Cuba will donate historic armoured vehicles and a pistol once owned by former Cuban president and revolutionary leader Fidel Castro to the African Liberation Museum currently under construction in Harare.
Simbarashe Mumbengegwi, President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s special envoy, will travel to Havana to receive the donation from Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel.
The items to be donated include armoured vehicles used during the iconic Battle of Cuito Cuanavale (1987-1988), where Cuban forces played a key role in the context of the Angolan Civil War.
A pistol belonging to Fidel Castro, along with other artefacts related to Cuba’s contributions to Africa’s liberation movements, will be part of the donation.
In an interview with <a href="https://translatingcuba.com/cuba-will-donate-historic-armored-vehicles-and-a-pistol-owned-by-fidel-castro-to-zimbabwe/">EFE</a>, Mumbengegwi said Cuba played a vital role in Africa’s liberation and post-colonial development.
He described the donation as a historic milestone in the enduring relationship between Cuba and Africa, and noted Cuba’s continued support to the continent, particularly Zimbabwe, in areas such as health, education, and international diplomacy.
In July 2022, Mnangagwa sent a delegation to Cuba to discuss cooperation on the African Liberation Museum project, which is part of a larger complex known as Liberation City in Harare.
Cuba’s long-standing friendship with Zimbabwe dates back to the 1970s during Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle when ZANU fighters received military training in Cuba.
In the 1980s, Zimbabwean students were sent to Cuba to train as teachers in scientific subjects, and in recent years, Cuban doctors have been deployed to work in Zimbabwe’s hospitals.
The late Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe, who was ousted in a military coup in 2017, had a close relationship with Fidel Castro, sharing a communist ideology.
In 2023, the Zimbabwean government honoured Castro by naming a street in Harare after him.

Zimbabwe has offered Namibia one acre of land in its Pan-African Memorial Park and Museum of African Liberation Project in Liberation City, Harare.
The land is for the construction of an outdoor monument to commemorate Namibia’s emancipation from the South African apartheid government.
This was revealed by ZANU PF secretary for external relations Simbarashe Mumbengegwi, when he delivered a special message from President Emmerson Mnangagwa to Namibia’s president, Hage Geingob at State House in Windhoek on Thursday. He said:

I am pleased to say, Your Excellency, that the government of Zimbabwe is offering 4 400 square metres of space for Namibia to erect a monument commemorating Namibia’s independence from South Africa’s apartheid government. The memorial park will have a number of monuments.
We will have a world-class shopping mall within the complex, 20 hectares of an animal park, 20 hectares of an amusement park, and a heritage village in the memorial park.

On his part, Geingob hailed the project, saying it was good that Africans are telling their own stories. He said:

Sounds good. People want us to forget about our history. They are working hard trying to talk that we are backward, and we are not moving forward.
But let us not be discouraged; let’s go ahead and tell our glorious history.
I welcome it. It is a very good idea – a greeting to my brother – let’s record our history.
That’s what the story is all about. We must be proud to tell our history.
