the Ministry of Health and Child Care are engaging in sexual harassment by offering female employees financially rewarding workshops in exchange for sex.
The union’s general secretary, L. Sarai, sent a letter to the Acting Health Secretary on May 16, 2023, outlining these allegations. Additionally, Sarai accused department heads of taking work-related workshops that were intended for junior employees. These actions constitute serious violations of workplace conduct and must be addressed promptly to ensure the safety and well-being of all employees. Sarai said:

It has come to our attention that there is rampant abuse of authority by heads of department within the ministry concerning opportunities to attend work-related workshops and other assignments with monetary benefits.
These leaders attend workshops which are earmarked for junior employees and in some cases, not related to their line of work.
In most cases, invitation letters are directed to these heads, instead of passing these opportunities they then grab them for financial benefit.

According to the workers’ union, leaders in the Ministry of Health and Child Care who attend work-related workshops are not fulfilling their obligation to share the knowledge they gain with other staff members.
The union reports that in some cases, directors attend workshops that are meant to benefit junior officers, and upon their return, delegate the task of disseminating the information to others.
Additionally, the union has reported that some bosses are using work-related workshops to solicit sexual favours. Added the union:

It is very disturbing to note that opportunities that are meant for information sharing and learning are now being used in exchange for sexual favour by some male leaders.
We implore your good office to investigate this rot with a view to bring culprits to account for their misdeeds.

Sexual harassment in the workplace is illegal and unethical conduct that can lead to disciplinary action, termination of employment, civil lawsuits, and criminal charges. In many countries, including Zimbabwe, sexual harassment is a criminal offence punishable by law.
Additionally, such actions can lead to damage to the reputation of the organization and negatively impact the morale and productivity of employees. Employers have a legal and ethical responsibility to provide a safe and respectful work environment, and those who engage in sexual harassment can face serious legal and professional consequences.

Health Officials Offer Female Employees Workshops For Sex, Alleges Workers' Union

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Ministry_of_Health_and_Child_Care">Ministry of Health and Child Care</a> has been urged to present a strategy to tackle teenage pregnancies after it was revealed that over 700 girls between 10 and 14 years old gave birth in 2022.
This was highlighted in the Vital Statistics Report released by the Zimbabwe Statistical Agency (Zimstat). MDC legislator <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Ruth_Labode">Ruth Labode</a> said that this report underscores the urgent need to address the issue of teenage pregnancies. Said Labode:

Disaggregated data on the Distribution of Births by Age of Mother released during the launch of the Zimstat Vital Statistics Report shows that 700 girls aged 10 to 14 gave birth in 2022.
What does this say about this country? Could the Minister of Health and Child Care bring a Ministerial Statement and tell us what strategy they have to curb this scourge of teenage pregnancies. A ten-year-old is not a teenager but a baby.

Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Monica Mutsvangwa, agreed with Labode that the situation is very sad and needs to be addressed. She said that an inter-ministerial strategy will be implemented to tackle the issue of teenage pregnancies. The Ministry of Health is working on various strategies, which will be presented to Parliament. She added:

Members asked for a Ministerial Statement which will articulate step by step of what they are doing.  To have 700 young girls aged 10 to 14 getting pregnant is very sad.
This is something which we need to understand from the Home Affairs Ministry to see how many people have been jailed or castrated if they need to be.
A ten-year-old is a baby and for any person in his right sense to actually take her as a woman, I think there is an element of madness which needs to be dealt with; an element of cruelty or animal behaviour which needs to be dealt with.

Over 700 Girls Between 10 And 14 Years Gave Birth In 2022

A government survey has established that only 1% of students seeking to be enrolled in Zimbabwe’s medical schools get placed due to an acute shortage of training facilities, resulting in limited access to such training programmes.
This emerged during a workshop organised by Zimbabwe’s <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Ministry_of_Health_and_Child_Care">Ministry of Health and Child Care</a> titled the ‘Health Labour Market Analysis to Inform Health Workforce Strategic Planning and a Sustainable Health Workforce’ held on 7 February.
Reads in part the survey report tabled at the workshop:

With 397,185 applicants [queuing] for admission in the 2021 academic year, only 4,134 of the prospective health professions students were offered places – 1% of applicants got places to train.
There were an average of 89 applicants competing for every available seat for admission in 2021 – highly competitive. There is a capacity to train 4,476 health workers per year (theoretical capacity). Of the capacity, the production has been 3,334 per year (75% of the theoretical capacity).

The report said there is an average course completion rate of 80.6% for health or medical-related courses and a dropout rate of 19.4%. A total of 90% of those who complete their training obtain their professional qualifications and licences to practise.
The report also said 700 to 800 nurses are trained per year as well as 200 to 220 doctors, 90 to 110 pharmacists per year and between 27 and 31 laboratory scientists each year.
It said 34% of the registered trained health workers are not active and they have mostly emigrated, retired or changed jobs, <a href="https://www.universityworldnews.com/post.php?story=20230208112719437">University World News</a> reported.
The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Council_for_Higher_Education">Zimbabwe Council of Higher Education (ZIMCHE)</a> chief director of health and life sciences, Professor Felicity Gumbo, said some of the qualifications obtained outside Zimbabwe do not match local standards, hence students end up stranded or spend up to two years writing local examinations to be able to use their degrees.
The reasons why some foreign qualifications are not recognised in Zimbabwe include that they lack practical training through internships and other work-based learning.
The report also said that there has been a growth in the number of doctors, nurses and midwives.
It was recommended that the private sector should be engaged to optimise expanded contributions to training and employment.
It was also recommended that there should be a collaboration between the ministry of higher and tertiary education to align training plans with the ministry of health in line with the projected needs based on disease burden.

Ministry Of Health Is Hiring: Various Posts Under Global Fund Grants

The Ministry of Health and Child Care has urged members of the public who have malaria symptoms to seek medical attention within 24 hours to prevent deaths.
In response to questions by the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/seek-malaria-treatment-within-24-hours-to-avoid-death-government-warns/">Chronicle</a>, the Ministry said delays in accessing malaria treatment will lead to severe malaria that can lead to death. Said the ministry:
<blockquote>
Going for testing and treatment services within 24 hours of malaria symptoms (that include fever, headache, joint pains, loss of appetite, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting) will facilitate early cure and completing the treatment course will break the chain of malaria transmission. Testing and treatment for malaria is free and can be accessed from village health workers and local health facilities.
</blockquote>
The Ministry said members of the public should be on the lookout for severe malaria signs and symptoms that include:
<blockquote>
1). jaundice (yellow eyes), 
2). white palms (anaemia) 
3). very high temperature, 
4). severe body weakness (unable to sit/stand), 
5). passing very little coca-cola-coloured urine/not passing urine at all, 
6). severe vomiting.

During the first week of 2023, Zimbabwe recorded a total of 1 950 malaria cases and six deaths. Of the reported cases 212 were from under the age of five.
The Ministry also intends to conduct Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) in 25 districts during the 2022/2023 malaria season. 
Nine districts completed their spraying in 2022 and the remaining 16 districts are expected to finish by the end of January 2023. 
Indoor residual spraying is targeted at districts that have high malaria transmission.

Health Ministry Urges Those With Malaria Symptoms To Seek Help Within 24 Hours

The Ministry of Health and Child Care has reported that Zimbabwe recorded 151 deaths linked to malaria between January and October 2022.
The 2022 cumulative cases of Malaria stand at 92 310 as of October.
In its Weekly Diseases Surveillance report for the period 17 to 23 October, the ministry also said Zimbabwe recorded 1 650 malaria cases and 4 malaria deaths during the same week. 
The report also stated that Mashonaland East and Mashonaland Central Provinces, in that order, recorded 658 and 457 cases which are the highest in the land.
Meanwhile, the deaths were from Murewa District (2), Guruve District (1) and Harare (1).
The ministry also reported that 12.7 % of the reported cases, were from the under 5-year-olds category.

Zimbabwe Recorded 151 Malaria Deaths Between January And October 2022 - MoHCC

Vice President Constantino Chiwenga Friday last week met with medical practitioners and promised them that he will address their grievances. 
Chiwenga who doubles as the Minister of Health and Child Care (MoHCC), held a question and answer session at the launch of the National Surgical Obstetrics and Anaesthesia Strategy 2022-2025 in Victoria Falls.
They spoke about brain drain, salaries, houses and cars as well as the condition of service. <a href="https://www.zbcnews.co.zw/government-medical-professionals-engage/">ZBC News</a> cites Chiwenga as saying:
<blockquote>
We have now started to discuss issues and I think a lot of progress has been achieved and more is going to come.
</blockquote>
Kudzai Kanyepi, a surgeon said the government should work on retaining medical practitioners it would have educated. Said Kanyepa:
<blockquote>
Many of us want to come home, we are second-class citizens everywhere else except at home. There is only one home. We want to come home, but we want a soft landing. Many of us left and had to sell everything we had to fund our training, so, now we are starting again from nothing.

In response, Chiwenga said those who would want to invest should approach relevant authorities for assistance. 
He also said the government had granted duty-free importation of vehicles and medical equipment adding:

Just bring your papers to the Secretary because we want you to make this nation healthier.

Responding to Wilfred Muteweye, a surgeon who had pleaded with the minister on behalf of junior doctors to be provided with free accommodation, Chiwenga said that was the government’s plan.

VP Chiwenga Promises Medical Practitioners He Will Address Their Grievances

The Health ministry’s acting finance director Lynette Tennis has said late disbursement of funds is constraining the Health and Child Care ministry’s operations.
Tennis told the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Health during a workshop for legislators monitoring special drawing rights (SDR) projects on Tuesday 27 September 2022 that very few funds were being disbursed from the 2022 health budget.
The workshop was facilitated by the Southern Africa Parliamentary Support Trust, <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200001130/payout-delays-constrain-health-ministry">NewsDay</a> reported. Tennis said:

The releases have been too little to make an impact to whatever we have to do as the Ministry of Health to achieve our mandate. The hospitals have not been getting support from the Ministry of Finance and as we move forward we received a circular in August that made it worse saying there is need for due diligence to be taken for all procurement that is being done. We are yet to get responses for whatever we submitted to them.
Funds have not been coming to the ministry, releases have been too little for the ministry, and we have not been getting support from Treasury. We managed to get 11% of our capital budget and we always ask when the other is going to come.

Tennis added that the ministry had not received any release from the Finance ministry since August 2022. 
She added that the ministry still has challenges in the procurement of medicines because the Finance Ministry is not releasing funds, they cite cash-flow challenges.
Her remarks come at a time when South African health officials are accusing <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/south-africa-doctor-tells-zimbabweans-to-get-medical-treatment-in-zimbabwe/">Zimbabweans of worsening that country’s problems in the health sector.</a>
They say thousands of Zimbabweans were flocking to South African hospitals to get medical assistance.
Finance minister Mthuli Ncube allocated ZW$117.7 billion (14.9%) of the ZW$968.2 billion 2022 national budget to the Health ministry.

Officials Say Allocations To Health Ministry Are Delayed And Insignificant

Auditor-general (AG) <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Mildred_Chiri">Mildred Chiri</a> has exposed the rot in the country’s health sector noting issues such as a shortage of personnel and ambulances as well as unauthorised expenditures.
The audit report on the appropriation accounts, finance and revenue statements and funds accounts for 2021 comes at a time when South Africa is accusing Zimbabweans of straining the neighbouring country’s healthcare facilities.
In her report, Chiri said:

i). the Harare Government Dental Centre, which is the country’s largest referral centre, is operating below capacity with insufficient human resources and equipment.
ii). the facility offers oral health services to patients and provides training and internship to dental technicians, therapists and assistants.
iii). it requires 8 dental chairs and 8 dental mobile carts, but it only has 1 of each.

Chiri also said she had reported in 2018, that Masvingo and Gweru provincial hospitals failed to support creditors’ balances as they did not maintain creditors’ records. The situation is still the same.
<h2>Unsupported expenditure:</h2>
Chiri also exposed unsupported expenditure at 11 health institutions visited in 2018 which incurred expenditure amounting to $160 295 that was not fully supported by source documents such as requisitions, invoices or receipts as well as goods received notes.
Nine health institutions visited in 2018 incurred expenditures amounting to $143 154 without seeking competitive quotations and subsequently compiling comparative schedules.
Also, the health institutions had no service level agreements in cases where the acquisition of goods and services was from a sole supplier.
Analysts fear that the crisis might worsen if the government goes on with the Private Voluntary Organisations (PVOs) Amendment Bill which will likely chase away donor funding from the sector.

Auditor-General Chiri Exposes The Rot In Zimbabwe's Health Sector

The Ministry of Health and Child Care has announced embarked on a mass drug administration exercise to fight and eliminate trachoma, a preventable disease of the eyes caused by infection. Pindula News reported in 2022 that there was a <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/10/16/matabeleland-records-spike-in-number-of-people-losing-sight-due-to-trachoma/">spike in the number of people losing sight</a> because of trachoma in the country. A statement issued by the Health Ministry says the campaign started on the 11th of this month. Reads the statement:

The Ministry of Health and Child Care working together with SightSavers, World Vision, Basilizwi Trust and WelthungerHilfe has launched a mass treatment / Mass Drug Administration (MDA) campaign for the treatment of trachoma disease which if left untreated causes blindness. 
A ten-day mass treatment campaign will run in the districts of Shamva, Bindura, Rushinga, Binga, Marondera, Nyanga, Mutasa and Gweru beginning on the 11th July of 2022 to the 20th of July 2022.
The mass treatment for trachoma prevents children and adults from going needlessly blind. All people aged zero (0) months and above in targeted districts will receive a single dose of medicine once or twice a year over three to seven years to treat, control and eventually eliminate the pain and burden of trachoma in our communities.
The communities in the affected areas have been sensitized and mobilized and are ready to receive the medicine at their nearest health facilities, schools and identified outreach points.
Everyone in the targeted districts is encouraged to participate.

Zimbabwe COVID / Coronavirus Update 16 March 2022: Over 50 Cases Recorded In Schools

Zimbabwe <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/03/23/updated-zororo-makamba-is-no-more-confirmed-2nd-covid-19-case/">first recorded a Coronavirus case</a> in March 2020. Since then, many people have contracted the virus. Many recovered, but some succumbed to the novel virus. • 288 New Cases (All local) and 2 Deaths were reported today. (7-day rolling overage* for new cases raises to 477 from 476 (yesterday). 9 of the new cases reported today are from outbreaks detected from schools in Man (7), Mash Cent (1) and Bulawayo (1). 
• Vaccination Update: 2 256 received the 1st dose today bringing cumulative for 1st dose to 4 392 819, 1 897 received their 2nd dose bringing cumulative for 2nd dose to 3 424 699 while 1 628 received their 3rd dose bringing cumulative for 3 rd. dose to 158 072. 
• As of 10 March 2022, @1500hrs there were (79) hospitalised cases: New Admissions (16), Asymptomatic (8), mild to moderate (65), severe (6) and (0) in Intensive Care Units. 
• 3 478 tests done today (Positivity today was 8.3 %).
• 262 new recoveries: National Recovery rate remains at 96% &amp; Active cases go up 5 213.
• As of today, Zimbabwe has recorded 117 7 Cases 231 700 recoveries &amp; 5 414 Deaths.

Zimbabwe Coronavirus / COVID-19 Update: 12 March 2022

The Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC) has urged members of the public to be watchful as fraudsters are making fake adverts claiming they were made by the government department.
A recent FAKE advert called for applications for a nursing intake set for January 2022. Read the FAKE advert:

Nurse Aides already working in the health care delivery system have an added advantage.

<li>Vaccination Update: 6 435 received the 1st dose today bringing cumulative for 1st dose to 3 317 010 while 5 294 received their 2nd dose bringing cumulative for 2nd dose to 2 600 453 as at 1600 hrs. </li>
<li>As of 31 October 2021, 01500hrs there were 44 hospitalised cases: New Admissions 2, Asymptomatic 12, mild to moderate 24, severe 3 and 5 in Intensive Care Units. </li>
<li>2 564 tests done today (Positivity today was 1.2%) </li>
<li>54 new recoveries: National Recovery rate rise to 96% &amp; Active cases down to 574.</li>

Zimbabwe Coronavirus/ COVID-19 Update: 7 October 2021

The Ministry of Health and Child Care on Friday 24 September 2021 reported that 1 281 pupils and 131 teachers had tested positive for Covid-19 since schools opened on 30 August up to 23 September 2021.
It said most of the cases were at boarding schools and were mild and therefore did not require hospitalisation.
While there has been a spike in COVID-19 cases in schools since reopening, there have been no deaths so far.
There were 330 new cases on Thursday, 229 of them at schools.
Authorities downplay the surge insisting that schools will not be closed prematurely adding that a raft of measures have been adopted to ensure the safety of learners, teachers and all other school staff. Measures being taken include:

<li>Increased COVID-19 testing of all suspected cases on-site.</li>
<li>Isolation and management of all positive cases at the affected schools.</li>
<li>Quarantine of all learners that have been exposed at their schools.</li>
<li>Restriction of movement into and out of the affected learning institutions/ schools until there are no more new cases. This includes the prohibition of visitations by parents.</li>
<li>Enhanced public health and social measures including physical distancing, corhoting, hand washing and sanitization and proper wearing of face mask and exercising good hygienic standards.</li>
<li>Vaccination of eligible population within the schools and the surrounding communities.</li>
<li>Increased awareness on COVID-19 in the schools and surrounding communities.</li>

Zimbabwe has approved the vaccination of teenagers from 14 which would cover most of those in secondary school upwards.
It has purchased enough vaccines to vaccinate over six million people but has <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw">so far administered just over 5.1 million doses</a> with nearly 2.2 million people now fully vaccinated and just over three million having received one dose.

Zimbabwe Coronavirus/ COVID-19 Update: 01 September 2021

The government is reportedly considering scrapping this year’s second term and ordering that when schools open, primary and secondary school pupils will learn continuously until they close in December.
The Sunday News reports that the government has ordered schools to start preparing for the reopening.
A team of senior officials from both the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education and Health and Child Care was last week on the ground to assess the preparedness for school opening. 
Anonymous sources told The Sunday News that the ministry has already agreed that it was impossible to run two more terms this year. Last year, the Government was also forced to cancel term two after a long layoff due to lockdowns.
Meanwhile, the Director of Information and Advocacy in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education Mr Taungana Ndoro said he was not at liberty to speak on the matter. He told The Sunday News:

As a ministry, all I can say is that we are ready for opening and we are just waiting for the President to announce the opening dates. I can’t comment on the issue of second term because it is up to the President but it’s true that from our initial calendar most of the days of second term have been eaten away by the lockdown.
</blockquote>
Mr Ndoro said the reopening of schools will be determined by a number of factors including the COVID-19 trends adding that most schools they visited last week showed that they were ready to start face-to-face lessons. 
This year, schools opened for face-to-face learning on 15 March and closed for holidays on 4 June for the first term.
They were supposed to open for the second term on 28 June and close on 10 September, while the third term was supposed to start on 4 October and end on 17 December.
However, schools have failed to open for the second term due to the rise in Covid-19 cases which prompted the Government to impose a Level Four Lockdown which will be reviewed next after 24 August.
Meanwhile, data from the Ministry of Health and Child Care shows that the Coronavirus curve has been flattening lately.

Zimbabwe Coronavirus/ COVID-19 Update: 12 August 2021

Most private hospitals offering Covid-19 treatment are turning the pandemic into an economic and psychological nightmare for patients, with some of the institutions charging admission fees of up to US$1 000 per night.
This is happening amid reports that most government hospitals are already overwhelmed by Covid-19 patients which means private health institutions are the only available option.
The Sunday Mail recently carried out a survey which revealed that the cost of admission of a Covid-19 patient at private clinics such as West End and Avenues Clinic ranges from US$800 to US$1 000 per day in the intensive care unit (ICU).
Montagu Clinic, which operates under Avenues Clinic in Harare, charges
<ul>
<li> US$3 500 for a general ward, </li>
<li>US$5 100 for its high-dependence unit (HDU), </li>
<li>US$4 000 for a private ward and </li>
<li>US$7 600 for the intensive care unit (ICU).</li>
</ul>
Mater Dei Hospital in Bulawayo demands a deposit of US$5 000 for patients who need ICU hospitalisation.
The Sunday Mail reports that m\Most Covid-19 patients now have bills running into thousands of US dollars, while some patients are losing their lives after opting out of the private hospitals.
Chief co-ordinator of the National Response to the Covid-19 in the Office of the President and Cabinet, Dr Agnes Mahomva, encouraged the citizenry to go to the public health institutions for assistance.
The Medical and Dental Private Practitioners of Zimbabwe Association (MDPPZA), a body of medical practitioners in private practice, said the charges were justified considering the costs and risks associated with COVID-19.
Health expert Dr Kennedy Nyiranda, a private practitioner, said it is wrong for hospitals to ask for a deposit before offering healthcare given that Covid-19 is a global pandemic.
CWGH executive director Mr Itai Rusike called upon the Ministry of Health and Child Care to regulate fees payable to private hospitals for the management and treatment of Covid-19 patients.

Cost Of Admission For COVID-19 Patients At Private Clinics

The Ministry of Health and Child Care has introduced three additional vaccines to the routine Extended Programme of Immunisation (EPI) vaccination schedule for children.
In a statement Secretary for Health and Child Care, Dr Japer Chimedza said three vaccines had been added to ensure an improved health care system. He said:
<blockquote>This communication serves to inform that the Ministry has taken a policy decision to include the following vaccines into the routine EPI vaccination schedule.
Effective 5 June 2021 all children to receive Typhoid Conjugate Vaccine at nine months, effective 1 August 2021 all children to receive Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV) second dose at nine months of age. Effective 1 August 2012 all children (boys and girls) to receive additional Td boosters at five and 10 years of age.</blockquote>
The new Typhoid Conjugate Vaccine (TCV) was introduced through a nationwide catch-up vaccination campaign that integrates vaccines for Polio Prevention (IPV) and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) including Vitamin A supplementation.
TCV is premised on protecting children between nine months and 15 years in line with recommendations from global and local immunisation experts.
This comes as typhoid has been detected in Bulawayo, Harare and Gweru.
