<p>Econet announced the launch of its 5G network in Zimbabwe in February 2022. The company rolled out 5G with the help of Ericsson. Econet is the only mobile operator in Zimbabwe currently that has 5G. </p>
<p>In general, 5G offers internet speeds that are up to 10 times that of 4G. </p>
<p>With the release of more and more 5G capable phones globally, Zimbabweans may not be clear if these phones are relevant in Zimbabwe.</p>

<p>According to the telecoms industry regulator, POTRAZ,  Econet has a total of 22 5G base stations currently (<a href="https://www.techzim.co.zw/2023/04/potraz-q4-2022-report-out-internet-penetration-now-65-3-theres-more/">based on December 2022 data</a>).  In March this year, Econet promised to deploy more 5G sites around the country but did not commit to any numbers.</p>
<h2>Does it make sense to buy a 5G phone in Zimbabwe?</h2>
<p>As you can see above, the total number of 5G base stations in the whole country is just 22. This is a very small number, especially considering that 5G has a limited range compared to 4G and 3G. </p>
<p>To put it into perspective, Econet has over 900 4G base stations in Zimbabwe. Based on these numbers, in a practical sense, we can’t really say there is 5G in Zimbabwe.</p>
<p>In the rare case that you live or work in one of the 22 locations listed above that have 5G, it will be worth it for you, yes. Otherwise, there’s no point.</p>
<h2>Does NetOne have 5G?</h2>
<p>As of the writing of this article, NetOne does not have any commercial 5G sites in Zimbabwe.</p>
<p>What about Telecel? We cannot even talk of 5G when it comes to Telecel. The company is struggling to deploy a 4G network, with only 17 of them so far according to the industry regulators report.</p>
<h2>Which phones available in Zimbabwe have 5G?</h2>
<p>This is a hard question to answer because most of the phones in Zimbabwe do not come into the country through the manufacturer’s official channels. </p>
<p>People buy mobile phones that were made for other markets like US, UK, South Africa, and Australia (basically where Zimbabweans in the diaspora are found). They also buy phones meant for Asia that are imported via market the Dubai gray market channels. </p>
<p>This means that 5G phones available in these countries can also generally be available on the local market. But again, there’s no point in buying a 5G mobile phone right now. At least it being 5G must not be the reason for buying it.</p>

5G Network Coverage In Zimbabwe - Where Can You Find It? Should You Buy a 5G Phone?

<p>Police have arrested four suspects for fraud and cybercrime after they allegedly stole NetOne airtime worth more than ZWL$560 million from the telecoms company.</p>
<p>National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said police detectives worked with the NetOne Loss Control and Fraud Management Unit to nab the suspects. Said Asst Comm Nyathi:</p>

<p>The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of Primrose Maireti (32), James Mwanza (35), Kumbulani Nyapfumbi (30) and Simbarashe Mandimutsira (27) for allegedly stealing pin-less credit airtime from NetOne Cellular (Private) Limited and then sell it at a higher discount than the company to dealers.</p>
<p>Police detectives teamed up with NetOne Loss Control and Fraud Management Unit to track the suspects leading to the arrest of James Mwanza.</p>
<p>Checks made confirmed that James Mwanza received ZWL50 000 000.00 worth of pin-less airtime from the deal. He implicated Primrose Maireti and others.</p>
<p>The Zimbabwe Republic Police has established that a total of ZWL565 999 964.00 worth of airtime was stolen from 3rd December 2022 to 19th January 2023. NetOne employees were sharing the loot with the airtime dealers.</p>
<p>Police has since recovered a Honda Fit motor vehicle registration number AFW 6813 from Kumbulani Nyapfumbi, which was bought through the loot.</p>
<p>Investigations have also revealed that he bought a residential stand for USD11 000.00 and another Honda Fit vehicle chassis number GE6-1744428 for USD3 971.00. The vehicle is on its way from Japan.</p>
<p>The Zimbabwe Republic Police will ensure that company employees and their accomplices face the full wrath of the law for fraudulent activities.</p>

Fraudsters Steal $565 Million Worth Of NetOne Airtime

<p><span>Two Harare men were on Wednesday sentenced to 10 years in jail for stealing Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) copper cables.</span></p>
<p><span>They were part of a four-member gang which included a 16-year-old, The Standard reported.</span></p>
<p><span>There was a separation of trial after Richard Dzinzi and Reward Sibanda pleaded guilty to the charge leading to their conviction and sentence. Reads the state outline:</span></p>

<p><span><em>The following accused persons were arrested for possession of 25 cut pieces of 3 core armoured cable in Westgate area; Sibanda (53) of 93 Engineering Highfields, Richard Dzinzi (35) of Turnleaf Farm Westgate, Amos Dzinzi (16) of Turnleaf Farm and Tafadzwa Phiri (27) of 497 Nehanda Ext RRB 5409688 Marlborough.</em></span></p>

<p><span>Phiri and Amos Dzinzi pleaded not guilty and were remanded in custody until Tuesday for routine remand. </span></p>
<p><span>The accused persons had no legal representation.</span></p>
<p><span>In October last year, the government gazetted the <strong><a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/zimbabwe-independent-complaints-commission-act-copper-control-amendment-act-gazetted/">Zimbabwe Independent Complaints Commission Act and the Copper Control Amendment Act [<em>Chapter 10:34</em>] (No. 5 of 2022)</a></strong>, which introduced <em>new, more severe penalties.</em></span></p>
<p><span>Organisations such as ZESA, TelOne, Econet, Telecel, NetOne, and the National Railways of Zimbabwe tell tales of loss of business due to the effects of copper cable theft that has been spreading uncontrolled.</span></p>
<p><span>Households too are affected as they are left to spend days without power and are sometimes asked to pull resources together for the purchase of copper cables.</span></p>
<p><span>It is suspected most of the stolen cables are being smuggled to South Africa and they are then shipped further to countries that use the metal in the construction and manufacturing industries.</span></p>

Copper Cable Thieves Sentenced To 10 Years In Jail

<p><span>The government has announced plans for a complete dissolution of all <strong><a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/ZESA">ZESA Holdings</a></strong> subsidiary boards saying the move is one of the priorities under the state enterprises and parastatals reform agenda. In his 2023 Budget presentation last week, Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube said:</span></p>

<p><span><em>State Enterprise and Parastatals reforms have been guided by the SEPs Short to Medium Term Reform Framework (SEPs-SMTRF), the National Development Strategy (NDS) 1 and Vision 2030. Drawing lessons from the successes and challenges faced in implementing the SEPs-SMTRF since 2018, it is envisaged that the SEPs reform priorities for 2023 will be guided by the following:</em></span></p>
<p><span><em>(a) Completion of the following on-going SEPs reforms:</em></span>

<p><span><em>(b) Transform the Traffic Safety Council into a Traffic Safety Agency, with appropriate legal standing to effectively enforce road safety systems in the country.</em></span></p>
<p><span><em>(c) Undertake a holistic evaluation of public entities reforms through strategic portfolio reviews and comprehensive diagnostic analysis by sector. This will inform the best reform options for each entity on a case-by-case basis.</em></span></p>
<p><span><em>In this regard, line Ministries would be required to play a central role to ensure that all public entities under their purview are included in the reviewed Framework.</em></span></p>
<p><span><em>(d) A number of SOEs have been transformed and now operate viably, for example, Air Zimbabwe.</em></span></p>
<p><span><em>Government has over the years created investment vehicles and partnered private sector players through joint ventures, to invest in various.</em></span></p>

Govt Announces Plans For Complete Dissolution Of All ZESA Subsidiary Boards

<p>A Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA) tollgate cashier was arrested on allegations of defrauding NetOne of ZWL$16 million.</p>
<p>Tongai Clive Shonhiwa (34) recently appeared before Harare magistrate Dennis Mangosi, who granted him $50 000 bail and remanded the matter to 12 December.</p>
<p>The complainant in the case is NetOne Cellular (Pvt) Ltd, represented by its fraud manager Munyaradzi Hove.</p>
<p>Allegations are that from July 2022 to date, ZINARA received point-of-sale machines from various banks with NetOne post-paid data lines for use at tollgates across the country.</p>
<p>On dates unknown to the prosecution, but during the same period, Shonhiwa allegedly removed several post-paid NetOne data sim cards from point-of-sale machines under his charge and gained access to NetOne data recharge platforms.</p>
<p>The accused would then sell the post-paid data lines to unsuspecting clients claiming that the lines had several benefits and packages including unlimited data recharge and talk time.</p>
<p>It is alleged that during the same period, the accused sold two data lines to Courage Nemaisa for US$500.</p>
<p>Nemaisa allegedly then gave one of the paid lines to Talent Taunezvi and the two used these lines to transfer data bundles to several clients at a fee.</p>

NetOne Loses $16 Million To ZINARA Cashier

<p><span><strong><a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Reward_Kangai">Reward Kangai</a></strong>, a former chief executive officer of <strong><a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/NetOne_Zimbabwe">NetOne</a></strong>, a government-owned telecommunications company, says it is public knowledge that bigwigs are involved in most of the corruption cases that have affected Zimbabwe’s economy.</span></p>
<p><span>He made the remarks in response to a Pindula News article in which the chairperson of the Zimbabwe Anti-corruption Commission, Justice <strong><a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Loice_Matanda-Moyo">Loice Matanda-Moyo</a></strong> bemoaned the <strong><a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/zacc-losing-highly-skilled-workers-justice-matanda-moyo/">departure of skilled personnel from the commission. </a></strong></span></p>
<p><span>Kangai said those leaving the anti-graft organisation are afraid of being victimised for targeting political elites. Said Kangai:</span></p>

<div><span>The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Anti-Corruption_Commission" title="Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission">Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission</a> commissioner <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Goodson_Nguni" title="Goodson Nguni">Goodson Nguni</a> announced in January 2018 that Mandiwanzira had been cleared by the ZACC investigations and that instead, they wanted to arrest Kangai himself. </span></div>
<div><span>Kangai was subsequently arrested on 10 January 2018 but was released on bail the same month.</span>
<p><span>In 2019, ZACC investigated him for possible abuse of office, allegations which stemmed from a forensic audit conducted in 2016 by the Auditor General.</span></p></div>

Ex-NetOne CEO Kangai Says "It’s An Open Secret Bigwigs Are Involved In Most Corruption Cases"

<p><span>The ruling ZANU PF party has reportedly appealed to State-owned parastatals to exhibit at its Congress slated for this week for a cost between US$3 000 and US$6 000.</span></p>
<p><span>Considering that Zimbabwe has 107 such enterprises, the party could potentially raise between US$321 000 and US$642 000 from parastatals alone. </span></p>
<p><span>ZANU PF is holding its 7th National People’s Congress from 26 to 29 October, the first since the ouster of the late former leader and President Robert Mugabe who was deposed in November 2017.</span></p>
<p><span>ZANU PF secretary for finance Patrick Chinamasa asked the parastatals to exhibit at the congress, according to letters seen by <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200002488/zanu-pf-leans-on-parastatals-to-fund-congress">NewsDay</a>. </span></p>
<p><span>The letters were copied to Zanu PF secretary for administration Obert Mpofu and deputy secretary for finance Tshinga Dube. Read the letters:</span></p>

<p><span><em>The Zanu PF party is appealing for your co-operation to utilise space allocated to advertise your products and services during the Zanu PF 7th National People’s Congress scheduled for between October 26 and 29, 2022.</em></span></p>

<p><span>However, a top official from a parastatal under the ICT ministry told NewsDay that most parastatals had no financial capacity to fund the exhibitions. Said the source:</span></p>

<p><span><em>We are broke and we do not get government support but we are being forced to pay these large amounts to sponsor this event which is not fair on our part. Where do we find such amount of money when there is not enough already to fund our retooling efforts?</em></span></p>

ZANU PF Appeals To Parastatals To Exhibit At Its Congress

<p><span>Police in Kwekwe have arrested Romeo Rodgers Shava, who is alleged to be behind a series of copper cable theft cases in the town, following an ambush on one of his runners in Newton.</span></p>
<p><span>ZBC News reports that preliminary investigations reveal that an ambush laid by TelOne in the Newton area led to the arrest of 22-year-old Robert Mtetwa, who implicated Shava as his recruiter.</span></p>
<p><span>Mtetwa, who was apprehended while in the company of six others, five of whom are on the run, was handed over to Kwekwe CID for investigations.</span></p>
<p><span>He confessed to stealing TelOne copper cables along Burma Road in Kwekwe, two days before his arrest. He also showed detectives a place where they burnt the stolen cables.</span></p>
<p><span>Mtetwa also indicated that Shava would drop them at designated places to steal TelOne copper cables and they would call him to pick them up after cutting and pulling out the cables.</span></p>
<p><span>He pleaded guilty to two counts of stealing TelOne copper cables and was remanded in custody for sentencing.</span></p>
<p><span>Meanwhile, Shava was dragged to Gokwe regional magistrate court facing two counts of stealing TelOne copper cables, but he denied the charges.</span></p>
<p><span>The magistrate remanded him in custody until the 29th of September. If found guilty of theft of TelOne cables or vandalism of TelOne infrastructure, he will be sentenced to a minimum jail term of 10 years.</span></p>

Police Bust A Syndicate Targeting Copper Cables

<p><span>A 31- year-old man has been slapped with a 10-year-jail term by a Harare court after being convicted of stealing ZESA copper cables.</span></p>
<p><span>Pikitai Makucha who was found in possession of ZESA cables was handed the minimum mandatory sentence for contravening the Electricity Act.</span></p>
<p><span>In passing the sentence, the magistrate noted that cases of vandalism of power infrastructure are on the increase, hence the need to send the right message to would-be offenders.</span></p>
<p><span>Makucha was convicted after a full trial, <a href="https://www.zbcnews.co.zw/man-jailed-10-years-for-zesa-cables-theft/">ZBC News</a> reports.</span></p>

Man Jailed For 10 Years For Stealing ZESA Copper Cables

<p>State-owned mobile network operator, NetOne, has made senior appointments with four executives joining the company.</p>
<p>NetOne appointed Stanley Muchemwa as chief information officer, Isaiah Nyangari, chief commercial officer, Learnmore Masunda, general manager (microfinance services) and Roselyn Chisveto, head of marketing and public relations.</p>
<p>The four appointments are with effect from September 1, 2021.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, the positions of chief operating officer and chief technical officer remain vacant and are expected to be filled with effect from October 1, 2021. <em>The Herald</em> reported sources as saying:</p>

NetOne Makes Four Senior Appointments

<p>The government of Zimbabwe has approved the schools’ e-learning strategy that is aimed at quickening the adoption of information communication technologies (ICTs).</p>
<p>It is projected that through the National e-Learning Strategy for Schools in Zimbabwe that is scheduled to run from this year until 2025, about 3 000 teachers will receive training on ICTs by June this year.</p>
<p>The strategy is also premised on <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2018/11/22/mnangagwa-launches-smart-e-learning-kits-and-textbooks/">connecting 1 500 learning institutions to the internet</a> before year-end.</p>
<p>The overall objective of the e-learning strategy is to industrialise the country through the use of information communication technologies.</p>
<p>Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa told a post Cabinet media briefing on Tuesday night that the strategy also seeks to ensure that schools in remote areas of the country get access to online learning equipment. She said:</p>
<blockquote><p>The 2021 National e-Learning Programme has the following targets: connection of 1 500 schools to the broadband; electrification of 434 schools; manufacture of up to 150 000 devices as per order by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education; development of mobile applications for use on the existing e-Learning management system within 45 days; e-Learning content development by instructional designers which should be in place by June 2021; capacitation of 3 000 teachers with basic digital skills by December 2021; and delivery of e-Learning through audios, videos and text (multimedia) interactive materials.</p>
<p>The success of the online learning initiative for rural communities will be premised on the expansion and upgrading of the broadband infrastructure; the acquisition of standardised gadgets for schools; the development and delivery of content, a federated content hosting approach to optimize and cut down on the cost of access; the importing of basic digital skills to educators (capacity building) and the availability of resources for the roll-out of the programme.</p></blockquote>
<p>Minister Mutsvangwa said parastatals such as the Potraz, TelOne, NetOne and the ZARNET are key in the implementation of the national e-learning strategy.</p>
<p>She said POTRAZ will continue providing e-learning gadgets to schools, particularly in rural areas, under the Connect a School-Connect a Community Programme formulated by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).</p>
<p>The government will also establish dedicated radio and television channels for e-learning purposes.</p>
<p>Some observers believe the strategy would have worked well if the rural electrification programme which is underway was complete since gadgets such as computers are dependent upon the availability of power.</p>
<p>The strategy is likely to bring smiles to rural dwellers who have for long argued that the digital divide between rural and urban schools was a significant attribute of poor records in most of the rural schools.</p>

<p>In a development that will see NetOne subscribers paying $6.33 per minute to call other NetOne subscribers, NetOne announced that it will review its call charges effective tomorrow. NetOne also said a Netone subscriber calling other networks will pay 6.11 per minute.</p>

NetOne Hikes Bundle Tariffs By Over 100%

<p>The Ministry of Finance and Economic Development has claimed that the privatisation of teecoms parastatals is being delayed by the absence of advisory fees.</p>
<p>Zimbabwe was scheduled to sell majority shares in state-owned telecoms assets but absence of about US$5 million to pay Price Waterhouse Coopers (PwC), an advisor on privatisation is reportedly stalling the process. The treasury said:</p>
<blockquote><p>NetOne and TelOne have indicated that they cannot afford the over US$5m transactional fees for the consultancy services for the transaction. Following the unsustainable fees for the transaction, Government has cancelled the transactional contract with PwC Transactional Advisors and is looking at retendering or sourcing for the services of other bi-lateral or multilateral partners,” Treasury says in an update on the privatisation plan.</p>
<p>In this regard, a formal request has been made by the Secretary of SEPs Reforms, Corporate Governance and Procurement to the World Ban local office to ask IFC to as Transactional Advisors since these do not need upfront payment of fixed fees as their fees are success fee based.</p></blockquote>
<p>This comes amid reports that most of the country’s parastatals are being poorly managed resulting in unnecessary loss.</p>

Privatisation Of Parastatals Stalled By Absence Of Consultation Fees - Treasury

<p>ZACC is reportedly probing NetOne Non-Executive Director Rangarirai Mathias Mavhunga for not revealing his personal interest in a transaction involving FMC Holdings Limited and NetOne, Business times reports.</p>
<p>According to the publication NetOne entered into an agreement with FMC Holdings which would see NetOne facilities its customers acquire microfinance loans from FMC.</p>
<p>According to an affidavit filed by the investigating detective Collius Mushambi:</p>
<blockquote><p>When the agreement was entered between the two parties, the accused did not disclose to NetOne Cellular board his involvement in FMC which might have favoured FMC to obtain the facility in contravention of Section 173 (1) (a) (ii) of the Criminal Law and Codification and Reform Act</p></blockquote>
<p>A warrant of search and seizure signed by Magistrate Tendai Muchini reads in part;</p>
<blockquote><p>To the peace officers and other officers of the law, proper to the execution of criminal law warrants, whereas from information taken upon oath before myself, there are reasonable grounds for believing that NetOne Cellular is in possession or control of the following documents and records which are required as exhibits in a criminal docket and that is necessary for the purpose of investigating or detecting a case of corruptly concealing from a principal, a personal interest in a transaction.</p>
<p>These are therefore in the state’s name to command you to proceed to NetOne Cellular and there from immediately obtain and take into custody the mentioned articles and take them to a police station or other place of safety until the matter is finalised or until you further receive orders from the Court</p></blockquote>

NetOne To Review The Price Of Data Tomorrow

<p>One of the remaining four board members at State-owned Mobile Network Operator (MNO) NetOne was awarded a doctorate by an alleged bogus institution.</p>
<p>Dr Ranga Mavhunga was awarded the degree by Commonwealth University, with the institution accused of dishing out overnight doctorates to politicians like confetti.</p>
<p>Eminent Zimbabweans who have disapproved of doctorate offers by the University include Jacob Mutisi an ICT engineer, Nigel Mugami of 263chat and MDC Alliance president Nelson Chamisa.</p>
<p>Chamisa was reportedly asked to pay USD $3500 in exchange for the doctorate from the same institution.</p>
<p>Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) CEO Karikoga Kaseke reported having “earned” his doctorate from the Commonwealth University.</p>
<p>The NetOne director confirmed to Technomag that he indeed is a recipient of the degree, but dismissed speculation that he paid for the doctorate. He is quoted as saying:</p>
<blockquote><p>I’m indeed a bonafide beneficiary. I studied a Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) from the Commonwealth University, this is a qualification I indeed earned.</p></blockquote>
<p>Mavhunga asserted that he studied for his Master’s Degree in South Africa where he achieved an MBA with Natal university in the year 2000.</p>

NetOne Board Member Accused Of Receiving Bogus Doctorate

<p>Telecommunications giants, TelOne and NetOne have jointly donated $10 million towards the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.</p>
<p>The donation was handed to President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Wednesday at the statehouse. The government-owned enterprises said that they are committed to augmenting Government’s efforts towards the mitigation of this global pandemic. The telcos said:</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>We have extended our business collaboration to establish a sustainable response plan which will benefit three public hospitals namely Sally Mugabe (formerly Harare Hospital), Beatrice Infectious Diseases and Mpilo Hospitals.</strong></p></blockquote>
<p>The donation targets:</p>

<li>Infrastructure Development through supporting the refurbishment and adoption of one ward at each of the hospitals.</li>
<li>Medical Equipment including ICU and ward care beds, bedside lockers and other ward furniture as well as suction machines, oxygen tanks, nebulisers and patient monitors.</li>
<li>Water reticulation through drilling and the full installation of 3 boreholes at Sally Mugabe Hospital; 2 boreholes at Mpilo and 1 borehole at Beatrice Infectious Diseases Hospital.</li>
<li>Consumables which include FFP2 masks, N95 masks, dromex goggles, medium-duty aprons, chemical overalls, cotton disposable overalls, glass face screens and an assortment of sanitisers and disinfectants.</li>
</ol>

NetOne And TelOne Jointly Donate $10M Towards COVID-19 Response

<p>State-owned Mobile Network Operator (MNO), <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/NetOne_Zimbabwe" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">NetOne</a> has suspended its Chief Executive Officer Lazarus Muchenje and Chief Finance Officer, <em>TechnoMag</em> reports.</p>
<p>The board instituted 6 separate audits against the company’s executives, with both internal and external audits, being concurrently undertaken, resulting in the resignation of the chairman and three other board members a fortnight ago.</p>
<p>The ministry of ICT Postal and courier services confirmed that the board has suspended the two but did not give reasons for the move.</p>
<p>Muchenje’s recent suspension is not the first time it has happened, as this once happened when <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Supa_Mandiwanzira" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Supa Mandiwanzira</a> was in charge of the ministry.</p>

NetOne Suspends It's CEO & CFO

<p>NetOne’s managing director for the Mobile Financial Services (MFS) unit Nkosinathi Ncube has resigned with immediate effect, Zim Morning Post reports.</p>
<p>Ncube reportedly left the State-owned Mobile Network Operator (MNO) on Tuesday (today).</p>
<p>The publication was told that Ncube handed in his resignation letter this week;</p>
<blockquote><p>Mr Ncube tendered his resignation this week.</p>

NetOne Managing Director (MFS) Resigns

<p>State-owned mobile network operator (MNO) NetOne has announced new charges for its OneFusion bundles effective 25 April 2019.</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>One Fusion Lite</strong> costs $10 and will have: 15 Onnet Minutes, 5 Offnet Minutes, 0 Internationa minutes, 180 Data Bundle (MB). 90 WhatsApp (MB), and 5 SMS.</li>
<li><strong>OneFusion Gold</strong> will cost $20 and will have: 25 Onnet Minutes, 10 Offnet Minutes, 0 International Minutes, 400 Data Bundle (MB), 160 WhatsApp (MB), and 25 SMS.</li>
<li><strong>One Fusion Premium</strong> will cost $50 and will have: 80 Onnet Minutes, 60 Offnet Minutes, 5 International Minutes, 1 000 Data Bundle (MB), 360 WhatsApp (MB), and 30 SMS.</li>

NetOne Announces Revised OneFusion Bundles

<p>State-owned mobile operator (MNO), NetOne has followed Econet Zimbabwe and Telecel Zimbabwe in hiking call tariffs with effect from 1 April 2019.</p>
<p>Local NetOne calls during peak and off-peak hours will now cost $0,2199 for both NetOne to NetOne (On-net) and NetOne to other Networks (Off-net).</p>

NetOne Hikes Tariffs, Calls To Cost $0,2199 Per Minute

<p>Potraz director general Dr Gift Machengete said NetOne was fined last month for misrepresenting subscriber information.</p>
<p>Machengete said this in Kadoma at the weekend while addressing legislators during a workshop aimed at making lawmakers familiarise themselves with Potraz operations. did not, however, disclose how much the fine was but said it shows NetOne is not getting preferential treatment because it was a Government owned entity. Said Machengete:</p>
<blockquote><p>We have not treated NetOne with kid gloves as widely perceived. In fact, only last month (November) we found NetOne guilty of misrepresenting subscriber information and levied a penalty of 5 percent of their gross revenue for August 2018. NetOne together with Econet and Telecel have received similar penalties in the past over quality of service breaches.</p></blockquote>
<p>He also said the directive to have mobile operators share infrastructure was not in any way meant to undermine one of the operators in which it had invested heavily.</p>

NetOne Fined For Misrepresenting Subscriber Information

<p>In a notice, State owned telecommunications company, NetOne, said it has reviewed its OneFusion package and data tariffs effective 1 November.</p>
<p>NetOne said it has extended the validity for the $5 and $10 packages from 21 days to 30 days. The statement reads:</p>
<blockquote><p>We have reviewed our OneFusion and Data bundle tariffs effective 1 November. We have also heeded your call to extend validity from 21 days to 30 days for the $5 and $10 packages as we continue to give you unbeatable value always.</p></blockquote>

NetOne's $5 And $10 OneFusion Bundles Now Valid For 30 days

<p>The Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz) has said that it will order mobile network operators, Econet, NetOne and Telecel to connect the people in Maranda, Mwenezi, who have limited access to communication channels. Potraz said that the telecommunications companies should not focus on the big cities while marginalising the rural communities. Phibeon Chaibva, an official with Potraz told Daily News,</p>

It is the consumers’ right to freely select their service providers, as well as products and services, from a variety of offerings… The mobile phone is the most powerful technology for ending poverty in the world today.</p>

Potraz Says Telecommunications Companies Should Not Focus On Cities Only At The Expense Of Rural Areas

<p>NetOne’s rebranding and aggressive promotion of its mobile money service OneMoney resulted in its subscriber base increasing by a massive 542.9 percent. This was revealed by the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe’s (Potraz) Telecommunications Sector Performance Report For 2017.</p>
<p>In 2016, NetOne company had only 8 234 active subscribers and this number shot up to 52 940 subscribers in 2017. All three mobile money services recorded growth in the number of active mobile money subscriptions with Telecel’s TeleCash increasing by 60.3 percent from 49 549 to 79 429. The country’s biggest mobile money company, Econet’s EcoCash recorded growth of 41 percent from 3,245,405 to 4,574,409.</p>
<p>However, despite the massive growth in users, OneMoney’s active users are a fraction of those of Ecocash. OneMoney has a market share of only 1.7 percent while EcoCash has a market share of 97.2 percent. TeleCash holds the remaining 1.7 percent of the market share.</p>
<p>Recently EcoCash has allowed NetOne and Telecel users to register for EcoCash. This comes a few months after Minister of ICT and Cybersecurity Super Mandiwanzira issued a directive ordering the three mobile money services to become interoperable and allow the seamless transfer of money from one service to another.</p>


NetOne's Mobile Money Subscription Up By 543 Percent, Market Share Now At 1.1 Percent

<p><span>Information Communication Technology and Cyber Security Minister Supa Mandiwanzira, told The Herald Business last week that both Telecel and NetOne will not be merged into one company.</span></p>
<p>Mandiwanzira said this is because Government <span>does not own Telecel 100 percent. </span>Government holds 100 percent shareholding in NetOne and 60 percent in Telecel. The remaining 40 percent in Telecel which was previously held by a consortium of indigenous groups including war veterans and veteran businesspeople including Dr Jane Mutasa and board chairman Dr James Makamba, was recently acquired by a consortium led by top Harare lawyer Gerald Mlotshwa and businessman George Manyere.</p>
<p>Government acquired its 60 percent stake in Telecel that was previously held by VimpelCom of Netherlands, through its information communication technology firm, ZARNet for $40 million. The deal was funded by the National Social Security Authority (NSSA).</p>
