The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Stadium Inspector Joshua Knipp was in Zimbabwe last week to assess progress made in renovating the National Sports Stadium and Rufaro Stadium in Harare.
In a statement on Monday, the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) said during the inspections, Knipp was accompanied by members of the FIFA-appointed Normalisation Committee. It said:

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Stadium Inspector Joshua Knipp was in the country last week Thursday where he inspected the National Sports Stadium and Rufaro Stadium in Harare.
Knipp who was accompanied by members of the FIFA-appointed Normalisation Committee (NC) Sikhumbuzo Ndebele, Rosemary Mugadza and the FIFA Forward Manager Kudzai Chitima inspected the sporting facilities Thursday and Friday.
A report is expected to be presented to the association in due course.

The two stadiums were banned from hosting international matches after failing to meet CAF requirements.
Previously, CAF said bucket seats made of an unbreakable and non-flammable material should be installed at the National Sports Stadium.
The stadium owners are also required to install a functional Venue Operations Centre (VOC) with a good overview of the stadium equipped with CCTV monitors.
The VOC should have an override capability over the public address system in case of emergency announcements.
CAF said the stadium should be equipped with modern electronic turnstiles and automated systems.

CAF Inspects Rufaro Stadium, National Sports Stadium

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has approached the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) seeking permission to use the National Sports Stadium (NSS).
The PSL intends to stage midweek fixtures but there are concerns that the stadiums currently in use may be over-used.
NSS was closed in June this year due to the deteriorating state of the playing pitch, and water reticulation system challenges.
At the time, a total of eight teams were using the National Sports Stadium for their home matches and the closure of the facility forced the clubs to look for other home venues outside Harare.
PSL chief executive officer Kennedy Ndebele told <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/sport/article/200016284/psl-approaches-src-over-nss">NewsDay</a> that they are seeking permission to use the stadium after it recently hosted a number of national and private events, including two football matches.
NSS hosted the ZDF Cup final match featuring the Zimbabwe Defence Forces Select against Malawi on 15 August, and the Presidential Inauguration Cup on 04 September. Said Ndebele:

We have written to the SRC to check on the availability of the National Sports Stadium given that it has hosted some events in recent times. We are hoping that we will get a positive response.
With the stadia that are available, we have a challenge of having mid-week fixtures because the facilities will be over-used.
If we can get either the National Sports Stadium or Rufaro Stadium or even both, then that will be perfect.
We are happy that we now have an approved facility in Chisumbanje (Green Fuel Arena) but due to its location, it does not alleviate the problem of Barbourfields and Bata stadiums.

Bata Stadium, located in Gweru, Midlands Province, serves as the home venue for Sheasham, CAPS United and Black Rhinos.
Dynamos are now hosting their matches at Barbourfields Stadium, the home of arch-rivals, Highlanders.
Cranborne Bullets and ZPC Kariba use Nyamhunga Stadium in Kariba while Herentals College and FC Platinum are using Mandava Stadium.
Simba Bhora and Ngezi Platinum Stars use Baobab Stadium in Mhondoro while Mutare-based Manica Diamonds and Triangle United use Gibbo Stadium in Triangle.
Hwange use the Colliery Stadium in Hwange, Chicken Inn and Bulawayo Chiefs use Luveve Stadium, while Greenfuel use the Greenfuel Arena which was recently homologated.

PSL Approaches SRC Over National Sports Stadium

The Government has partnered with Sakunda Holdings to upgrade the National Sports Stadium (NSS) so that it meets the required standards to host international matches.
<a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/sakunda-holdings-roped-in-to-speed-up-nss-renovations/">The Herald </a>reported that the two parties are finalising a Memorandum of Understanding which they are expected to sign in the coming few days.
Preliminary feasibility studies for the upgrading of the National Sports Stadium and the adjacent hockey court are underway.
Moreover, a delegation of technocrats from the Government has accompanied Sakunda Holdings staff to Europe for benchmarking.
The delegation comprises two officials from the Ministry of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation, namely Sport and Recreation director Eugenia Chidhakwa and lawyer Evelyn Mutsvangwa as well as three from the Ministry of Local Government – engineers Lovemore Muzhanje, Chenjerai Bwerinofa and Nicholas Mutangu.
The delegation has since toured the Real Betis High-Performance centre and the Olympic Stadium in Sevilla, Spain and they were expected to visit Camp Nou in Barcelona on Thursday.
They are also expected to tour the Bernabeu which is the home of Real Madrid before going to the Allianz Stadium this weekend.
Speaking to The Herald from Spain on Thursday, Chidhakwa said:

The main reason for this tour is for us to learn from the best on how we will be able to renovate various stadiums in Zimbabwe and also how we can take the sport into a viable business entity.
For the first three days that we have been in Seville, we visited the Real Betis stadium and we have also toured their high-performance centre.
They are also in the process of refurbishing their standards to expand their Stadium and we have realised that the way they erected their bucket seats is also the same way we are planning to get ours done at the National Sports Stadium.

Sakunda Holdings project manager and coordinator Nqobile Magwizi said his company committed to upgrading NSS to ensure that it meets the FIFA requirements.

Govt Partners With Sakunda To Upgrade National Sports Stadium

Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation Minister Kirsty Coventry has said authorities are working to ensure that the Warriors will play their matches in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers at home.
This comes after FIFA lifted its suspension of the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA), a development that allows Zimbabwe’s national football teams to compete in international tournaments.
Responding to questions during a Press conference where FIFA confirmed the lifting of the ZIFA suspension and unveiled the normalisation committee, Coventry said:
<blockquote>
We have had good open conversations with FIFA. We will continue having conversations (about the National Sports Stadium).
The guarantees of what has been happening which has not been made public will go to FIFA through the SRC [Sports and Recreation Commission] and we remain fully committed to doing that seeing and ensuring that we are playing our games at home.
There has been ongoing work. The electronic ticketing system is now in the country waiting to be installed.
Water reticulation is in process and the feasibility study for the entire area, not just the NSS, but the grounds around it are being undertaken at the moment. It should be wrapped up in the next two to three weeks.
This has also been explained to FIFA when they visited and they also went and visited the National Sports Stadium of which they were under the impression that is crumbling to the ground, but they that it was not the case.
The feasibility study is being undertaken by a South African legitimate company that built and renovated soccer stadiums for the 2010 World Cup.
And in the next three weeks, we will have more of an update on for you on where that feasibility study will see us.

All of Zimbabwe’s stadiums were banned from hosting international matches three years ago after they failed to meet the minimum standards required by CAF and FIFA.
The Warriors enter the FIFA World Cup 2026 African Qualifiers draw, which will be conducted on Thursday evening in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
Zimbabwe are in Pot 4 of the 54-team draw along with Mozambique, Gambia, Sierra Leone, Togo, Tanzania, Central African Republic, Malawi and Libya.
There are six pots for the draw.

Authorities Working To Ensure Warriors Play At Home - Minister Coventry

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has suspended all matches for three weeks with immediate effect.
In a statement released on Wednesday, 07 June, PSL communications and media liaison officer Kudzai Bare said league action will resume on 01 July 2023.
She said the suspension of topflight matches has been necessitated by the maintenance work on water reticulation being carried out at the National Sports Stadium. Said Bare:

This serves to advise that the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League is taking a break with immediate effect and will resume on the 1st of July 2023.
This has been necessitated by the maintenance work on water reticulation being carried out at the National Sports Stadium and to allow the playing field to regenerate.
We also expect refurbishment works at Rufaro, Nyamhunga and Sakubva stadia to be completed before we resume Castle Lager PSL matches.

The National Sports Stadium, which is managed by the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC), currently provides home ground for eight teams, almost half the number of teams in the 18-team league.
The stadium is home to CAPS United, Dynamos, Yadah, Herentals, ZPC Kariba, Simba Bhora, Black Rhinos and Cranborne Bullets.
The owners of Rufaro Stadium, the Harare City Council, are currently renovating the facility which when completed, will ease pressure on the National Sports Stadium.

Premier Soccer League Takes Three-week Break

The ZIFA leadership, which is not recognised by FIFA, has commended the government for availing over ZWL$1 billion for the renovation of sporting facilities including the National Sports Stadium (NSS).
The Government has set aside ZWL$1.2 billion in the 2023 National Budget for upgrading sporting facilities across the country.
The National Sports Stadium is the main venue for hosting international matches but was banned by CAF as it does not meet the required standards.
Acting ZIFA president Gift Banda said the renovation of NSS should be expedited so that it meets international standards when ZIFA’s suspension by FIFA is lifted. Banda said:

The emphasis on Zimbabwe’s return to international football has been that when we do so we go back having sorted our issues, having structures and infrastructure in place.
We’ve also been working on mending relations with key stakeholders and Government is one such key stakeholder.
It is good to note that the Government is serious about getting the National Sports Stadium to the required standards.
This means when our suspension is lifted we’ll defend our pride right within our borders.
Hopefully when we return to international football the National Sports Stadium will be ready for us to play international football competitively.

ZIFA Wants National Sports Stadium Rehabilitation Expedited

The government has pledged to provide ZWL$1.2 billion for the renovation of sporting and recreational facilities in the country, including the National Sports Stadium.
The National Sports Stadium is the main venue for hosting international matches but was banned by CAF as it does not meet the required standards.
In his 2023 national budget presentation, Minister of Finance Mthuli Ncube allocated ZWL$1.2 billion to sport and recreation. He said:

With regards to sport and recreation, ZWL$1.2 billion has been set aside for the rehabilitation and upgrading of sports facilities and recreational centres, with the aim of modernisation to conform to international standards.
Some of the priorities include the National Sports Stadium, Khumalo and Magamba Hockey Stadiums and refurbishment of Chitungwiza Aquatic Complex swimming pools and general purpose halls.

The Warriors are currently banned from international football but even if the suspension is lifted, the country has no proper venue to host international matches.

Govt Sets Aside ZWL$1.2 Billion For The Renovation Of Stadiums

The Confederation of African Football (Caf) has cleared the National Sports Stadium to host the FIFA 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
The development means Zimbabwe will host South Africa at the National Sports Stadium. Meanwhile, areas in need of upgrade include:

Zifa had earlier on warned that the Warriors faced a real possibility of losing their sovereignty by playing their home World Cup qualifiers on foreign soil if no improvements were urgently done at the National Sports Stadium.
Last month, Caf slapped Zifa with a US$2 000 fine for the lack of bucket seats at the National Sports Stadium.
Twenty countries, including highly ranked Senegal and Mali, had their facilities condemned and omitted from the list of stadia that meet Caf requirements.
The National Sports Stadium was, however, in the Caf’s circular that listed continental facilities cleared for the qualifiers’ Match Day 1 and 2.
The Warriors are in Group G alongside neighbours South Africa, whom they face in the opening match between June 5-8, former continental champions Ghana and Ethiopia.
Zimbabwe’s Match Day 2 is in Ethiopia on June 11 at Bahir Dar International Stadium in Bahir Dar.
Ghana, who open their group match with a home assignment against Ethiopia, had Accra Sports Stadium and Cape Coast Sports Stadium cleared by Caf.
South Africa have 13 facilities dotted across the country that are suitable for international assignments, according to the Caf list.

National Sports Stadium Cleared For World Cup Qualifiers

The President’s Independence Cup match between Highlanders and Dynamos will be played at the National Sports Stadium on 18 April, a government official has confirmed.
Ministry of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation spokesperson, Ranson Madzamba, announced the development on Wednesday. He said:
<blockquote>Contrary to reports circulating, in some sections of the media, the Ministry of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation would like to confirm that the President’s Uhuru Independence Trophy (match) between Highlanders and Dynamos will be held at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday 18 April 2021.</blockquote>
The match, which will mark the return of local football in the country in over a year, will be played under strict COVID-19 protocols.
DeMbare and Bosso have 16 Independence Cup gold medals, between them, having lifted the prestigious trophy eight times each.
The Glamour Boys were the first club to win the Independence Cup, in 1982, when they beat Rio Tinto.

National Sports Stadium To Host Independence Cup Match

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has informed the Premier Soccer League that none of the stadiums in Harare has been approved for use for the 2020 season.
Barbourfields, Luveve, Gibbo, Vengere, Baobab and Mandava are the six that have been approved while Rufaro and the National Sports Stadium (NSS) can still be re-inspected.
Below is the letter that was written by ZIFA to PSL Chief Executive Officer Kenny Ndebele:
The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Football_Association_(ZIFA)" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Zimbabwe Football Association</a> hereby informs your esteemed office that the following stadiums have been provisionally homologated by the First Instance Body for the 2020 season:

<li>Barbourfields Stadium</li>
<li>Luveve Stadium</li>
<li>Mandava Stadium</li>

For re-inspection of other stadiums the procedure is as follows:

<li>Recommendations from the FIB stadium report should be adhered to.</li>
<li>Pictures and progress report should be sent first.</li>
<li>FIB will assess whether to send an inspection team or not.</li>

ZIFA Yet To Approve NSS, Rufaro Stadium To Host 2020 PSL Matches

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has revealed areas which Zimbabwe needs to work on for local stadiums to meet CAF minimum requirements. Below are some of the areas which need improvement.
<blockquote>1. Pitch condition must be improved and the surface must be green and marked clearly in white. 
2. In-field goalposts must be easily removable and spare goalposts must be available for quick installation. 
3. The two covered benches should be at pitch level. 
4. For evening matches, the floodlights LUX capacity must be according to the Caf CL match requirements. A minimum 1 200 Lux should be provided all over the pitch, covering uniformly every area of the playing field. 
5. A uniform signage system around the stadium to facilitate entry or exit of people. It also wants clear adequate signposts to guide spectators to their sectors. 
6. Entry gates, exit gates and doors must be operational and similarly clearly indicated by signs which are universally understood. 
7. Installation of stadium specific sign-age from media entrance to all the various facilities for the media. 
8. Installation of sign-age around the medical facility and throughout the stadium to notify supporters. 
9. Barbourfields Stadium, to add “five individual seated toilets” in the dressing rooms, a massage table in each dressing room, a tactical board (white board/flip chart with pens) as well as good ventilation or air-conditioning. 
10. A doping room which must be near the teams’ dressing rooms and must be “inaccessible to any person that is not involved with the doping control process”. It must be equipped with a television set, a refrigerator equipped with non-alcoholic drinks, sealed mineral water bottles, waste-paper bin for bottles, a ventilator and sufficient seating for at least eight people. 
The toilet area must be immediately next to the doping control room with direct private access 
11. Numbered bucket seats fixed to the floor at Barbourfields as well as a safety certificate from the concerned authorities in which they will set the permitted capacity for the stadium together with detailed terms and conditions that the stadium management must comply with in order to operate the stadium at its permitted capacity.</blockquote>

CAF Stadium Requirements As Zimbabwe Stadiums Are Condemned

Thousands of Zimbabweans stayed away from the late former President Robert Mugabe’s State Funeral at the National Sports Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
While large crowds were observed during the arrival of Mugabe’s body from Singapore at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport and along the city of Harare’s thoroughfare, Julius Nyerere Way, as well as at Rufaro Stadium on Thursday and Friday, approximately over 50 per cent of the seats were empty at the National Sports Stadium.
Speaking from the stadium, British Broadcaster Sky News’s Africa correspondent Jonathan Sparks said:
<blockquote>The atmosphere has picked up a little bit… [but] vast swathes of [the stadium] remain empty, something of an embarrassment for the government of Emmerson Mnangagwa.</blockquote>
Several heads of State and Government addressed the sparse crowd with the major highlight being South African President Cyril Ramaphosa being heckled for the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

Govt Reveals Sitting Arrangements At Mugabe Funeral Service At National Sports Stadium

The woman who died during a stampede at the Warriors match on Sunday has been identified as 38-year-old Edina Nyamadzawo from Msasa Park, Harare.
Nyamadzawo is set to be buried today. ZIFA president Felton Kamambo and PSL chairman Farai Jere are scheduled to travel to Domboshawa today for Nyamadzawo’s burial. The two visited Nyamadzawo’s home yesterday to pay their respects and see where they could help. Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson, Paul Nyathi, told The Herald that the other two injured fans were discharged from the hospital.

Woman Who Died During Stampede At Zim Vs Congo Match Identified

The Zimbabwe Football Association has confirmed the death of a female fan in a stampede outside of the National Stadium in Harare ahead of Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Congo.
A local publication has identified the deceased middle-aged woman as Mai Tadiwa who was killed outside an entry gate as impatient fans pushed to enter the stadium amid poor crowd control for what was a vital match for the home side.

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has sent condolences to the family of a soccer fan who was killed during a stampede at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
A middle-aged woman died in a stampede at the entrance into the stadium when people clamoured to get inside before the match started.
The ZIFA statement issued through social media reads:
<blockquote>Our heartfelt condolences go to the family and friends of a Warriors supporter who passed on after being trampled on at the Warriors match yesterday.
May her soul rest in eternal peace.
We wish those who have injured a speedy recovery.
We shall continue to work towards making our admission processes at entry points more swift so that recurrence of such unfortunate events can be avoided.</blockquote>
The unfortunate incident overshadowed the Warriors’ 2-0 win over Congo Brazzaville.
The win ensures that the Warriors sealed qualification for AFCON 2019, top of their group.

Zifa Consoles Family Of Warriors Fan Who Died In Stampede At NSS

A middle-aged woman died at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday where she had gone to watch a match between The Warriors and Congo.
According to a <a href="https://iharare.com/woman-dies-during-stampede/">report,</a> the woman, killed in the stampede is one Mai Tadiwa, a Mutare based Caps United fan and Zimbabwe National Team supporter. Watch video below:

Soccer24 reports that the Warriors failed to hold their training session on Thursday afternoon after they were locked out at the National Sports Stadium.
The incident happened following an impasse between the Ministry of Local Government and the Zimbabwe Football Association over ticket tallying. The ministry wants access to the online ticketing system so that they will be in a position to ascertain their share.
Warriors manager Wellington Mpandare expressed sadness at the development. Said Mpandare:
<blockquote>Yes, we were locked out of the stadium because of some standoff between Zifa and the department of public works in the Ministry of Local Government.
It’s really a sad episode because we have lost a day of training. It’s like we are now home away from home yet in Congo we had four days at the match venue.</blockquote>
The national team held their previous sessions at Harare International School and were hoping to have a feel of the stadium turf today.
They are set to use the venue on Sunday for their decisive 2019 Afcon qualifier against Congo Brazzaville.

Govt Locks Warriors Out Of National Sports Stadium

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has claimed that the November military intervention by the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, which ultimately resulted in the fall of former president Robert Mugabe and his own ascendancy succeeded because it was led by God. Addressing thousands of congregants from the Bishop Nehemiah Mutendi-led Zion Christian Church (ZCC) at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday, Mnangagwa said:
<blockquote>I was at the African Union summit attended by African Heads of State. The chairman of the AU applauded Zimbabwe, they applauded you, the armed forces and all the citizens of Zimbabwe; that you managed to have a transition peacefully.
This shows that this was not led by any person made of flesh. It [peaceful transition] succeeded because it was led by God.
So, today, I assure you that I and those making my leadership, we will continue to remember that you said we should lead you and we will remain your servants, ruling according to your wishes, not ours.</blockquote>
However, former cabinet ministers and G40 Faction members Jonathan Moyo and Patrick Zhuwao have used social media to dispute the claims that the military intervention was bloodless. Moyo, in particular, <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2018/01/18/moyo-says-cio-officer-killed-military-intervention-disputes-bloodless/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">has argued that a number of people were killed and has said that former Central Intelligence Officer Peter Munetsi was one of the victims.</a>

The Military Intervention Succeeded Because It Was Led By God Says Mnangagwa

Speaking during the live DVD recording of Hymn Night 3 at Word of Life Church auditorium in Bulawayo, Zimpraise leader and founder Joseph Madziyire said that they are planning to fill the National Sports Stadium as part of their 10 year celebrations.
Said Madziyire:
<blockquote>As part of our 10-year celebrations we shall hold a concert at the National Sports Stadium. I’m confident that we’re going to fill the stadium come September 9.</blockquote>
